Chapter 13: Desperate Choices
"This sound... how could there be a baby?" She couldn't hide her shock and confusion. At that moment, through a crack in the door, she saw a frantic woman, holding a crying baby, quickly running through the hall. The heads of the zombies turned towards them one after another, and started to chase them with ferocious faces.
"It's that woman from earlier, she's back!" Priyanka worried silently and called out to her softly, "Over here, come quickly!"
Perhaps Priyanka's voice was too faint, and the woman didn't hear her call.
At this point, the woman was clearly cornered, with zombies surrounding her, forcing her back. Finally, as if making a firm decision, she took a deep breath, placed the baby on a nearby chair, and said, "Don't blame me for being heartless, it's your mother who abandoned you." She then turned and ran. She hoped the zombies would be distracted by the baby's cries, allowing her to escape.
However, things didn't go as she hoped. The zombies all turned toward the woman, and in an instant, they pounced on her. The woman fell to the ground, and the zombies' sharp teeth and claws pierced her skin as she let out a pitiful scream. As the zombies devoured her, her voice grew weaker and weaker, eventually falling silent.
At that moment, another desperate scream echoed, and Priyanka saw a young mother dragging a child, around five years old, trying to evade the zombies' pursuit. The child's eyes were filled with terror as he clung tightly to his mother's hand, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Mom, I'm scared…"
The young mother stopped, her eyes filled with sorrow and helplessness. She squatted down, gently stroking the child's face, and softly said, "You're the bravest, mommy loves you. Now, be brave, okay?"
The child's eyes were filled with tears as he nodded.
The mother took a deep breath, lifted her head, and with determination, shoved the child toward a gap, then resolutely stood in front of the zombies, trying to buy the child time to escape. The zombies immediately swarmed her, gnawing at her limbs and neck. The mother's vision blurred, but her last glance was directed at the child's fleeing form, her eyes filled with a sense of relief.
Priyanka witnessed all of this, her heart shaken to its core. She took a deep breath, trying to keep the fear and sadness from consuming her. She knew she had to survive. In this disaster, every choice and every second determined life or death, and she could no longer hesitate.
The impulse to save the woman earlier made her realize even more—that this place wasn't one where kindness could flourish.
After a while, she scanned the area outside and found no zombies. She then picked up her phone and dialed her daughter Aria. Fortunately, the phone rang a few times and was answered.
"Aria, where are you?" Priyanka felt relief but couldn't make a sound too loud. On the other end, Aria, clearly also cautious, whispered, "Aizawa and I are stuck in a jewelry store in Chinatown. I can't read the sign, I don't know the name of the store, but Aizawa and I are fine, and the owner and his daughter are nice."
"Stay in the store and don't move, I'll come rescue you."
"Mom, can you make it?"
"I've found a way out of the hospital, I'm coming to rescue you."
"Alright, the store is not far from the street, you should be able to find it as soon as you enter Chinatown."
"Good, you and Aizawa stay in the store, I'll get to you as quickly as I can."
In the hall, the zombies were crazily chasing the last few remaining medical staff and patients, with every person's struggle and despair transforming into silent screams in this disaster.
Priyanka took a deep breath. To rescue her daughter, she decided not to stay any longer in this perilous place. She avoided the zombies' line of sight and quickly moved through the hall, heading toward the other side of the hospital. She remembered there was a staff passage that connected to the back door of the hospital. Maybe she could leave through there.
However, as she neared the passage entrance, a voice from the corner trembled with fear.
"Please... please, save me..."
Priyanka instinctively turned around and saw a patient, badly injured, with pale skin and his arm wrapped in temporary bandages. He leaned against the wall, trembling, extending a hand toward her, his eyes shining with a glimmer of hope.
Priyanka's heart involuntarily clenched. Logic and instinct battled in her mind. She knew that any hesitation could put her in danger, but the helpless look in his eyes made it impossible for her to ignore.
"Please..." he whispered, "I don't want to die here…"
Priyanka took a deep breath, hesitated for a moment, and finally walked quickly to his side, carefully helping him up. "Come on, don't make a sound, I'll take you to a safe place."
"Th... thank you..." His voice was faint, filled with intense gratitude, and his eyes sparkled with a trace of hope.
She struggled to help him up and moved toward the staff passage. However, after taking just a few steps, the man suddenly collapsed to the ground, his lips turning blue, and his breathing became rapid. Priyanka quickly knelt down to check and noticed that his heartbeat began to weaken.
"Damn it, his condition is bad…" Priyanka murmured, gritting her teeth to suppress the anxiety, pulling out her first aid kit from her pocket to attempt basic CPR.
At that moment, a zombie's shadow appeared at the end of the passage. Priyanka's heart tightened, and she stood up straight, noticing that the zombie seemed to have smelled the blood and was slowly approaching them.
"We need to move, fast!" she whispered to the man, trying to help him stand.
The man struggled to get up, but his steps were unsteady, clearly weakened. The sound of the zombie's footsteps grew louder, and Priyanka's heartbeat quickened. She couldn't wait any longer. She gritted her teeth, turned around, and forcefully dragged the man toward the exit.
"Let… let me go…" The man weakly said, his eyes filled with a glimmer of resignation. "You should escape… I'll… I'll slow you down…"
Priyanka's hand tightly gripped his, her gaze firm. "No, I won't let you die here. You can survive, just hold on a little longer."
The man trembled as he let out a faint laugh, a flicker of weak gratitude in his eyes. But soon, his sight began to blur, and his breath grew fainter and fainter. The man could no longer hold on, the flame of life slowly extinguished in his eyes.
With the zombies drawing near, Priyanka gently lowered the man's body and whispered, "I'm sorry…"
She stood up, took one last look at the man's lifeless form, and turned to dash toward the exit of the corridor.
Priyanka hurried through the hallway, the dragging, heavy footsteps of the zombies echoing in her ears. Her heart raced like thunder, suppressing the unease inside, only wanting to find a safe place to catch her breath. Yet, at every corner, behind every door, could lie the next deadly threat.
"Just a few more steps to the back door…" she silently counted her steps in her mind. The staff passage here led directly to a small alley behind the hospital, her only hope now.
And then, the back door appeared. Priyanka pushed it open violently, and the scene before her made her pause—trash piled up in the alley, metal garbage bins and cardboard boxes scattered across the ground, the air thick with the stench of decay. However, there were no signs of zombies here, and it seemed like a temporary refuge.
She quickly shut the door behind her, leaning against the wall to catch her breath, finally feeling a slight relief. The silence around her made her hear her own heartbeat, and as she recalled the look in the man's eyes before he passed, waves of sorrow and unease swelled within her.
But she knew she couldn't stay too long. As she collected her thoughts and prepared to continue her escape, a low moan suddenly came from the other side of the alley. Priyanka tensed instantly, gripping the IV pole tightly as she slowly moved toward the sound.
In the corner of the alley, a man was crouching with his back to her. His movements were slow, and the sounds he made were unsettling. She held her breath, realizing that this man was likely already a zombie.
Priyanka quietly stepped back but accidentally kicked an empty bottle on the ground, making a loud clink. The man turned around instantly, and sure enough, it was a pale, twisted zombie face. His vacant eyes locked onto her, and he let out a low growl, lunging toward her.
"Damn it!" Priyanka screamed, swinging the IV pole with all her strength toward the zombie's head. The zombie's movements were briefly slowed by the blow, but it quickly regained its footing and began advancing again.
She didn't hesitate this time, swinging the IV pole once more, putting everything into the strike. The pole hit the zombie's forehead, and it collapsed to the ground, finally quiet.
