The Bodyguard King’s CEO Wife

Chapter 707: Knowing the Secret

The dense Life Tree is the Origin of Life for the elves. Like all plants that require photosynthesis, their vitality dips at night, and the Life Tree is no exception.

Around the tree, there were hundreds of elven soldiers responsible for guarding it. The elves' vision was as good as their ability to leap, enhanced by their Inner Strength, giving them a significant advantage in nighttime combat.

"Swoosh swoosh swoosh."

"Did you hear something?" Beneath the tree, an elven soldier lifted his head, thinking he had just heard the sound of someone sneaking in.

"No, it's probably just the sound of wind blowing through the leaves." The elf soldier next to him looked up, seeing no one among the leaves.

"Stop making a fuss and stay focused on patrolling."

"Yes."

Atop the Life Tree, on a thick branch.

"That was really close." Ye Shikai squatted on the thick branch, removing the Netherworld King's Helmet from his head, his body immediately becoming visible as he gasped for breath. Just now, he had used the Inner God Scripture to forcibly enhance his Inner Strength, which allowed him to activate both the Shadow Clone and the Netherworld King's Helmet simultaneously. Even for someone of Kun Level like him, the energy drain from stealthily dodging all along the way was hard to bear.

"Thank goodness I've made it up here." Ye Shikai moved stealthily, continuously climbing higher using the dense branches.

...

Ye Shikai's sudden farewell caught Mona off-guard. On the way back to the sacred hall, she was even more downhearted and distracted, which happened to be noticed by the Great Elder of the Primordial Soul, leading to a leisurely walk to clear their minds.

"Your Highness, are you troubled by something?" The Great Elder of the Primordial Soul, leaning on a heavy wooden cane, spoke as they walked.

"No... Nothing."

"Your Highness, there's no need to hide it from me. At this moment, your heart must be thinking of that human youth," the Great Elder of the Primordial Soul said with a faint smile.

"Great Elder, how did you know?"

"Your Highness, ever since that human youth arrived, you've been in this state. Not just me, the entire Hall Guards can see it."

"Don't tease me, Great Elder," sighed Mona. "There's something else between him and me."

"Is it... marriage?" The Great Elder of the Primordial Soul suddenly smiled knowingly. Mona's body twitched. How could anyone know about this? It was supposed to be a secret. Why would this be?

"Great Elder, please don't joke about such things." Mona hastily tried to cover up, as if a little girl's secret had been revealed to the public.

"Haha, Your Highness, this matter is something I've actually known about for two thousand years," the Great Elder of the Primordial Soul suddenly said with a laugh. Mona abruptly stopped. The secret marriage arrangement that Ye Shikai and she made should have been entirely secret. How could the Great Elder possibly know?

"Your Highness need not be surprised; I happened to overhear this secret at the time," the Great Elder chuckled. She was an elder of the elven race, already the Great Elder of the Primordial Soul two thousand years ago, while at that time, Mona was just a member of the Hall Guards.

"In reality, 'Birds of a feather flock together, people are sorted by their groups.' Not all humans are greedy and ambitious, and our race's attitude towards humans is largely subjective," they continued chatting as they walked.

"Now, I'm over eight thousand years old. I've watched over the human race since they established their government. Most humans, in fact, just like us, love peace. Liruo's parents were killed by humans; hence, she finds it difficult to let go of her prejudices against them. Alas, when will this cycle of vengeance end?" The Great Elder sighed. "It was because ambitious humans began to attack our race in the past, and the elf king of that time was too arrogant, resulting in tens of thousands of elves dying senselessly."

"Even now, our race still harbors hostility toward humans. In the end, it's not that the elves are malevolent or seek endless revenge; we fear that the catastrophe of those days will be repeated."

"Great Elder, with that being said, what are your thoughts on Ye Shikai?" Mona asked tentatively.

"Enduring without being covertly weak, proud without arrogance, having a benevolent heart yet not without strategies, valuing loyalty and friendship, he's surely destined for great things." The Great Elder spoke firmly, emphasizing each word. Mona rarely heard such high praise from the Great Elder, especially for a human.

"This man indeed has deep connections with General Ye from two thousand years ago."

"Great Elder, you also think they are the same person?" Mona asked excitedly, grabbing the Great Elder's hands.

"No, they can be said to be the same person, yet they are also not."

"Great Elder, what do you mean?" Mona was confused by this statement.

"These are things for you to experience on your own, Your Highness. You and he will meet again," the Great Elder finished, at which Mona immediately showed a look of disappointment.

"Great Elder, but he's already left, and he's already married."

"Is that so, Your Highness? Are you sure he has left?" The Great Elder suddenly stopped, giving Mona a mysterious smile.

"Great Elder, do you mean…?"

"Look."

Following the direction pointed by the cane, Mona looked up to see a dark figure darting about the Life Tree. Though fast, she still caught sight of him.

"He didn't leave after all." A light sparkled in Mona's eyes as she exclaimed.

"As I said earlier, he is loyal and committed. Since his wife's medicine hasn't been obtained yet, how could he easily give up?" The Great Elder said smilingly. "Your Highness, from now on, you will decide for yourself."

...

Ye Shikai continued to climb up, as the three awakening fruits glowing with red light became increasingly apparent. Once he got them, he could return and save Su Qingyu. Ye Shikai had already decided to leave most of the medicinal pills as compensation, which would mean that it wouldn't count as thievery.

Whoosh.

"What's that?" Ye Shikai swiftly turned around as an arrow whizzed past close to his side. He immediately jumped onto a nearby branch and looked down to find Mona with a bow in her hand, her expression revealing a mysterious smile.

"Damn, how did I get discovered?" Ye Shikai was momentarily overwhelmed. Now, he was only a dozen meters away from the awakening fruits, and he had to hold out.

"No, I need to get the awakening fruits first." Ye Shikai's eyes were resolute. With one leap, he could grab the fruits. At the same time, Mona's bow was fully drawn.

As Ye Shikai leapt powerfully, he swiftly pulled out the Netherworld King's Helmet, channeled all his Inner Strength, and vanished from the spot.

"What, he disappeared," Mona turned pale with shock, her hands involuntarily loosening and the arrow flying from the string.

Ye Shikai launched himself into the air, the arrow striking the very branch he had just stepped on, and by then, he was already in mid-air. Stretching out his right hand, he grabbed the awakening fruit.
