Chapter 23: Chapter 23: The Sting of the Past
Damien's day was already going in the wrong direction. He had spent the past few hours in meetings, his thoughts barely focused on the task at hand. The monotony of the discussions had lulled him into a state of numbness, his mind wandering to the various tasks he needed to tackle later that day.
But the moment he walked out of the conference room and into the lobby, his attention snapped to something—someone—that he had not expected. Serena.
She was standing by the entrance, her back turned toward him, talking to a man. Damien's stomach twisted as his gaze narrowed. The man was tall, with dark hair and a warm smile. He laughed at something Serena said, and she responded with a smile of her own—one that lit up her face, like a quiet sunrise.
And then he saw it—the hug. Serena stepped closer to the man, her arms wrapping around him in a friendly embrace. The gesture seemed casual enough, but to Damien, it felt like a dagger to the chest. The way she fit into his arms, the way she leaned into him—it all seemed too familiar, too intimate.
Damien stood frozen, watching from a distance, his heart hammering in his chest. He clenched his jaw, his hands balled into fists at his sides. The bitterness that filled him was almost suffocating.
Ryan Blake. That was his name. Serena's old college friend, someone from her past. Someone who clearly still had a hold on her.
Damien had known about Ryan. He had learned everything he could about him during his obsessive research. But seeing them together, seeing how easily they slipped into that connection, was something he hadn't prepared for.
He turned away quickly, walking briskly toward his office as a strange ache settled deep in his chest. His mind raced, thoughts colliding in a mess of jealousy and insecurity.
Had they been more than just friends? Was he her ex? Were they still close? Damien's mind spiraled. He couldn't get rid of the image of Serena and Ryan wrapped in each other's arms, their chemistry undeniable.
For a moment, Damien felt like an outsider in his own life, as though he didn't belong anywhere near her world. A surge of helplessness washed over him, and he had to stop himself from punching the nearest wall.
He found his way to his office, slamming the door shut behind him. His hands were trembling as he pulled his chair out and sat down, staring at the empty space before him.
The image of them—the way Ryan's hand lingered on Serena's back, the way she smiled at him—haunted him. What was he supposed to do with this feeling?
Damien's thoughts turned bitter, and he couldn't stop them. He had always been the one in control, always the one who dictated the terms. But now? Now he was standing on the edge of something he didn't understand.
Serena was slipping away from him, and the thought of losing her to someone else, someone from her past, made his chest ache in ways he couldn't explain.
She can't still have feelings for him, can she? How long were they in a long-distance relationship? Why didn't she mention him before?
Damien shook his head, trying to clear his mind. But the doubts only grew. The fear gnawed at him, relentless and sharp.
It wasn't just jealousy anymore. It was something deeper, something more consuming. His desire for Serena, his need for her, had turned into something darker.
And now, seeing her with someone else—a man who had once been so close to her—made him question everything.
He needed to see her. He needed to know if this was truly nothing more than a friendship or if there was something else lingering there.
But the thought of confronting her, of putting everything on the line, made his stomach churn. For the first time in a long time, Damien felt small. Vulnerable. And he hated it.
As he sat there, his mind racing with thoughts and doubts, Damien realized that he had a choice to make. He could let his jealousy consume him, or he could face his fears head-on.
But which path would he choose?
