The Boundless Ascendant

Chapter 93: Chapter 93: The Price of Power

The cavern's oppressive silence hung heavy in the air, broken only by the soft hum of energy pulsing beneath their feet. Ling Xiao stood still, his thoughts swirling, as he processed the words of the Echo. The Source was not something to be controlled, nor was it a gift. It was an ancient, unstoppable force. And now it was a part of him, irrevocably intertwined with his being.

The weight of the realization pressed on him, heavier than any physical burden. He was no longer just a man; he was a conduit, a vessel for a power far beyond his comprehension. A power that had chosen him, not because of his strength, but because he could endure it.

But what did that mean?

The power was still within him, thrumming like a dark pulse in his chest. He could feel it, every beat of his heart syncing with its restless energy. It was his ally, and yet, it was also his prison.

Zhen Xue's voice cut through the silence. **"Ling Xiao, are you alright?"**

He glanced at her, her face full of concern. Her sword was still drawn, her posture tense, as if waiting for some unseen threat to emerge from the darkness. She was always ready for a fight, but there was something different in her eyes now. It was the same wariness that he himself felt, the feeling that they were standing on the edge of something vast and unknown.

Ling Xiao nodded slowly, though his mind was far from calm. **"I'm fine."** His voice was steady, but there was an edge to it. **"I just… I need to think."**

Zhen Xue gave him a searching look but said nothing. She had learned over the years to give him space when he needed it. And right now, he needed silence.

The cavern around them seemed to hum with energy, as if it too was alive, aware of their presence. The strange glowing substance underfoot pulsed with a rhythm that matched the beat of Ling Xiao's heart. The deeper they ventured into this ancient place, the more he felt its power pressing against him—an ever-present reminder of what he had become.

**"The Source is more than just a force of nature,"** Ling Xiao said quietly, more to himself than to Zhen Xue. **"It's a presence. A consciousness. It watches. It guides. It… controls."**

Zhen Xue moved closer, her hand resting lightly on the hilt of her sword. **"Then what are we supposed to do now? The Echo said we couldn't fight it, that it's part of you now. What does that mean for us? For the world?"**

Ling Xiao turned to face her, his gaze dark and full of uncertainty. **"I don't know yet."** He paused, his voice dropping to a whisper. **"But I won't let it destroy me."**

The cavern shuddered again, the walls groaning as if the very earth beneath their feet was shifting. Ling Xiao's eyes snapped to the ground as a tremor ran through the stone. The Source was responding to something. His heart raced as he reached out with his senses, trying to understand what was happening.

**"It's reacting to us,"** he muttered, his brow furrowing. **"Something's coming."**

Without warning, the walls of the cavern seemed to warp, bending and twisting like liquid stone. The air became thick, charged with energy, and the glowing substance beneath their feet began to pulse faster, more erratically.

**"Get ready,"** Ling Xiao said, his hand instinctively moving toward the hilt of his sword. But before he could draw it, the ground before them split open with a violent crack, revealing a dark abyss that seemed to stretch downward infinitely.

A figure emerged from the depths, rising slowly, its form a silhouette against the swirling chaos. The energy from the Source seemed to converge around it, as if the very cavern recognized the being and bent to its will.

The figure was tall, its form draped in flowing robes that shimmered with a strange, otherworldly light. Its face was obscured, hidden beneath a hood, but Ling Xiao could feel its presence—its power—pressing in on him from all sides. This was no ordinary creature. This was something ancient, something tied to the Source in a way he could not yet understand.

**"Who are you?"** Ling Xiao demanded, his voice steady but filled with an underlying tension.

The figure did not speak immediately. Instead, it tilted its head, as if considering Ling Xiao, studying him.

**"I am the Watcher,"** the figure finally said, its voice deep and resonant, carrying an unsettling weight. **"I am the guardian of the Source, the one who keeps it from spiraling into chaos. And you, Ling Xiao, have awoken it from its slumber."**

Ling Xiao's grip tightened on his sword. **"The Echo spoke of you. But I don't understand. Why has the Source chosen me? Why am I its vessel?"**

The Watcher stepped forward, the ground beneath its feet rippling with each movement. **"You are not the first to bear the Source. There have been others before you. But they were not strong enough. They did not endure. The Source chose you because you have the potential to wield its power, but at a cost."**

Ling Xiao's eyes narrowed. **"A cost?"**

The Watcher nodded, its form flickering like a shadow. **"The Source is not a gift. It is a curse. Every power you gain comes with a price. Your body, your soul, your very existence will be tied to it. You will be driven to the edge of madness, torn between your humanity and the pull of the Source."**

Zhen Xue took a step back, her hand now gripping her sword tighter. **"How can you say that?"** she asked, her voice sharp with disbelief. **"The Source is a power like no other. It has the potential to change everything. To save us all."**

The Watcher's gaze shifted to Zhen Xue, and for a moment, Ling Xiao could swear he felt a flicker of recognition in the ancient being's eyes. **"Save?"** the Watcher repeated, its voice tinged with amusement. **"You misunderstand. The Source is not here to save. It is here to reshape. It will consume, it will destroy, and only those who are worthy of its power will be left standing."**

Ling Xiao's chest tightened as the Watcher's words sank in. **"So, it's true,"** he whispered. **"This power... this Source... it's not something I can control. It controls me."**

The Watcher did not answer directly. Instead, it stepped closer, its presence overwhelming, filling the cavern with an almost tangible pressure. **"Control is an illusion, child. You are merely a conduit, a reflection of the Source's will. The question is not whether you can control it, but whether you can survive it."**

Ling Xiao's heart pounded. **"Survive it?"** he repeated, his voice shaking despite his efforts to remain composed. **"What do you mean? What happens if I can't?"**

The Watcher's face remained hidden, but Ling Xiao could sense the ancient being's gaze upon him, like a predator studying its prey. **"If you cannot survive the Source, you will become nothing. A mere husk, consumed by its power. You will lose your humanity, your mind, until there is nothing left but the Source itself."**

The words hung in the air like a death sentence, and Ling Xiao felt his heart falter. Was he truly prepared to face this? Was he prepared to bear the weight of the Source and everything that came with it?

He glanced at Zhen Xue, who stood silently beside him, her face a mask of resolve, but her eyes filled with concern. She had always stood by him, even when the odds seemed insurmountable.

Ling Xiao turned back to the Watcher, his voice low but firm. **"Then tell me how I survive it."**

The Watcher's form shimmered with a strange light, and its voice echoed with ancient wisdom. **"To survive, you must let go of your fear. Let go of your attachments. Accept the Source for what it is—an inseparable part of you. And above all, you must make a choice. A choice that will determine whether you are consumed by the Source, or whether you will learn to wield it."**

The cavern seemed to hold its breath, the very air thick with the weight of those words. Ling Xiao stood still, his mind racing.

"Choose," he whispered to himself, the burden of the decision pressing on him like never before. "I've always had to choose."

He turned his gaze to the Watcher, his resolve hardening. "Then I choose to fight. I will not be consumed. I will learn to wield this power."

The Watcher's form flickered once more, a smile or something like it shimmering on its face. "Then, child, the path is yours. But remember this: The Source will never release you. It will always be a part of you. And every choice you make will shape your fate."
