Chapter 423: Tales from the Mine, III
James didn't know how capable Wilfred was, he just saw an old man. He was confident that he'd have to protect him one way or another. He thought Sekani let him come under a special circumstance.
He just didn't understand on what grounds did Sekani trust him so much with an old man to protect. They barely knew each other.
He mauled over it so much and settled on the fact that, maybe Dean Whitmore and Jesùs Silva vouched for him before they arrived at the Waynworth Estate.
James should've noticed that the way Wilfred walked, made him far from an ordinary old man. Even with their hike to the top of the mine, he didn't show any fatigue but that was another thing James didn't notice.
"I—"
He didn't get to finish his sentence about wanting to take the lead when Wilfred grabbed him by his clothes and jerked him closer to him. James suddenly saw himself face to face with the old man, the wrinkles were there but his eyes twinkled with a juvenile youth.
Their faces were way too close for comfort. He tried to wriggle his way out of the uncomfortable situation but Wilfred's grip was very strong, he couldn't move.
James was about to protest about the sudden movements from the man and his grip on him. But Wilfred's finger was on his lips and immediately after that, light emitted from the high walls and shone where James had been.
Unlike the two other teams, this one was given the front most gate. The gate that face the entirety of Sanctauri, the gate that was no doubt used by the rich people when they did come around here.
So naturally, this gate had security the others didn't, include the light from above. Which flashed for a couple of seconds and turned off again, the flash wasn't dim but it wasn't too bright either, anybody in the city lit Sanctauri wouldn't notice it at all.
"Don't just walk around like you own the place, be careful, be caution at all times, at every turn a bullet can appear and if you're strutting it can be lodged right into your skull." Wilfred scolded the young man.
The thoughts of taking the lead died right there and then for him. He never sensed any atmosphere about Wilfred but in that moment, he believed him, he didn't say anything directly but he believed that the man had been through something like this, maybe many times.
He knew a bullet was always there at a corner in situations like these. It also dawned on him where they had been stationed, he seemed to remember back at the Waynworth Estate them saying this was the most heavily guarded.
'Just how much does mister Waynworth trust this butler? Just what, what is this I am feeling looking at his youthful eyes, why are they scary, who is he.' He didn't utter a word, he couldn't, he was completely tongue tied.
When the light turned to the other side, Wilfred's grip loosened.
"Don't be too scared, that'll make what you already know harder to even do. If you have problems killing, just leave them unconscious."
James wanted to ask whether he would kill the unconscious, defenseless guards. But he didn't have to, his face said it all, he intended to get rid of everything about this accursed mine.
So he in turn was inspired to get rid of the scum of their world, as he did at the underground ring. If he said he wasn't scared this time around, he would be lying to himself.
Wilfred thought he'd timed their sneaking within the walls guarding the place but he froze in his tracks having been met by a guard walking with two others patrolling.
Fortunately he was used to these kinds of pressure situations, his stupor broke first. A large knife slid from inside the arm of his suit.
"James?"
"Yeah?"
"Don't hold back, go crazy."
"What about noise?"
"Noise be damned."
A smile attempted to creep on James' lips as he took out two laser guns from either of his sides. They didn't make a lot of noise but they weren't completely silent. He aimed both of them to two of the guards and pulled both the triggers.
Wilfred was already of the third guard who was unfortunate enough to not be chosen by James' two guns.
As fast as the butler was to reach the guard, it wasn't fast enough as the young man in front of him took a gun, luckily it was the old gun he made two shots which Wilfred was able to dodge before reaching him and hitting him hard on the arms making drop the gun.
"Intru—" His scream died in his throat when Wilfred's knife dug deep into his insides, the blood quickly travelling to his throat and then his mouth.
He fell with a deafening thud, his yell coupled with the noise of the his gun and the guns James carried, was bound to attract attention. There were a few footsteps that could be heard that were running towards them.
"James, don't slack off yet. You should've already shot the oncoming guards."
"But they aren't in my line of fire yet." James was growing more annoyed with how critical Wilfred was. He couldn't believe just a minute ago he thought the man was just a senile old guy.
"That's a tired excuse!" He said taking out a gun and still holding the knife with his right hand.
He shot straight at the wall, James rolled his eyes with how pathetic his shot was. He absolutely had no right to tell him what to do and then something miraculous happened, the lazer bounced off the wall and changed its trajectory directly to the footsteps that were getting closer by the second.
It didn't take long before the footsteps completely ceased, the silence was accompanied by people grunting and falling.
James didn't want to believe it, everything he knew about everything was dismantled right at that second. He didn't know one could use a gun like that.
He took aim at the wall too.
"If you shoot, you'll blow your brains into bits." Wilfred warned.
