So, picture this: I was totally engrossed in Lydia's words, when suddenly the lights went out and I'm not talking about a power outage.

My neuro-system was under attack by some infection, which I kinda suspected already as my hearing had been off the charts since this morning.

Must've been my adrenaline gland on overdrive trying to fend off the infection, rendering my trusty Adderall ineffective.

Well here I am, experiencing some major shock. The first symptom? A blackout, followed by nerve shut down and paralysis.

If I don't get help within two hours, well, let's just say it won't be a good time for me.

Who knew dying from an animal bite was a possibility?

I mean snake bites, sure.

But some weird Bear-Wolf thingy? No thanks.

I guess I need to update my list of ways to die.

"Wakamono." A deep voice boomed from the darkness. It was like Batman himself was speaking. "Konton, zetsubō, kurushimi, itami, anata wa sorera subete o motarashimasu."

I was jolted awake as a piercing sound drilled into my ears.

Coach was blowing his whistle, causing my head to ring. I clapped my gloved hands over my ears but the shrill sound cut through the layers of leather and cotton batting, stinging my eardrums.

I looked up and Scott was in the same boat, groaning in pain and holding his helmet. He was so distracted that he didn't even see the ball heading his way.

It smacked him right in the face, snapping him out of his trance, as he fell to the floor, laughter filled the ground.

I shook my head as I looked around finding almost all the members of the team grinning mischievously as Scott got ready once again.

The next moment Danny ran forward and flinged his stick while Scott simply swooped the net to his left and caught the ball without making any effort.

"Oh!" I looked in surprise and so did half the team, while the other half was considering it luck, even Scott was looking at the net in shock, unable to believe that he caught the ball.

Next was Issac and he was one of the agile players in the team, he took the ball into the crib of the stick and began to run sideways, which would give him a bit more power at the throw but that didn't bother Scott, he caught the ball once more, stunning us all, it looked like he suddenly became a master goalie, a position he never played before.

The people in the bleachers began to cheer for him as he kept catching the ball one after the other, even the coach looked stumped by it.

He didn't leave a single goal as the team kept throwing the balls at him one by one. I was so shocked by his performance that I forgot I had a blackout moments ago.

Finally Jackson was unable to take it anymore and stepped up, the ground went silent as they felt the tension.

As much as I hate to praise the Jerk, Jackson was one of the best attackers of the team and last year he won the best player award for the most goals scored.

The tension began to rise as Jackson took the ball in the cradle and started his run-up, he did a diagonal run before hopping up in the air, his stick pulled back and with a wip, he launched the ball straight towards the goal.

Even Danny would have struggled with that throw as I saw the ball swing a bit left.

It all happened so slow in my eyes, the ball was definitely headed towards the right upper corner and it was fast but Scott was faster, he reached out to the corner even before the ball changed directions and stretched his net.

He caught the throw without any problem and the whole ground erupted in cheer.

—--

I deliberately shuffled my feet as I leaped across the stream, causing water to go flying in a very satisfying way and I was laughing. Like, literally cackling like a damn hyena, my voice echoing through the sparse woods.

"...And did you see the look on Jackson's face?!" I asked, for the sixth or seventh time. "Holy crap, he looked like he'd just given birth to a porcupine, breech presentation. That was awesome."

"I don't know what it was." Scott admitted, his eyes trailing into the wood. "It was like I had all the time in the world to catch the ball."

"You did huh?" I asked, gnawing my lower lips.

So he felt it too, the sudden increase in his agility and reflex, we are both experiencing something that I have never heard of, I have studied about some interesting types of diseases on the web and none gives you superpowers, this doesn't have any form of scientific reasoning to it.

"Yeah, like everything was in slow-mo and that's not the only weird thing."

"Well what else?" I asked, totally intrigued by his words.

"I'm hearing things I shouldn't be able to hear," he confessed, scuffing a bit at the dead leaves under his feet. "Smell things."

"Smell things huh." Yes, it's the exact same thing that's happening to me.

"Yeah, like the ax body spray you are wearing." He teased.

"Shut up." I ruffled his hair and walked ahead, a bunch of thoughts going through my mind.

We were both bitten by the same animal and we both are experiencing the same set of symptoms, the common denominator here is the animal, I need to do some heavy research to find whatever the hell it was.

Maybe it's like a radioactive wolf? It escaped from the compound and bit us, giving us wolf-like powers.

Should I call myself Wolf-man and become a ripoff version of Batman? I mean it would be perfect, I can be Wolf-Man and Scott can be my sidekick, Rob-Wolf.

"This is what I have been trying to tell you, Scott." I grumbled. I have been trying to tell him this since lunch but he wouldn't just listen.

"In the hall with Lydia, the whistle from the coach."

"Maybe something is wrong with us." Scott said, kicking up the leaves trying to find his inhaler. "What if it's, like, an infection? Like our body's flooding with adrenaline before we go into shock or something?"

"Already thought of that. I even felt I blacked out for a second on the ground." I added, Scott immediately turned around with his eyes widened.

"What?! Dude! you alright?"

"Yeah, it just felt like an extended blink." I shrugged. He relaxed a bit and kept walking into the forest.

"And It's been almost two hours since the twenty four hour mark ended, no way we'd go into shock now."

We went silent for a moment with both of us having nothing to speak as we were both confused as to what exactly was causing this.

Suddenly a silly thought struck and I decided to tease Scott.

"You know what? Maybe you're right. I actually think I've heard of this," I said, standing up straight and snapping my fingers, like I had just figured it out. "It's a specific kind of infection."

"What? What's it called?" Scott blinked, his jaw dropping a little at my revelation.

"Yeah! Yeah, I think it's called lycanthropy."

That got another adorably confused expression out of Scott because that sounded legit enough to be serious.

Scott never was a student of the classics, after all.

Hell, Scott was barely a student of the moderns.

Hell, Scott was barely a student, his head was more into lacrosse than studies.

"What's that? Is that bad?"

"Oh, yeah, it's the worst."

Scott's expression fell and I could literally hear his heartbeat speed up.

Holy crap, I really did have him going and I almost felt bad for it. Almost.

"But only once a month."

"Once a month?"

"Mmmhmm, on the night of the full moon." And then I smirked, tilting my head back and howled softly, like a wolf.

Scott's expression went from worried and horrified to fed up in a split second, his heartbeat calming back down.

I burst out laughing as Scott shoved hard at my shoulder.

"You asshole!" He went back to looking for his inhaler, as I tried to catch my breath.

"Hey, think about it, all this started with a bite from a beast that looked like Wolf but was not a wolf, then we heard the wolf howling, the chances of us being werewolves are seriously up there." I insisted, jumping up and pouncing on Scott's back. "Maybe we are werewolves!"

I knew this could be one of the better possibilities, considering the sudden urges to kill I have been experiencing all day and the confidential full moon on Friday, it becomes more convincing but the fact still remains that Werewolves are nothing more than myth, a legend of old times, surely a lot of people would have known about their existence if they were real.

I'm going to stick with the radioactive wolf theory.

"There could be something seriously wrong with us!" Scott insisted, shoving me off again and giving a light tug on my arm.

"But there is! We are cursed, Scottie! Doomed to a life of dark servitude to the moon! Hide the maidens in the village or we'll steal them away and ravage them, before curfew, of course. My dad would kill me if I was out after eleven."

"Shut up!"

"We should go to shop class, melt all the silver we can find and make a chain to tie us up. Friday's a full moon, after all."

"You're a terrible friend and I hate you." Scott was giving back as good as I got, although he had to get up awfully early to keep up with me on a good day.

Scott yanked his hand free and hiked up a little hill and then he gave a triumphant little squawk. "This is it! This is where we ran and saw the body. I think."

"But there is nobody." I noticed as I saw the leaves with dried up blood. "Maybe the killer moved the body or the beast ate it."

"Ew." Scott grossed out and knelt down as he began to shuffle the grass. "Help me look for my inhaler."

"And my flashlight, don't forget."

"My inhaler is like, eighty bucks!"

"So's my flashlight!"

"Dude, no way…"

We were so busy bickering that we didn't hear the man moving through the forest to meet us.

I was the one to glance up first and I jerked into a standing position, whacking Scott on the shoulder to get his attention.

Both of us were on our feet a second later, facing down the incredibly dark, incredibly intimidating figure in black leather, standing not twenty feet away. I heard Scott gulp but other than that, we stood their ground.

Not in fear but in anticipation.

Great. Half a body goes missing in the forest, and here's a short, dark and gruesome man, lurking up behind us.

Not suspicious at all, wow and now he's walking toward us.

"What are you doing here?" The man asked, frowning at me in particular. "Huh? This is private property."

"Uh, sorry man, we didn't know," I answered for both of us and that's when I recognized him and it was my turn to gulp a little.

"Yeah, we were just looking for something, but…" Scott tried to finish and then flinched back when he turned the glare on him. "...Forget it."

And that's when the inhaler came flying through the air, lobbed from the pocket of the strange man. Scott caught it without thinking and stared at it.

While I was beyond gobsmacked, I was about to ask if he'd found a flashlight too, when he turned and walked away without another word.

I stared at him with my jaws wide open, trying to figure out what the actual livid hell was going on.

When he was finally out of sight, Scott seemed to recover, tucking the inhaler away. "Okay, wow. Look, whatever dude, I gotta get to work."

"Dude!" But I grabbed Scott by the sleeve of his hoodie, holding him in place a moment longer. "That was Derek Hale!"

That earned him a blank stare but what else was new?

"You remember, right? He's only, like, a few years older than us."

"Remember what?"

"His family? They all burned to death in a fire like six years ago."

"...Oh man, that's awful." Scott's expression softened again, he always was a soft touch for a sob story and losing your entire family in a fire was definitely qualifying.

"He moved away right after. With his sister." I think I read about that in one of my father's files and I remembered him from the picture, I did have the memory for random bits of trivia.

"I wonder what he's doing back?" Scott asked with a bit of worry.

I just snorted at that, shaking my head in disbelief. Derek was clearly king of the creepers and that little exchange didn't impress me one bit.

"C'mon," I said quietly, giving up on my flashlight.

"Let's get out of here."
