Chapter 2: Impressed
Yoda nodded at Rambo, who was waiting for them, as he hurled the man inside the mechanic garage. Although it was his abode, his place of work, Maril had usurped a part of it where she did her secretive dealings. At first, Yoda had protested strongly against it. It was his place of worship, where he handled the cars.
But Maril being Maril had ignored all his protests and, eventually, he had no choice but to relent. He could only accept defeat and allow her to do as she pleased.
The man woke up with a start when he fell on his face. The pain made him see stars, and it took him a few minutes to gain hold of his senses. Blinking heavily, he turned around as he scanned the place in fear. His hands and feet were still tied while the blindfold had been removed the moment they took him inside the garage.
"Who are you?" He scuttled back as he noticed two unknown men standing before him. "Why did you kidnap me?"
"To teach you a lesson." Maril stepped from behind and stood ahead of the two men, showing her captive who the Boss was.
"Who are you?"
"Let's say I'm a monster. Any problem?" Maril questioned him as if she was talking about something insignificant.
The man's eyes widened, and he scurried some more while he wiggled his hands and legs in an attempt to free his limbs.
"There is no use trying so hard to break free. Try as you may, but you are restrained. Until one of us unties you, you'll continue to be so." Maril made his life easier by telling the truth, and the man was rendered speechless by her nonchalant yet domineering attitude.
"What do you want of me?" the man shouted suddenly, his apprehension getting the best of him. "Wait, are you guys here to take the money I owe Robin? I have told you I will pay in a week. There are a few more days left."
"Hold your horses, you idiot." Maril was in no mood to entertain the man anymore. His face was ugly, and she couldn't tolerate staring at him another second. She felt her eyes to have been stained after looking at the filthy creature. It was another matter if he was handsome or at least pleasant-looking. She could have endured him for a minute more. But anyone who dared to disrespect her Godfather was ugly in her eyes. So, nope.
Maril nodded at Yoda who immediately freed the man's limbs. And that was all it took for the man to jump to his feet and make a dash. But Maril was quicker than him, and she leaped forward and kicked his stomach, sending him tumbling to the ground. The man wailed in pain. But his misery didn't end at that.
Maril pulled his hair, ensuring to make it as agonizing as possible. "There are a few people you should never touch, let alone insult. Do you understand why you are being punished?"
Maril pulled his hair hard until he was kneeling when she didn't receive any response from him.
"I don't know," the man howled.
"Let me refresh your memory then." Maril smiled, her eyes flashing with malicious intent. "I wonder if you remember what happened at the Church Road intersection in the morning."
The man's eyes widened in realization, and he looked at the two men before him with startled eyes.
However, he didn't have a moment to breathe. Maril kicked him hard on his butt and the man fell face first.
"So you do remember!" Maril clapped her hands as if she was patting off the dust. "It makes things easier for me. I can't tolerate your disgusting face anymore. It makes me puke."
The man groaned in pain as he raised his eyes, his gaze now filled with fear. "What do you want?"
"You are nothing but a cockroach and I don't want to dirty my eyes all the more by killing you."
The man's face paled at her words, and he crawled away from her. She seemed to be a grim reaper who had come to collect his soul.
"But I can't let you go just like that either," Maril spoke as though she was talking about the weather, all the while maintaining a tranquil face.
Who knew such a petite woman could be this vengeful? He was scared of her more than the man he was working for or worked for until a few minutes ago. After tonight, he'd no longer be working for him.
That was the initial plan. But the woman before him and her minions had foiled all his dreams and the beautiful future that awaited him. He was supposed to deliver the folder to the man, get his money, and leave the country. A lavish life was waiting for him. But now... he didn't know what awaited him.
"How about I break your legs? I will not have to kill you and I can still avenge my Godfather," she propounded and the man's eyes rounded. His eyes dropped to his legs and he instantly kneeled to protect his precious legs.
"You....you... you are committing a crime. I'm going to call the police," the man shouted, looking for ways to escape from the place. He was just a janitor. Never had he faced such a situation before, and he didn't know how to escape from the deadly predicament.
"Well, go ahead. Call the police." Maril threw his phone at him, making sure to smack it hard until the screen guard cracked. "Let's see if they get here first or if we break your legs first."
"Please." The man was scared out of his wits and tears streamed down his face immediately. "Please let me go. I'll do anything you want me to."
"Oh, yeah?" Maril quirked a brow at him doubtfully.
"Yes, yes. Just give me the orders." The man nodded, his eyes lighting up with hope. If he could save himself, he was willing to do anything.
"Then, why don't you break your legs yourself?" Maril suggested calmly. "Anyway, you're not leaving this place with your legs intact."
Unknown to her, the man eavesdropping on her through the listening bug let out a chuckle in amusement.
'Interesting,' he thought, his curiosity now ignited. He wanted to meet the woman who could talk about killing people and breaking people's legs without a pause or a change in her tone. She was bold, confident, and commanding, and he couldn't help but be intrigued by her.
Luca had no idea what made his Boss laugh. They had been waiting outside the place that seemed like a garage when his Boss started laughing all of a sudden. It was not the laugh he was familiar with. It didn't creep the hell out of him like it usually did when his Boss laughed in anger or when he was about to send someone to hell. Instead, the laughter was filled with warmth.
'Warmth? Is that even possible? What is happening today? Someone tell me I'm not dreaming,' Luca screamed in his mind as he glanced at the man behind him. Although he was desperate to find out what was happening, he didn't dare break the silence. After all, there seemed to be something that had caught his Boss' attention, and being a person who loved his life more than anything, he knew when not to cross his limits.
"You..." The man had no words to speak, and a chill ran down his spine. His lips parted and the gears in his mind started to turn faster than the wheels of a train. "How about this? I have a file..."
The man in the back seat raised a brow as soon as the document was mentioned.
"I need to deliver it to someone. You can do it on my behalf. You'll get a hundred thousand dollars after the file is delivered." To prove his point, he even pulled out the document from the inner pocket of his jacket and opened a message on his phone that contained the address where he was supposed to meet the man to hand over the file.
"Oh, my, my!" Maril was now intrigued. She snatched the document and the phone but didn't look at them.
"Why do you have such a file and why does it say Rossi Industries?"
Maril was engrossed in her thoughts to notice the change in expressions in the men behind her. She stared at the file in her hand while tapping her finger on it pensively. "Don't tell me you stole this file from the company you work for. You are a janitor. There's no way you'd have access to this file."
The man remained silent and Maril almost pulled her gun to end his life. She loathed traitors the most and the man seemed to have done what she resented the most.
"Do you know what kind of people I detest?" Maril questioned all of a sudden, confusing not just the man before him but the man listening to her in his car as well.
"I hate traitors the most, especially when you betray your employer by leaking their company secrets. You people have no moral grounds. He pays you and yet, you betray him." Maril's blood was boiling, and she didn't hesitate to unleash her anger on him.
With quick footsteps, she kicked his face, making him fall on his back. Everything happened in a flash. One moment, he was staring at her and the next instant, he felt an insurmountable pain in his knee followed by an audible crack.
"You are very fortunate today," Maril spoke and gave him a not-so-sympathetic look. "I'll not be breaking your legs alone. Say goodbye to your hands as well."
"No!" the man screamed, forgetting the pain in his leg for a moment. But all he got in return was the woman's disregard. "He is all yours. Break his limbs, ribs, anything you want but keep him alive."
Maril walked back, and it was Rambo's and Yoda's turn. True to his name, Rambo's punches and kicks were strong and impactful, and with just a few powerful strikes, he had managed to break the man's hands and some of his ribs.
Meanwhile, Yoda took his sweet time to break his other leg and by the time they were done torturing him, the man was bleeding everywhere. He was unconscious and barely breathing, and that was enough for them.
"Throw him near a landfill. He is nothing but garbage," Maril spat in disgust.
"What are you going to do about the file?" Rambo glanced at the hot potato that had now fallen into their hands. If they didn't get rid of it immediately, who knew what kind of trouble they would fall into? Rossi Industries... they were not someone they could afford to offend.
"I will return this to who it belongs," Maril declared as she glanced at the file in her hands solemnly.
"You mean..."
"Yes." She sighed and pressed her forehead, feeling frustrated all of a sudden.
"Aren't you going to take a look at the content?"
Yoda was curious to find out what exactly the file contained and why the man was willing to steal it. A hundred dollars was not a small amount. Anyone who could afford to pay such a huge amount to steal a file wouldn't be simple either. It only meant the file contained something crucial and most probably, mind-blowing.
"No. It contains confidential information, and we have no right to look at it."
Maril's words highly impressed the man in the car and his lips arched up. It was easy to find people like the janitor. All they needed was to exploit the person's weakness. However, it was highly difficult, nearly impossible to find someone like the lady he was listening to. Her honesty stirred something in him, and he now wanted to meet her.
"Will you be going now?" Rambo wasn't sure. But he didn't stop her.
"Yes. There is no better time than now. You guys go ahead and dump him while I return this file as quickly as possible."
"Let's go." The man in the car ordered. They were done with their work here. "Who knew that we would discover something so brilliant today?" he remarked while Luca looked at him in confusion.
"Don?"
"Nothing. Back to the company. We have to welcome someone tonight."
"Who, Don?" Luca's ears quirked up instantly and he turned around. His gossip radar became active at once.
His curiosity put him in trouble. His soul almost left his body when his Boss gave him a look that said people who spoke more than necessary wouldn't know how they died.
Gulping softly, he grinned to hide his fright as he started the car. "Yes, Don."
Although he had a lot of questions to ask, he swallowed all of them. He had an inkling that he wouldn't be getting any answers. Getting answers wasn't important anyway, keeping himself alive was.
