Tall Villainesses Are Obsessed

Chapter 2 - Why us..?

Why us..?

Inside the car that was rattling and going down the hill.
There, a young girl with disheveled hair and eyebrows was silently watching the sky without any expression, having lost the center in her eyes.
“….”
The eyes of those girls lost their light.
The despair suddenly found us, who had thought we saw hope.
The skeleton, staring up at the sky blankly, recalled her early days.
***
My mother was a peddler.
My mother was the type who entangled with men to earn money.
My siblings and I were born because of the carelessness with the monk’s nephew.
My mother spoke openly about her relationship with the monk as if that was how we were born.
In my mother’s eyes, there was resentment.
“It’s not like people like you should have been born..”
My mother looked at us with sad eyes.
We were crushed under the gaze of such a mother.
“Ha.. Who knows, maybe only men will grow up, so eat a lot of rice.”
And with that, mother went out to work, leaving just the two of us at home.
Father would come home late every night, drunk, and when mother went to work, we ate a few pieces of toast.
On really tough days, we would catch and eat frogs from the ditches.
Thankfully today, mother left some bread without eating.
“Rita, let’s eat this.”
I held out the bread to Rita and said.
“Our Rita should eat this big one.”
Naturally, I gave the large piece to Rita, and she looked at my face and said.
“Auntie, why don’t you ever eat the big one and always the small one?”
Rita glared at me.
To be honest… my stomach was growling like crazy every day.
The small piece of bread in my hand wasn’t enough to fill my stomach.
I used to handle the daily water problem, but I couldn’t be as generous as Rita.
‘The biggest problem now is Rita herself… If I become weak, it wouldn’t work…’
Rita, who was only one of my weak siblings, was naturally weak.
Scarlett always prepared more food for Rita than for herself.
Even if there wasn’t much to have, I wanted to feed her at least one thing until she was full.
“Yes.. Sis is always hungry, right.. Let’s eat quickly, Rita?”
“Yes, Sis!”
Rita smiled at me with a bright smile.
Seeing Rita’s smile seemed to dispel all worries.
We talked about our journey back.
Stories from the book, the amazing soup, and even fascinating stories about making delicious food were all things we were hearing for the first time.
That day we were busy.
It was about visiting a place we had only seen in a book.
Rita and I walked hand in hand busily.
***
“…….”
Rita, who had been walking hand in hand with me, now seemed refreshed with blood flowing from her head.
Even today, my parents argued without much change.
Every day, arguments started at the same time, and I thought they’d end soon today as well, but it didn’t.
As the words gradually became harsh, my father silenced my mother, urging her to hold back.
“Mother… Ma…”

I clung to my seat and spoke in that appearance.
Father’s hand and then Mother’s hair had a vivid red water flowing over them, mixed with the color of my hair.
“Ah..ah..”
The landscape was so infinite, I couldn’t say anything.
Any thought that I might end up like Mother if I made a mistake didn’t shake me.
I just helplessly watched from afar, doing nothing, while my back and swaying legs trembled as I moved toward Father.
“Father… stop….”
I spoke to Father with a shaky voice.
Even though I spoke to Father with trembling hands, Father.. no, the beast turned and left Ritta.
“Yes!”
From Ritta’s head, a red liquid started to bubble.
That instant.
In fear, I ran toward Ritta and held it in my arms as I tried to kill the beast.
The one who dared to harm my beloved sibling was not human. It was the beast.
I wanted to kill that beast on the spot.
But I didn’t have the strength for that.
“Ha… watch out for that bird!”
The beast started collecting objects towards us and said this.
“Never step into this house!!”
The beast was throwing things towards us, not towards me, causing neither Ritard nor I to react, and we just ran outside.
“…….”
I went outside with Rita.
Rita was in a deep sleep, and there were no sounds coming from her glowing eyes.
There was silence only in the dark alleyway.
I felt a shiver as I brushed against the cold wind.
A single clear drop fell from my trembling palm.
Skallick realized it was a tear. The emotions repressed for so long erupted all at once.
“Sob…sob…”
Finally, I shed tears.
Why must only we suffer? Why can we never be happy, and why are we always victims?
Skallick pushed aside the curiosity that had been creeping up and walked ahead aimlessly.
Having walked barefoot, my feet hurt terribly.
That’s why. Even though the tears wouldn’t stop, I kept crying in that moment.
A door opened from a nearby house, and someone called out to us.
“Are you okay, sweetheart?”
A woman looked at Rita and me as we passed by.
“R.. Rita is… Rita is…”
I finally scribbled down the words there.
As I wrote from that spot, my last sight was of countless feet coming towards me.
“……!”
With clarity restored, I leaned against the rail painfully.
Once my mind cleared, the first action was to look for Rita.
Rita… Rita…! Rita is not nearby.
I dragged my heavy body and headed aimlessly outside.
I lost my words in front of the landscape that unfolded before my eyes.
“It’s fun!!”
Rita was running around, playing with her friends.
I wanted to see if I saw it wrong, so I closed my eyes and looked again, but it was not a dream, it was reality.
“Huh? Scarlet Witch!!”
While zoning out, I was looking at Rita, and she found me and started running towards me.
[Wow]
Rita came to my arms and sat.
That day, for the first time, I shed tears in front of Rita.
From that day on, we came to live in the orphanage.
At first, I doubted the orphanage.
There is no one who is friendly without reason. If a stranger is friendly to me, it’s because they want something from me.
That’s why I didn’t easily open up my heart.
When Rita went to the orphanage teacher, she always watched the teacher by my side and walked with Rita.
Thus, after living in the orphanage for a month, I came to know that this place was very safe.
Every day was happy, and the meals were delicious, and the nights of sleeping together were even more comfortable without any worries.
Until I fell asleep, I kidded around, exchanging stories with friends.
Before I knew it, I had adapted to such a life.
Every day is interesting and tomorrow is awaited with anticipation.
I wished such a day of ours could last forever.
But like that, everyone slowly drifted into sleep one by one.
That day our dreams lay shattered like glass.
“Children, hurry up and run!”
The teacher woke us from our sleep and what we saw upon waking was the scene of us rushing down the crackling corridor with panic.
With the hot heat enveloping us we quickly ran through the corridor, gathering our wits in haste.
Suddenly alarmed by the unexpected situation, we desperately tried to leave the place.
“Men, all die and young women reproduce! They must be saved!”
The only escape route was through a particular set of stairs for the leaders.
“Get away from here quickly!!”
The teacher, alone, faced the raging flames.
“This is our house!!”
The teacher was surrounded by the flame as he was trapped in that place with a strong resolve.
“…….”
Faced with that sight, we stood paralyzed, unable to even move.
Worried for our safety… the teacher, who once played with us there, was engulfed by the flames because of the bandits.
The teacher’s death.
We could do nothing to resist.
Thus, our cries were forcibly led to the truck by the bandits’ hands.
“……..”
Dazed, the sky gazing skeletons stared blankly at the ceiling.
“……..”
Rita was staring with a look similar to a skull.
Rita, gazing at the sky that was impossible to hope for, had an expression she couldn’t quite define.
Gazing at Rita, Skull followed the direction Rita was looking at and raised its shell to find a big star in the sky.
Skull spoke towards the star.
“Why us…”
A soft voice fell from Skull. Skull looked at the biggest and brightest star.
“Why just us! Why do only we have to suffer every time!!”
Skull’s voice trembled through the mountains, echoing, yet no one answered Skull’s words.
“Haha…”
Skull laughed as if suppressing pain, then sank back to its place.
That day, Skull completely abandoned hope.
Soon afterwards, Rita would leave without looking back.
“Now… I can’t stand it anymore…”
Skull’s heart was quietly burning.
***
The vision became a dizzy blur.
Louisen arrived at the auction house to find Skull and Rita.
The auction house was truly a hell on its own.
From where they buy and lose the parts of people to the place they dare not wish to return to twice.
Louisen discovered a rough pamphlet.
[Wholesale amounts of old specialties. Sales. Secondhand operation.]
“It seems like someone’s here..”
I started heading to where I knew they would be.
