The Doppelgänger Mikaelson

Chapter 68: The Guardians 2

Elena trudged up the driveway of the Salvatore house, her face pale and her eyes still red from tears. She had just come from burying Bonnie, and the weight of the loss pressed heavily on her chest. As she neared the porch, she spotted Stefan standing by the doorway. What made her pause was the figure next to him—Katherine.

Katherine.

Elena's frown deepened as she picked up her pace. "Stefan," she called out, her voice sharp as she approached them. "What are you doing with her?"

Stefan glanced at her, an amused smile tugging at his lips. "Just catching up with an old flame. Is that a problem?"

Elena stared at him, her disbelief quickly morphing into anger. "After everything she's done? After everything she's put all of us through? You still have it in you to talk to her like it's nothing?"

Before Stefan could respond, Katherine let out a soft laugh. "Calm down, little sis," she said, a teasing edge in her voice. "I'm not the enemy here. In fact, you could say I brought the cavalry."

Elena opened her mouth to snap back, but her words died as the air suddenly shifted. A low hum filled the atmosphere, growing louder with each passing second.

Before she could process it, several rays of bright light descended from the sky, landing right in front of the Salvatore boarding house. The intensity of the light made Elena shield her eyes with her arm.

From one of the rays, a figure emerged—a woman, tall and regal, her presence commanding. Elizabeth Gilbert, but not as Elena remembered her. Dressed in armor that seemed to glow faintly with power, her hair flowing in waves like it had a life of its own, Elizabeth stepped forward.

"Elena," she said, her voice steady but warmer than Elena expected.

Elena's jaw dropped. "Mom?" she whispered, unable to believe what she was seeing.

Elizabeth didn't respond immediately. Instead, she turned slightly as more figures emerged from the remaining rays of light. One by one, they appeared—Mylea, Idola, Ryannen, and Susurre. Each of them radiated power, their very presence unsettling but awe-inspiring.

Elena looked back at Katherine, who was watching the scene unfold with a smug expression.

"See?" Katherine said, giving Elena a pointed look. "Cavalry."

Elena stood frozen, staring at her mother like she had just seen a ghost. Her heart raced, her chest tightening as her mind tried to process what was happening. She had buried her mother years ago—this couldn't be real.

"Mom?" Elena's voice cracked as tears welled up in her eyes.

Elizabeth stepped forward, her expression softening as she took in the sight of her daughter. "It's me, Elena," she said gently, her voice filled with both relief and sorrow.

Elena didn't move at first, her body stiff with disbelief. But then, like a dam breaking, she rushed forward, throwing her arms around her mother. "I thought you were dead," she whispered, her voice shaking. "I thought I lost you forever."

Elizabeth wrapped her arms around Elena, holding her tightly. "I know, sweetheart. I'm so sorry. I never wanted to leave you like that. But I had no choice. It was the only way to keep you safe."

Elena pulled back slightly, her hands still gripping her mother's arms. "Safe? From what? From who? None of this makes sense!"

Elizabeth sighed, brushing a strand of hair from Elena's face. "There's so much you don't know, so much I couldn't tell you before. But you deserve the truth now. All of it."

Elena frowned, her emotions a mix of confusion and hurt. "The truth about what?"

Elizabeth hesitated for a moment, glancing at Katherine, who stood a few steps away with her arms crossed, watching the reunion with an unreadable expression.

"The truth about your family," Elizabeth said, her tone careful. She placed a hand on Elena's cheek, her gaze steady. "Elena, Katherine isn't just someone from your past. She's your sister."

Elena blinked, pulling away from her mother as the words hit her like a freight train. "What?" she whispered, shaking her head. "No. No, that's not possible."

Katherine smirked, clearly enjoying the moment. "I told you we had more in common than you thought," she said casually.

Elizabeth shot Katherine a look before turning back to Elena. "I know it's hard to believe, but it's the truth. Katherine is your half-sister. I gave birth to her centuries ago. I thought she was lost to me forever… just like you."

Elena stumbled back a step, her hands trembling. "You're telling me she's my sister? After everything she's done to me? To all of us?"

"I understand how you feel," Elizabeth said softly. "But Katherine has her own story, her own pain. None of this is simple, Elena. And there's more at stake than you realize."

Elena's mind raced, the weight of the revelation crashing down on her. She looked from her mother to Katherine, who for once seemed to drop her smug attitude, her expression softening—just a little.

"I didn't ask for this either," Katherine said quietly, her voice lacking its usual bite. "But it's the truth. Whether you like it or not."

Elena's breath hitched, her chest rising and falling as she tried to keep her emotions in check. She turned back to her mother, her voice breaking. "Why now? Why tell me this now?"

Elizabeth placed a comforting hand on Elena's shoulder. "Because you deserve to know the truth. And because we need to stand together now, more than ever."

Before Elena could respond, one of the other Guardians, Mylea, stepped forward, her voice calm but commanding. "We don't have much time. The Originals won't wait, and neither should we."

Elizabeth nodded, her gaze steady as she looked at her daughter. "Elena, I need you to trust me. I'll explain everything, I promise. But right now, we have to prepare. This fight… it's bigger than all of us."

Elena swallowed hard, her mind still spinning, but the determination in her mother's eyes was impossible to ignore. Despite everything, she felt a spark of hope—hope that maybe, just maybe, they could survive what was coming.
