Chapter 46 - The Truth Lies Where You Dare Not Look
Clang, clang, clang!
The wooden box was shaking violently, as if someone was struggling inside, hitting against the sides.
Meanwhile, the radio kept producing sharp electromagnetic noises, making He Gu feel unwell.
Moreover, as the electromagnetic noise continued, the movements inside the box grew more dramatic, as if the thing inside was about to break out at any moment!
He Gu wanted to run out of the warehouse, but his legs felt as if they were filled with lead, and he couldn’t move at all!
It was that electromagnetic noise causing trouble!
He Gu quickly realized the problem and frantically started pressing the switch on the radio.
However, no matter how much he tried, he couldn’t turn off the sound.
He Gu was desperate. Making a quick decision, he lifted the radio, preparing to smash it to the ground.
If he couldn’t turn it off, he would physically eliminate it!
But just as He Gu lifted the radio, his wrist was caught by a hand.
Startled, He Gu turned his head only to see the supervisor had somehow come up close.
The supervisor snatched the radio from He Gu’s hand, swiftly opened the back cover, and removed the battery.
The sharp electromagnetic noise immediately ceased.
As soon as the noise stopped, He Gu felt as if a huge burden was lifted off him, and all his discomfort vanished instantly.
What’s more, the violently shaking wooden box also immediately settled down.
He Gu let out a deep breath, realizing he was sweating profusely.
The supervisor put the battery-less radio on the table and glanced at He Gu expressionlessly, “This is the company’s property. You’ll have to pay for any damage.”
He Gu gave a wry smile. Given the circumstances, who cared about that?
Just then, the wooden box that had just quieted down a few seconds ago began to shake violently again.
Clang, clang, clang!
The noise was even louder than before!
He Gu even saw some cracks appearing on the wooden panels of the box. The thing inside was about to break out!
Seeing this, He Gu’s face changed, and he subconsciously looked at the supervisor.
Unexpectedly, the supervisor’s face darkened. He walked over and kicked the wooden box, looking quite annoyed.
“Keep it down!”
The supervisor’s yell silenced the wooden box instantly.
He Gu stared at the supervisor, dumbfounded. That worked!?
“Supervisor, what’s in the box…?”
He Gu ventured to ask.
The supervisor replied indifferently, “These boxes contain raw materials for traditional medicine.”
“Traditional medicine materials sometimes include live bodies. It could be a snake or a farmed pangolin, who knows.”
Hearing the supervisor’s words, He Gu looked at the wooden box with doubt.
Live raw materials?
Which traditional medicine factory directly imports live materials?
Don’t they usually process them first?
And could a snake or a pangolin make such a fuss?
Given the noise just now, He Gu would believe it if someone said there was a bear in the box!
The supervisor stopped there and He Gu didn’t feel it was appropriate to ask more.
The supervisor kicked the box a few more times, forcing it back to its original position after it had moved due to the shaking. Then he turned and walked back to He Gu.
“In the future, if you encounter such a situation, just be tough,” the supervisor said indifferently. “Whether it’s a person or something else, they all fear those who stand up to them. If you’re tougher than it, it’ll fear you.”
He paused and then added, “Of course, if you encounter danger, don’t freeze up. Run if you have to.”
Hearing the supervisor’s words, He Gu looked a bit strange. “Supervisor, are there dangers in the warehouse?”
The supervisor glanced at He Gu and said irritably, “I was just giving an example.”
“There’s no need to run around in this warehouse. If you run into any issues you can’t handle, call me on the intercom.”
He Gu nodded in agreement.
After a moment’s thought, He Gu asked, “Supervisor, I didn’t call you earlier, but you still came over. How so?”
The supervisor responded, “You didn’t mention it, and I almost forgot.”
“I wanted to ask, did you receive the small medicine bottle sent by the HR department?”
He Gu nodded, “I received it.”
The supervisor nodded lightly and said, “You need to take one pill from that bottle every night at 10 o’clock, even when you’re on the night shift. I’ll watch the place for you while you go back to your dorm to get it.”
He Gu pulled the medicine bottle from his pocket, “I brought it with me.”
The supervisor was slightly taken aback, then nodded in satisfaction, “That’s good. Remember to take it when the time comes. It can’t be too early or too late. Don’t forget.”
A hint of confusion flashed in He Gu’s eyes, “Supervisor, does everyone have to take this medicine?”
The supervisor nodded, “Everyone in the factory must take it. If you run out, you can get more from HR.”
He Gu asked again, “But what exactly is this medicine? What does it do?”
The supervisor looked deeply at He Gu and said in a heavy voice, “There are many high-powered machines in the factory, and some uncontrollable waste gases produced by the manufacturing process can escape. This medicine can effectively mitigate the harm these things cause to the human body.”
He Gu nodded slightly, so that’s what it was.
The supervisor patted He Gu’s shoulder, “Alright, remember to take your medicine on time. Call me on the intercom if you need anything.”
With that, the supervisor turned and walked towards the exit of the warehouse. When he reached the door, he suddenly turned back and said, “By the way, don’t fiddle with that old radio too much. The last warehouse manager ended up talking to himself all day with that radio and went insane.”
This comment struck a chord in He Gu, instantly bringing to mind the notebook he had found.
He wanted to ask the supervisor if he was talking about warehouse manager number 424, but the supervisor had already walked too far away.
After the supervisor left, He Gu shot a wary glance at the wooden box and the old radio on the table. He pushed the radio to the corner of the table and sat back down.
At this moment, He Gu checked the time on his phone: it was 21:06.
It was still an hour before the designated time to take the medicine.
With no signal on his phone and no radio to listen to, He Gu had no choice but to flip through the crumpled notebook again.
On the last page of the notebook, there were seven rules, three of which were instant death rules.
It was clear that this warehouse was hiding several lethal traps.
But the hidden message provided in the rule list was somewhat puzzling to He Gu.
“In the place you dare not look, the truth might be staring back at you.”
…
What did that mean?
What was considered a place “you dare not look”?
The only mentions of “looking” in the rules, were rule 1 and 2 — you can’t stick your head into the goods inlet, and you can’t peek inside the wooden boxes through the gaps.
And since rule 1 is an instant death rule, there’s only rule 2 left to work with.
Could it be… the truth is hidden inside the wooden boxes?
With this thought in mind, He Gu stood up and turned his attention back to the wooden box that had made a noise earlier…
