The Black mamba

Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Operation Black Vault part 2

Lavex's fleet soared high above the airbase, its glowing remnants casting an eerie light against the cold night sky. Below, the semi-destroyed base shimmered like embers in the dark. Lavex's voice crackled through the intercom, sharp and impatient.

"Ruco, what's your ETA on those defense systems? We're sitting ducks up here. The enemy will launch their own fleet any moment now," Lavex said, his gaze fixed on the chaos below.

Ruco's voice came through, tense but controlled. "We're pinned down right outside the control room. Heavy fire's got us locked. Sit tight for a bit longer."

Ruco ducked behind a corner, bullets ricocheting against the walls as he exchanged a quick glance with his squad. "Take point," he barked at a soldier crouched beside him. "Sprint across the hall. I'll toss a flashbang to give you cover."

The soldier nodded, adrenaline coursing through his veins. He bolted across the hall, drawing enemy fire as Ruco pulled the pin on the flashbang. With a swift throw, the grenade landed near the guards. A blinding burst of light erupted, followed by muffled shouts.

"Move, move!" Ruco shouted. The squad surged forward, their rifles spitting fire as they cleared the hall and stormed into the control room.

"We're in," Ruco reported, his tone clipped but triumphant.

"Copy that," Lavex responded. "Prep the fleet for another round of bombing," he ordered his crew. The spaceships circled back, engines roaring as they lined up for their next strike.

Inside the control room, one of the soldiers dropped into a chair, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "Shutting down the turrets now," he announced, beads of sweat glistening on his forehead.

Outside, the fleet began its descent. Lavex's voice came through the intercom once more. "You better hurry up. We're burning fuel and patience," he warned.

The soldier's fingers paused as a warning flashed on the monitor: Unauthorized Access Detected. Lockdown Imminent. The alarm blared, and the room bathed in a sinister red light.

"They're locking us out!" the soldier shouted, panic creeping into his voice.

Ruco slammed a fist against the wall. "Damn it. Switch to manual override. The turrets need to go down, now!"

The alarm blared through the control room, its piercing sound cutting through the chaos outside. Ruco turned sharply to the soldier at the terminal, who typed furiously, his eyes darting across the screen.

"Manual override engaged," the soldier muttered, his voice tight with concentration. "I just need a few more seconds to bypass the firewall."

"We don't have a few seconds!" Ruco snapped, his voice tense as the pounding of boots echoed down the hallway. He swung his rifle to cover the door. "Incoming!"

The squad scrambled into defensive positions as the first wave of guards burst into the room. Shouts and gunfire erupted, bullets sparking off consoles and ricocheting against the walls.

"Get it done, now!" Ruco barked at the soldier, who grimaced but kept typing under the mounting pressure.

Outside, Lavex's fleet circled the airbase. From his cockpit, Lavex watched the earlier bombing runs ignite pockets of fire and smoke across the base. But the anti-aircraft fire continued relentlessly, streaking through the sky and narrowly missing his ships.

"Ruco, status?" Lavex demanded through the intercom.

Ruco ducked behind cover, reloading his weapon. "Give us thirty seconds!"

"We don't have thirty seconds!" Lavex yelled back. "Those guns stay up, and we're all dead!"

Back in the control room, the soldier gave a shaky thumbs-up. "Override complete! Turrets are offline!"

Ruco's squad let out a brief cheer before another wave of guards stormed in. Gunfire erupted again, but Ruco's team fought back fiercely, securing the room.

"We're clear," Ruco said, catching his breath. He turned to his team as they began planting explosives on the consoles.

Meanwhile, Lavex monitored the skies. His fleet had gained the upper hand in the dogfight, but enemy reinforcements surged from the hangars below.

"Dammit!" Lavex shouted, weaving through enemy fire. "We can't keep this up. We need those aircraft destroyed before The General and Zaulkom escape!"

As the squad exited the control room, the explosion rocked the building. Debris and smoke filled the air as Ruco's team took cover outside.

"Perhaps we overdid it," Ruco muttered, brushing off the dust. He activated his comms. "Lavex, the defenses are down, but we've run out of explosives for the remaining aircraft."

"Then find another way!" Lavex barked.

Ruco turned to his team. "How much do we have left?"

"Enough for one more room, sir," a soldier replied.

"We need to hit something bigger. The arsenal room—do they have anti-aircraft weapons?" Ruco asked.

"Yes, sir," another soldier confirmed.

"Good. We'll take what we need and support Lavex from the ground." Ruco gave the order, then hesitated, glancing down the corridor toward Thaurex's last position. Something about that direction pulled at him.

"You guys head to the arsenal. I'll catch up," Ruco said, sprinting toward the Black Vault.

What Ruco stumbled upon made him freeze. Bodies of enemy soldiers lay sprawled across the hallway, leading to the Black Vault. Thaurex stood at the end, drenched in blood, his rifle still smoking. His once-white hair was streaked with crimson, his gaze locked on the imposing doors ahead.

"Thaurex," Ruco called cautiously, breaking the silence.

Thaurex didn't look back. His voice was cold, trembling with anger. "This is it. The heart of Umbra Keep. Behind that door is everything—corruption, experiments… Falethier."

Ruco stepped closer, his boots crunching over broken glass and debris. "And you're just going to walk in?"

Thaurex didn't answer. Instead, he produced two keycards and a severed finger. His hands trembled as he approached the keypad. The first card scanned green. The second followed suit. When he pressed the finger to the scanner, it blinked red.

"Error," the device stated.

Thaurex froze, his body rigid with frustration. He slammed a fist against the doorframe, his breath quickening.

Ruco placed a firm hand on Thaurex's shoulder. "Take it easy," Ruco said calmly. "You've made it this far. Falethier's behind that door—she's not going anywhere. You've got this."

Thaurex turned, meeting Ruco's steady gaze. After a long exhale, he nodded, a faint smile of relief crossing his bloodied face.

He placed the finger on the scanner again. This time, the keypad illuminated green, and a deafening buzzer echoed through the hall. Slowly, the Black Vault's reinforced doors began to open, revealing the secrets inside.

Side by side, Ruco and Thaurex stood in awe, taking in the enormity of what lay beyond.
