Chapter 3: Chapter 3: An End in Depression
Anxiety was becoming more pronounced at the bottom of Shen Yi's heart.
The sudden ring of the cellphone, though not particularly loud, made Shen Yi's heart tremble fiercely as if something vanished from the depths of his soul in that instant.
Staring blankly at the still-ringing phone, Assistant Chen furrowed his brows and quietly called out, "Boss."
Shen Yi seemed as though his soul had been hooked out, leaving behind only an empty shell with no response whatsoever.
Assistant Chen had no choice but to cautiously tug at Shen Yi's arm.
Only then did Shen Yi snap back to reality with a bit of panic and hurriedly picked up the phone, "Hello."
A panicked sob came from the servant on the phone, "Sir, the, the, the madam, she's stopped breathing!"
Shen Yi couldn't even comprehend what the words meant, asking blankly, "What do you mean she's stopped breathing, what happened to her?"
"I heeded your words and kept watch upstairs, and past midnight, the madam hadn't gone to rest."
"When I went up to ask, the madam said, the madam mentioned she wanted to eat sweet rice wine dumplings... so, so I, I went downstairs to prepare it. By the time I returned, the madam, she was already..." The servant choked up, eventually crying too hard to speak any further.
Shen Yi's fingers gripped the phone so tightly as if he wanted to crush it completely.
Sitting right beside Shen Yi, Assistant Chen, although unable to hear the entire content of the call, could hear the crying from the phone and, combined with Shen Yi's absent state, also began to feel unease.
What in the world had happened?
The phone disconnected at some point, and later it rang several more times with calls from his parents and from Shen Wenzhou, none of which he answered.
In his heart, he kept telling himself it must be because he had been away on business for a whole week and hadn't been home, making Ye Wanwan angry and she was purposely making trouble.
It had to be that!
After the high-speed train arrived, Assistant Chen, holding a large umbrella, quickly followed Shen Yi, escorting him into the car that was already waiting at the station.
No sooner had Shen Yi sat down in the car than he ordered the driver to head back to the mansion.
In the wee hours, at around two o'clock in the morning, the streets were nearly empty. However, due to the torrential downpour, the driver couldn't go very fast. By the time they reached the mansion, it was precisely three o'clock.
At three in the morning, the lights at the Shen Family mansion in Bihai Bay were all ablaze. Shen Yi got out of the car and, not waiting for Assistant Chen to provide an umbrella, he dashed through the heavy rain toward the mansion.
At this moment, everyone inside the Shen Family mansion was distressed. Seeing Shen Yi enter, the servants, as if sighting the first light of dawn, excitedly called out, "Sir!"
Shen Yi didn't reply, but rather rushed upstairs to the bedroom.
When he reached the bedroom door, he found himself unable to walk in. He stood there, dripping wet, fists clenched tightly, several times trying to muster the courage to go inside and then hoping to find out that all of this was just Ye Wanwan throwing a tantrum.
No matter how much he tried to mentally brace himself, he couldn't take that step inside.
Sensing something, Shen Wenzhou, who was by the bedside, looked up in the direction of the door, and his gaze collided with Shen Yi's.
Shen Yi didn't want to believe it; he thought all of this was merely Ye Wanwan being petulant.
But when he saw his son's reddened eyes and the uncontrollable sorrow within them, Shen Yi's heart completely sank.
