Chapter 269: 269: Trace responsibility back to its source
"Dr. Liu, this is truly serious. The patient has infections to varying degrees in all areas with prosthetic implants. If this leads to a major outbreak, I daren't imagine the consequences."
Liang Xiaolin, who was responsible for relaying messages, came running hastily to Liu Banxia, who was reading a book in the Emergency Department.
"So, she's lucky she knew to come see a doctor today. Otherwise, the price of her beauty would have been her life," Liu Banxia remarked.
"Are you thinking about plastic surgery? It's best to avoid it if you can. Although your figure is a bit slight, it's good enough. Otherwise, it's too dangerous."
He was just saying it casually, but it made Liang Xiaolin furious. What was the implication? That her chest was small and her butt wasn't perky enough? That depends on who she's compared to! She obviously couldn't compare to Qing Kewa, but she could still hold her own against others.
She glanced at Qing Kewa and then threw a few sharp glares at Liu Banxia.
This was only possible because they had become familiar enough to make small jokes with each other. Otherwise, given Liang Xiaolin's imposing demeanor when she first arrived at the Second Hospital, Liu Banxia wouldn't have dared to make such reckless comments even if he had a lot more courage.
Situations like the one this patient experienced today are not uncommon. However, they usually only make the news and become known to the public if the infection is severe or if those affected can't get a satisfactory resolution.
But most of the time? Even when people are scammed, they often don't dare to cause a fuss for fear of losing face. Especially with the current development of the medical aesthetics industry, many people, whether qualified or not, want to try their hand at it to make some quick money.
If you were to check all those small beauty salons offering hyaluronic acid injections, you'd find that if even two out of ten have valid qualifications, that's considered a success.
Even in some large plastic surgery hospitals, many of the procedures they perform are often pushing the boundaries of regulations. Otherwise, why else would they now be focusing on hiring general surgeons from public hospitals? They also know that they need to operate more legitimately now.
People's awareness of their rights has significantly increased; it's not like before when you could just fool them and get away with it.
"President Liu, I heard you plan to work with the community to promote medical knowledge?" Wang Chao came over and asked.
"Oh? Got some ideas? You could consider taking charge of this," Liu Banxia responded.
"Seriously though, I am quite interested. I'd also consider it my contribution to our Emergency Department," Wang Chao said.
"Yes, I'm serious. Your family has connections in official circles, so handling the liaison work should be no problem for you," Liu Banxia commented.
"Also, think about printing the promotional materials. Our print run won't be very large, so see if you can find some connections to get us a cheaper rate."
"And we'll also need to notify the city management and get things registered, right? Otherwise, they probably won't let us set up a tent by the roadside. Can you handle it?"
"President Liu, don't worry, leave it to me. Even though I feel like you've kind of sweet-talked me into this, I'm happy to do it," Wang Chao replied gleefully.
"Why would I trick you? This is called making full use of resources. But don't just focus on this, unless you're planning to move into an administrative role in the future," Liu Banxia said.
"You'd better think it through. If you decide to move to an administrative role, all the hardship you've endured in the Emergency Department will have been for nothing. With your family's connections, you don't even need to struggle so hard in this regard."
"President Liu, you've really hit the nail on the head. The main issue now is that my ideas don't align with my family's. When they found out I joined the Emergency Department, they gave me a real earful," Wang Chao said with a rueful expression.
"I'm not worse than anyone else. Even if I can't become a famous doctor like you in the future, I can still be a competent surgeon. We'll see when the time comes. Anyway, I'm in the Emergency Department for now."
Liu Banxia patted his shoulder. This is what you call a fortunate problem.
For many recently graduated medical students, finding a job that satisfies them is truly difficult. But for Wang Chao, the wide array of choices was what made it so hard to decide.
If Liu Banxia hadn't been deceived when he graduated, the Liu Banxia of today wouldn't exist. He would basically be idling his days away, drinking tea, and occasionally performing minor surgeries.
"Are you even competent? Would you draw blood like this if it were your own child? The child's stomach is still hurting, and it's been over half an hour!"
Just then, an angry yell came from a nearby consultation bed.
Without any hesitation, Liu Banxia immediately walked over. An angry shout like that definitely means there's a conflict.
"I'm very sorry. We'll have our most skilled nurse come and draw the child's blood," Wang Ying's voice said before Liu Banxia even got close.
"Look for yourself! The child was already in pain, and you pricked him three times! Would you like it if it were you? Aren't you just using my son for practice?" the child's father still hadn't calmed down.
"Let me through. Everyone, please don't crowd around. We're in a hospital; please wait quietly for your turn. Gawking at commotion like this can cause problems," Liu Banxia said a few words and squeezed through the crowd.
He then saw Qi Wentai standing to one side, and a new intern nurse wiping away tears nearby. A six or seven-year-old boy lay on the bed, whimpering, with the angry father standing beside him.
Seeing this scene, it was clear what had happened.
"Sir, hello. I'm the temporary head of the Emergency Department, and I apologize to you," Liu Banxia said.
"However, our priority right now is to treat the child. I'll take over his care from now on, and I'll draw his blood personally. Qi Wentai, organize the medical records and give them to me. Xu Dan, I remember you have a little duck charm, right? Let this young man play with it for a while."
"Doctor, you really can't bully people like this. You can't just jab him with needles as if he were some stray you picked up, just because he's not your own child," the child's father continued, though his tone had softened somewhat.
Wang Ying had admitted her mistake, and now Liu Banxia, the head of the Emergency Department, had also apologized. Their attitude was very good.
Liu Banxia sat directly on the hospital bed and took the little boy into his arms. He retied the tourniquet and then palpated the child's arm.
"How old are you? How much does your tummy hurt? Have you pooped?" Liu Banxia asked the young patient.
The little boy shook his head, tears still welling in the corners of his eyes. "It hurts a lot. No poop."
"In a little while, Uncle will make your tummy stop hurting. What kind of snacks do you usually like?" Liu Banxia asked again.
Although his tummy still hurt a bit, the young patient seemed quite interested in food and thought about it very seriously. Seizing this opportunity, Liu Banxia inserted the needle into a vein and quickly attached a blood collection vial.
"You're so brave! Other kids must really admire you." Seeing the little boy's mouth open as if to cry, Liu Banxia hurriedly added.
The little boy, who was on the verge of tears, swallowed his sob, his eyes wide with surprise.
The nurses watching from the side were startled because Liu Banxia had performed a blind stick. He hadn't even looked at the vein; he just palpated with his fingers and then inserted the needle.
That wasn't all. While switching blood collection tubes and loosening the tourniquet, he didn't look at his hands at all, keeping his eyes fixed on the young patient.
After the blood was drawn, Qi Wentai also had the recent B-ultrasound results ready. This young patient was now Liu Banxia's responsibility, and even if Qi Wentai was reluctant, he had no say in the matter.
"When did the child start having stomach pain? Has his diet changed lately?" Liu Banxia asked, after gently pressing the child's abdomen a few times.
"It started this morning," the child's father replied.
"At first, we thought he was pretending to be sick to get a toy. But when we saw that he was in real pain, we rushed him to the hospital. Doctor, I was a bit anxious earlier, I apologize."
"Let's be understanding of each other. A child's veins are fine, and they tend to move a lot. This also serves as a reminder for us that we need to train some skilled phlebotomists," Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"According to the B-ultrasound, there doesn't seem to be any major problem. The blood sample has been sent for testing. In a little while, please take your child for a urine and stool test, though it might take some effort," Liu Banxia said.
"Once these samples are submitted, I'll call the lab to have them processed urgently. If the abdominal pain isn't caused by enteritis, we might need to do an abdominal CT scan."
"During my physical examination just now, the child's abdomen was soft. There were no positive physical examination findings in the areas of organs prone to issues, like the appendix or gallbladder."
"Alright, I'll coax him for a bit and then take him to the toilet. The urine test should be fine, but the stool test might be tricky. Unlike adults, children can't always produce a sample on demand," the child's father said.
"That's fine. We'll send each sample as soon as we get it. Li Hao, please accompany this gentleman and ensure the samples are submitted promptly," Liu Banxia said.
"Okay, Teacher Liu," Li Hao replied promptly.
By now, the father's anger had completely subsided. It was common knowledge that waiting for test results at a hospital could take a long time, so having them expedited showed that the hospital was considerate of his child.
"Teacher Liu, Sister Wang, I..." the young nurse began, but couldn't continue, only managing to wipe away her tears.
"It's alright. Go wash your face. We'll practice diligently later. Children are afraid of pain, and their arms tend to move a lot," Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"Dr. Liu, rest assured. I will be more stringent in my supervision from now on," Wang Ying said.
"Sister Wang, you're being too formal. Dealing with these young patients can be challenging, even for someone as capable as Sun Wukong. We just need to practice more and improve our professional skills," Liu Banxia said.
Wang Ying nodded and led the crying nurse away.
"Qi Wentai, write an incident report before you leave work this evening," Liu Banxia said.
Qi Wentai frowned. "Why do I have to write it? The child moved, what has that got to do with me?"
"Don't you have a clue what it has to do with you? You knew it would be difficult to draw blood from a child, so why didn't you ask an experienced colleague from the department to do it? Just trying to muddle through your work? If you can do the job, do it. If you can't, then get out!" Liu Banxia didn't spare him any face at all.
The Emergency Department is different from the outpatient clinic, which has a dedicated phlebotomy room. Here in the ER, they just grab whichever nurse or intern is available to draw blood.
The child wasn't to blame, nor the intern nurse, nor the angry father. The fault lay with the doctor overseeing the diagnosis. When assigning responsibility, you can't just blame everyone indiscriminately; you have to find the root cause.
Qi Wentai wasn't a rookie. If he had just been a bit more conscientious, things wouldn't have escalated to this point today.
It had already been very dangerous. If the child's father had been a bit more volatile, it could have easily turned into a physical altercation. That would have been a completely different, and very dangerous, story.
