Chapter 309: Poaching
Song Moting and the others also saw the snowflakes, and the moment they saw them, they had already entered a distant mountain hollow.
In the deepest part of that hollow, they saw two small wooden cabins.
Although they hadn't yet found a way out, seeing those cabins filled them with a sense of joy.
There are many cabins in this mountain forest because forestry workers often need to go around cutting timber, and they frequently live in these cabins for one to two months at a time.
So, they built some simple cabins here and there to provide temporary shelter for the workers.
Whether anyone is there now is another matter, but at least seeing the cabin is like seeing hope; where there are cabins, workers are likely to appear.
At least tonight they wouldn't be exposed in the wilderness, especially now that it has started to snow heavily again.
In weather like this, their chances of surviving outdoors are very slim.
The three of them rushed madly toward the cabins, which seemed deceptively close.
In reality, that distance was not close at all.
As the snow got heavier, their vision blurred, and the journey left them dizzy and faint.
Just as they were about to reach the cabin, a sudden roar erupted.
Followed by a tremendous noise.
Song Moting tackled Jiang Xiaoxiao to the ground in the snow.
Zhang Baocheng had already instinctively fallen to the roadside.
The loud noise left Jiang Xiaoxiao's ears ringing, and she still didn't know what had happened.
She could only see Song Moting's mouth moving in front of her, but couldn't make out what he was saying.
Zhang Baocheng rolled into the ditch in front.
Then came another booming sound.
The snow in front of Zhang Baocheng was blown into the air, and he dared not move, shrinking back motionlessly on the ground.
Song Moting held Jiang Xiaoxiao,
using his own body to shield her tightly.
He hadn't heard wrong; what he heard was gunfire.
Guns are supposed to be state-controlled, and the presence of firearms here was alarming, especially because he could clearly distinguish the sound of the bullets as those from a rudimentary hunting rifle.
Hunting is prohibited here, after all.
But some people would often risk bringing homemade hunting guns up the mountain to poach.
Whether other areas allowed hunting, he wasn't sure, but the forestry area had explicit regulations.
The land of the forestry area belongs to the state and the collective, and is already fenced off!
Random people can't just enter the forestry area, but now there's someone with a gun, which means they're poachers.
Because they've seen many rare animals in the mountain forests, like tigers.
Some people would take great risks to make money, such as selling tiger bones and skins for a good price.
Not to mention those who want bear paws, and other stuff, all of which are explicitly banned from hunting by the state.
Five people emerged from the forest, holding guns, pointing the dark muzzles at the three of them.
"Hands up high. Now, walk into the house."
Someone commanded.
Song Moting was observing them, thinking about how to escape.
With his skills, handling five people alone wasn't too difficult, but the biggest problem was that all five had guns. Even though they were rudimentary hunting rifles, they were still lethal.
Jiang Xiaoxiao had no ability to resist, especially along with Zhang Baocheng.
He could resist on his own.
If these people fired, even if he remained unscathed, Jiang Xiaoxiao and the others would likely become the targets.
Even if there was a slight danger, he would not let his wife take that risk or use Jiang Xiaoxiao's life to play the hero.
The three of them were herded into the cabin, and as soon as they entered, the heat hit them, stifling their breaths.
The air inside was very foul.
Once inside, they realized that although they saw two small houses, behind them there was actually another small house.
But the house at the back seemed like it was for storing clutter and was built not as tall as the houses in front.
There were seven or eight people in total inside the cabins.
Everyone held a hunting rifle in their hands.
They scrutinized the three of them up and down.
Jiang Xiaoxiao could see a pile of things in the corner, giving off a strong stench of blood.
The things piled up were wild animals from the mountains, with some explicitly prohibited from hunting by the state, and considered protected species.
The loud noise from earlier still left her ears buzzing, even though she couldn't hear sounds well. But she roughly understood the situation; they had run into poachers.
The others were all armed.
They had essentially stumbled in, breaking all of this open, and these poachers certainly wouldn't let them go.
If they reported to the forestry station, all these people would face execution.
The three strangers were sized up coldly; they didn't even realize Jiang Xiaoxiao was a woman.
Nor did they look again, benefiting from the fact that after tumbling down the mountain, their faces were smeared with blood and grime.
Added to the mess of the past couple of days, with the smoke and soot, their outfits made it hard to tell male from female.
The strange attire caused the men to laugh heartily for a long while.
"Who are you, and what are you doing here?"
Song Moting eagerly answered, "We're locals from the nearby village, originally came up the mountain to find some things. Who knew we'd fall off the mountain. Got lost, can't find the way out, stumbled upon here, we didn't see anything."
Song Moting dropped his perfect Mandarin and started replying in the local dialect mixed with rural slang.
Evidently, after hearing his words, they sized Song Moting up again, noticing his demeanor had changed; his waist began to hunch, and his back slowly slouched, with his shoulders dropping.
He had turned into an honest and hardworking mountain man just like that.
"Who are these two then?"
"We're family; this is my big brother, and this is my little brother. We originally thought the three brothers could hunt a bit on the mountain to improve life back home; as you can see all over us, it's rabbit fur.
That's all we can do with the skills the older generations passed down. Who would have thought we're unfamiliar with this mountain, ended up here after falling. Now we're like this, can't find the way out no matter what."
Jiang Xiaoxiao smiled slightly, her hearing seemed to gradually return, understanding roughly what Song Moting was saying, listening to his fluent dialect.
She hadn't expected that Song Moting had picked up such local dialect skills in just over a year here.
Learned from the forestry workers, probably.
And now he's applying it on the spot, directly using it on these people.
Zhang Baocheng, scared to the core, just nodded.
"Seeing you guys dressed like this, it's startling, looks like a hunter indeed. Look at all this rabbit fur. It must've taken a lot of effort to survive in the mountain! Alright, since you're here, just stay with us.
When we go down the mountain, we'll take you out with us; we'll provide food. But food doesn't come free; you have to help take care of these wild animals every day. Skinning needs to be done, and you do as we're told. Of course, you'll get some benefits in the end."
Delighted to see ready labor, these people were pleased.
They were stuck there too, had caught quite a few prey, but if stuck like this, the animals could rot for nothing.
It would be a waste by then, so meeting such capable hunters made them happy. They could hunt, but processing these skins and such was beyond them.
Here were ready people, after all.
Whether or not they'd take them out after using them was up to their mood.
After all, this was a remote mountain forest, and if they ended up buried here, no one would know.
