Chapter 9: Chapter 9: An Ominous Encounter
Ryo woke up feeling refreshed yet uneasy. The lingering weight of the Status Window from last night was still at the back of his mind. As he got out of bed, the events of the past day flashed before him—his inexplicable regressions, newly unlocked abilities, and the strange girl with crimson eyes.
'What the hell is happening to me?' he thought as he stretched.
Before heading out, he decided to call his parents. He hadn't spoken to them since arriving at the academy, and he wanted to assure them that he was fine. Keeping his voice steady, he avoided mentioning anything about his newfound abilities, the peculiarities of the academy, or the fact that someone had just declared him as their fiancé. He especially left out the part about having to meet her father soon. Instead, he kept the conversation light, telling them that classes would officially begin today and that he was adjusting well. His parents seemed relieved and wished him luck, ending the call on a warm note.
Putting aside his lingering thoughts, he changed into the academy uniform, and headed toward the cafeteria for breakfast. The academy hallways were bustling with students, some engaged in deep conversations, others moving hurriedly toward
their destinations. Ryo blended in, despite his increasing sense of detachment from everything around him.
The moment he entered the cafeteria, a familiar voice called out to him.
"You took your time waking up," the girl with silver-red hair and crimson eyes said, standing beside an empty seat.
Ryo tensed for a moment before schooling his expression into one of mild curiosity. He still didn't know who she was, but something about her felt dangerous and intriguing at the same time.
"I guess I needed the rest," he replied nonchalantly, taking a seat across from her. The other students seemed to give her a respectful distance, which only made him more curious about her identity.
"Did you sleep well?" she asked, her crimson eyes studying him intently.
Ryo hesitated. "Well enough."
She smiled, but there was something unreadable in her expression. "That's good. You'll need the energy for today's lessons. Also, you should start preparing yourself."
Ryo frowned slightly. "Preparing for what?"
Her smile widened slightly. "To meet my father, of course. Now that you're my fiancé, it's only natural."
Ryo nearly choked on his food. "Fiancé?!"
"Yes. I declared it yesterday, and you didn't object," she said smoothly, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
Ryo rubbed his temples, feeling an impending headache. "You can't just declare something like that on your own."
She tilted her head. "Why not? My father will expect to see you soon, so don't keep him waiting too long."
Before he could press further, the food was served. He decided not to pry—for now. If she was important, he would eventually figure out her identity.
As they ate in silence, Ryo's mind drifted back to the Status Window and the new abilities he had unlocked. He needed to test them soon, but without drawing attention. Blood Puppetry? Hemokinesis? What exactly did they do? The names alone suggested terrifying potential.
After finishing his meal, Ryo stood up to leave, only for the girl to suddenly lean closer. "Be careful today, Ryo Takashi."
He froze, his eyes narrowing. "You know my name."
"Of course," she replied smoothly. "Everyone will, soon enough."
And just like that, she walked away, leaving Ryo with even more questions than before.
The first class of the day was History of Supernatural Races. Students filed into a vast lecture hall, where a tall, robed professor stood at the front. Ryo found a seat in the middle row, still distracted by his earlier conversation.
"Welcome, students, to the first session of this course. As many of you know, our world is shaped by the interactions of countless races—humans, elves, vampires, dragons, demons, and more. Understanding their histories will help you understand your place within it."
As the professor spoke, Ryo tried to focus. He needed to gather information about this world, its powers, and more importantly—his own place in it. But before he could fully settle in, he felt a chill crawl up his spine.
Someone was watching him.
He turned his head slightly, scanning the room. At the far side of the hall, partially hidden in the shadows, a pair of deep violet eyes met his.
A sudden, unexplainable sense of danger flooded through him. His heart pounded, instincts screaming at him that this person was not normal.
The moment he blinked, the figure was gone.
Ryo exhaled slowly, his grip tightening on the edge of his desk. 'What the hell was that…?'
For the first time since his regression, he felt something that truly unsettled him.
An omen of something far more dangerous lurking in the shadows.
