In the 1950's, the word "spam" referred only to a tinned luncheon meat produced by Hormel foods. The name is most likely is a contraction of "Spicy Ham," but the company will not confirm or deny that rumor. During WWII, Spam was such a ubiquitous feature in the diet of US troops around the world, that soldiers wrote letters to the company complaining about the product they sarcastically referred to as "ham that didn't pass the physical".

Over 150 million pounds of Spam were purchased by the military before the war's end. In the aftermath of WWII, countries faced with strict food rations came to appreciate Spam. Today in Gaum, each household consumes an average of 16 cans of spam per year, McDonald's features a Spam burger and the annual "Spam Games" competition highlights the best up and coming recipes featuring the canned meat. Speaking of recipes, in the M.A.S.H. TV show, Season 3, Episode 14, Radar O'Reilly rescues a lamb from being featured in the mess tent, and to cover up for him, Hawkeye creates a "Spam lamb". To date, over 8 billion cans have been produced since it was created in 1937. You might not want try it cold, gelatinous and dirty, as Corvan did in our story, but you might want to buy a can, and try out one of the many online recipes.
