Tangled in Power

Chapter 17: Chapter 15: Checkmate

Sabrina didn't waste a second.

She left Damian standing there, his face dark with realization, and strode out of The Sterling with her phone clutched tightly in her hand.

Her heart pounded.

She had the proof.

But she wasn't safe yet.

Nathaniel was ruthless when it came to betrayal. If she didn't handle this correctly, Damian wouldn't be the only one falling—she could be dragged down with him.

She called Nathaniel.

It rang twice before his smooth, controlled voice came through.

"Sabrina."

"I have something you need to hear," she said. "Meet me at your office. Now."

There was a pause, then, "I'm on my way."

Thirty minutes later, she was seated in Nathaniel's office, with her phone on his desk between them.

Nathaniel leaned back in his chair, watching her with a sharp, unreadable gaze. "Play it."

Sabrina pressed play.

Damian's voice filled the room. 'Nathaniel's trust in you is already broken. I just gave it a little push…'

Nathaniel didn't move, but she could feel the shift in the air—the silent rage simmering beneath his calm exterior.

Then, as the recording ended, he exhaled slowly. "Damian Hale." His voice was deadly quiet.

"He set me up," she said, keeping her tone steady. "And he thought he'd get away with it."

Nathaniel finally looked at her, his dark eyes showing an unknown emotion. Then, to her surprise, he gave her a smile.

It wasn't a warm smile. It was the kind that made her blood run cold.

"You did well, Sabrina," he murmured.

She swallowed. "So… what now?"

Nathaniel stood, adjusting his suit. "Now, Damian learns what happens when you cross me."

He picked up his phone and made a single call.

"Effective immediately, terminate Damian Hale's contract. Freeze his accounts. I want a full investigation into every deal he's touched in the last five years. And make sure he doesn't step foot in this building again."

Nathaniel ended the call, then turned back to her. "Consider this your first real lesson in power."

Sabrina exhaled slowly. She had won.

But as she met Nathaniel's gaze, she realized something.

She wasn't just working for him anymore.

She was becoming something else entirely.
