Chapter 94: Change of plan
Three venerable elders hastened toward the sect leader's residence. They deliberated on the possible scenarios that might unfold. Following the binding directive from the Supreme Moon Sect, they were tasked with retrieving Fang Yuan and bringing him back to their sect. However, he was currently in the Eastern Lands, and they were unable to determine his exact location. Due to the Mist Sect's internal policies—and despite being regarded as esteemed guests and benefactors—they were unable to obtain the necessary information from the Hall of Missions elder.
The sect leader sat in his room, discussing the situation with the other elders. When the three venerable elders entered, he concluded the discussion and dismissed the others.
Upon entering, the three elders, their expressions marked with concern, inquired about the Mist Sect's situation.
"Honored Sect Leader, we hope we're not intruding, but there's a matter we need to consult with you about."
The sect leader regarded them, trying to guess their intent but feigned ignorance and said, "Venerable elders, please, let me know how I may assist you."
"As you're aware, we were planning to stay here for a while, and following our discussions, we decided to allow Lu Zheng to participate in the tournament. However, we've recently learned that he has embarked on a mission to the Eastern Lands, even though all disciples were summoned back to the sect."
The sect leader stroked his chin thoughtfully. "I was unaware of this, but we should be able to summon him back. He has a token that allows him to receive urgent orders from the Hall of Missions. There shouldn't be any cause for concern."
"If only it were that simple, we would've already handled it. Unfortunately, communication with that token has been lost. While we do have suspicions about the boy, we cannot allow him to lose his life needlessly without evidence."
"Yes, venerable elders, I understand your concerns. However, fate is far more intricate than we can control."
"Your words, Sect Leader, reflect the nature of destiny. Still, that doesn't mean we can abandon the boy. That's why we've come to request information about his mission in the Eastern Lands so we can ensure his safe return to the sect. We cannot let this incident stir greed within our own ranks."
The other two elders, who had remained silent thus far, echoed their companion's sentiments, emphasizing the matter's importance as followers of the righteous path.
The sect leader pondered briefly before responding. "Dear elders, while I have the utmost faith in your abilities and am confident you wouldn't be easily defeated, I'm also well-acquainted with the cunning nature of demonic sects. They always have devious tricks up their sleeves.
"For this reason, without a clear understanding of the situation, I cannot in good conscience place you in such peril. Please understand that this responsibility weighs heavily on me."
Though slightly disheartened, the three venerable elders understood the Sect Leader's reasoning. They were aware that demons never fought honorably and often employed terrifying methods or powerful artifacts.
But could they let this deter them?
Ultimately, the Sect Leader convinced them to wait a little longer. As they returned to their residence, the three elders decided to change their approach and locate Fang Yuan without the Mist Sect's assistance. They were powerful cultivators whose strength could not be ignored, especially when united, as they were practically invincible together.
When night fell, they stealthily infiltrated the Hall of Missions. The task was accomplished with relative ease, and after obtaining the necessary information, they returned to their residence without delay.
Leaving without explanation could tarnish the Supreme Moon Sect's reputation, so they visited the Sect Leader once more. He was seated in a secluded courtyard atop the mountain peak, a location they had never seen before—not even during their flights over the mountain.
The Sect Leader greeted them warmly.
"Welcome, venerable elders. Is there something you wish to discuss?"
One elder spoke with a calm tone. "Sect Leader, you have shown us immense kindness during our stay, and we are truly grateful. However, an urgent matter has arisen, and we must return to the Supreme Moon Sect immediately. Considering the ongoing events and the Mist Sect's autonomy, we must act swiftly to prevent any unfounded rumors from damaging the relationship between our sects. Please do not see this as disloyalty."
The Sect Leader smiled and poured tea for them.
"Honored elders, there's no need for such words! Our sects are allies and brothers. Of course, we stand together during hardships. That said, I understand your concerns and appreciate your goodwill. Please, do not trouble yourselves over such trivial matters. The Supreme Moon Sect has always been gracious to us, and for that, we are deeply grateful."
One of the elders stroked his beard and nodded. "Indeed, indeed. There's no need for such formalities between brothers."
Another elder added, "However, we must take our leave now. Hopefully, we can share tea again under better circumstances, Sect Leader."
The Sect Leader rose from his wooden chair to see them off. When he returned to the courtyard, he dispelled the illusion concealing the area with a single gesture. Elder Su and the Hall of Missions elder entered shortly after.
The Sect Leader asked, "Was everything carried out precisely?"
The Hall of Missions elder nodded. "Yes, they've taken the bait and will likely head to the Eastern Lands tonight."
The Sect Leader smirked. "Now, instruct the disciples we've summoned to prepare to defend the sect's heavenly treasure. At dawn, send several groups to the northern mountains to guard the region with concentrated spiritual energy zone."
The two elders replied in unison, "Understood, Sect Leader!"
