The Blessed Beauty Returns with a Dimension

Chapter 271: Past Events Like Smoke

When they arrived at the hospital, Bai Yiyi was immediately taken into emergency care.

At first, the nurses wouldn't allow Jiang Xiaoxiao to see her because Jiang Xiaoxiao was neither family nor well-acquainted with the patient.

The child welfare institution had already been notified, and someone was handling administrative matters.

What they did was reasonable, even kind-hearted, but they couldn't handle Jiang Xiaoxiao.

She was stubborn; unless she saw the child, not even the police could move her.

In the end, the exhausted nurses succumbed to her strong will and agreed to let her go into the small ward to visit Bai Yiyi.

As soon as Jiang Xiaoxiao saw the child, she knew why she was so concerned about her.

It wasn't just that she was gravely ill; it was also her wary and resistant attitude. Many aspects of Bai Yiyi strongly reminded her of herself, she couldn't ignore Bai Yiyi, just as she couldn't ignore her own children.

Why should she spare no effort for her stepchildren as Jiang Xiaoxiao did, and what could deter her from helping a stray child?

Jiang Xiaoxiao's gaze swept over the silent child lying on the hospital bed; her eyelids were shut, she was breathing laboriously.

The fever had tinted her high cheekbones with a flush.

Her right hand was secured to the bedside to facilitate the intravenous drip, while another bag by the bed monitored her urine output.

Jiang Xiaoxiao approached the bedside, focusing her attention on the sick and helpless girl on the snow-white sheets.

She gently placed her cool hand on her forehead and smoothed her hair.

"You'll be alright," she whispered. "I promise."

Bai Yiyi struggled to lift her heavy eyelids, while Jiang Xiaoxiao gazed into a pair of bright black eyes, their edges a clean and pure sky-blue.

Bewildered, Bai Yiyi first focused on Jiang Xiaoxiao's face, then glanced at the doctors and nurses, as well as the welfare institution staff in work attire; a flicker of fear surfaced in her eyes. She tried to sit up, but she was too weak to even lift her hand.

Jiang Xiaoxiao moved to Bai Yiyi's other side, "Don't be afraid," she said quietly, "You are in the hospital now."

Then, as if sensing the girl's deepest nightmares, she added.

"I won't let anyone take you away."

Those bright eyes studied her face, perhaps Jiang Xiaoxiao's appearance finally calmed her down.

Like a cautious wild animal, Bai Yiyi gradually relaxed and drifted into sleep.

When Bai Yiyi's condition improved, Jiang Xiaoxiao began to take action.

She resolved never to let the girl, who had yet to share her experiences, be taken into the welfare institution, not even for a day.

Through private connections, she used her influence, and a patient she once saved helped her at the time.

After all, the welfare institution wouldn't notice one more or one less child.

Her persistence and strength finally paid off.

When Bai Yiyi was discharged, she went home with Jiang Xiaoxiao.

Though there wasn't yet friendship or trust, Bai Yiyi gradually acclimated to Jiang Xiaoxiao and the children in the household.

She would answer their questions, though her responses were brief, and she never truly engaged in conversation with them.

Jiang Xiaoxiao did not lose heart.

From the start, she simply treated her as her own child, and very soon, she truly was such.

This once-lonely girl was suddenly drawn into a happy and relaxed family, for the first time in her life she could sleep under a roof every night, have her own room and a belly full of food.

She had clothes hanging in the closet and new shoes on her feet.

Her body was still frail, unable to partake in household chores that everyone else was doing, but Jiang Xiaoxiao began to guide her studies, since she was the same age as her stepdaughter Zhang Xin; she supervised her learning, bringing her up to Zhang Xin's level.

Bai Yiyi's thirst for books was like a starving puppy seeing food, placing books readily accessible.

Those astute, cautious eyes guarded the subtle changes in family relationships, weighing how what she saw differed from what she knew before.

Finally, she relaxed enough to let her guard down, telling Jiang Xiaoxiao her name was Bai Yiyi.

The relationship between Bai Yiyi and every family member was quite complex.

She wanted to distance herself from Jiang Xiaoxiao but was unable to; she treated her like a mother, just as she cared for other children. This terrified her, yet she joyfully immersed in her loving care.

Also like a big sister and a teacher, gradually getting Bai Yiyi accustomed to understanding there was nothing to be afraid of, Jiang Xiaoxiao offered her respect and friendship, ending with love.

Initially, Bai Yiyi slowly learned how family members interacted, how conversations brought them together, then she began to feel more at ease.

Zhang Xin's teasing could still anger her, but also made her laugh more easily than others.

Her learning ability was strong, as if she was naturally meant to be so.

In medicine, she demonstrated a doctor's innate keen sense and deadly patience and calmness. The child learned all medical skills from Jiang Xiaoxiao, then enrolled in the medical school and became a top-notch doctor.

When the child passed away, she cried uncontrollably.

Crying as a true child would.

Now she could not let her walk the path of the previous life.

Her student should have a better future, at least not suffer mental trauma.

Jiang Xiaoxiao sighed, Song Moting watched his wife.

Jiang Xiaoxiao always sighed alone, giving Song Moting the illusion that although she was beside him, there was a vast mountain and river between them.

This feeling, he genuinely disliked, leaving him distressed.

He thought they were soulmates, believed they loved and trusted each other, yet Jiang Xiaoxiao clearly had thoughts she wouldn't share.

"Xiao Xiao, what's wrong? If something's happened and you can tell me, maybe I can help? Are you still worried about that child?"

Song Moting's only guess referenced the child from earlier.

Jiang Xiaoxiao smiled, "Not for now, I am indeed worried about that child, always feel there's a connection between us, hope she can be happy. But for now, I need to feed your stomach first. Let's go, Brother Jin must be anxious waiting."

There's no use being anxious, Rome wasn't built in a day.

Being in a hurry doesn't mean the work will be done well.

"Xiao Xiao, if you ever really need to do something, be sure to tell me. Don't keep it in your heart alone. I'm your husband and your man, someone you can rely on, sharing between two is better than worrying alone."

Song Moting didn't want to dwell on this topic; Jiang Xiaoxiao didn't want to share, he wouldn't force her, he just hoped she knew he was her support.

Jiang Xiaoxiao nodded, "Got it, Mr. Song, if anything happens, I'll surely tell you, truly."

Though knowing she might never say, she was still touched by Song Moting's words. Having someone willing to be your support, this feeling was warm and comforting.

The two of them returned.
