The Coiled Dragon’s Legacy

Chapter 13: Chapter 13: The Narrow Escape

The faint glow of the cave's entrance cast an eerie light on the jagged walls. Li Feng and Mei Lian sat just beyond its reach, their breaths steadying after their frantic escape. The silence of the ravine was oppressive, broken only by the distant murmurs of the Scarlet Iron Sect soldiers above.

Mei Lian leaned against the cold rock, her dagger still in her hand. She glanced at Li Feng, who was staring down at the jade ring as if willing it to offer answers. "You're lucky that thing hasn't gotten us killed yet," she said, her tone sharper than she intended.

Li Feng looked up, his brow furrowing. "It's not like I asked for any of this."

"No," Mei Lian said with a bitter laugh. "But here we are anyway."

He didn't respond. Instead, he ran his thumb over the intricate carvings of the ring, feeling the faint hum of its energy. Every time he thought he understood it, it revealed another mystery. His thoughts were interrupted by the distant echo of a shout from above.

"They're still looking," Mei Lian muttered. She stood, her movements quick and precise as she scanned their surroundings. "We need to keep moving before they figure out we're down here."

Li Feng hesitated. "Where do we even go? They'll be waiting at every turn."

Mei Lian smirked, a flicker of amusement crossing her face. "You think they're the only ones who know these woods?" She nodded toward a narrow path that wound deeper into the ravine. "There's an old game trail down there. Hard to spot, even harder to follow. If we're lucky, it'll lead us to the other side of the ridge."

"And if we're not lucky?" he asked.

Her smirk widened. "Then we'll find out just how good we are at improvising."

Despite his unease, Li Feng followed as Mei Lian led the way. The trail was as treacherous as she had warned, the loose gravel slipping under their feet with every step. The walls of the ravine loomed high above them, their jagged edges casting long shadows that seemed to shift with every movement.

As they descended, the sound of rushing water grew louder. The trail opened up to reveal a narrow stream cutting through the base of the ravine. Mei Lian crouched by the edge, studying the water with a critical eye.

"We follow this," she said. "It'll cover our tracks and take us farther from their search grid."

Li Feng knelt beside her, dipping his fingers into the icy water. "How do you know all this?"

Mei Lian shrugged, her gaze distant. "When you spend your life running, you get good at finding places no one else thinks to look."

He didn't press further. The pain in her voice was subtle but unmistakable, and he knew better than to pry. Instead, he stood and followed her as she stepped into the stream, the cold water soaking their boots as they waded downstream.

They walked in silence for what felt like hours, the steady flow of the stream the only sound. Li Feng's thoughts drifted to the jade ring and the vision of the Azure Dragon. The weight of its message pressed on him like a stone, each step a reminder of the burden he carried.

"You're thinking too hard," Mei Lian said, breaking the silence.

Li Feng glanced at her, startled. "What?"

She smirked, though her eyes remained on the path ahead. "I can see it on your face. Whatever's going on in that head of yours, it's not helping."

"It's just... this ring," he admitted. "I don't know what it wants from me. And every time I think I'm starting to understand, something else happens to make it even more confusing."

Mei Lian stopped, turning to face him. "Let me give you some advice, Feng. Whatever that ring is, whatever it means, it's not going to hand you all the answers on a silver platter. You're going to have to figure it out the hard way."

"And if I fail?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

She held his gaze, her expression serious. "Then you get back up and try again. That's how you survive."

Before he could respond, a sharp sound echoed through the ravine. It was faint, but unmistakable—the clatter of rocks tumbling down the slope behind them.

Mei Lian's hand went to her dagger, her body tensing like a coiled spring. "We've got company," she said, her voice low.

Li Feng felt his heart race as he scanned the shadows. The sound grew louder, closer. A figure emerged from the darkness, clad in the crimson armor of the Scarlet Iron Sect. The soldier's eyes locked onto them, and he drew his sword with a cold, deliberate motion.

"Run," Mei Lian said, her voice calm but urgent. She stepped forward, placing herself between Li Feng and the soldier. "I'll handle this."

"I'm not leaving you!" he protested.

She shot him a glare. "You'll just get in the way. Go!"

Reluctantly, Li Feng turned and ran, his heart pounding as he followed the stream deeper into the ravine. Behind him, he heard the clash of steel and the shouts of battle, each sound a knife in his chest. But he forced himself to keep moving, the jade ring glowing faintly as if guiding his path.

The stream curved sharply, opening up into a wider basin surrounded by steep cliffs. Li Feng stopped, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he scanned the area. He was alone, the sound of the fight distant and fading.

As he leaned against a boulder, trying to calm his racing heart, the glow of the jade ring intensified. It pulsed with a steady rhythm, its energy coursing through him like a heartbeat. Li Feng closed his eyes, focusing on the sensation. The vision of the Azure Dragon flashed before him once more, its golden eyes filled with a silent command.

"Protect the legacy," the dragon's voice echoed in his mind. "And trust in the bond."

The vision faded as quickly as it had come, leaving Li Feng with more questions than answers. But one thing was clear: he couldn't afford to fail. Not now, not ever.

The sound of footsteps broke his thoughts, and he turned to see Mei Lian approaching, her dagger streaked with blood. She looked tired but unharmed, her expression unreadable.

"Are you okay?" he asked, relief flooding his voice.

She nodded, wiping the blade on her sleeve. "I'm fine. Let's keep moving before more of them show up."

Li Feng nodded, the weight of the ring pressing against his chest as they continued their journey. The path ahead was uncertain, but he knew one thing for sure: he wasn't alone in this fight.
