Chapter 58: Chaos in the void
All six versions of him started screaming at each other.
The teen version begged the others. "Guys, this place is too scary. Somebody please call my parents."
The prisoner version shouted, "Shut up, you idiot. How could you show your weakness to others?"
The teen version just wept, "But I want to get out of this void."
This time, the living corpse version said in a hollow tone, "Hey, how about you die alongside me? Once you are dead, you won't have to cry."
The teen version protested, "No, I don't want to die."
The rebel version started laughing. "Hahaha, then how about you try to slaughter everyone?"
The tinkerer version shouted at the other four. "Why do you guys even hate this void? Don't you want to know what this void would do to us?"
The maniac version shouted at the tinkerer's version. "Shut up, you geek. There is no fun in the void."
The living corpse version started a speech about how dying was the truest form of fun.
The rebel version started listing different ways he was going to kill people.
The rebel and tinkerer joined together, the rebel focusing on who they could kill, while the tinkerer started pointing out different weak points in the human body.
The teen version just kept crying, while the maniac version just tried to escalate the situation further.
Xane heard all this madness as each version started screaming and shouting at each other.
He did not know what was going on, but it was getting out of hand. To control things, he shouted, "All of you shut up!"
To his surprise, all of them went quiet, but only for a few seconds. Then all of them started targeting him.
Xane listened in shock as they started talking about recent events. The teen version complained about why he did not follow Xelami.
The social version had him dead, while the rebel started talking about how they could take over the academy.
The maniac and nerd versions were both rambling about the stuff that interested them.
The interesting one, though, was the prison version, which shouted, "You were stupid. You let others target you because you were weak."
That hit him for a moment, but before he could process it, the others drowned him out.
He felt like all these voices were suffocating him. So, without even understanding why, he joined them and started screaming just like them.
Time continued to pass as they kept blaming each other. The rebel and prisoner ganged up on the teen version, while the nerd and maniac joined forces against him.
The suicidal version, however, remained neutral, continuing to scream at all of them.
It was a complete mess, and Xane didn't even know how much time had passed, but he started feeling sluggish.
Not long after, the other voices around him also began to slow down, and eventually everything went quiet.
By that point, Xane was so spent that he wasn't even in a condition to understand what was going on around him.
Then he just blacked out.
…
Not long after, he opened his eyes back in the void.
He had not fully stabilized when the six voices once again started arguing.
This time, they were arguing about who was right in the last round. These things retained memories just like him.
Not wanting to drown in the madness, Xane once again joined them.
He felt the only way out of this situation was by defeating the others in argument.
This continued cycle after cycle, with no progress whatsoever.
After a dozen cycles, Xane changed his strategy and joined the others in bullying the teen version.
He decided it was better to at least eliminate one of them first, and things started to work.
Unlike the others, the teen version started to black out very fast.
Though in cycle after cycle, the next to go blank was his original self, as the others then attacked him.
It was super creepy as he realized these voices could stay awake even without him.
But at least that was some progress.
This continued until the point where the teen version could only stay awake for one hour.
But that was the limit. Even when all the others gave their all, the teen would still survive for one hour.
At that moment, it hit him that without even knowing anything, these voices had dragged him into their madness.
This realization froze him, so he decided to back down.
In his 20th cycle, he stopped responding to the others and focused only on listening to them.
Just like before, he got that suffocating feeling, like their voices were drowning him, but this time, he did not stop them.
He forced himself to stay quiet.
Not only that, but he realized that while the six voices had distinct personalities but all of them were only talking about stuff that happened in this world.
None of them was concerned about things that had happened in the first life.
At first, he thought it was because they had lost all those memories, but he soon discarded that idea when he heard the teen crying, talking about how he wanted to be a hero.
Xane remembered that before all of this mess, before those people accused him, he had wanted to be just like his dad.
A hero who helped others in need, protected the weak, and threw the bad ones in jail.
He smiled at just how naïve he had been.
He suddenly wanted to talk to a past version of himself that came before the arrest. He wanted to relive that past version's fantasy.
How would that version of him react if he were told that in the future, he would live the exact opposite life?
As he thought of that, suddenly he heard the 7th voice coming from behind him.
"Ah, what's going on here?"
Everyone went quiet, then started bombarding the new guy with one question after another.
Xane listened in shock as the new version respectfully answered each one of them.
Unlike the others, this version never screamed at anyone.
It was so interesting to see the innocent 7th version and the suicidal version consoling each other.
While the 7th version talked about his dream, the suicidal version started talking about how dying was the fastest way to achieve that dream.
This calmed the others.
As only those two voices were talking with each other, Xane suddenly focused on the vast void around him.
It was only now that he realized that, except for the few voices around him, everything was empty.
He felt like an ant about to be swallowed by the void itself.
He didn't like that, so this time he started thinking about the version of himself just before his death, and sure enough, the 8th voice joined the others.
That was the start, as next he thought about his baby self, and the 9th version came out crying.
Suddenly, he wanted to see just how big this void was.
Could this void handle every moment of his life? To test that, he started thinking about different versions of himself.
He started to think about different life-changing incidents he had faced in his life. He summoned the before and after versions to see how those events changed him.
This whole thing led to a lot of surprises. He suddenly started to see that there were multiple small incidents that he never thing much of, but they did leave a big impact on him.
Like the version of him in prison before he met his parents, and after he met me, his parents had the most transformation.
It was interesting, as this stuff happened before he read all those books, so he never realized their true impact on him.
The more of these voices came, the more chaotic it became, as each one started shouting and crying at the others.
It was madness, but Xane preferred this familiar madness to the silence of the void.
It hit him that at the end of the day, all this madness was part of him. He wanted every inch of this void filled with his madness.
This started a vicious cycle of Xane thinking about more and more versions of himself. But after summoning the 5th version, he blacked out.
He opened his eyes again and immediately forced out another 5 versions before blanking again. The surrounding madness continued to increase, but he started to have fun with it.
After about 20 more cycles, the first six voices even joined him, and they, too, began producing versions only minutes apart from each other.
The void that once felt empty was now filled with noise all around him.
After summoning thousands of versions, all of them started to form rhythms, shouting in groups. There were different camps now, and every new voice was pulled into one of them, joining forces to scream at the others.
After about 5,000 versions, Xane started hearing loud echoes in the void. There were so many versions now that he started to hear delays in the voices.
He could only hear those standing farther away after a second, but in that second, another group had already started screaming. The delays caused the rhythms to blend together.
At about 10,000 versions and countless cycles later, he could only hear an unstoppable scream filling the void.
By this point, he had even rejoined them, all while creating additional versions.
