Chapter 414: Caught (1)
Tyrion and Edgar wasted no time returning to Quinn's home. They had all the evidence needed to send Quinn back to the palace dungeon.
Men were sent to escort Beryl and Harper to the palace to see Robert once he had been tended to. The other families were also to be informed of those who survived and those who were lost.
"Remember, we promised Rafael that Quinn would be taken to the court after he is placed on trial. I want to kill the bastard, too, but a promise is a promise. My father would allow you entry into the dungeon to torture Quinn," Tyrion promised Edgar.
Tyrion gazed at Edgar, who seemed more interested in the scenery. "Are you listening to me?"
"Unfortunately," Edgar replied. "I'll let Quinn be dealt with by your father and Rafael."
Tyrion's right brow raised. "You will not seek to punish him?"
"I've punished plenty of men in very few days. Quinn has a long list of men who want a moment alone to torture him. I'm more concerned about my family, as should you be. I only care now that he gets placed in the dungeon," said Edgar.
Once Quinn was safely taken to the palace dungeon and chained so he could not harm himself, that would be the end for Edgar.
"I'm sure plenty of people are going to be surprised you are letting this go so easily," Tyrion said.
"I'm getting older as the days pass. I've dealt with many enemies during my life. A new king is about to take the throne, so I don't need to bother myself with your father or the palace. I want to settle with my wife and not be pulled into cases," Edgar said, yearning for peace.
"Know when it is time to stop fighting," Edgar advised Tyrion.
"I only fight when it concerns my family and the people of this kingdom. Nothing will ever change the fact that I am a prince. With Quinn dealt with, I hope that my time with Penelope will not be disturbed. It hardly lasted a day," Tyrion said, still annoyed.
"Take her where she will be at ease. You both deserve a moment alone."
Tyrion wanted to touch Edgar's forehead to check if he was ill, but knew not to unless he wanted to lose his hand.
"Are you well, Edgar?" Tyrion asked, inching away from Edgar.
"I will make you get out of this carriage and walk if you bother me," Edgar warned Tyrion. "This is why I ask her not to trouble me to speak with you."
"How opposite. I think it would benefit us both if we claim to have spoken to ease Penelope's mind. She wishes for us to bond, but we've done quite enough of it. My days of trying to tease you will end here," Tyrion said, having had enough. "I'll tease your daughter instead."
"What? No warnings?" Tyrion asked, expecting Edgar to stop him.
"She picked you," Edgar answered. "You're her headache."
"I pride myself on being her headache. You'll be pleased to know that our forever home will officially be near the home you share with the duchess, out of town. We'll be close, aside from the times we will be here in Lockwood and travelling," said Tyrion.
"Pleased? Why would I be pleased?" Edgar asked, feigning ignorance. "I am thrilled to get back to the days when it is just Alessandra and me."
"Lily hasn't wed yet, and Isabelle is not of age," Tyrion reminded Edgar.
"Take them both with you," Edgar suggested.
Tyrion chuckled. "How cruel of you to ask me to take them. I want to be alone with my wife as well. There is nothing my parents could offer me to take Hailey into my home for the next few weeks. You must hold on until Isabelle is of age to marry or keep her with Elijah."
Tyrion opened the carriage door after it stopped before Quinn's home. "Did the duchess convince you to have so many children with so many years apart?"
Edgar stayed quiet as he exited the carriage. It was he who wanted many children and begged for twins.
Tyrion entered the home and was soon greeted by Mark.
"I'm surprised you stayed behind, Mark. We found the missing people, and some are alive to speak of what Quinn did. Prepare the palace and town guards to escort him to the palace dungeon. He's to go on trial," Tyrion said as he walked toward Mark.
Tyrion stood still when he reached Mark and asked, "What is it that has you silent? Don't let it be that you lost him."
"We haven't lost Quinn, but he did try to harm himself. He tried to reach for one of the weapons belonging to the guards watching him, but they pinned him down in time. Just before you arrived, we were preparing to take him to the palace. He's tied up," Mark said, tired from all that ensued.
"Weren't the guards instructed to limit the weapons they take inside the room with Quinn? They were only to have a dagger, no guns. They weren't to get too close to him unless needed. You're all disappointing me," Tyrion said, most disappointed with Mark.
Mark wasn't living up to all that Tyrion heard about him.
"I wasn't present when it occurred, but I will take the blame. Was anyone injured during the attack on your estate? I've sent the town guards over to aid you," said Mark.
"I don't need anyone to aid me," Edgar said, brushing past Mark.
"It is a formality extended to a duke. Just this once, I am not going to pry into how your guards dealt with the intruders. This is the second time you have helped the court, so I owe you," Mark said, grateful for Edgar once more.
Mark could never deny that Edgar was needed to keep the town safe. Edgar's methods were extreme, but they worked.
"This will be the last time I help you with a case. You can't afford me anymore, and I am tired of doing all of your work. Bring him down for us to take him to the palace," Edgar said, already bored with his work. He thought of Alessandra.
"Afford you? I wasn't aware that we were paying you," Mark said, turning to Tyrion for answers.
"Surely you did not think you could take the duke away from his duties and not reward him. Whatever he seeks will be worth it since he cracked the case," Tyrion said in support of Edgar.
"I see. And what will you seek?" Mark asked, knowing Tyrion helped just as much.
"Nothing. Only a petty man would seek money now," Tyrion answered.
