Chapter 8: Defiance; Howling at fate
Chloe's POV
I strode away from the hall with my mind racing with conflicting thoughts. I couldn't deny it, the scent of my newfound mate lingered in my nostrils against my wish.
I would prefer it to just go away.
"Our mate..." My wolf whined in protest. I knew that scent was making her to not think straight.
"Haven't we been fine without him all this while? We don't need him." I said to my wolf chidingly.
"We should be with mate." My wolf insisted stubbornly.
"We don't need someone like him. Someone that weak is of no benefit to us. I believe you haven't forgotten the wolf of whom you are. Whose wolf are you again?" I asked the animal residing in me, dramatically.
I realized I was being dramatic but I would go lower if that would make her listen to me and not sing to me all day about one weak mate.
"Chloe's, the most powerful, fierce and ruthless female Alpha currently ruling the werewolf community." My wolf replied to me reluctantly.
"Good. Then you should know that you can't be weak. You can't be tied by the bond, foolishly. The bond shouldn't make you stop being fierce, do you understand. I know it will be hard but you have to do it. For me. For our cause." I explained carefully to my wolf, reminding her of the great cause.
"If that is what you want." My wolf replied to me. Even though I could detect a hint of reluctance in her voice, I I was sure she would obey me.
"That is what I want. We won't take an Omega for a mate." I said firmly making her know my stance because I was sure that would never change.
"Alpha, is everything alright?" Ethan's concerned voice broke through my tumultuous thoughts.
I paused and immediately blocked off my wolf so I could concentrate on other things.
"Everything is fine." I replied to Ethan dismissively without bothering to spare him a glance as the warriors trailed behind me.
I was certain they would be puzzled by my uncharacteristic behavior back then in the hall.
"You all should go to your various homes and relax. We are done for today." I dismissed them without looking back. At my statement, they stopped walking behind me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My hands were clenched into fists as I headed for my manor. I entered the room and for a moment, I didn't know what to do. So, I just paced my bedroom.
"Really? An Omega? And from the defeated pack, no less?" I mumbled under my breath as I thought it again.
"My pride and position as an Alpha won't allow this. This is a cruel joke." I murmured, shaking my head.
My spacious room suddenly felt too small, too confining. I needed air, space to think. With a frustrated growl, I yanked open the balcony doors and stepped out into the cool evening air.
"Greetings, Alpha. Do you need anything?" A servant cleaning the balcony greeted me and inquired, a hint of fear in his voice.
I knew he was surprised to see me there like that and that seemed to shaken him.
"Leave. I want to be alone." I told him dismissively and he hurried out.
I heaved a sigh and looked at nature which was staring back at me. The sun was setting, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, and I let my mind got carried away, admiring the beauty.
"Alpha... I hope I am not interrupting anything?" I heard a familiar voice said hesitantly from the other entrance.
"Just watching how beautiful the sun is, this evening..." I replied, not bothering to look at the owner of the voice. I knew who it was.
"So, Beta Liam, what brings you here? Shouldn't you be in your house relaxing as I have ordered the other warriors, if you have finished the task I assigned to you?" I asked him, my gaze still fixed at the sunset.
"I am actually in the middle of executing my task, but I have to confirm something." Liam said to me.
"Okay, what is that?" I inquired and finally faced him. I raised my eyebrows at his expression-- he had a small smile on his face, one that had a tint of mischief.
"What?" I asked him, impatiently. I had thought what he wanted to say would be about the task I gave him but it seemed that wasn't the case.
"So, are you not going to tell me anything?" Liam asked me. His question was somewhat confusing, given that he had said he wanted to confirm something. A small frown made its way onto my face.
"You know I don't like that..." I replied to him. He knew what I meant.
"Okay, fine. I am actually here to confirm where you would want me to arrange for your mate." He said, finally cutting to the chase.
My lips parted slightly. I was shocked by his statement--- that he knew what I thought nobody noticed. But knowing Liam, I wasn't too surprised. He always knew too much.
"My mate? When did I tell you that I have found my mate?" I retorted sharply, trying to play cluelessness.
Liam's small smile grew bigger.
"I saw it, Chloe." Liam informed me, his voice casual but the amused smile was still plastered on his face.
"What do you mean?" I insisted on not knowing what he was talking about. Of course, I wouldn't give him the satisfaction that he was always right, all the time.
"Chloe, stop denying it. I saw your face when you looked at that Omega." He maintained, the amused smile never leaving his face.
At that, I suddenly felt a flash of panic.
"Was I that transparent?" I panicked inwardly.
"Nothing happened, I was just... surprised by his audacity to look me in the eye." I insisted and pressed my lips into a thin line.
Liam's lips twitched in a suppressed smile.
"Uh-huh. And that's why you've been pacing your room and talking to yourself for the past hour? Chloe, you know I know you, so stop denying." He said, sounding tired of the going back and forth.
I blinked and heaved a defeated sigh.
"Okay, fine. You have caught me again. I get it now that there is no how I can hide from you." I said and shrugged nonchalantly. He let out a chuckle.
"Right." He said, smiling.
"Fine but you don't have to prepare anywhere for him, other than the place where other captives are being kept." I stated firmly.
Liam's eyes widened in surprise.
"At that dungeon-like hall? Chloe, you can't treat your mate like that." He protested wildly.
"I can and I will. More so, he is not my mate. The moon goddess might have paired us together but I won't accept that fate. I am Chloe Wilder, the ruthless female Alpha, a force to reckon with in the whole of werewolf community. I won't accept such joke of a fate." I maintained, my voice sharp and firm.
"Chloe!" Liam mumbled, sounding and looking shocked.
"That is it, Liam. So, he is nothing but one of the captives who will be with the others. No special treatment, nothing!" I added, firmly. At that moment, my countenance was cold and unflinching.
That was simply who I was.
For a moment, Liam stood transfixed, lips slightly parted and his gaze fixed on his with disbelief. Afterwards, he gradually recovered from the shock and cleared his throat.
"Well, I guess you would want to know this..." He trailed off waiting for my response.
"What?" I gritted my teeth.
