Chapter 63: Talk with hex master
Xane felt a hand on his left cheek.
At first, he tried to ignore it, but then he heard that familiar sweet voice next to his ear. "Waki waki, come on, get up."
Xane instantly snapped open his eyes as he saw the woman in a white robe sitting just next to him.
He looked at her face in confusion, but then the vision from the moment Zayn passed out flashed through his eyes.
He remembered the pain he had just gone through. It was like someone pouring hot liquid all over blood veins.
Just then, he saw her hand moving toward him, which he instantly avoided as he sat up.
He heard Zayn's shaken voice in his head. [Xane, check for marks.]
Xane wasted no time and pulled aside the loose robe around his stomach.
The very first thing he noticed was these thick white lines drawn all over his body.
It looked like someone had done some voodoo magic on him.
Not only that, but he found himself back in a similar malnourished condition.
It was so bad he could see gaps between his ribs, while his nonexistent stomach sank and was full of these weird wrinkles because of loose skin.
After looking at his current condition, the new nail marks became the least of his concerns.
The hex master beside him seemed to realize his concern as she said, "Don't worry, it only happened because I had to use all the life energy stored inside your body to heal that wound."
As she mentioned the wound, Xane rubbed his chest.
Just like the very first day, all that was left of that wound was this small coin-sized scar.
He didn't even find a burn mark or anything.
Xane took a deep breath and even held his breath for a moment, but he felt no discomfort at all.
Even moved his hand and shifted around a bit, but there was still no discomfort at all.
He said to Zayn, fully impressed. <Zayn, we have to learn some of these healing hex arts. They are really on another level.>
Before Zayn could respond, the hex master clicked her tongue. "Don't worry. Once you have sufficient life energy, all the leftover wounds will close on their own."
Xane raised his eyebrow as he wanted to ask what this life energy was.
But then turned to her and nodded his head as he realized it was not the time for that.
Now that he had settled down, the first thing he noticed was that she was in a different green dress.
'So a day has already passed.' He also noticed she had this notebook in her hand. From time to time, she just looked at him and then wrote something in the notebook.
She noticed his gaze and stopped writing. She looked up directly into his eyes and said with a sweet smile on her face, "Nice to meet you, Viyron Zenaris. I am Hex Master Plena."
Xane stared at her with wide eyes as he sat up straight.
From his little experience, he knew just how insignificant his life was in front of a hex master.
For her to call him by his name, Xane knew this was serious. It was clear that Madness Mode had left a deep impression on her.
After all, before any of that, she was treating him more like a specimen to teach her students.
He asked Zayn just to confirm. <Did she already know about our potential?>
Zayn wasted not even a second and said, full of confidence. [No, that is impossible. She might have some other theory in her head.]
Xane was a bit taken aback when he heard such conviction in Zayn's voice.
Before, Zayn always panicked and stuttered, but then he realized this was not an unexpected situation.
Zayn must have already thought about such a response from her.
He really liked this version of Zayn. Not wasting any time, he just bowed to her. "Thank you for treating me, Hex Master."
It was a bit awkward to bow while sitting, but Hex Master Plena did not seem to be fixated on that.
She waved her hand. "No need to be so emotional about that. I treated you because of the resources."
Xane gulped down and asked in a tense tone. "Resources! So how much do I have to pay?"
She shook her head. "Oh, don't worry, the academy has already received payment from the Paarkis family."
Xane tilted his head. "Paarkis family? Not Zenaris."
Zayn said in an uncertain tone. [What's the Paarkis family doing here?]
<You know them?>
[Nah, not the family. But one heroine is from the Paarkis family.]
<Heroine? Don't tell me she is also in our class.>
[Nah, she is a year ahead of Liam.]
<Wai,t what? Why would a senior do—>
Xane didn't get to say that as Plena just rolled her eyes.
She closed the notebook. "I don't know the full details. I just know the student who made the bulk payment for your recovery was from the Paarkis family."
Xane rubbed his chin as Zayn said to him. [I don't think she is the one involved here. It must be someone else from her family.]
Xane mentally sighed. With how big the families were in this world, even he thought there was a possibility it was someone else.
But another possibility came to his mind as that Auren guy's face flashed through his head.
Xane shook his head as there was no point in thinking about those things.
He looked at Plena and asked, "Hex master, can you tell me just how long I was lying here?"
She pointed two fingers at him. "Two weeks."
Xane stared at her with wide eyes as his mouth dropped down to the bed. "What!!"
Even Zayn shouted in his head. [What!!]
Hex master nodded. "Yeah, it's bad, but hey, it's better than just forever lying on the bed."
Xane took a deep breath and asked her. "Hex master, can I leave this place now?"
She opened her notebook and said, "Well, you can leave after answering a few of my questions."
Xane moved his hand through his hair. "Sure, hex master. Feel free to ask me any questions."
She nodded her head in enthusiasm. "Ok, first. What is the last thing you remember?"
Xane didn't have to think much as he said, "Hex master, that night all I saw was fire touching me right at the center of my chest. I did feel a slight burn, but then everything blanked out."
Xane saw her frantically writing down everything in her notebook.
"Ok, second question. When did you regain your senses?"
Zayn said to him in that moment. [Hey, tell her my experience of the empty void, just remove all the getting one with the void stuff.]
Xane mentally nodded as he was not sure if just saying he woke up just now would work or not.
He didn't want her to have more suspicions, so he started detailing all the events about how he found himself floating in space with nothing around there.
How he thought about his life, waiting for someone to come out of that space.
To make his story more believable, he added all these extra emotional imaginary scenes of how his life as a kid was in the Zenaris estate.
Stuff like his loving relationship with his mom and sister.
Then he faced discrimination from others in the family because of his curse mark, and so on.
He painted this entire picture of how he just kept thinking about his family again and again.
Hex master asked with interest. "Oh, then how did you get out of the dark space?"
Xane looked into her eyes and shook his head. "Hex master, I don't know. One moment I was trapped there, but the next I heard your voice. You were saying something about the brain and then—"
Plena coughed at that. "Cough! Don't worry about that. I was just examining your condition. Last question, what did you use to gain my attention?"
Xane looked down and mentally asked Zayn. <What do I say to her?>
Zayn, in a much more relaxed tone, said. [Just say it was your hex skill and pray she isn't the aggressive one.]
Xane was a bit confused by Zayn's logic here, but he didn't think much, so he decided to follow him.
He looked up at her and just said with a smile. "Hex master, that is my hex skill."
The moment he said that, every hair on his body stood up as he felt chills down his spine.
Even though she was still smiling before him, he saw her hand freeze mid-way.
She placed down the notebook and stared straight into his eyes, and asked again. "Say your reason again."
Xane saw her pupils start shining with a red flash. The pressure from her was now so strong that Xane started shaking.
He gripped his arms to control himself and repeated in a low tone. "Hex master, it's my hex skill."
A second later, all the pressure around him was gone as she frowned and mumbled to herself. "Wait, it is true."
Xane gulped down and took some deep breaths to calm himself. He realized that just lying to these hex masters was never an option.
He expected things to end now, but what came out of her mouth next almost fried his brain.
