Chapter 16: Cold Shelter

Tina looked around, feeling increasingly anxious. She suggested, "We can hide in the cold storage room. There's a small door, maybe we can escape the zombies."

"Good idea!" Kuilading nodded immediately. "Quick, let's go!" They turned to rush toward the cold storage but accidentally knocked over a nearby shelf, causing a loud crash.

"Quick! Let's go in quickly!" Jennifer whispered urgently, rushing to open the cold storage door. The four of them squeezed inside and carefully shut the door. It was dark and damp inside, the hum of the air conditioning adding to the chill in the air.

"Hope they didn't notice us." Karen whispered, her voice filled with unease.

Just as they were holding their breath, the low roars of zombies came from outside. It seemed that several zombies were approaching, hitting the door of the supermarket, and the metallic sound was deafening.

"I think they found us." Kuilading clutched a bottle of water tightly, fear flashing in his eyes, "What are we going to do?"

"Wait and see if they will leave." Tina tried her best to calm down, secretly thinking about her next plan. She knew she had to act when it was safe.

The sounds outside were sometimes high-pitched and sometimes low, as if they were wandering endlessly. After a few minutes, the atmosphere in the cold room became increasingly heavy, and the four people's worries reached their highest point.

"How about trying to open the door? We can rush out!" Jennifer suggested, but she was also aware of the danger of this choice.

Tina was silent for a moment, then whispered: "No, we can't act now. Wait, we have to observe quietly for a while."

At this moment, the sounds outside suddenly became quiet. The four of them couldn't help but hold their breath and looked at each other. The fear in their hearts seemed to condense into an invisible pressure at this moment.

"Did you hear that?" Kuilading asked in a low voice, doubts in his eyes.

"I heard it...it seems they are gone." Karen replied in a low voice.

Tina carefully put her ear to the cold room door and listened quietly. It seemed to get quiet outside, but she couldn't relax in her heart. "Let's not take any chances and wait a while."

After a few minutes, there was still no sound. Tina finally felt relieved and said to the four of them, "Okay, maybe we can go out and take a look now."

"Is it really okay?" Jennifer was a little uneasy, but her curiosity also made her want to go out.

"Yes, remember to be careful and keep quiet." After Tina finished speaking, she slowly opened the door of the refrigerator room, feeling a little nervous but also a little expectant.

When the door opened, the four of them held their breath and cautiously poked their heads out. There was still a chaotic scene all around, and the supermarket seemed to have quieted down. Only a few cans were still rolling to the ground on the shelves not far away.

"It seems the zombies are really gone." Karen whispered, with a hint of expectation on her face.

"Let's get out quickly." Jennifer suggested, eyes full of urgency.

Tina nodded and took the lead to carefully walk out of the refrigerator. She looked around and found that the supermarket was still empty, but there was a suffocating sense of oppression.

"Quick, move towards the door!" she said urgently, and the four of them moved towards the door quickly and carefully.

Just when they were about to reach the door, there was a sudden rush of footsteps, and then a zombie jumped out from behind the shelf next to it and rushed toward them!

"Careful!" Tina yelled, dodging quickly and swinging her kitchen knife at the zombie. The blade scratched across the zombie's body, and the zombie let out a shrill roar and then fell to the ground.

"Let's go!" Karen did not hesitate and led them to rush out of the supermarket. The four girls' hearts were filled with fear and despair, but they knew they must live, no matter what.

On the chaotic streets, the four people ran quickly, but their previous panic and helplessness still echoed in their minds. They passed through one street after another, with the roars of zombies chasing after them.

Finally, they ran to the entrance of an alley. The four of them stopped, panting, and filled with doubts about the future.

"We...what should we do?" Kuilading said tremblingly, the fear in his heart still not disappearing.

"We can't stop, we have to keep moving forward." Tina smiled reluctantly, trying to look calm, "We have to find a safe place and then figure out a way."

"I hope we can find my home." Karen's eyes flashed with determination, and it was obvious that she had made up her mind.

"We will find it. As long as we stick together, we will survive." Jennifer encouraged, with a hint of courage.

The four of them walked cautiously towards the street, feeling uneasy about the scene around them. Most of the shops on the roadside were closed, and the iron bars on the windows were badly damaged, as if zombies might rush out from inside at any time. Kuilading always had a trace of fear in her heart, but she still tried to stay calm.

"We need to find a safe place," Tina said, determination in her voice. "A place where you can temporarily hide from zombies."

"I saw a small cafe in front of me!" Jennifer pointed to a dilapidated building in front of her. There was a faint light inside, and it seemed like there were people inside.

The four of them quickly ran towards the coffee shop, a glimmer of hope igniting in their hearts. When they arrived, they found the door ajar and there seemed to be no sign of zombies inside. Tina looked out worriedly. The surrounding streets were still quiet, as if everything was closed by some kind of force.

"Let's go in," Karen said, anticipation in her eyes. They quickly walked into the cafe, only to find it empty, with only a few tables and chairs scattered around.

"It looks like there's no one," Kuilading whispered, feeling uneasy.

The four of them began to check the cafe and found a small kitchen in the back with some ingredients that had not been taken away. Tina quickly said: "We can stay here temporarily and we can get some food."

"But we have to be careful," Jennifer reminded, "otherwise if zombies appear, we will be doomed."

As they were busy searching, the low growls of zombies could be heard outside, followed by hurried footsteps. The four of them exchanged looks, hearts tightening.

"Quick! Close the door!" Tina shouted, and the four of them rushed to close the door, only to find the back door of the café wide open.

"We can't stay here!" Karen said in panic. "If zombies get in, we're in danger!"

At that moment, the growling outside grew louder, and the four of them nervously peered at the door. Kuilading gripped her baseball bat tightly, her heartbeat racing. Suddenly, the door was smashed open, and a zombie lunged inside, growling deeply as it charged toward them.

"Watch out!" Jennifer screamed. The four of them quickly backed away, but there was nowhere to retreat.

"I'll take it! Let me try!" Tina shouted, lifting her kitchen knife, ready to face the threat. The zombie closed in, but Tina felt no fear—her resolve only grew stronger.

"I'll help you!" Karen shouted, rushing forward with a chair to block the zombie's attack. Together, they managed to push the zombie to the ground.

However, the appearance of the zombie seemed to trigger a hidden danger, and soon more zombies poured in from outside. The four of them, seeing no way to escape, hurried toward the café's back kitchen.

"Quick, get in!" Tina shouted, pushing Jennifer ahead and swinging her kitchen knife at the zombies closing in. The door to the cold storage room appeared in front of them, a final refuge.

Once inside the cold storage room, Karen slammed the door shut, and the four of them looked at each other, the uneasy atmosphere once again settling in.

"We've got frozen food here; at least we can hold out for a while," Kuilading said, her voice trembling with anxiety.

"But we're still trapped," Jennifer said, her eyes full of concern. "There's no way out."

"I... I think the zombies will find us," Karen said, her voice shaking with fear.

"How about we quietly observe the situation outside for a bit?" Tina suggested calmly, trying to stay composed. She knew that panicking would only lead to bad decisions.

The four of them sat silently in the cold storage room, occasionally hearing the growls of zombies and heavy banging from outside. The sense of unease grew stronger. Time seems to pass very slowly, and whether they waited or tried to escape, the situation felt hopeless.

"This isn't going to work," Tina whispered. "We have to find a way out, find a safe place."

"But there are zombies everywhere," Kuilading said helplessly. "We couldn't get out at all."
