Chapter 9: Chapter 9
With every breath I took, my chest burned from the exhaustion. Even though Lilia's healing mended my broken arm and bruised ribs, the fatigue in my body remained like a heavy anchor dragging me down.
The screeching sound of trees snapping behind me sent shivers through my spine. I knew it was still coming—the titan boa. The Umbra-Venator Ophidian wasn't just any snake. This monster, with its black scales streaked with emerald and glowing horns, was death incarnate. Its venom was so potent, it could paralyze and dissolve its prey in moments.
I punched through the trunk of the tree I was hiding in and bolted through the other side, summoning every bit of energy left in me to run. Behind me, the explosion from my fire spell lit the night like a small sun, but it didn't stop the boa for long. Its shadowy form slipped through the blaze like a ghost, relentless in its pursuit.
Running through the forest at night was suicide. Every shadow hid potential predators, every rustling bush was a sign of doom, and every step forward felt like gambling with death. But staying meant the boa would have me. I had no choice.
The world around me seemed to shift. The Titan Boa, the Umbra-Venator Ophidian, was no ordinary predator. It didn't simply chase—it hunted.
The air around me grew unnaturally cold, and the shadows beneath the trees seemed to ripple like dark water. A hiss echoed, not from one direction but from everywhere, as though the forest itself conspired with the snake to swallow me whole.
Suddenly, the ground in front of me turned black as pitch. It wasn't natural darkness; it was alive, pulsating like ink spilled in water. I skidded to a halt as long, tendril-like shadows shot out from the ground, snaking toward me faster than I could react.
"Lilia!" I shouted in panic.
"Left! Dodge left!" Her voice screamed in my mind.
I dove to the side just as one of the shadow tendrils slammed into the spot where I'd stood, sending dirt and leaves flying everywhere. I rolled to my feet, only to see more shadows stretching toward me, twisting and curling like the branches of some ancient, cursed tree.
The boa wasn't chasing me through the forest—it was turning the forest into its weapon.
"Asura, cover me!" I yelled as I fused with him. His waxy arms elongated and hardened, forming a shield to intercept the shadows as I ran.
The tendrils struck with terrifying force, each impact vibrating through my body as Asura absorbed the blows. The boa wasn't letting up. I could feel its presence behind me—a massive, slithering bulk moving effortlessly through the trees.
The shadows closed in, forming a dome of darkness around me.
"No, no, no!" I shouted, desperation rising in my chest. The black tendrils thickened, intertwining like vines until there was no escape. My vision narrowed to a single point of light—the small gap in the dome that was rapidly closing.
Think, Akira!
Without hesitation, I gathered every ounce of energy I could muster and funneled it into Asura. Fire exploded outward from his body in a wave, scorching the darkness and burning a hole through the dome.
I sprinted toward the opening, my legs screaming in protest. The moment I burst through, I felt the tendrils brush my back, cold and sharp like knives. I barely made it out.
"Voltis, lightning rush! NOW!"
In an instant, Voltis unleashed his power. Electricity surged through Asura's body, propelling us forward at blinding speed. The forest became a blur of green and black as we shot through the underbrush like a comet.
But the boa wasn't done.
The shadows moved with it, rippling along the ground and lashing out at us. Roots beneath my feet seemed to shift and twist, trying to trip me. I stumbled, barely catching myself as a tendril lashed across my side, searing pain erupting where it touched.
Lilia's voice came through again, calm but firm. "Jump over the log ahead. You need to reach the clearing!"
I trusted her instincts. Asura leaped high, clearing the massive fallen tree just as the shadows converged behind us, tearing it apart.
But the boa was relentless. Its hiss echoed louder now, a low, vibrating sound that seemed to penetrate my very bones. I glanced back, just for a moment, and wished I hadn't.
It was massive, its bulk twisting through the forest like a serpent of nightmares. Its black scales shimmered with an oily sheen, streaked with emerald lines that glowed faintly in the darkness. The horns on its head curved wickedly, glowing brighter as it summoned more shadows to its aid.
The snake's eyes met mine, and for a brief moment, I felt the weight of its ancient malice. This wasn't just a predator—it was an apex being that thrived on fear.
"Asura, we need more speed!"
The darkness ahead coalesced into another wall. This time, it wasn't tendrils—it was solid, a black barrier that stretched between the trees, cutting off our path.
I funneled more energy into Asura. He grew larger, his waxy body glowing with the heat of the fire within him. With a roar, I smashed through the barrier, flames erupting in every direction.
The impact sent me tumbling, but I forced myself to roll and keep moving. My chest heaved as Voltis poured another surge of lightning into us, propelling us forward.
The forest around me began to thin. I could see the edge of the trees, the faint glow of moonlight filtering through.
But then, the ground beneath me shifted.
The boa had turned the shadows into a trap—a massive pit that yawned open in front of me, filled with writhing black tendrils. I couldn't stop in time.
"Lilia, NOW!"
In an instant, Lilia appeared in front of me, her presence radiating warmth and light. She unleashed her barrier skill, a glowing dome of energy that repelled the shadows just long enough for me to leap over the pit.
We landed hard on the other side, my knees nearly buckling under the strain.
A sudden impact launched us sideways.
Pain flared in every corner of my body as we crashed through a massive tree trunk, slamming into the ground with a force that left me disoriented. As I shook off the impact and prepared to move again, I caught sight of our new nightmare.
The Aegis-Lacer Malarach.
It stood three meters tall, with a lean, muscular frame covered in pristine white fur streaked with black stripes. Its claws gleamed under the moonlight, each one longer than my forearm. The metallic spike on its tail swung ominously behind it. Its red eyes locked onto me for a moment, evaluating me like prey.
My heart sank. This thing was fast, powerful, and designed to kill.
But then it lunged—over me.
Asura's head jerked back as the creature soared overhead, landing behind us with the grace of a predator. There was a moment of silence before a deafening hiss cut through the air.
I turned to see the Malarach standing off against the Umbra-Venator Ophidian. Its claws tore through the shadows the snake summoned, and its tail spike deflected the boa's venomous fangs with an ear-splitting clang.
I didn't wait to see how the battle played out.
"Asura, GO!"
With a burst of speed, we bolted again, weaving through the forest. My heart pounded as we pushed past our limits, running farther and farther. The sound of the snake and mongoose fighting faded behind us.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the forest grew quieter. My legs felt like jelly, and Asura stumbled, collapsing into the underbrush. I quickly retreated from the fusion, gasping for breath and collapsing onto the ground.
For a moment, I just lay there, staring up at the stars. We were alive. Somehow, we were alive.
But I knew that was only for now. This forest was relentless. It wouldn't stop until it claimed me or I made it out.
