Chapter 829: Points of Suspicion
Ye Shikai suddenly felt a bit regretful. If it had been him at the scene instead of Zhang Ting, he could have captured them all in one go and eradicated the problem. When Zhang Ting got injured and was receiving treatment, Ye Shikai felt a slight sense of guilt. Tianjing had once advised him to let Zhang Ting withdraw from this case, but Ye Shikai did not agree and went along with Zhang Ting's wishes. Although it was unexpected for Zhang Ting to run into them last night, Ye Shikai instinctively thought it was because of the case investigation. But then again, why did the opponent choose to knock Zhang Ting unconscious rather than kill her?
But fortunately, the adversaries spared Zhang Ting; otherwise, it would have been a blow to Ye Shikai.
"Boss Xing, are you sure you didn't see it wrong?"
"Of course, I'm sure I didn't see it wrong. I'm too familiar with his appearance," Zhang Ting stated firmly. However, Boss Xing always wore a mask on his face. Instead of remembering his looks, it was more about that "signature" mask.
"So, the demon exorcist should also be a test subject of the HST project," Ye Shikai said calmly. Boss Xing must be the person in charge of the HST project, and Zhao Rou was a puppet under his control.
The thought of it made Ye Shikai furious—harming the ones close to him, researching such a monster as the Mothman. It was utterly inhumane, a thousand times more detestable than the demon exorcist.
"How long have I been unconscious?" Zhang Ting rubbed her temples, her voice sounding a bit weak.
"About twelve hours, I guess." Ye Shikai glanced at his watch and said calmly, "You should rest first; even a minor concussion is unpleasant."
"No way, they must have run far by now. I need to chase them," Zhang Ting said as she tried to lift the quilt and get out of bed.
"Stop, stop, stop, my dear sister. You must be knocked senseless. Twelve hours, they could have escaped Huaxia by now, and you still want to mark the boat for a spear?" Ye Shikai quickly stopped Zhang Ting. The doctor said she needed proper rest.
"I'm fine. I'm in great health."
"Alright, alright, don't be stubborn. Boss Xing is a cultivator; you don't even know his strength. Even if you go now, you can't avenge yourself." Ye Shikai felt a bit helpless; Zhang Ting had a stubborn temper and wouldn't listen to advice at all.
"But I can't let him continue arrogantly."
"Alright, I promise you, I will definitely avenge you. Besides, you really need rest now. You've been sleepless investigating this case; take this chance to rest up." Finally, under Ye Shikai's earnest persuasion, Zhang Ting gave up on the idea of "revenge."
"Alright, you rest here; I'll go investigate the case now."
"Wait." Just as Ye Shikai was about to leave, Zhang Ting suddenly grabbed his hand.
"What's up? Didn't I tell you, get a good rest first, then solve the case..."
"No, I just suddenly remembered something." Zhang Ting immediately said, "I recall when I first got there last night, they seemed to be... fighting."
"What, fighting? Are you sure you didn't see it wrong?" Ye Shikai felt like he'd been struck by lightning; this was unexpected for him. Fighting? Weren't they supposed to be in cahoots?
"Yes, really. I heard them fighting, so I went over to check." Zhang Ting worried that Ye Shikai wouldn't believe her and almost cried in urgency.
....................................
"What, fighting?" Tianjing, looking at the scene where Zhang Ting had collapsed last night, said in surprise.
"Yeah, that's what Zhang Ting said."
"So, they're not together then."
"No, you can't say that. Maybe their relationship is more complex." Ye Shikai felt somewhat troubled.
Thump, thump, thump.
At this moment, the noise of renovations came from afar. Ye Shikai looked in that direction—it was a huge villa. This wasn't a residential area, and building a villa here seemed quite unconventional.
However, Ye Shikai's attention was on those construction workers. They were repairing the villa's outer wall, and a large hole made him feel some anomaly.
He had heard of water leaks inside a house, but whose house would have such a large hole on the outer wall, unless it was due for demolition...
Ye Shikai slowly walked towards the villa, intending to find out more.
"Stop, don't you see? It's under renovation here, don't get close, idle people," a construction worker waved his hand impatiently and scolded.
"Are you repairing the outer wall here?"
"Nonsense, can't you see?"
"Which family lives inside?" Ye Shikai continued to ask.
"Kid, are you too curious? Go away, go away." Seeing that the construction workers were unwilling to engage, Ye Shikai was a bit unhappy and called over Tianjing, took out his credentials, and then... went in righteously for an investigation.
"This house... feels a bit eerie." Ye Shikai sniffed the air and frowned.
"Eerie... you can smell it?" Tianjing teased.
"According to the construction workers, they also came here this morning to fix the wall. Don't you think such a large hole is man-made?" Ye Shikai said calmly.
"It seems so, but what does this imply?"
"What if I told you this villa was transferred this morning, what would you think?" Ye Shikai said mysteriously.
"What, transferred ownership, is that true?"
"Of course, it's true. The original owner of this villa was from out of town and sold it to a local in Yanjing today. These workers were also called by him because no one would live in a house with such a large hole, right?"
"That sounds really suspicious then." Tianjing nodded. There were no surveillance cameras nearby, and the area's public security wasn't good. Building a villa here was already very unusual.
"This place is not far from the crime scene. I highly suspect this villa is Boss Xing's hideout." Ye Shikai's gaze was heavy, and what aroused his suspicion the most was the "throne" above the steps in the living room. This kind of decor was more like the living room of a medieval castle, sitting on the "throne," looking down at the "servants" below.
Probably only Boss Xing would have such a "hobby."
"You mean they relocated the base immediately due to fear of exposure."
"You could say that." Ye Shikai nodded.
"Then let's search it quickly. In their haste, they might have left something behind."
"Just what I had in mind." Ye Shikai smiled slyly and walked directly inside. It was an enclosed room with only one door and no windows. When the switch was pressed, it was discovered even the lights had been removed.
Helplessly, the two had to use flashlights to illuminate. It seemed like an office, with A4 papers scattered all over the place and some broken glass.
"This glass is thin, not like what's used for lamps, and the glass is curved, more like… laboratory glassware used in chemical experiments."
