The chance of a Lifetime

Chapter 2: Chapter 2 - Aftermath

His memory after being shot was hazy at best. Flashing lights for a second and then bright lights the next. Many people with loud noises at one second and absolute silence the next.

When he woke up , he was dressed in pure whites and the next moment he realized that he was in the hospital. the smell of medicine was rife in the air.

His hoarse voice cutting the air like a knife. ".....wat..er?" But unfortunately there was no one in the room to hear him. Kai tried speaking again but his voice louder but he couldn't raise his eyelids let alone his voice. He tried moving his arms to call someone over but his arms felt like they were made of lead and refused to budge at all.

Fortunately before he forced himself anymore, a nurse came into the room, likely to check on him and seeing him try to move ran over to his side. "You're awake!" She exclaimed. She was a pretty nurse, Kai absentmindedly observed. In her late 20s with chocolate brown her past her shoulders, brown eyes and a heart shaped face, she could try to work in the entertainment industry if she wanted to.

"water" Kai groaned in a low tone. Nonetheless the nurse heard him and ran to get some water for him. A minute or so later she returned with a cup of water and he gulped it down like a man possessed.

"Where am I?" Kai inquired after getting his fill. "LA Medical Centre" confirmed the nurse. "You got shot while protecting an old man during a robbery according to the cops. You lost a lot of blood and we had to perform immediate surgery to remove the wound. If the doctors waited any longer, the bullet could have lodged in your spine and could have been fatal to you. Honestly with the amount of blood you lost, you're very lucky to be alive"

Kai laughed. Or at least tried to laugh. What came out was a dry cough and the nurse tried to help him but he held out his hand to stop her. "Lucky? How was I lucky? I can barely move my body and the bills from this hospital will kill me nonetheless." he lamented. Tears pooled around his eyes but he refused to let it out. He quickly closed his eyes and tried to control his breathing.

Laura did not say anything as there was nothing to be said. She felt sad for the boy as while he did not know the entire truth, she did and she did not have the courage to relay the news to him right now.

She decided to give him some space and quietly left the room. She had to call the doctor to inform that the patient was awake. She hoped that everything will be alright.
