The chase For Blood

Chapter 6: Chapter six

The drive to the police station was heavy with silence. Eric kept sneaking glances at Evelyn from the corner of his eye. Her sleek ponytail framed her face perfectly, and despite himself, he couldn't help but notice how pretty she looked. Funny how you don't realize what you miss until it's gone, he thought.

When they arrived, Evelyn's eyes were immediately drawn to a commanding figure standing at the entrance. An older man with a stiff, dignified posture and a crisp uniform that screamed authority. Whether he was a captain, general, or something else, Evelyn didn't care—she just knew this was the man Eric always tried to impress.

"Ah, sir—dude—uh, sir!" Eric stammered, awkwardly straightening his stance. "Can I take on the serial killer case now?"

The general raised a skeptical eyebrow. "Do you have a victim?" he asked, his tone calm but critical.

Evelyn had to hold back an eye roll. Unbelievable. More than 20 women had died, and this man still thought it wasn't a serial killer. Suicide? Really? Could he be any more out of touch?

"Yes, Evelyn was attacked last night," Eric said, gesturing to her.

The general's sharp eyes shifted to Evelyn. "Your wife?"

Evelyn blinked. 'So, he hasn't told them we're divorced. Interesting.'

"Uh, yes," Eric replied quickly, avoiding her gaze.

The general nodded, turning back to Evelyn. "What happened, Mrs. Williams?"

Evelyn gritted her teeth at the name but recounted her story. The general listened intently before signaling for Eric to follow him. "Let's discuss this in my office," he said. Eric practically lit up with excitement, following like a loyal puppy.

Before leaving, Eric called out to a tall, striking Black officer. "Mary, keep an eye on her while I'm gone."

Mary smirked, raising an eyebrow at him. "Sure thing. And while you're at it, get me a promotion, will you?"

Evelyn couldn't help but let out a small gasp at the audacity, but Eric just smirked, clearly amused.

As soon as they disappeared, Evelyn pulled out her phone. Her stomach dropped when she saw 20 missed calls from her boss. This is bad. Really bad. She glanced around, her mind racing. That's when she spotted the bathroom sign. Perfect

"Uh, excuse me," Evelyn said to Mary, feigning urgency. "I really need to use the bathroom."

"Yeah, sure, whatever," Mary replied, already distracted by her paperwork

"Thanks," Evelyn said sweetly, rushing into the bathroom. Once inside, she scanned the room for an escape route. No windows big enough for her to crawl through. Figures.

Plan B: sneak out. It took some effort, but Evelyn managed to slip out of the station unnoticed. Once outside, she bolted to the street, flagging down a cab.

A yellow cab pulled up, driven by a middle-aged Indian man. She climbed in quickly, glancing over her shoulder. "Newsroom. 25 Avenue Street," she said, hurriedly.

Just as the cab started moving, she saw Eric sprinting toward them. He came to a halt, panting, and then—oh no. He held up her wallet, a triumphant smirk on his face.

"Good luck getting there without your wallet!" he called out, waving it teasingly.

Evelyn's jaw dropped. "That bastard stole my wallet!" she shouted.

The cab driver sighed, pulling over abruptly. "No money, no ride," he said flatly and Evelyn groans.

_______

Evelyn didn't waste a second—she bolted. Her feet pounded against the pavement as she weaved through the crowded market, dodging fruit stalls and startled vendors. Glancing over her shoulder, she saw Eric gaining on her, his longer strides quickly closing the gap. He's too fast, she thought.

Desperation fueled her next move. Spotting a teenager on a skateboard, Evelyn veered sharply toward him, snatching it mid-roll. "Sorry, kid! I'll give it back!" she shouted, hopping onto the board.

Now on the skateboard, she wobbled slightly, the wheels rattling beneath her, but she pushed forward with determination. The uneven pavement made for a bumpy ride, but Evelyn focused on maintaining her balance.

"Evelyn, stop running!" Eric shouted behind her, his voice strained but persistent.

She glanced back, her ponytail whipping in the wind. Eric was still chasing her, closing the gap despite her newfound wheels. Seriously, doesn't this guy ever quit?

Skating as fast as she could, Evelyn turned a sharp corner, only to find herself face-to-face with a tall, unscalable brick wall.

"Dammit!" she hissed, coming to a screeching halt. She spun around, and sure enough, Eric rounded the corner seconds later, blocking her only exit.

"You know," he said, panting heavily but smirking, "you could get arrested for making a cop run like this."

Evelyn glared at him, her chest heaving. She said nothing, her brain working on overdrive for a way out. There's only one way this ends.

With a determined gleam in her eye, she crouched low, gripping the skateboard tightly. Before Eric could process what she was about to do, Evelyn launched herself forward, using the skateboard like a springboard to perform an aerial cartwheel. She landed gracefully on the other side of him, her ponytail swinging as she skidded to a stop.

Eric froze, stunned. "Seriously?!" he yelled, spinning around just as Evelyn grabbed the skateboard and bolted again.

She kicked off, skating down the narrow alley with a grin.' Sorry, Eric. I've got a meeting to catch.'
