Chapter 84: Screaming Giant

The ground shook, and nearby leaves started to fall. The entire forest was shaking as the shriek was loud and clear. Quagmire, unable to take the sound, covered his ears, and with a slight twist of the head, followed by the entire body, he turned around and looked for the source of the sound. Once he had found the source of the sound, he was left speechless with his mouth agape.

He has encountered another kind of ghoul, it was gigantic, similar to a fat man, but with a certain difference that differentiates it from those of the fat men, just like the fat diggers. They dig, this one screams, as if calling nearby ghouls. Yes, it was indeed calling nearby ghouls. As Quagmire realized this, he immediately brought his rifle forward.

He slightly lowered his head to aim, and if his guess was right, the bolt action was the right gun, if its skull was as thick as the fat men, considering its size, and differences perhaps it might even be stronger than those of the fat men. Thus, with a quick flick of a finger, a bullet came at a blistering speed, as a spark of light came followed by a smoke and slight trail of the bullet path as it pierces through the air.

The bullet came and struck its target; the giant staggered but was able to remain standing, and with a growl, it started to once again scream. However, before Quagmire even allowed it to happen, a second shot followed, which struck the same place with a minor difference in the place where it hits.

The skull seemed to have cracked as the second bullet penetrated through, eventually silencing the screaming giant for eternity. However, it was already too late, as the entire forest was now rumbling around him.

Numerous thoughts raced in his mind, he could escape, unfortunately it was too close to his base, and he does not want his base to be disturbed or to sustain damages from mere ghouls, it must continue industrializing unopposed so that he could reap the benefits as soon as possible. He cannot forget the main reason he was there, he needs gold coins, so that he may be able to buy more blueprints, improving his situation, and once he studies more materials, he would be able to create blueprints independently with the knowledge he possesses, but right now it is highly unlikely.

As soon as he is independent, the better for him.

He jumped from branch to branch, as he opted to stay atop the trees, as it provided him enough cover, especially from the ghouls below, which he could pick off from time to time, and the barrier the shade provides, which could block sight from the sky. If he ever gets threatened, he could just jump over and run.

Now he waited, and when he saw a ghoul rushing over, he immediately aimed his rifle and fired. The ghoul was struck and fell down; it was then followed by another ghoul who saw where he was. He aimed and shot, unfortunately he missed, quite possibly the first miss he had done, but he aimed his second shot and fired. It was a bullseye and another part of the forest was painted with the blood of the ghouls.

Upon shooting the second one, a flapping sound reverberated, he peeked through the shade and saw a flying man eater scanning it surroundings. So before his location could be seen, he aimed and pulled the trigger, the man eater was struck mid air and fell backwards, plummeting to the ground and making a loud crash as it struck a tree.

He glanced from side to side, closely guarding the location from which he saw the screaming giant earlier. Upon waiting for a while a fat man showed up. However, the fat man was confused as it arrived to a dead giant, and so it started looking for the cause. Unfortunately, Quagmire was faster, as he already dispatched a bullet and once he was out of bullets he grabbed another clip after defeating a few more ghouls that followed the fat man.

Bodies were piling up in the forest as he repeatedly dispatched one after another. However, the true challenge arrived, when a giant quite possibly a platoon of ghouls arrived, and upon with the headcount, it could easily surpass fifty ghouls judging solely by the thickness and width of group.

Not only that, the group of ghouls have a various amount of armaments, but no armour, but they have tattered clothes. They possess a wide variety, from bows, swords to axes and spears. It seemed it might be his toughest battle yet, and so, taking no chances, he immediately unloaded all of his eight bullets and grabbed another clip.

The front of the ghouls was pummeled with bullets, taking six ghouls down, and missing two. The leading ghoul was killed, and so a new ghoul took its place from its ranks, quite possibly the next one in command. It then started speaking in its own language, however Quagmire could not quite hear it.

As if he would let them, as the bullet feed was once again filled, and the clip stashed away, he immediately dispatched all eight bullets, pulling and pushing back the bolt, as the bullet casings repeatedly fall to the ground, waste it was, he would pick it up later, and those he missed.

Numerous ghouls were hit, they were now starting to panic, as their new commander was killed too, and so was another of lower rank took its place, they searched frantically, and when their eyes lay upon Quagmires location, the first ghoul that saw it screamed and shouted for its allies, before being shot.

Unfortunately for Quagmire, the platoon of ghouls had already seen where the ghoul from earlier was pointing, and with quick and precise steps, they immediately dashed off in his direction. Quagmire, knowing now that he was exposed, came down from the tree as he would try to shake them off, as there were so many ghouls, it was only a matter of time before they were able to climb, and so he had to come down and take the initiative.
