Aodhán woke to the reek of sulfur, ash, and steel.
His entire body ached, and it took his mind a moment to come into full awareness. When it did, he jerked upright immediately, eyes going wide as he tried to move his arms, only to find them bound with null chains.
The memory of the swirling portal surfaced, and Aodhán cursed himself for being so gullible. Ayisha's smile flashed through his mind—warm, trusting, false. She was a cultist, and he hadn't noticed. Worse still, he had let himself be captured like a fool.
To his right, Cyrus groaned beside him, not quite awake, and on the other side, Daruk lay, still unconscious. Ayisha, on the other hand, was nowhere to be found.
"Wake up, Daruk," Aodhán called out, panic rising as he nudged Daruk with his feet.

Daruk groaned and slowly opened his eyes. The moment his gaze landed on Aodhán, his eyes widened, and he jerked upright, head darting back and forth as he took in their surroundings. "Oh fuck, where are we?"
"I don't know either," Aodhán responded, but before he could continue, the clang of metal echoed out, and a moment later, a woman appeared, dressed head to toe in blood-red robes. The parts of her skin that were visible were a canvas of cruel-looking tattoos, each one seemingly a continuation of a single line. Her hair matched her robes, wild, red, and coiled like a flame.
She walked toward them with a smile, and when she reached them, she lowered herself to eye level. Her gaze roamed all three of them once before landing on Aodhán.
"You must be Aodhán Brystion," she noted calmly. "The hunter of the Children."
Aodhán shivered from the bloodlust emanating from her, but didn't lower his gaze. "Who are you?"
The woman's smile stretched into a predatory grin. "I am Isobá, and my master has been waiting ever so patiently to see you. Welcome to the Order of the Watch, Aodhán. Your judgment begins now."
