The Calling of Wrath: A Medieval LitRPG Apocalypse

B2 | Chapter 45 - Differences in Perception

Year 820 | Month 5 | Day 18

I continue flying underneath the islands for a little while as the army of stone demons of all kinds chase after me. But something they very clearly didn’t consider when making this plan was my speed, considering how the army of thousands decreases to a mere army of two hundred within a few hours of the chase beginning. With nothing but the highest leveled demons of the bunch still chasing.

Then again, I wouldn’t be surprised if the others are still chasing. Just that they’ve been long since left behind.

I fly for another ten minutes, but all of the two hundred demons following after me still manage to keep up. And something tells me that they have more stamina than I do as well, so I go ahead and fly for another ten minutes to build more distance between any of their demons that are lagging behind. Then I finally fly above an island and move high above the island. This island being one filled with massive jungle trees.

I sense the demons pausing when they reach the island a few minutes later, only for them to fly up and over the island as well.

Of course, I make sure to be at a spot I can easily escape from. That being high in the air. So they all find me right away and begin moving in my direction.

But I make sure to shout a them before they can prepare any attacks.

“Why the hell are you bothering me?!”

All of the stone demons near me pause at that before sharing glances with each other. Then they turn back to me and begin speaking at the same time, confusing the hell out of me.

“Enemy.” “Archdemon. “Kill.” “Ordered.” “Kill.” “Kill.” “Declared.” “Wrath.”

Okay, that answered a few questions.

For one, these demons in front of me – each of which are warrior or high demons – are all smarter than the other stone demons I’ve run into so far.

They also have very little teamwork, considering how some of them are literally bumping into the others. And they’re all speaking over each other.

Although even though they are smarter, they’re still dumb.

And now that I’ve got my answers, I send half a dozen bolts of Wrath lightning at them before flying straight down to the island. Immediately hiding myself amongst the massive trees filling the island.

As expected, all of the demons soon begin to chase after me in a very unorganized manner. So unorganized that some of them crash into each other and the large trees themselves. Which proceeds to knock over some of those trees.

Then, to my great pleasure, it begins to rain.

And I mean it starts pouring down rain.

Something I was expecting a little bit due to the dark clouds above the island. One of the reasons I chose the island in the first place.

My grin grows even wider at the sight of the demons now beginning to bumble about without much direction. As if they’re all lost in the jungle on the island.

And another thing confirmed.

While I was flying, I tested several things to see how the demons tracked me. Whether they could see me through regular ways, through magic, or what. Because I was sure a lot of them were seeing me through objects. And other demons amongst them don’t even have eyes.

But they were all chasing after me, and none of them ever seemed to lose track of me.

Except when I passed through an island filled with water and traveled through the water on it. And after that, every single time I passed through water just to test this theory.

These stone demons all seem to be able to track liquid. Maybe water, or maybe just any liquid.

So this rain is messing up their perception entirely.

I quickly take advantage of their disorientation and the fact that they can’t see light – judging by how none of them are reacting to my glowing crimson eyes in the jungle rain – to begin hunting down the demons one after another. Enhancing my physical strength with Wrath energy, both mine and theirs, and using Wrath lightning to destroy them.

And just like that, the next hour or so passes, with the two or so hundred demons on the island slowly decreasing in number down to a mere fifty.

I would continue hunting them even after that for more EXP, seeing as they’re easy targets right now and are weaker than me naturally even at a higher level, but I leave when I sense the other demons that were trailing behind beginning to arrive.

Hundreds of other demons.

And it’s best to dip out now while these demons are assuming I’m still after them and are disoriented.

After slipping away from the demons at last, I go ahead and begin heading in the opposite direction of their fortress. Because while I am curious about what sort of forces they left behind and whether their leader was amongst the ones I killed, I can’t risk it. Not when there are likely thousands still at the fortress. And even if I am in a place dense with Wrath energy, I’m still radiating Wrath energy myself.

So there’s a good chance they’ll spot me if I tried taking a look.

What I can do right now is go around asking the other demons that aren’t with the rebels about that one particular fortress.

Although it might take a little while, seeing as I didn’t find any non-rebel demons even throughout that entire chase despite flying for several hours. So there aren’t any non-rebels nearby.

I glance back in the direction of the island with the rain still pouring down on me. Then I face forwards again while glancing at the sky to see the rain eventually ending around three or so minutes of flying ahead of me.

The rain is certainly acting as a rather convenient cover for me today.
