Chapter 107- The Senate (6)
While Marcus and Grey took on the most troublesome ones, the other knights and squires orderly surrounded the enemies.
Inside the Senate, the crowd was fazed by the sudden rumbling of thunder. As almost all of them were non combatants, they did not realise what was going on outside.
"Thunder? But the Thunder Knights Brigade shouldn't be in the capital today."
Marquis Herman furrowed his brows, using his senses to detect what was going on outside. At that very second, his aura exploded out in the image of a fearsome majestic lion; the person disappeared from his seat.
At the same time, the door to the hall was pushed open.
The Royal Lion Guards acting as the escorts for the senate today, immediately sprang into action, attacking the intruder.
CLANG…swords clashed, shaking the very senate and sending forth wild gales. Cracks appeared on the walls and floor of the building, causing many of the members to hide behind their desks pathetically.
As one would expect of level 8 knights, just some casual exchange of swords caused this giant building to almost buckle.
"Thanks for the save Commander."
Bob spoke while holding the blades of the two Royal Lion Knights back. Behind was a tall man with golden hair and a large physique. Needless to say, it was Reinhardt.
At some point, he had moved from the trial stand and was now blocking the sword of the commander of the Royal Lion Knights with his bare hands. Sparks generated as the two commanders faced off.
"Hey now, you can't just attack a member of my squad".
Marquis Herman narrowed his eyes "This is a senate, and that man intruded here with his weapon. I don't think I am in the wrong here".
Reinhardt scratched his hair and sighed "Well, you are right. However, I had no choice, I had to bring this guy here no matter what."
He pointed at the Baron Chetak and asked Bob to lower his weapon. It was only after that that Marquis Herman withdrew his weapon.
"Tsk, if you are a noble, act with more finesse." Clicking his tongue, he moved away.
Reinhardt gave a helpless smile. This guy was not actually his enemy. In fact, as one of the commanders of the seven great knight orders, he was a dependable ally with whom he had completed quite a few expeditions in the tainted lands.
It was just that he was a bit of a stuck up. A staunch elitist stuck to the old ways of the nobles. As a result, he wants everyone with even a trace of noble blood to act like one. Especially Reinhardt, since the latter was heir to the Duke household, which made him the next duke and above in status.
While the other nobles condemned him during the senate, he continued to keep his mouth shut and only spoke when the subject was of importance, all the while grimacing at how the other nobles were behaving.
Once Marquis Herman moved away, the knights of his order followed his actions and unsheathed their weapons.
With the tension gone, the Senate continued. Nobles peeked their head out of the desk and looked at the new face that was brought, or more like dragged into the hall.
"Baron Chetak?!!" The nobles instantly recognised the person even while gaged and looking a little starved.
"What is the meaning of this? So it was true that you kidnapped Chetak. Release him immediately".
The noble who tried to interrupt Reinhardt earlier and condemn his action on Baron Chetak's territory shouted. His face looked pale and visibly distressed.
"Didn't you say that I was lying earlier? I brought him, the person involved as proof."
Saying that, he gestured Bob to free Baron Chetak's mouth.
"You Majesty. This is a senate, what Reinhardt is doing is clearly violating the laws."
That noble once again tried to intervene, this time appealing to the king. Unfortunately for him, even the king looked interested in what was going on.
"That may be so. However, now that he has brought Chetak here, let's hear it from their mouth. After all, slavery was banned by my wife. If there is someone who dares to disobey the law she created, then there is no need for such a person in my kingdom".
The king's words only caused the noble's face to become more ashen.
In the trial stand, once Baron Chetak was free from the gag, he started pleading for his life and asking for mercy.
"P-Please don't kill me. I was wrong, I shouldn't have kidnapped the demi humans from your territory. I didn't know that you cared for them so much… p-please…"
Reinhardt didn't even have to do anything as the person immediately confessed to one of his crimes. It looks like the torture he was subjected to by Karina and the guards of his family worked wonders.
"Tell me, why did you kidnap the demi humans and for what reason?"
"Y-yes, I'll tell you everything. It's because the demi humans' worth as a slave is much higher than humans. Especially females, depending on their age, they can be sold for a lot. I kidnapped the demi human that I learned you brought into your territory through my channels to kidnap some of them. I thought that since they are just demi humans, you wouldn't mind. P-Please don't kill me".
The council members were shocked; the truth was just like what Reinhardt told them. He was not abusing his powers or anything; he was simply exacting the Reckoning Trial. If anything, it was Baron Chetak who made the first move.
Reinhardt continued his interrogation "Where and who were you selling them to? Tell me the name of the ones involved in this trade".
"This…" Baron Chetak hesitated for a while, but after seeing that there was no choice for him, no matter what he did, he confessed to all of his crimes.
"I planned on selling them on the Underground Slave market of my city. There are many clients willing to buy demi human slaves. Among them is Count Ares".
