Chapter 221: 221 Became a Real Celebrity
The male patient from that day was smoothly discharged after spending three days in the hospital.
Conflicts arising from emotional disputes are often hard to clarify. The best the hospital could do was provide meticulous treatment, and that was the extent of their involvement.
In these few days, the interns had familiarized themselves with the rhythm of the Emergency Department and Liu Banxia's working style. He seemed laid-back but was actually very strict.
When there were no patients, he was all fun and games. But when patients arrived, he transformed. He would spring surprise questions on them, and if they couldn't answer, they wouldn't get the overtime reward.
It was a real reward. Especially after Su Wenhao experienced overtime once, it became an honor the interns strived for.
When things were slow, Liu Banxia would use the night shift to teach the basics of suturing and share useful tips. He would even review past cases with everyone.
Even though there were no emergencies requiring surgery during those few days, they felt they had learned many new things in the Emergency Department of the Second Hospital.
Liu Banxia loved to talk. When explaining cases, he didn't just talk about one patient but would simulate many scenarios, sometimes making it feel like solving riddles in a game.
Of course, it was still unknown how long their interest would last. However, at that time, the learning atmosphere in the Emergency Department was quite strong.
"Dr. Liu, Dr. Liu, did you watch the news last night?" Xu Dan, who had just arrived for work, eagerly asked.
"No, I didn't. Where would I find the time? I don't even get enough sleep," Liu Banxia said with a bitter smile.
"Wow, you were on the news yesterday!" Xu Dan said joyfully.
"First, you were featured in Binhai News, and then a feature program aired around ten o'clock. It detailed the work of medical staff and even included footage of you saving people."
"What's this all about? Why would they feature me? Shouldn't they be focusing on our Second Hospital?" Liu Banxia asked in surprise.
"How would I know? Anyway, our Second Hospital was mentioned too. They said Binhai City is still a bit weak in emergency care, and the Second Hospital is working to restore its Emergency Department to contribute to Binhai City," Xu Dan said.
"And then they talked about you, praising you a lot. They mentioned you saving people in Jinshui District, how you always think from the patient's perspective, and how careful and patient you are in your work. That's pretty much it."
"Anyway, I heard from my uncle that you're very likely to be named one of Binhai City's Top Ten Youths this year. At the very least, an Outstanding Individual award is pretty much guaranteed."
Hearing Xu Dan's words, Liu Banxia was even more confused. Hasn't Qu Feng's report deviated a bit? Shouldn't the Second Hospital be the protagonist? How did it become all about me?
Then he became a little worried. Have I stolen the limelight? If this affects the Chief Director and Zhou Shuwen's big plans, I'll have nowhere to cry even if I want to.
I just treated Qu Feng and the others to chicken drumsticks twice. They can't favor me this much; this is pushing me into a pit of fire!
"Banxia, congratulations. Yesterday's news coverage was very good." At this moment, Wang Ying also walked over.
"Sister Wang, please don't tease me. With such a big mess-up, what should I do?" Liu Banxia said with a bitter smile.
"What mess-up? Did an emergency patient have an accident last night? I didn't see any record of it," Wang Ying asked in surprise.
"I mean the report. According to Xu Dan, it seems I stole all the limelight," Liu Banxia quickly explained.
"Oh, I thought it was something else. You think you stole the limelight? That was the hospital letting you have it. Otherwise, why wouldn't they report on Director Zhou?" Wang Ying said with a smile.
"Silly boy, just focus on your work and don't overthink it. Just pocket the honors they give you; others couldn't get them even if they wanted to."
Wang Ying's words stunned Liu Banxia. Does this mean it was the hospital's arrangement? But why? My family doesn't have any backing. Why pick on me?
With a mind full of questions, he strolled over to the Anorectal Department. Doudou's ear just needed one last dressing change today, and that would be it. Qiu Huaili still had to endure for another day or two.
"Brother, hold on a second. Your sister-in-law was free yesterday and watched the news. You really made a splash!" Qiu Huaili said excitedly.
"Brother Qiu, you saw it too?" Liu Banxia picked up a bunch of grapes, supposedly imported from Australia.
"You were so prominent, how could I not know?" Qiu Huaili said.
"I regret it now. I was just too hesitant; otherwise, I should have gone up and praised you too. Even that young man you guys managed to send away, the one with the liver condition, was praising you."
"Brother Qiu, you're experienced and knowledgeable. Help me analyze this: what exactly is the hospital thinking? I heard from our head nurse that this interview was pretty much arranged by the hospital," Liu Banxia asked.
"Why do you care what they're thinking? As long as it doesn't put us at a disadvantage, it's fine," Qiu Huaili said nonchalantly.
"Banxia, no matter what they want to do, just cooperate," Wang Jingxian said with a smile.
"Your hospital must be planning a big move, and you're like the vanguard. You being pushed forward also represents the honor of the Second Hospital. Besides, it's not like they're completely highlighting you; there was still some coverage of the Second Hospital."
Liu Banxia nodded and casually picked up the capering Doudou who was nearby. Playing with this little one every day was quite enjoyable.
His heart still felt a bit uneasy. He needed to find a chance to sound out Zhou Shuwen about this. However, Zhou Shuwen had been very busy recently. He would head straight to the operating room whenever he came to the Emergency Department, sometimes without even having time to speak.
"Oh, by the way, brother, once I'm fully recovered, we need to take a picture together and hang it in my office. You're a real celebrity; we must get a photo for remembrance," Qiu Huaili continued.
"Oh, come on, you're like my own brother, right? Is this really necessary?" Liu Banxia said, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
"Why wouldn't it be? I have photos with celebrities too, but what's the use of those? You can get those if you have money. You're different; you have real skills," Qiu Huaili said.
"Fine, fine, as long as you're happy. Let's change your dressing first. I still have a group of interns waiting over there," Liu Banxia said helplessly.
Hearing this, Qiu Huaili's face fell again. The sensation of a dressing change was truly awful. He had two fistula tracts, each with a seton tied.
DING! Daily task completed (1/20)
Earned 5 experience points, diagnostic skill proficiency +3 points, fistula threading and ligation technique proficiency +50 points.
"It's going faster than I expected. In the next day or two, the setons should fall off. After that, we'll do a blood test, and if there's no inflammation, you can be discharged," Liu Banxia said with a smile after finishing the dressing change.
"Really? To be honest, I've truly had enough of staying in the hospital," Qiu Huaili said happily.
"It's the same for everyone. Just hang in there a little longer. If your side isn't settled, I wouldn't dare take a break. Otherwise, I'm afraid you'd be wary if someone else had to change your dressing," Liu Banxia joked.
"You absolutely mustn't take any time off! Every day when others outside are having their dressings changed, I don't even dare to go out. I'm afraid they'll think I'm gloating," Qiu Huaili said anxiously.
"I was chatting with Director Jiang yesterday, and he was praising you too. He kept saying he regretted acting too late; otherwise, you would have been his guy."
"Sigh... I still owe Director Jiang a teaching session. I'll see about this afternoon. If I have time, I'll have to make it up to him," Liu Banxia said.
These past few days, he had been so busy looking after the interns that he hadn't been able to attend to Jiang Tao. Jiang Tao had helped him a lot in the beginning; these were debts of gratitude that could never be fully repaid.
When Liu Banxia sat down on the sofa, Doudou, looking delighted, crawled over to him. It had probably become a habit these past few days, knowing it was time to get its ear attended to.
In reality, for the little one, not changing the dressing today wouldn't have been an issue. Just like Qiu Huaili, once his setons fell off, he would only need a dressing change once a day.
It wasn't that more frequent dressing changes were better for the wound; it also depended on the healing progress. After all, each dressing change would put some pressure on the wound.
Changing little Doudou's dressing yielded no experience or skill points.
Liu Banxia played a hand-grabbing game with Doudou for a while, then gathered a pile of fruit and headed for Jiang Tao's office.
"You saw the news yesterday, right?" Jiang Tao asked with a smile.
Liu Banxia shook his head. "No, I only heard about it today. I'm feeling apprehensive and treading on thin ice."
Jiang Tao gave him a surprised look, then nodded. "Not bad. Having such thoughts proves you haven't become arrogant. Old Zhou didn't misjudge you."
"Director Jiang, is there an inside story?" Liu Banxia pressed.
"What would I know? But you don't need to worry too much. Old Zhou definitely agreed to this. Would he harm you?" Jiang Tao said with a smile.
"I reckon it's a kind of reform. You're like the test subject for this reform. If they don't promote you, who would they promote? Among the resident doctors who stayed on in the past two years, none can compare to you."
"Just accept the honors when they're given. You might even get a salary grade increase at the end of the year. Just concentrate on your work; overthinking is useless, right?"
Liu Banxia nodded. "Okay. I'll see if I have time this afternoon. If there's nothing major, I'll come over and demonstrate the dressing change. Lately, I've been watching those six from my department, and I haven't had a single free moment."
"Haha, now you know how tough it is to mentor people, right? This is just the beginning," Jiang Tao said with a laugh.
"Sigh... You can say that again. Sometimes I wonder how I managed in the past. I won't chat any longer; I have to go back and watch them. I've been out for a while now," Liu Banxia said.
As he walked back, Liu Banxia was still mulling things over.
Although receiving honors was a good thing, he also knew that a tall tree attracts the wind. While what he had shown so far seemed impressive and sophisticated, that was about the extent of it.
He even worried that Zhou Shuwen and the others might have misjudged him based on his performance, inflating his image too much. If that happened, it would be difficult to manage the fallout.
