Chapter 56: Pirates part 2
Jones "Bonebreaker" was a pirate of Ghiscari ancestry who was infamous in the outskirts of New Ghis. He had a secret agreement with the lord of New Ghis to never attack ships from the city, but he had carte blanche to attack any other ship that crossed the region. This agreement benefited and guaranteed a good number of slaves always entering the city for trade, and the lord of New Ghis earned a lot from this.
Therefore, his targets were always ships from more distant regions or merchant ships that came from Yi Ti, Asshai and other regions of the Jade Sea. His ship, the Giant Horn, a large sailing ship with 4 sails, had a large and fierce crew of 80 men, and he, as the Captain of this pirate ship, earned the nickname "Bonebreaker" due to his heavy weapon, a two-handed mace whose blows always crippled his victims.
Recently this rule of not attacking ships related to the Valyrian Empire was gone with the downfall of Valyria, the power of the region weakened and the survivors themselves had become pirates, Jones would not miss this opportunity, and began using his informants in the port of New Ghis to find targets for his piracy. And today a juicy target appeared! A large ship called the Sigh of Valyria, after a month of traveling to Asshai this sailboat accompanied by a smaller one did not buy any extra supplies other than water in New Ghis.
The crew of the Sigh of Valyria was estimated at only 30-40 men, the rest being just passengers. This was too juicy a target for Jones to resist. Of course, even if they had not stocked up on food in New Ghis, this could just mean that they were afraid of the possible local conflict, but Jones knew that with so many passengers and going to Asshai they should have plenty of good food on board and the passengers could have plenty of riches as well. So without thinking twice, Jones gathered his men and set sail to follow the ship.
"Captain, should we ask for support from the Three Horn alliance?"
After hearing the question from his first mate, Jones quickly refused. This pirate alliance had 3 captains who worked together to plunder ships in the region, just like Jones. Their ships were smaller, but they used their numbers well and were also infamous in the region. If they cooperated, they would have to split the cargo with them in half. Knowing that the enemy only had 40 men, Jones wanted to plunder everything alone.
Following his Captain's orders, the first mate gave the instructions and the ship set off in the wake of the Sigh of Valyria, which was now also accompanied by another smaller sailing ship. It only took 2 days before they spotted the larger and smaller ship. They quickly decided to board the larger one and ignore the smaller one as part of the strategy, but they would leave archers in position to attack the smaller ship if it got too close. Before they could reach the two ships, they saw them getting close enough to exchange something before moving away. Realizing what had happened, Jones deduced that there might now be more men on board the smaller ship or fewer.
They may have been planning to flank him while defending the main ship, or they had put everything on the main ship and the smaller one was a distraction. Unsure of how to act and having to gamble, he left 10 archers plus 8 men to deal with the smaller sailboat and the rest of the 62 men would attack the main ship. As he was giving his final instructions to his men a huge crash was heard and Jones saw one of his men impaled by an arrow as thick as his arm and at least 1 meter or more long pinning the already dead man to the thick wood of the deck. Jones' reaction was the same as his men's.
"WHAT THE FUCK!"
"LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THAT SPEAR!"
"HOW DID IT GET THROWN FROM SO FAR?"
"TAKE COVER QUICKLY."
His men were terrified, they all hid behind something, Jones wasted no time and soon hid behind the Captain's cabin as well. While he was thinking about what to do, another arrow/spear came and this time pierced the deck balcony plank and another man with it before also hitting one of the 4 masts. Luckily the arrow lost some of its power on the first impact or he believed it would have permanently damaged the mast.
The third giant arrow came, but this time it only hit an empty cabin and only stopped again after piercing two more walls of the ship. It seemed that the closer they got, the greater the firepower of the enormous arrows. The fourth arrow arrived, this time killing one man and wounding another. The fight had not even started and there were already 3 dead and 1 wounded. Another arrow hit again, this time hitting the observation point on top of one of the 4 masts, two men fell from up there, from such a high height and falling straight to the wooden floor Jones could only hear the sound of bones breaking and their groans.
The arrows didn't have a very good aim, but the ship had 80 men on deck, no matter where they landed, someone would always get hit. Soon two terrified men jumped into the sea trying to avoid death. When a third tried to do the same thing, Jones came out of the protection where he was and hit him in the head, cracking his skull and ending his life, making all the men give up on that idea.
"Captain, it's not too late to retreat, we can turn the sails and get out of firing range and attack at night."
When Jones thought about doing that, another man shouted:
"Captain, the smaller ship has already flanked us, it will be in range of the arrows in 30 seconds."
'Damn it! retreating now was no longer an option…' Jones thought.
"Archers, get ready to shoot at the smaller ship, we have a higher position, don't let them get on board, the rest of you, get ready for combat, we are almost in range of the Valyrian Sigh."
Two more bangs were heard and two giant arrows hit again, one luckily missed, but the other took another life. This took the attention of the archers who were at the stern of the ship preparing to shoot at the smaller ship.
Then the first volley of arrows came. Taking the lives of 5 of the 10 archers at the stern, and making the remaining 5 hide in fear. Soon another shot from the huge arrow came this time aiming at the archers who were ready to shoot at the Valyria's Sigh as cover.
Likewise, the rumble and fear took the attention of the archers causing the first arrows to come from the Sigh of Valyria, and the amount was not small, there were at least 20 arrows and 7 archers on Jones' side were hit, at that time when the rumble of the bow of Jones' ship hit the side of the bow of the Sigh of Valyria, it made both combatants who were standing stagger, but with Jones' shout they all attacked boarding the enemy ship.
***
At the same time, 10 men boarded the smaller ship and climbed up the stern of Jones' ship. Among these 10 men were Sir Arthur, 2 of his men, Rafael, Omar, and 5 of the new Ghiscaris recruits. Sir Arthur was the first to step aboard, the old knight slicing pirates like they were pieces of cake. His two men covered his flanks and behind him Omar fired a crossbow killing an archer who appeared on top of a cabin. Rafael with another crossbow shot another archer, before another volley led by Sir Arthur's 2 archers and the several 12-year-old boys fired from inside the smaller sailboat ending the lives of Jones' 5 remaining archers.
Omar and Rafael made their crossbows disappear into their pouches before new weapons appeared in their hands. In Omar's hands a flashy silver sword and in Rafael's hands another loaded crossbow. He aimed upwards towards the front of the ship and shot at the top of the third mast, taking down another archer. Omar reached Sir Arthur's side and soon Jones's 8 men at the stern of the ship were dead as well. They ran towards the port side where the ships were now side by side.
Rafael dropped the crossbow and now two pistols appeared in his hands. As he ran he looked to the left side and saw that one of the men had already ignored the battle and was trying to break down the door of one of the cabins. When he pointed one of his two pistols and was about to shoot, the cabin door was opened from the inside and Jhon's father threw a glass vial at the man who began to scream and agonize as his skin melted.
Seeing that they were safe, Rafael then continued running and looking for anyone who was in danger before seeing Jack slit the throat of one of the pirates and run towards another. Finally he saw someone in danger, one of the men in the bachelor's cabin was about to be killed. He was controlling the scorpion to help the crew defend themselves from the attack, but now he had a huge cut on the side of his arm. The pirate hadn't killed him yet because he was looking at the weapon that had terrorized his ship. Taking a deep breath, I aimed and fired.
The sound of the weapon alarmed all the pirates, but this time the crew on our side was not affected by the noise and even took advantage of the opportunity of the pirates' distraction, claiming a few more victims. The man I shot fell from the shot he took in the chest on top of the wounded single man. I looked back to the front to see that Arthur and Omar were already in combat in the main area of the deck, where the bloodiest battle was taking place. The pirates were now outnumbered, but there was a huge bearded Ghiscari man with a large, heavy mace. I saw him crush the chest of the only newly recruited Ghiscari man who remained on the ship helping Henry. I felt my blood boil with rage before aiming the second pistol at him and shooting. Since there were a lot of people in front of me, I aimed at his legs. The shot hit the big man's left leg, making him scream and kneel on the ground. Some pirates shouted "Captain" loudly, trying to get towards him. I was faster and crossed the crowd, placing the empty gun at his head and shouting loudly for everyone to hear:
"DROP YOUR WEAPONS OR I'LL BLOW HIS HEAD OFF!"
At that moment, all the pirates hesitated, standing still. They looked at the strange gun in my hand that was now glued to their Captain's head. Then I made the third pistol that the blacksmith had made for me in the last two days appear. While everyone looked at me, I aimed it at the head of one of the pirates who had not yet lowered his weapons.
"BANG!"
The man fell dead with a bloody hole in the middle of his forehead, and everyone was shocked by what had happened. I take advantage of the shock and scream again:
"I WILL NOT REPEAT IT!"
"LAY DOWN YOUR FUCKING WEAPONS!"
"Everyone put down your weapons." Jones says, as he also lowers his head.
When the pirate captain says this, everyone who was still resisting kneels down, dropping their weapons. I finally relax, but I sigh when I see the wounded and dead men of my crew.
