Chapter 48: Chapter 47
After a short nap alongside my companions, I woke up feeling rejuvenated. The medicine I had taken earlier had worked wonders, not only mending my injuries but also bolstering my strength. Around me, the others stirred as well: Lilia, Voltis, Sangrelis, Elythia, Asura, and even Nyx—who usually kept himself detached—seemed more present after our rest.
We had all needed the break. The strain of the day had pushed us to our limits. Between mastering the second level of energy usage and grappling with the complexity of the magical language Atlas introduced, none of us had been spared. Lilia had picked up the basics quickly, her adaptability shining through. Voltis knew fragments of the language but struggled to apply them. Elythia and Nyx showed some understanding but were far from proficient. Asura, ever the powerhouse, had fought against his limits, refusing to let the unfamiliar territory slow him down. Even Nyx, who preferred efficiency above all else, had begrudgingly pushed himself.
Apocalypse's earlier appearance still loomed over us like a dark specter. It had been a stark reminder that our current strength wouldn't suffice against what was to come. Nyx, who prided himself on careful calculation, now realized that keeping up wasn't optional—it was survival.
As I stretched and prepared for the evening, I thought about ordering food for everyone when my phone buzzed. A message from Atlas lit up the screen: an invitation to a formal dinner at an elite restaurant.
I knew these places were renowned for their magical cuisine—meals infused with energy from powerful creatures and rare plants. They didn't just satisfy hunger; they enhanced strength, healed wounds, and restored energy.
"A formal dinner, huh?" I muttered, glancing at Asura and Lilia. They were watching me closely as I picked out my attire.
"Should we get ready as well?" Lilia asked, tilting her head.
"You two already look prepared," I said with a grin. "Asura, your armored form looks more than formal enough. And Lilia, your pink dress is perfect, though…" I paused and pulled up a few images of different designs on my phone. "Want to try something new?"
Lilia studied the options thoughtfully. "Hmm, maybe another time. This one feels right for now."
Asura crossed his arms. "You think this armor counts as formal? I'm not exactly dressed for a dinner."
I chuckled. "You're a walking tank, Asura. I think that counts."
"Fair enough," he said with a smirk.
After settling on a sleek gray suit for myself, I added a stylish touch by wearing glasses. They weren't necessary anymore—my vision had improved—but they added a sophisticated edge. My weapon orb transformed into an elegant silver and gold watch, completing the look.
Satisfied, I stepped outside, where the guild's gift—a sleek silver BMW—awaited. It wasn't just a car; it could fly as well. I wasn't entirely sure how to operate it, but the self-driving feature saved me from embarrassing myself.
The restaurant stood out among the town's bustling streets, a grand structure that looked more like a castle than a dining venue. Its golden lights and intricate design spoke of wealth and exclusivity. Inside, tamers dressed in formal attire mingled, their status evident in every detail of their clothing and demeanor.
A waiter escorted me to a private table where Atlas and Yuna were already seated. Atlas wore a pristine white suit that radiated authority, while Yuna's flowing silver dress was nothing short of stunning.
"Welcome, Akira," Atlas greeted, standing to shake my hand.
"Thank you for the invitation," I replied, smiling as I took in their polished appearances. "You two look incredible. What's the occasion?"
Atlas chuckled. "Your welcome dinner, of course. It's not quite headquarters-level, but we're making the best of what we have here."
Yuna nodded, her voice warm. "We wanted to show our appreciation. You've been through a lot these past few days, and this is just the beginning. There's much more ahead."
I took my seat, grateful for the gesture. As the first course arrived, a sense of determination settled within me. Surrounded by my companions and allies, I knew this was just the start of an arduous yet rewarding journey.
The dinner was a moment of relative peace, and as Akira sat down, he couldn't help but feel a sense of welcome from the others. Beside him, Lilia and Asura settled in. Atlas and Yuna both seemed surprised that they were accompanying him, but Akira was grateful for their presence. He glanced at Asura, who was awkwardly trying to adjust to the formal atmosphere, a bow tie on his armored form. Despite the humor of it, Akira couldn't help but smile. Asura had attempted to make himself look more presentable, but with no role model, he had simply made do.
Lilia, on the other hand, looked every bit the princess, and even Atlas couldn't help but compliment her. "This must be the lovely Miss Lilia and the boisterous Asura. You both look elegant," he said, his voice warm. Asura grunted but didn't say anything, while Lilia smiled sweetly, clearly enjoying the praise.
Akira nodded along, agreeing with Atlas. Lilia certainly looked like a little princess. Her grace and poise stood in stark contrast to Asura's more imposing, albeit awkward, presence. Even Yuna seemed to agree, her eyes softening with fondness as she looked at Lilia. It was clear to Akira that there was a deep affection from Yuna for the group, even if it was more in the form of admiration than anything else.
When the introductions were made, Akira was formally introduced to Yuna. Atlas explained that she had been his student for a decade and was a promising researcher. "You're lucky she's available to help you with your learning," he said with a proud smile. Akira expressed his gratitude, and Yuna, always the professional, simply nodded in response. "I don't mind," she said, her tone calm.
Akira couldn't help but notice the brief flash of surprise in Atlas' eyes. Yuna, a researcher through and through, had always been a person to focus more on her work than forming emotional connections. But here she was, sitting at dinner with a male, dressed up and looking unusually radiant. It was a side of Yuna that Akira had never seen, and he wondered what had sparked this change.
Atlas observed her for a moment longer, a subtle smile tugging at his lips. "It seems my girl has grown," he thought. It wasn't just her looks that made him proud; it was the fact that she was opening up, even in this small way. As a father figure, he felt both proud and a bit worried. He had seen many in the academy come and go, but Yuna had been his constant. He knew her heart—passionate about research, but lacking experience with relationships.
Akira, ever the observant one, felt a pang of empathy for Yuna. She seemed to struggle with the balance between her professional side and the human emotions that started creeping into her. He could relate to that conflict, having gone through similar struggles himself.
"So, Akira," Atlas asked, snapping Akira from his thoughts, "how are things here? I'm sure things are quite different from the Beast Empire."
Akira hesitated. He had to lie again. He had never been to the Beast Empire. "I don't really have any experience with the Beast Empire. I only know the Emerald Knight. Other than that, I've mostly known the wild lands. It was a difficult time living outside human society, but the knight had been very helpful."
Yuna's expression softened. "That is terrible," she murmured, genuinely feeling the weight of his words. It was clear she had an immense amount of empathy for his situation.
Akira nodded, understanding her reaction. It wasn't the first time he had had to explain his struggles. "It wasn't easy, but I made it through," he said with a hint of a smile, trying to downplay the pain.
"Twenty years alone? That's impressive," Atlas said with a deep respect in his voice. "Were there others with you?"
"No, I was alone," Akira answered simply, and it felt like another weight dropped into the room. The truth hung between them, heavier than he would've liked.
Yuna's face grew serious. "I thought the Emerald Knight was honorable. How could he keep you away from your family?"
Akira paused, considering his response. "It's not his fault. My family... doesn't exist in this world anymore." His words were carefully chosen, the meaning layered and yet true.
The table fell into an uncomfortable silence for a moment. Yuna's eyes widened slightly as she processed his words, her heart aching for him. "I'm so sorry," she whispered, unsure of what else to say.
Akira offered a small, reassuring smile. "Don't worry. I know they're in a better place," he said, but his voice wavered just a bit, betraying the sadness he tried to keep buried. He hoped that his family, his wife Ai especially, was safe in his original world, away from the dangers of this one.
Atlas, sensing the heavy atmosphere, shifted the conversation. "Life has its ups and downs, but we must keep moving forward. Even though you've lost someone, fate has brought us together. We hope you can accept us as your family someday."
Akira looked around the table at the people who had become his unexpected support. Asura and Lilia sat beside him, their loyalty evident, their presence a comfort. "You're not alone, Akira," Asura said, his deep voice firm. "You have us." Lilia's small hand squeezed his, adding her own silent agreement. "We share your pain, your joy," she said, her voice full of sincerity.
Akira smiled softly, grateful for the support. "Thank you," he said, feeling more at ease than he had in a long time.
Yuna, who had remained silent throughout the exchange, admired Akira's strength. His calmness, despite the pain he had endured, intrigued her. She had seen people break under such pressure, but Akira had a resilience that was almost impossible to understand. "How does he do it?" she thought, still captivated by his composed demeanor.
Before the dinner could resume, Akira noticed Ekon walking in with a striking african woman. He hesitated for a moment, unsure whether to approach him, but decided against it, respecting the fact that Ekon was likely on a date. However, his eyes lingered on the woman, and for a brief moment, Akira noticed Ekon's gaze land on Yuna. The look was fleeting, but it made Akira wonder about the dynamics in the room.
"Is everything alright, Akira?" Lilia asked quietly, noticing his distracted expression.
Akira nodded and gave her a small smile. "Yeah, just thinking," he replied, his thoughts drifting for a moment before he focused back on the group.
The atmosphere in the dining hall was warm and inviting, a stark contrast to the tension Akira felt as he sat with his partners and Yuna. The table was elegantly set with various delicacies, their scents mingling in the air, but Akira's attention was drawn to Yuna, who sat across from him.
Her eyes sparkled with an unmistakable interest as she casually engaged in conversation with him. Akira could sense her curiosity, but there was something deeper beneath her words—an attempt to understand him, to perhaps connect with him in some way. The air between them was thick with unspoken intentions, but Akira remained composed, his thoughts occupied with the mission ahead.
He glanced over at his partners, all of whom were absorbed in their own thoughts or quietly eating, but it was hard to ignore the subtle discomfort that flickered in their eyes when Yuna addressed him. It was clear they didn't trust her fully, and Akira shared their wariness. Though she was kind and polite, there was an air of mystery about her, and Akira knew better than to trust someone just because they were charming.
"So, Akira," Yuna began, her tone soft and coaxing. "What made you decide to join Silver Horizon? It's not exactly a small commitment."
Akira's gaze flicked briefly to Atlas, who was seated at the head of the table, observing the conversation with an almost fatherly interest. It seemed he was trying to facilitate the exchange, perhaps thinking that Yuna's curiosity was harmless. But Akira couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to this than mere curiosity.
"I've always believed in the power of knowledge," Akira replied carefully, his voice steady. "Silver Horizon offers resources and connections that align with my goals. But it's more than that—it's about pushing the boundaries of what we know, expanding our potential."
Yuna leaned in slightly, her smile gentle but calculating. "That sounds very... ambitious. And what about your partners? You seem close with them. Do they share your vision?"
Akira's eyes narrowed ever so slightly, sensing the underlying question. She was probing, trying to gauge their relationship and dynamics. It didn't escape him that she wasn't simply interested in his goals but perhaps trying to understand how she might fit into that picture.
"They each have their own paths," Akira answered, glancing briefly at Lilia, who met his gaze with a quiet understanding. "But we all work together to achieve what we want. They're more than just partners—they're family."
Yuna's eyes softened at his words, and for a brief moment, it almost felt like she was seeing something she wanted for herself. Her lips parted to speak again, but Atlas interjected smoothly, sensing the tension building.
"Yuna," Atlas said warmly, his voice steady but gentle, "perhaps you'd like to try the dessert? Akira, your partners, and I have been busy all day. It might be a good idea to give them some space to relax."
Yuna blinked, momentarily caught off guard by the interruption, but she quickly recovered, her smile returning, though this time with a hint of reluctance. "Of course, Atlas. I didn't mean to overstep."
Akira appreciated the subtle shift in the conversation, even if he couldn't shake the feeling that Yuna wasn't as innocent as she appeared. The rest of the dinner passed in relative quiet, the conversation shifting to less pointed topics, but Akira remained vigilant. He knew that even if she seemed harmless, it was wise not to let his guard down entirely.
As the meal came to a close, Yuna's attempts to get closer to him had not gone unnoticed by his partners. They were still wary, though they remained polite. Akira couldn't help but wonder what Atlas saw in her. Was he helping her for her own good, or was there something more to her presence that Akira had yet to understand?
After dinner, as Akira and his partners made their way out of the dining hall, Atlas caught his eye. A brief, knowing glance passed between them, but neither spoke. It was clear that Atlas knew exactly what Akira was thinking, but for now, the mystery of Yuna would have to wait.
Akira watched as Yuna hurried off, her face slightly flushed, before turning back toward his own residence. He had some time before his session with Atlas, and he decided to use it wisely.
On his way back, Akira couldn't help but reflect on the peculiar way Yuna had acted. She had always been friendly, straightforward even, but tonight she seemed… different. Was it something he said? Or perhaps something Atlas mentioned? He shook his head, dismissing the thought for now. Relationships were confusing enough without overthinking every little gesture.
Back in his room, Akira sat down and let out a long breath. The day had been productive, but he was still adjusting to the fast-paced nature of his new life. With the training ahead, he needed to mentally prepare.
To clear his head, he summoned Lilia.
"Lilia," he said as she materialized, her serene presence immediately easing his mind, "can you help me focus? I need to clear my thoughts before my session with Atlas."
"Of course, Master Akira," Lilia replied with her usual calm demeanor. She placed her hands near his temples, and a gentle wave of energy flowed through him, clearing the mental clutter and leaving him feeling refreshed.
"Thanks," he said, smiling. "I feel ready now."
"You've been pushing yourself hard," she said, concern evident in her tone. "Make sure you don't overdo it. Even the strongest need rest."
Akira nodded. "I'll keep that in mind. But there's so much to learn and so little time. I can't afford to slow down."
