Chapter 21: The Last Stand and the Arrival of a Hero

"Here!" Barton tossed Vance a fresh magazine, the gesture a lifeline amidst the chaos. "Load it and get ready to fire!"

Vance fumbled briefly but managed to reload, his hands shaking as he fell back into the rhythm of battle. "Thanks, Barton!" he shouted, his voice rising above the din.

The undead were now within mere feet of them, their grotesque faces contorted in hunger. A zombie lunged at Cruz, who barely sidestepped in time, his heart racing. "Watch out!" he cried, firing instinctively. The bullet struck true, but more zombies swarmed in to fill the gap.

"We need to pull back!" Pan shouted, desperation filling his tone. The soldiers were beginning to tire; the heat, the fighting, and the never-ending tide of zombies were wearing them down.

"Not yet!" Wood barked back, his voice firm. "We'll find a way out. We just need to hold for a few more minutes!"

But as the words left his lips, a massive zombies broke through the thin line of defense, overwhelming Clayton and Williams. The two soldiers fought valiantly, but one after the other, they were pulled into the zombies, their screams echoing through the chaos.

"No! Clayton! Williams!" Vance screamed, his heart sinking as he watched his friends disappear.

"We need to regroup!" Barton shouted, trying to keep a semblance of order. "Get back to me! We'll make our last stand together!"

The remaining soldiers scrambled to form a tighter circle, their backs pressed against each other, rifles raised. Alina took up her sniper position once again, focusing her fire, knowing that each shot counted.

"I see a path!" Alina called out, her eyes scanning the battlefield. "To the east! We can break through!"

"Then let's move!" Wood commanded, the urgency in his voice unmistakable.

The soldiers began to fight their way toward the east, moving as one cohesive unit, firing relentlessly at the approaching zombies. Vance, Barton, Wood, Cruz, and Pan pushed forward, driven by a mixture of fear and fierce determination.

"Stay together! Don't look back!" Wood urged, leading the charge. They squeezed off rounds with deadly precision, their teamwork an unyielding shield against the oncoming zombies.

"I'm not going to let this be the end!" Pan shouted, a fire igniting within him. He pushed forward, determination surges in the blood.

As they neared the makeshift exit, the remaining zombies lunged at them, but Wood and Barton stood firm, refusing to yield. "Keep moving!" Wood yelled, firing shot after shot, taking down one zombie after another.

Finally, they reached the clearing Alina had spotted. "This way! Move!" she shouted, directing them toward the opening.

But just as they began to slip through, a massive figure emerged from the shadows—a particularly grotesque zombie, towering over the others, its decayed flesh hanging in shreds. It roared, a guttural sound that sent chills down their spines.

"What the hell is that?" Vance gasped, panic rising as the creature barreled toward them.

"Stay focused! Don't let fear take hold!" Barton commanded, standing his ground. He aimed his rifle at the creature's head, heart pounding.

Wood, seeing the danger, took a step forward. "We'll take it down together!"

With their hearts racing, the soldiers fired simultaneously, bullets flying as they aimed for the massive zombie. The creature staggered but continued its advance, unfazed by the onslaught.

"Aim for the eyes! We need to bring it down!" Wood shouted, determination boiling within him.

Vance and Cruz worked together, firing in unison as they tried to take the beast down. The sound of their bullets striking flesh echoed through the clearing.

But just as they thought they had the upper hand, the creature lunged, swinging its massive arm and knocking Cruz off his feet.

"Cruz!" Vance cried out, his voice filled with horror as he watched his comrade go down.

"Get up! We have to keep fighting!" Wood yelled, his own heart racing.

With a surge of adrenaline, Vance rushed toward Cruz, helping him to his feet just as the massive zombie closed in.

"Thank you! Let's finish this!" Cruz shouted, determination lighting his eyes once more.

The soldiers formed a tight circle again, their rifles raised as they prepared for one final stand against the monstrosity.

"On three! One… two… three!" Wood called, and together they unleashed a hail of bullets.

The massive zombie staggered, its roars turning into pained growls as they continued to shoot. Finally, with one last shot aimed directly at its eye, the creature fell to the ground with a deafening thud, shaking the earth beneath them.

"We did it!" Vance shouted, a mix of disbelief and relief flooding his voice.

But their victory was short-lived. More zombies continued to pour into the clearing, their growls are getting louder and louder.

"We need to retreat quickly!" Barton shouted, his voice hoarse from shouting.

With renewed urgency, the soldiers pressed forward, navigating through the mass of undead, fighting with every ounce of strength they had left.

"Catch your breath! We need to regroup!" Wood ordered, glancing back at the chaos they had just escaped.

The air was thick with the smell of sweat and blood, and the sounds of the battle faded to a distant roar.

"We've lost so many…" Pan murmured, his voice shaking as he looked at his comrades.

Barton placed a hand on his shoulder. "We honor them by continuing to fight. We can't let their sacrifices be in vain."

"But what do we do now?" Vance asked, desperation creeping back into his voice.

"We keep moving," Wood said firmly. "We find a safe place, regroup, and plan our next move. We can't let fear dictate our actions."

"To the left, another huge zombie!" Alina shouted in fear. "And there are more zombies behind it!"

"Quick! Move closer to the building!" Wood commanded calmly, though everyone knew this time they were doomed.

Just as despair took hold, a flash of lightning shot from the distance. The massive zombie shuddered for a moment and then, with a loud "bang!", collapsed.

"What just happened? It actually went down..."

Just now they put in a lot of effort to knock down a huge zombie, and now he actually fell down on his own...

Then, they witnessed something even more unbelievable—a giant tornado swept through, lifting all the zombies in that area and shredding them into pulp within its whirling vortex.

 *** *** ***

Ander and the others had driven for some time when they suddenly saw a few soldiers surrounded by zombies ahead, with the leader being an unusually tall zombie. After Ander got out of the car, he immediately tapped into the energy of space and shot a lightning bolt. His aim was good, and it struck the head of the massive zombie.

Soldiers were heroes defending the people, and Ander had always held them in high regard, so he had to save them. Using his superpowers, Ander was surrounded by lightning as he rose into the air, and with a wave of his hands, a tornado gradually formed, sweeping toward the large group of zombies…

When the tornado disappeared, the soldiers saw a man standing mid-air like a superhero, his body crackling with electricity. He raised his hand in a salute to the soldiers. Although the gesture was not entirely correct, the soldiers knew this man had saved them.

Due to the distance, others might not have seen it clearly, but Elena could see clearly in the sniper scope. In that moment, Ander was her hero.

It wasn't just the soldiers who saw this; the cameras on their helmets also captured the scene, which was immediately sent back to the command center, causing an uproar!

"Did you see that? Is he a superman?" Damon said excitedly.

"Peter, did you send the footage back?" Wood asked.

"Yes, Captain, I believe the command center has seen it," Peter replied.

"He's our friend. I can feel he means us no malicious." Cruz said, also excited.

"And he just saved us. Captain, we should go greet him." Asaria said to Wood.

"Indeed, we should."

But just as they were about to approach, Ander had already gotten back into the car and left. Helping the soldiers was just a small incident, and Ander didn't take it seriously.

"Ander, that pose you struck was so cool!" Celine said, her eyes filled with admiration, while Marina and the other three looked at him with starry eyes, clearly smitten.

"Right? I think so too," Ander said, a little proud.

Alexa and Anllela exchanged puzzled looks before Anllela couldn't hold back any longer and asked, "Ander, how can you use two superpowers at the same time?"

Ander looked at her in confusion and asked, "Can't you?"

Anllela rolled her eyes and replied, "Of course not. I've never heard of any superpowered person being able to use two powers at the same time."

"Maybe it's because every superpowered person can only have one ability, so you've never seen it?" Ander speculated.

"That's nonsense! There are a few people who have two powers, but I've never seen them use both at once."

"Anllela's right, what you're doing is illogical," Alexa added.

Ander shrugged and said, "Who cares if it's logical? As long as it works, that's all that matters."
