Chapter 307: I Can Carry You All the Way Back to Our Home
Jiang Xiaoxiao and Song Moting are roasting rabbits, these are the last two.
The driver is much better today and can walk with crutches.
Jiang Xiaoxiao made three pairs of shoes out of rabbit skins.
Thanks to Song Moting's good skills, he managed to catch over a dozen rabbits in the past two days.
On this mountain, there's not much else, but there are plenty of rabbits.
Jiang Xiaoxiao managed to sew rabbit skins into boots over their cotton shoes.
They wrapped up to the knees.
She folded some small branches at the bottom of the cotton shoes, then used strips of fabric torn from the quilt lining to tie them to the shoes.
This increases friction, avoiding danger while walking on snowy ground.
It's been three days since they fell.
Probably because they fell too far from the cliff, they couldn't see any rescuers, nor any signs of a rescue.
So the three of them discussed and decided to walk out of this mountain by themselves; at this point, if they don't save themselves, they'll be stuck in this forest forever.
"Smells really good!"
Jiang Xiaoxiao raised her head sharply.
Song Moting stood beside her, his disheveled black hair and a stubble-covered jaw, eyes still sleepy.
His voice was a bit hoarse.
"Hungry?"
Song Moting hadn't stopped hunting, and the surrounding rabbits seemed to have been entirely taken by him.
He had to skin and clean the rabbits, staying busy until almost dawn.
"Not too bad, not very hungry."
He walked out to clean his face with snow, fully waking up in the process.
The tractor driver also got up to follow.
"We must get off the mountain quickly. The weather doesn't look right, I fear there might be another snowstorm, this time a big one, and if that happens, we'll be truly stuck on the mountain."
The driver, named Zhang Baocheng, was a local, more familiar with the terrain and the weather than Song Moting.
Song Moting looked at the gathering storm clouds above.
"Yes, we should leave as soon as possible. Even if we can't find a way out, going downhill is definitely the right move."
Rescue seems unlikely.
Song Moting was disappointed, but he understood.
From the perspective of the team leader and the plantation manager, it was impossible to risk everyone's safety like this.
If he were in their position, he wouldn't take such risks either.
One shouldn't morally bind others to act in dangerous situations because of their own predicament. He didn't think the team leader and Guo Dongjun were wrong.
This rescue mission was too hard.
"We're preparing to descend now, after Xiaoxiao finishes the last two rabbits, we'll pack our food and belongings, and depart."
In fact, they couldn't take much with them. Of course, the quilt was essential, better to wear it for warmth than leave it behind.
When they find shelter from the wind on the way, they can use these quilts to stay warm.
But their boxes and the other things inside couldn't be taken.
An hour later, the three were ready.
They wore coats, wrapped quilts into rolls, tied them with ropes on their backs.
Pillowcases and pillow covers were sewn into makeshift backpacks holding their food.
Luckily, all three had military canteens.
These were filled with hot water.
On their feet were snow boots modified by Jiang Xiaoxiao, wearing not only coats but also rabbit skin-made pants and hats.
Jiang Xiaoxiao's handiwork was passable, considering limited tools, their creations were indeed amusing.
If outsiders saw them, they'd probably laugh.
Their outfits were utterly mismatched.
Like hobos and adventurers.
The three examined each other and nearly burst into laughter.
Holding sturdy tree branch crutches, they began the challenging walk down the mountain.
Jiang Xiaoxiao was the last to leave.
No one saw the missing boxes and things.
Zhang Baocheng led the way, as the local, familiar with the terrain.
Jiang Xiaoxiao was in the middle, with Song Moting at the back.
As the mountain's slope gradually changed. The temperature seemed less cold. At least the wind didn't cut like earlier on the mountain.
Jiang Xiaoxiao felt her legs were filled with lead, each step felt like lifting a ton-heavy stone.
This long journey, they've been walking for almost five to six hours. And rested only for ten minutes.
For Jiang Xiaoxiao, this physically exhausting movement was reaching her limit.
Her back, body, and forehead were sweating, her lungs felt ablaze.
She felt she could collapse at any moment.
Descending seemed simple, but was far from the imagination.
Snow boots were clumsy, and the downhill path was rugged.
Roads were extremely uneven, unknown dangers hidden beneath the snow.
Sometimes the slope was too steep, she had to grip the crutch tightly or risk sliding down the cliff.
At times, there was no path ahead, they had to search around for a less difficult way down.
Homemade snow boots were cumbersome, she had to lift her leg high with each step, looking awkward.
She felt utterly exhausted.
Perhaps due to insufficient leg lifts or crude shoes, her right snow boot suddenly kicked something buried under the snow, causing her to fall forward.
She managed to brace herself with her hands, then landed on her right knee, slowly sitting up.
Her hands and knees hurt, but her right ankle hurt intensely.
She silently cursed, bracing her calf, slowly rotating her ankle, checking for any bone injury.
"Are you hurt?"
Song Moting kneeled beside her, a strip of gray rabbit skin covered his nose and mouth, and his black eyes were full of concern.
"I'm fine, just a minor sprain, but I think I can still walk."
She said, moving the injured area, initially painful, but eventually the pain lessened.
It seemed like nothing serious.
She tried to stand up, but her right snow boot was still tightly bound.
If the snow boot had slipped during her fall, she might not have sprained her foot.
Now it's the same.
"Help me up."
He grabbed her hand, pulling her up.
Carefully supporting her.
She cautiously shifted weight to her injured foot.
The first step hurt, the second step was less painful.
"Seems fine."
She said.
Releasing his hand.
"Not severely hurt."
"If you're unable to walk, I can carry you down."
He frowned, studying her gait as if she were a fragile glass doll.
Jiang Xiaoxiao paused, stunned by his words.
This person, is he still human?
"Are you crazy? A path no one can walk, and you want to carry me down, do you think you're Superman?"
He glanced at her, eyes determined.
"I can not only carry you down the mountain, but I'll also carry you back home."
Jiang Xiaoxiao blushed.
Zhang Baocheng watched them, smiling, standing at a distance but definitely hearing every word.
This man, at such a moment, was flirting with her.
"I can walk myself, no need for anyone to carry."
Song Moting chuckled.
The shy young wife.
