Chapter 13: Daisy shorts are trending
The streets of maple field, was still. The atmosphere was tense and the weather was dense.
Many trembled in fear and anticipation. What was going to happen? They whispered in hushed tones. But, four brave and gallant girls stood at the front of the battle field, ready to conquer the enemy.
"Are you ready girls?" Their leader said.
"Yes!" They affirmed in unison. They were ready to conquer.
"Get out of the road you fools!"
The girls, turned back to look at the car driver that honked continuously.
When the man saw that they weren't responding, he held unto the steering wheel and accelerated towards them, he was ready to clear them off the road by all means.
This snapped them out of their imaginary world and they screamed and ran across the street.
The car swerved to the left, nearly hitting a tree. He took another risky turn to the right before he drove past them. But not before cussing at them.
"You realize we nearly died right?" Erica said, breaking the silence.
The girls looked at each other and burst into fits of laughter.
After they had calmed down, Alice snapped her fingers and looked at them.
"Okay ladies, enough of the little talks. Let's hurry before the audition starts."
The girls hurried towards the audition building, but stopped when they saw the crowd outside.
"The whole city is here" Alice said sarcastically.
"I don't think it's for the audition we're here for though" Veronica said as she tapped her boots on the ground
Erica's eyes widened in surprise and she looked back and forth from Veronica to the crowd standing in front of the building. "So you're telling me that they're two auditions going on here? This is exciting."
"Yes, very." Alice chipped in although she sounded anything but excited.
"I have a suggestion guys, why don't we turn back and go home?" Laura said slowly.
Alice smiled genuinely at the suggestion. "I'm liking that idea."
Erica rolled her eyes in slight annoyance. "Very funny guys. We've come this far, we might as well go through it."
A short red nosed man, walked up to the them in the middle of their conversation, holding a file in his hand. "Can I help you ladies?" He grunted
Veronica, smiled when she saw him and stepped forward. "Well, I don't know if you remember me, but I'm the girl that came the other day to sign up?"
The man looked her up and down, and shook his head slowly. "Your face doesn't ring a bell, probably because it's generic." He scratched his beards as he spoke.
Veronica, squeezed her hands, resisting the urge to punch him in the face while the girls, giggled.
"Well, I was wearing shades that day, and a skirt?"
"Still can't remember." He said.
"I submitted four entries to you?"
"Still doesn't ring a bell girl. If you want me to remember, you have to tell me something more, solid."
"Oh for heavens sake, I was the girl that fell down the stairs!" Veronica said in annoyance.
"Ronnie, you fell from stairs?" Laura said. "You didn't tell us."
The man's eyes, widened in acknowledgement and he laughed aloud. "I remember you, you're the girl that fell and your daisy shorts showed. Please do come in" He laughed as he walked towards the opposite direction, beckoning on them to follow him.
"He's such a pervert" Alice said as she looked at the Veronica's red beet face.
Laura, placed her hands on Veronica's shoulder and smiled sweetly at her. "I'm sure your shorts looked cute though"
Veronica pushed her aside and flipped her hair. "I'm going to get my revenge on every god-damned person that saw my shorts."
"But you realize we're trying to get into the play or whatever? I don't think revenge is the best bet" Erica's voice of reasoning echoed through Veronica's vengeful thirst.
"Well, what better way to get revenge than to pass the audition and become the star?" Alice placed her hands on Veronica's shoulder and smiled "we're rooting for you Ron"
Well, it wasn't as though Alice was lying. She was indeed rooting for Veronica but on the bright side, it simply meant that she didn't have to do much work since Ronnie was going to be the star of the show.
"Let's go and conquer."
The girls, walked towards the direction the man had come from, determined to make Ronnie become the star and show everyone that daisy shorts, were the new trend.

"Number 7, you didn't make the cut, better luck next time."
Ronnie's eyes, widened in shock as she heard her number called.
"I didn't make it? You've got to be kidding me."
Erica, grabbed Veronica's hands and dragged her from the stage before she could make any scene.
"Let's go Ronnie, you tried your best".
The director, looked at them and rolled her eyes. "You absolutely lack skills and taste, someone as horrible as you should never dream of becoming a star. Maybe a mime would suit you best since you won't be heard"
"Excuse you?"
The director rolled her eyes and stared at Veronica. "I don't believe you're deaf, or am I wrong?"
Erica, stepped in front of Veronica, blocking her view. "I get the fact that she didn't make the cut but there's absolutely no reason for you to be rude about it."
"Rude? That's only something losers whine about"
Erica turned to Veronica and grabbed her hand. "let's go Ronnie, it's not worth it."
Veronica, glanced at Erica's hands which gripped into hers and she felt like tearing them away. She was beyond frustrated. Hadn't she tried her best? She'd acted her role as best as she could, she danced as hard as she could. So why then did she fail? Why did she have to keep failing at everything? She shut her eyes, trying to block out all the noise.
Erica, squeezed Veronica's hands, causing her to snap out of her thoughts. Ronnie, looked at the warm eyes of Erica and she felt reassurance, as though everything was alright.
Veronica beamed, she knew what she was to do. So, she removed one of her boots and threw it at the director. "I hope you burn in hell you bitch"
The boot flew, and landed beside the director. "You fool, what if it had hit me? I'd have sued you for assault. Thank the stars that I'm in a good mood today. Do yourself a favor and get out of here before I call the security"
Laura, bit her lips, trying to rest the urge to cuss. "At least, she won't have to see that ugly makeup of yours."
"She? What are you talking about? Surely you don't think the rest of you made the cut?" The director, threw her head back and laughed and the rest of the crew, joined her. "You all failed woefully, I was disgusted watching you talentless lot. It's an eyesore. I'd have to use eye drops when I get home."
"I pray a bus will hit you on your way home." Laura yelled as she helped Erica pull Veronica away.
Alice, stood in a corner, watching the interaction between the director and her friends and she began to wonder if she should leave quietly with her friends or set the building on fire. She looked outside the window at the side of the room and frowned when she realized everywhere was still bright. She'd be arrested for arson the minute she made the attempt.
"Oh well, I guess I just have to be logical." Alice muttered.
She walked towards her friends and grimaced at the scene they were making.
"You're all acting absolutely disgusting, I'm genuinely embarrassed."
At her words, they all stopped fighting and struggling. Laura and Erica released Veronica.
"I get the fact we didn't get in, but I don't understand why you're acting shameless. It's not worth it."
Veronica, looked down and was slightly embarrassed at the fact that she could not take a little failure.
"Let's go." Alice said to her friends.
They all turned to leave when the director stopped them.
"Wait" she called out.
The girls stopped and turned towards her.
"The girl that just spoke, number eight."
"Yes?" Alice said impatiently
"You acted only briefly but I loved your performance. I was absolutely enthralled by both your beauty and expression. I'd like you to be the star." The director stretched out her hands and smiled brightly at her.
Alice looked at her outstretched hands and then looked at the faces of her friends. They looked dejected and confused as to whether they should support her or be selfish and tell her not to accept the offer.
Losers, Alice thought, they were all losers. Did they really expect her to take it? Did they see her as selfish?
She was beyond pissed, at that fact and she had every urge, to prove them right and accept the offer.
Alice, looked back at the director and smiled sweetly. "No thank you."
"What?!" The director said in shock. "Why would you miss this golden opportunity."
"Well I have many reasons but the fact that only twelve people turned up for the audition and you picked me, an absolute stranger with no connection, says a lot. I'm not interested in featuring in some low budget shit that will absolutely get no views"
"You-"
Alice raised her hand and cut her off "Come to think of it, another audition is ongoing and there's a whole crowd outside, yet you have no one coming here. It's quite embarrassing."
Alice turned away and walked towards the door. "Toodles, I hope your play fails absolutely, the way your boob job did."
The director released a shrill scream as Alice made emphasis to her breasts that she had spent quite a lot of money on.
Alice sighed when she got outside the building and looked at her friend's that walked slowly behind her.
"Well that was disappointing." Alice said.
"Absolutely, but on the bright side, we won't have a hectic schedule." Erica chipped in, trying to ease the tension.
Laura placed her hands around Veronica and smiled. "cheer up princess, I'm definitely sure you'll have lots of chances to showcase your acting skills and bedazzle every single soul you meet."
Veronica nodded slowly and looked up. "sorry about crushing our hopes guys, especially you Alice since you got in."
Alice shrugged and yawned. "Well, it wasn't like I wanted to do it initially. Besides, I meant what I said. I have no desire to waste my efforts on something bound to fail."
"Guys are you forgetting something?" Erica said. She stepped back and beamed "we still have our school's audition. I'm definitely sure we've gathered some experience from this and we'll be able to get in."
Laura nodded at her statement, she was absolutely right. "as the saying goes, the third time, is the charm."
"Except this isn't the third time."
"So we have to fail one more time to make it a third failure?"
"Oh shut it Erica"
"You dirty bitch, I'll fuc.. "
Alice smiled as she looked at her friends bickering. She was initially scared that the whole experience would make them really upset but it seemed she was worried for nothing. She should know better that no matter what, they bounced back.
She looked forward, with slight hope, not because she was excited to enter the school's play but rather, she felt that an adventure was just beginning and something exciting, was waiting for all of them.
"Carpe diem. Seize the day, live in the present." She whispered amidst the peaceful noise.

The sound of a plane landing, caused an excited stir from families, waiting for the arrival of there loved ones.
From a distance, a tall slender male, having long dark hair, wearing a long jacket and his eyes protected by shades, exited the airport doors, dragging his luggage behind him.
He stopped walking when he approached a black jeep with a middle aged man and woman, waiting in front of the car.
When the woman saw him, she clapped her hands in excitement and ran towards him, throwing her hands around his neck.
He stumbled back and dropped his suitcase so he could catch. "Hello mother " he said.
"My son, I've missed you so much" She left his embrace and began kissing him around his face.
"Katy, don't make him uncomfortable." The man said as he approached them.
The woman, rolled her eyes but stepped back playfully.
"Hello father." He said with a glint in his eyes
"Hello Eric."
