Chapter 48: The power of hex master
Soren floated back to the floor as Xenor rushed to him.
Zayn followed a couple of steps behind.
Xenor asked with a wide smile, "Haha, you succeeded on the very first try, congratulations, my student."
As Zayn heard that, he paused for a bit.
He looked at the frozen smoke and then at Xenor's back. It hit him that Xenor should have known he failed in his attempt, and still, he always asked how it went after both his attempts.
Xane also noticed the same and said. [So we're not the only ones acting.]
Zayn stared at Xenor's back and nodded his head.
It was clear that while he was acting as a good student, his mentor was also pretending to be an attentive teacher.
He just did not understand why his mentor was doing all this. What would he even want to achieve?
Zayn sighed and then focused back on Soren.
The blue film around him had already disappeared, but as Zayn moved closer to Soren, he froze in his step.
The hair all over his body stood up. It was like he was standing next to a gigantic beast.
A big ice beast, whose breath had frozen him into a thick ice slab.
It was to the point that Zayn even started to feel cold all over his body, and he saw both his hands starting to lose color.
This reminded him of the scene from class where Miss Luna experienced something similar.
At that moment, he saw Soren smirking at him as he proudly said, "Sir, I managed to form a link to a higher purity planet than my soul projection."
As Soren spoke, Zayn's face also started to lose color. He began to have a hard time breathing.
His breath caught halfway in his throat. The world shrank, his vision tunneling until all he saw was Soren's eyes.
It wasn't cold anymore; it was the kind of stillness like the entire world around him had frozen to death already.
Zayn knew all of this was just an illusion, but no matter how much he tried, he just could not pull himself out of it.
Unable to do anything, Zayn fell to the floor.
At that moment, Xenor noticed the situation and stepped between Soren and him.
The very next second, Zayn snapped out of the illusion.
Xane snapped in his mind. [What the hell, Zayn? Why the hell did you stop breathing?]
Zayn looked at his hands and realized in horror that they were pale due to lack of oxygen. He started taking deep breaths like a starved wanderer who saw water after days.
It took him a couple of minutes to recover, all while both Xenor and Soren stared at him.
At that moment, he got the feeling of being less than an ant before those two.
Zayn looked at Soren.
It was hard to believe it was the same skinny guy he had just met a few hours ago.
Though interestingly, Soren still bowed to him. "Ah, I am sorry."
Xenor waved his hand. "Viyron, don't blame Soren. It was just him being unable to control his hex energy. You might experience the same when you manage to form your own linked mark."
Xane said in his head. [Don't tell me you got trapped in some illusion.]
<I did, and it was icy one. I was slowly freezing to death.>
Xane focused on Soren. [Freezing to death. Is it like some passive power of the hex master?]
<I don't know, but I was completely helpless.> Zayn just waved to Xenor. "Don't worry, sir. I understand."
For some reason, Soren bowed to Xenor next. "Thank you for your guidance, sir."
At first, Zayn thought it was normal, but as he was still on the floor, he caught that Soren was just trying to hide the smirk on his face.
So it was intentional, and Soren was making sure he knew his true intentions.
Unaware of the silent exchange, Xenor burst out clapping. "Haha, as expected from my student. Come, follow me. We have to find what kind of creatures are present in your world."
Xenor turned to him and said with a smile. "My second student. I hope you get the result this time."
Zayn stared at Xenor as he was once again acting.
He just nodded along with his mentor. "I will try my best, sir."
With that, Xenor dragged Soren back to the platform as Zayn watched both of them move up, still sitting on the ground.
Xane cursed in his head. [That felt like shit.]
Zayn stared at the leftover ice around the circle and nodded. <No point comparing ourselves with others. Better focus on our situation.>
Xane mentally rolled his eyes. [You say that, but why are you clenching your fist?]
Zayn just got up and started walking toward the circle. <That was just motor reflex.>
Xane didn't push further as he knew their current situation was similar to someone standing at the edge of a cliff.
He could see that Xenor was slowly losing interest in teaching them, and Soren's situation was only going to make it worse.
If they didn't make progress soon, things would really go from bad to worse.
Xane sighed as he realized that while staying with Zayn, he had also started to think more like his body mate.
He stopped thinking about other stuff and said, [Hey Zayn, let's not rush. I don't want to get thrown out early, so it's better to rest more.]
Zayn didn't react much. He just placed the hex art to the side and lay on the ground with his eyes closed.
Normally, it would be hard to stop thinking about the near-death experience, but both of them had gone through much worse.
So it wasn't that big a deal for them.
After resting for a couple of hours, Zayn got up and checked the time on his ID.
It was about to be lunchtime, but he didn't care about food right now as he picked up the hex art. <Are you ready?>
[Yeah, let's go.]
Zayn wasted no time and ripped the hex art while thinking about status. Soon, the white smoke filled the circle, and he blacked out.
He opened his in the same dark work surrounded by a bunch of grey dots that he already knew were no use to him.
Just looking at those made him mad.
Not letting that affect him, he asked Xane, <So where were those grey dots that we didn't check. >
