The Asshai's Bloodmage

Chapter 71: Letters

After finally understanding what Masters are, I was left in doubt about which skills classify a Blood Mage as a master. Or is it not a skill but some kind of knowledge? An achievement? I'll investigate this later, maybe Omar has discovered something, there are still 2 hours until lunch, but I decide to go back to the tavern I stayed at to read my letters and have lunch. I dismiss Salim until after lunch and are finally seated in a private room in the tavern.

I take out the two letters that my father sent, in the first he says that he arrived safely in Dragonstone and that he would be looking for a place to settle in the next few days. The second letter was sent a month after he got there and said how he had found a house at a good price and his shop is next to it, he was now looking for suppliers and builders, he also said that he had seen Daenys' Dragon and how fascinated he was by her appearance. At no point did he talk about having problems, but I knew that if he was having any he wouldn't complain. Then I took out paper, pen and ink and started writing. I told him that I arrived safely and that now was the second day... I described the fights at sea, the cities we passed through, our second ship, and even about the crew who died. I asked if he knew anything, or any clues about my mother's origins, I didn't give details, but I said that when I went to reforge the sword I realized that it was much more valuable than we had realized... When I arrived in Asshai I described the city in detail, but I didn't talk about the magic.

I also said that I decided to open a store together with Omar and Zhang, and that this afternoon I would be looking for a place to live. After that, I said that I would send some items from Asshai for him to resell in his store through Henry, and that I would also add the address of where I will live before sending the letter at night or early tomorrow. After finishing the letter, I started reading the others and there were more than ten. One of the letters was something I expected. The leader of Qarth thanked me for my advice, he said he would send a gift as thanks. And that my ships would always have priority when passing through the city. Most of the remaining letters were from survivors who heard that the Red Sage was coming to Asshai and told of their survival thanks to me, there were also two aristocratic merchants from Asshai who invited me to their residences in case I didn't have a place to stay and they also offered many other benefits if I decide to stay in the city.

I decided to thank them both for their hospitality by writing two more letters, but I said that I already had a place to stay and I also had many people who depended on me. Then my eyes turned to the remaining 3 letters, outside the envelopes I could see the names of whoever sent them and I left them for last. Thanks to Salim's information I decided to first read the letter from the "only" honorable man in the city. Yes, Master White Shadow had sent a letter to me:

"Esteemed Red Sage, first allow me to welcome you to Asshai, news of your deeds was spread across the world and I couldn't help but hear that you were coming to the city of shadows. The reason for contacting you is to ask you a question and also alert you. Many are suspecting that you may be the current Green Seer, I would like to confirm this information, but even if you are not him, you are also suspected of being associated with him, if you are receiving it. your visions. You must be careful in both cases, as other than the Green Seer there are no people with such powerful abilities to see the future, or who can try to use you to get to the current Green Seer.

Sincerely Master White Shadow."

I reflect for a moment, then take out another sheet of paper and start writing again.

"Greetings Master White Shadow, I have barely arrived in the city and I have already heard your name. I also had the pleasure of meeting your apprentice Natasha this morning. I fear to disappoint you, but I am not the Greenseer and I do not know who he may be, my visions no longer work either. I used a sort of scroll that I inherited from my family to allow me to see the future once, but the item is now gone, as are my abilities. I still have some incomplete information that can help me move in dangerous moments, but the more the future changes, the less valuable the vision I had becomes. I also have a secret method that uses mathematics to calculate probabilities, it is the best tool I have at the moment and that is what I used to help me discover such specific details of Valyria's doom. I can tell you that I did not foresee the disaster, I simply identified clues about some possible conspiracies where there were many suspects. I will give you more details when we meet in person if that is of interest to you.

Sincerely, Red Sage."

I already knew that fame would have its benefits and consequences. But I never imagined that I would be associated with the Green Seer, I hate people who can see the future... In the stories I read, these characters are always walking spoilers, I still remember a certain immortal who was too arrogant, trusting in his ability to see the future he never saw his own death in it, until the day he traveled to the past and died an idiotic death. He had never seen his death in the future because he would die at a time when he returned to the past. This taught me a valuable lesson about never trusting nonsense like destiny, that's why I won't put all my hopes in the breaker of chains and the bastard from the north.

I will create my own plan B to get through the terrors of the long night and if that doesn't help, I will create a plan C that only involves my survival and that of my loved ones. Speaking of the long night, the second letter is from a mysterious group called the followers of Bacalon the Pale Child. I've heard this name before while reading some theories about this world. The person who wrote me the letter was someone who identified himself as the Pope of this religion, not only that, but also one of the 100 Masters of the city.

This Master Priest welcomed me to the city and asked me to visit him as soon as I could. Not wanting to make enemies, especially with one of the most dangerous groups in this world, I gave him a simple answer thanking him for his invitation, but that I had little time to do many things in the city before starting my studies of magic. I also told him that I was not a Green Seer as most were thinking and that I had no ties to the current one. I even reinforced that I was willing to sign these words in a blood contract if anyone insisted on such slanderous words.

As soon as I finished the answer I took a deep breath because of the pressure that the second letter gave me, then I looked at the third:

"Welcome to Asshai Red Sage, I am the Pope and current lord of the Fire Temple of R'hllor of Asshai. Recently we have learned of your great heroic deeds... Not only have you saved many innocents from the doom of Valyria, but you have fought bravely and courageously at sea while defeating monsters and pirates and also using flames to purify them. Everyone now calls you by the title of Hero and even the new chosen one of the Lord of Light, many members of our temple long to meet you and we would like you to come visit us as soon as possible. It is our duty as devotees of the Lord of Light to keep young Heroes safe so that they may grow in safety and display their full potential. If you agree to join us, here is the list of benefits...

Sincerely, Master Priest Grym."

The list of benefits is enormous and almost seems like it would make me someone second only to the Pope himself. But I do not trust any religion. But I need to maintain a good relationship with them, or at least make it seem like I'm on good terms with them. I take out another sheet of paper and begin:

"Master Grym, I appreciate your welcome and your immense praise, but I believe I do not deserve it. I was lucky and did what anyone would have done in Valyria. Daenys the dreamer tried to warn everyone, but few believed in her dreams. In the end, the number of people I saved was just a drop in the ocean. Another thing that should be emphasized is that the flames I use in combat do not belong to me. They were an inheritance I received without making any effort, and I consider myself unworthy of them at the moment. I appreciate your invitation to join your temple, but at the moment I just want to study magic in peace without getting involved in too many problems. You will soon learn that I have no ties to the Green Seer and I was just lucky with a certain item and knowledge that I inherited. But I emphasize my respect for the Lord of Light and his mission. I will soon make a donation to the temple as a form of support… The night is dark and full of terrors.

Sincerely, Red Sage."

I smile as I read the end of the letter to Pope Grym. This should be enough for him to understand my side without forcing me too much. I will need their support if I have to fight the Temple of the Pale Child. All I need at the moment is to buy time, besides, the use of my flames has spread as well and if he knows this, the Temple of Bacalon knows it too. After reading, writing and putting the letters in envelopes. I finish the meal that was served while I was reading. I am eating the meal given to the guests of the tavern so that I can understand what the people of Asshai eat here. I have some very hard black bread, some fish broth that I use to dip the bread and make it easier to chew and lastly some black jerky that I suspect is some beast hunted in these lands. I make a note to ask about it later and leave with Salim again this time heading to the center of Asshai.
