Chapter 237: Just Right That You Came
Fan Xiuying watched as her daughter started scooping flour in the mixing bowl.
Getting ready to make dry noodles, she thought, with her daughter's small build, how much flour would this meal require? She felt a bit tender-hearted and couldn't sit still.
She stood up and took over.
"You just don't appreciate what you have. In front of your parents, we've never let you do such heavy work. And you think you're enjoying life. You, how should I say, why are you so foolish?"
She scooped out several bowls of flour and began kneading it with warm water.
Jiang Xiaoxiao didn't stand on ceremony with her mom.
Why be courteous? It's her mom, after all. Whenever her mom saw her working, she'd always rush to help, afraid her daughter would get tired.
She started picking and washing vegetables; after all, she planned to make noodle stew.
Taking down the dried meat from the beam, slicing it thin, and putting a bit of oil in the big pot.
This time of the year, mushrooms and fungus are abundant here; they don't lack these things.
She cleaned the mushrooms, fungi, and yellow flowers, cut them into small pieces, and tossed them into the pot to fry with the dried meat, then added a few scoops of water.
She sprinkled in soybeans and added the tofu strips she'd fried at noon, putting everything into the pot to cook.
Then she stuffed firewood into the stove, sat to the side, and started working the bellows.
"Mom, Dad, why are you here? I was thinking, by New Year's, I'd take leave to go back and spend it with you, but look, you're here now. By then, I wanted to ask the manager for leave, but that wasn't possible."
Jiang Xiaoxiao was mainly calculating that once the college entrance exam results were announced, in spring next year she'd have to report, so she reckoned she'd take leave to go back for the New Year and never return.
She timed it just right.
Fan Xiuying felt a bit regretful upon hearing it; had they known their daughter planned this, they wouldn't have come. Spending New Year at home was different from here. She could care for her daughter more back home; here, they lacked everything.
They'd come such a long way, too, through these poor, remote places.
While coming, they even saw fleeting shadows of wild beasts by the roadside on the mountain path. Though unclear on what they were, they both felt uneasy.
"You have only yourself to blame. If you'd written more letters home and told us about these things, would we have come? Oh, and you ask why we're here? I ask you, how did those things you sent come about?
Did you go up the mountain? I'm telling you, as a young girl, you can't be so bold. You dare do anything; this isn't home. Haven't you seen it's all mountains, all primitive forest?
Do you know what's in those mountains? What if you encounter wolves, tigers, and leopards? As a girl, could you fend them off? Or what then?
Think about how anxious you made us when we saw those things; it made us break out in a cold sweat. We decided right then to come see you, couldn't let your whims allow you to mess around."
After scolding her daughter, Fan Xiuying finally felt a bit relieved; they'd worried all the way there.
Just afraid something might happen to their daughter, these are deep mountains, forests, those wild beasts don't listen to you. Could they discuss with her, seeing her frail, not to eat her and choose someone else?
"Mom, don't worry about the stuff I sent back; it didn't come from deep forests. I found it nearby. I even told you, our small team planted ginseng this year, dozens of acres. We checked today; they're already longer than my fingers.
At least ten years old. We're planning to harvest the ginseng in a few days, sell and share the money, you and Dad came just in time. So when it's mealtime, help with the cooking, I'll head to the field to help harvest, when the money's divided, you both can take it back home.
Save me the worry of carrying money on the road."
Seeing her parents, Jiang Xiaoxiao calculated that this money could be quite a sum, so her parents could use it urgently, probably by year's end.
Remembering correctly, her grandmother was going to have a serious illness, her grandmother had always favored Uncle, but this time, both Uncle and Aunt played a disgraceful role in her grandmother's illness.
To save money on her grandmother's medical expenses, they forcibly moved the sickly old lady to her parents' place.
Left her at the doorstep and ran away.
This serious illness would cost a significant amount.
Her parents previously borrowed and patched from all over to gather money, borrowed so much, though her grandmother's illness was cured, they ended up deep in debt.
Until later when debt collectors almost drove her parents to despair.
Now, besides the gold bar money with her parents, plus this ginseng money, she believed that her grandmother this time could survive the ordeal.
Of course, her parents wouldn't need to hurry in worry.
Jiang Xiaoxiao tried to seize all opportunities from her previous life tightly, hoping a small disaster wouldn't tear this family apart, wouldn't cause this household to fall.
Her parents were just ordinary working-class people, they didn't have the capability or money to overcome this crisis, but she did.
Some might say she's too much of a "Holy Mother," being kind-hearted to everyone.
Jiang Xiaoxiao didn't see herself as a "Holy Mother!"
What does being a "Holy Mother" mean?
People can't just inherently think they're the center of the world, all bad or unfortunate things can't fall on them.
A little grievance shouldn't be exaggerated infinitely.
Even though her grandmother favored some, she never added to their difficulties; nonetheless, her father was also her grandmother's son, when in difficulty the grandmother helped, though at the time she hadn't the ability to help them much.
From this perspective, the old lady wasn't bad, can't just condemn someone for favoritism, hoping they'll get sick, and then refuse to help them as a form of punishment.
Jiang Xiaoxiao didn't believe that's true justice, people shouldn't just consider things from their own angles.
Thinking oneself reborn, as the main character, being invincible, all reason should be with them.
Besides, parental favoritism has existed throughout history, her grandmother's favoritism wasn't wrong, as people say, no five fingers are of equal length.
Should she hate her grandmother because of favoritism, not supporting her in distress, causing everyone related to fall into ruin, would that be what makes her proud?
These are family!
Favoritism or not, it's not something anyone can decide, no reason the old lady should be punished for that.
