Tales Of Gridarnia

Compound Gamma Battle Tower - Part 4 - Fire & Water

“That was good everyone. Thank you.” Collin said

“That was fun!” Bonnie said.

“Yeah! Hey! Can someone throw a fireball?” Hank said.

“You do not have any fire mana.” Collin said.

“Please!!” Hank said.

Collin formed a red fireball in his right hand and let it glow. Bonnie, Hank, and Gerti’s conjurations came running up and started watching it. Collin could see their eyes sparkling while they examined the flame. Hank reached his hand out and the flame rolled into his hands. He held it for a second before dropping it.

“Ouch!” Hank said. “Damn, I almost had it!.”

“Language!!” Cynthia, Tiny, and Jasper said together

“You will need some elemental mana in order to do that.” Amergin said.

“Can we have a fire orb Mr. Collin?!” The three said

“You are not old enough.” Collin said.

They all stood there in the room. The other conjurations appeared and started talking amongst themselves. Collin purchased some more food from the store and had a small picnic of sandwiches that everyone came forward and enjoyed. He sat there enjoying the company and tried to catch his breath. He was very tired. He realized he hadn’t slept in nearly two weeks. Mana and health potions were fueling him with some food in between. He started thinking about the negative effects of not sleeping which made him want to fall asleep. He jerked awake and decided to check his stats while everyone ate.

“System pull up stat screen.” Collin said.

“Do any of you know these matrices we fought?” Collin asked, pulled out Sigurd's matrix and stared at it.

“I knew Zephyr and Sigurd.” Roran said.

“I knew them also.” Amergin said.

“And? Is this one evil?” Collin asked.

The Dreadnoughts were good matrices. Trinity was loyal to the crown. She lost her way when her husband was killed, but she never went against the King.” Amergin said.

Zephyr and Sigurd were two of the most powerful matrices at one point. I do not know any other Matrix that could handle the processing power nor the mana control that was needed to operate their suit. Which I must say was a prototype and not nearly as efficient as the current models.” Midbar said.

“If they were in control of a newly built dreadnought. They could very easily handle one by themselves. I am not talking about a conjuration either. I am talking about a real generation four battle Mech.” Roran said.

“What about the others?: Collin asked.

“I fought Clerenda once. She was crazy.” Jasper said.

“I was the one who captured her. She had just turned an entire city into undead.” Midbar said.

“We all knew Xavier the Warden. He seemed good, but he was secretly a serial killer.” Cynthia said.

“What would happen if I bonded them to the new conjurations?” Collin asked.

“What do you mean?” Amergin asked.

“Could they take over me? Influence me? Take or convince one of you?” Collin asked.

“They shouldn’t be able to,” Tiny said.

“I would not recommend equipping a necromancer like Clerenda. She is completely insane. Now that is to say we should totally find you a necromancer but there are plenty of matrices we can find to control that conjuration. Clerenda should be locked away in a dark hole if we ever catch her.” Amergin said.

“We should probably do the same with Xavier and Delilah if we ever catch them. Those matrices are too far gone to be of any help to you.” Midbar added

Sigurd Matrix - Metal - Dreadnought Class

Bond with No Name Dreadnought Class Level 1?

Yes or No

Collin clicked yes and waited. His mana took a huge dip before a metal conjuration formed in front of him. It was nine feet tall and four feet wide. The conjuration was of a silver grayish metal with blue tinted sigils and runes painted all across its body. The metal humanoid had a helm of dragon glass on the front covering its face and two medium size horns coming out of each side. There were two small four foot blades sheathed vertically down each leg and a larger two handed sword sheathed vertically down his back. The left arm was a bit bulkier holding a small rectangular box on the forearm. Further inspection found that the box held a plethora of items such as grappling hooks, retractable blades, and projectile bolts. The other arm had a small box on the forearm which showed to hold a retractable buckler shield. The conjurations backside had a metal box that looked similar to a backpack. The large sword had its own slot to slide down into. The rectangular satchel showed to be storage for metal-like discs, and other such objects. Collin walked around it in complete awe.

“This is the coolest conjuration I think I have ever seen.” Collin said.

“Thank you sir. I do have a knack for cleaning up well.” Sigurd said in a deep and rustic accent.

“Are you evil Mr. Sigurd?” Bonnie said running up to touch his metal frame. Sigurd picked her up and put her on his shoulder.

“No Ma am, I most certainly am not. Major Sigurd at your service.” He said. Bonnie and Hank came running up to jump on him also.

“Sigurd, what the hell happened?” Midbar said. He had walked forward and formally shook his hand.

“Pardon my language but that Damned trickster is trying to take over. You saw how he had control of my brother and I. Just us though. He doesn’t have to control the others. They were having a field day.”

“So Trinity and you weren’t bad?” Collin asked. He was a bit confused at how welcoming the other matrices were towards him.

“Oh certainly not. Trinity, Zephyr, and I were part of a secret operation. After we lost it and attacked the Empire, which was more Her and Zephyr if i am being honest. They never listen to me. Anyway, We were asked by the king to make an inquiry into the jail. He had already been working on a case against Xavier for years. It turns out Delilah and him were in cahoots torturing and killing prisoners. They sent Trinity to the prison with Zephyr while I was commissioned as one of the jails operating matrices. We were delivering regular reports and keeping an eye on things until one night Delilah came to Trinity's room. I do not know what happened but shortly after We had been taken over. They installed me back into a makeshift dreadnought that was being stored on sight and the breakout commenced. Zephyr and I managed to fight back but at that point it was over.

“I can confirm that this is true sir. I was advising the King during this time.” Amergin said.

“Mr. Sigurd. What class would you fall under? This dreadnought conjuration seems to be much more versatile than others.” Collin asked

“Like most stage five archetypes, I am capable of almost all of the other types. To keep things simple however, You may categorize me as either a tank or a fighter. I do not have any magical abilities other than the control I have on metal objects. I do have a few projectile attacks but I am much too slow to be considered with the archers. There are some dreadnoughts that were designed for stealth, magic, and healing. I am not one of those.” Sigurd explained. “The dreadnought archetype is interesting in that each matrix and each suit are designed with a particular role in mind. We are much more specific than the generic classes that are pursued.”

Collin placed him with the tanks category and pulled up his battle store.

“We currently have forty-six conjurations. We can hold up to a hundred now, A hundred and five if we count the clones. Should we max this out?” Collin asked. He had summoned Tiny, Amergin, Midbar, Sigurd, Gold, Marissa, and Sarah as well as a medium size table and chairs . One of each Archetype was present to advise him on what was missing in his miniature army. It felt very much like a council meeting. He felt himself missing home and wondered how everyone was doing. Tonya had checked in periodically but was showing up less frequently since Ray left the village to go find the last beacon. He wondered how that mission was going.

“We are lacking in Mages and Rogues. Two to one compared to the other classes.’ Marissa said.

“We could form teams. At this point, you have enough room for twenty Five-man teams.” Gold Responded.

“We are less than halfway up the tower. It is safe to say that we will be able to obtain more as we rise up. However the next nine floors are exclusively controlled by Delilah. We may not receive any conjurations or if we do, it's possible the matrices are of evil nature in order to try and throw us off.” Collin said.

“The next series of floors is supposed to train you in water and fire elements. The original plan was also to teach you the healing and support class. Delilah may have changed everything up. It could be ten floors of exactly what we just went through.” Amergin said.

Collin noticed two legendary matrices were available and clicked on the description.

Legendary Matrix (2)

Name: Atlas

Class: Sage

Affinity: Water

Name: Apollo

Class: Warlock

Affinity: Fire

“Yall know them?” Collin asked

“The twins are here?” Tiny said wide eyed. “I thought they were in Compound Alpha.”

“Collin, you should know them. We studied them in school.” Gold said. “The Twin Magicians of Mount Zermatto.”

Atlas and Apollo were matrices from the northern regions. Their humans who Collin could not remember were pioneers nearly eighty years ago. They explored the northern region mountain areas. They established villages and outposts. They fought monsters and nomads and established the foundation of northern magic. Atlas who reached the stage four class, Sage, was a powerful healer and water bender. He was one of the first to master water in all of its states. His brother Apollo reached the stage four warlock class and went the opposite direction. He could control fire, lava, and lightning elements. He once reactivated a volcano in order to warm a series of villages who were on the brink of frostbite. The volcano still flows to this day starting from the leftmost peak of Zermatto and traveling down through the valley where it enters back into the earth near the north western coast of the continent. The heat that radiates from the flowing lava allows the forest and temperatures to stay in a livable range. Unfortunately this is not something that is sustainable on its own which is why there are select fire mages in the area whose entire purpose is to manage the flow of lava from the peak and back into the earth.

Collin immediately purchased the two matrices and the two stage four conjurations who coincidentally were a sage and warlock. He activated and conjured them to the table in their own chairs.

“Hello.” Atlas said smiling. He sat with perfect etiquette and posture. His voice was soft but of proper speech. It was as if he had grown up amongst royals his entire life.

“Greetings.” Apollo said. He was much more casual and relaxed. His voice was low but lackadaisical. He leaned back in the chair in such a carefree manner that Collin was a bit taken back by the comparison of the two.

“Hello. My name is Collin.” Collin said.

“We know. We have been waiting. It is nice to meet you.” Atlas said.

“Were you also brought here to train him?” Amergin asked.

“Yes. However we arrived a bit later than the other five. Where are Cynthia, Roran, and Jasper.” Apollo said. The three conjurations appeared at the sound of their names and greeted them.

“Wait. How many matrices were brought here just to train me?’ Collin asked. He was feeling uneasy about all the work the King seemed to have done at this point.

Midbar, Roran, Cynthia, Jasper and myself were brought here shortly before you arrived. Draconis and the King delivered us.” Amergin explained.

“Apollo, Alexander, Regis, and myself were brought here about a week ago.” Atlas said.

“What…Alexander and Regis are here?” Collin asked. ‘What about the King? Why does Grandpa not have his Matrix?” Collin yelled out. Regis was the King’s Matrix and though he had been uninstalled many years ago. Regis was always with the King. Alexander on the other hand was the matrix of the prior King. Liam’s older brother, Leroy. Collin did not understand why they were here.

“Regis and Alexander must be helping Ray and Trixie.” Apollo said

“The King did not tell us his reasons. He only said that we must prepare you.” Atlas said before going back to a conversation he was having with Midbar.

Collin let the matrices talk amongst themselves. He had tuned out what they were saying as he contemplated what this meant. If the King allowed for two stage six matrices to be here to train him. He most certainly would have a chance at becoming the King someday. He technically had it by blood right but due to the new laws, he would have to fight for it later. Collin started processing what it would mean for him to possibly be the King. He would have to leave his home in Region XI. Ray would have to find a new Vice Baron. Maybe Kono would take the position, or Caleb. They would have to find positions to replace them. They haven't even begun training Kono to become the new Lord of the Goldenleaf. Ray was not handling that part well. He wanted nothing more than to just live in his hut and train the younglings. Collin thought about how they arrived in this position. He thought about the problems that they were tackling and how that might look on a continental scale. He started thinking about the king and what this meant. What kind of law is being broken by this plan being carried out? What kind of bureaucracy was the King performing to allow all of this to occur. Collin felt tears forming in his eyes as he thought about all the what ifs and what could bes if his grandpa had known about him just a few years sooner. His head started to ache and he made himself return back to the present. He was not King yet. He wasn’t even half way up the tower. He needed to stay on task. He also needed some sleep. He was utterly exhausted. He had a trickster to fight. A rematch with a necromancer and a warden who would most certainly be ready. He also had to save Zephyr and whoever else was under the Trickster’s control. Finally he needed Trixie back. His life has been nothing but chaos since he lost her.

“We need to get moving. I think we should purchase twenty-seven conjurations and matrices. That will put us at a solid seventy- five out of one hundred. My mana is enough to sustain that much for about an hour before we need to worry about burnout which should be adequate enough to get us through the next ten floors. Everyone, please discuss amongst yourselves and decide what conjuration and matrix combination we should purchase. You all have access to my storage, materials, and the battle store so you are aware of what we can and cannot do. Please make a determination and let Amergin know. Amergin, once a decision is made, please move forward with the purchases. Bonnie and Hank, I want you to speak with each Matrix and make all necessary repairs and upgrades as they wish. Once you have completed this, please begin meditating in order to progress your mana control as well as recoup whatever I have lost. Gerti, I want you to begin meditating now so that they have the necessary mana to make these changes. I want someone to wake me up in four hours.” Collin explained before moving to the west side of the room.

He conjured material enough to make a type of bed for him to crawl into. When he was satisfied with the makeshift bundle, he purchased a sleeping potion from the “Other Potion” section of the store and chugged it before passing out on the mat.

Collin woke up feeling much better. He made a mental note to purchase as many sleeping potions as he could before leaving the tower. He decided to treat it like he would a normal day minus Mrs. Rosie’s honey buns. He has some fruit cheese and bread from the battle store. He went through a series of stretches and meditation rituals. He kept his eyes closed as he tried to feel the ambient mana around him. He could feel the triplets participating with him. He thought he could actually feel everyone participating with him. He finished his routine, got dressed, and pulled up his conjuration list.

“Hank, anything interesting happened while I was asleep?” Collin asked

“We learned how to make fireballs!” Hank said.

“How did you manage that?” Collin asked in surprise.

“They absorbed the cores…” Amergin said. He was clearly not happy either.

“What?” Collin said, stopping in his place.

“You said I could upgrade everyone so I upgraded everyone.” Hank said. He appeared in front of him and began forming a small red fireball in his hands.

“You knew what he meant. You three are in so much trouble.” Cynthia said. She appeared in front of him and snuffed the flame out.

“Are they okay? Did that mess with them any? What does that mean for them as newborns?’ Collin asked, concern was very evident in his expression

“They appear to be fine. We are watching them.” Tiny said. “We are unsure what this will mean for whatever human bonds with them.”

Collin brought up the status screen

“Where did you guys even learn about these skills?” Collin said.

“We assigned a bunch of the elements to other people. Don’t worry, we also assigned a bunch of water and fire cores to you.” Hank said.

“We learned them from watching everyone train. You slept for a really long time and we got bored so we started training with the newbies. They suck by the way.” Bonnie replied.

“Wait, who did they beat?” Collin asked.

“All the stage one and twos.” Roran said. His pride was showing in his voice.

“Bonnie nearly beat the Knight Class Scott. His extra defense was the deciding factor.” Amergin said

“Hank did beat Harry the Ninja.” Midbar said

“It was actually really impressive.” Tiny said.

“Alright kids, show me what you can do. Come at me like you would the bad guys.” Collin said.

He pulled out his sword and switched to his adventurer set. With his matter manipulation, he created a dueling platform in the middle of the room. He felt a rush of energy as all of his conjurations appeared around the platform. The triplets conjured their armor. Collin noted that it was not the same armor that he had purchased for them on the tenth floor. They had splurged with his battle coins and outfitted themselves in unique gear for each of them. Hank wore a medium set of crimson armor made out of what appeared to be dragonhide; he had a hand and a half short sword. Bonnie wore a cross class set consisting of a fighter's leather chest piece and a ranger's greaves. She somehow managed to accent the whole outfit in pink and purple. There was a large hammer and two daggers on her torso. Gerti wore a basic healer set and held a polearm with a blade on both ends. Collin had never seen that sort of weapon before. He faced them and waited for Amergin to start the match.

“Begin!”

Hank shot forward using his air jump skill. He swung his sword downward in a vertical slash. Collin blocked the blow with his sword. The force of the blow surprised him enough that he took a step back. Gerti appeared to Hanks right thrusting her spearhead forward. Collin pivoted to the left to find Bonnie coming down from above with her hammer. Collin formed an air barrier pushing all three of them backwards. Hank conjured water arrows that shot forward. Bonnie threw a fireball and Gerti sent earth spikes at Collin as they were thrown backward. Collin ducked, dived, and dodged the attacks looking up to see a ten by ten foot wall of fire in front of him. He moved to the left ducking to miss a fireball. He sensed something to his right and turned to see a hammer swinging towards him. He threw up another air barrier but was too late. The hammer across, hitting him square in the chest. He managed to throw himself back to lessen the blow but was still thrown backward across the platform. He stood up in time to see a sword and spear coming down on him. These kids were really good. He thought as he rolled forward, slashing the flat part of his blade and connecting with Gerti. He swung the blade around applying air mana to the blade and sent him across the room. Gerti disappeared into thin air. Collin turned, forming a yellow fireball in his hands and throwing it towards Bonnie. It hit her square in the face, extinguishing itself before causing too much damage. Bonnie started crying as she disappeared. Collin turned and faced Hank with his sword. Hank rushed forward with a left faint. The two began exchanging blow after blow parrying , blocking, ducking, dodging and going toe to toe. Collin entered a battle trance and realized suddenly that Hank had copied it. Hank was copying everything Collin did. His fighting style, his battle trance, how hard he swung and the amount of force he put into each swing. Hank was using his mimic ability in the most efficient way Collin had ever experienced. Hank’s determination showed as he conjured his wooden sword and began dual wielding. Collin conjured his katana in his other hand and kept the trance going. After what seemed like minutes Collin managed to kick Hank in the stomach pushing him back. Collin smiled as swords disappeared. He walked over and helped Hank up. They shook hands and turned to see everyone watching them. There was a round of applause and everyone disappeared. Collin chugged a potion and stepped on the platform.

Mr. Collin, These floors are set up a bit differently moving forward. “ Atlas said

“Each will have a room related to fire and a room related to water.” Apollo added.

“You will be working on your healer archetype.” Atlas said.

“Okay.” Collin said.

“We will be limiting you to a single team of our choosing. “Amergin said.

“What about Delilah? Isn’t he going to be attacking us all out on every floor?” Collin asked.

“He is limited by the tower's original purpose. He can influence only so much in the beginning levels of each area. Atlas and I have a bit of control here that he cannot surpass.’ Apollo explained.

“Okay, so do I need to equip healer gear and a staff?” Collin asked

“I am going to teach you a different way.” Atlas said. He conjured what appeared to be a stick and some folded up battle gear.

Collin looked at the stick and frowned. “What is that?”

“Did you not learn how to use wands at the academy, boy?” Atlas asked.

“I did, but I never saw a healer use them.” Collin said

“The traditional way of healing is so boring and imprecise. Most of your healers are so fragile they need a big stick to keep them standing. You do not require that extra long branch however. We shall be learning with a wand.” Atlas said

Collin took the items and mentally equipped them to his sixth gearset. He wore a crimson and navy jumpsuit with extra padding in the non movable areas. There was no cloak. There was no hood. He felt like he was about to run a marathon but was unsure how he would do as the boots he wore were heavy with thick hard soles on the bottom.

“Do I not get to use knives or swords?” Collin asked

“You are allowed one small blade and a wand.” Apollo said, handing him a large knife.

It was a standard issued combat knife that was typically given to a soldier. It had a single edge and was thicker than normal around the spine. Collin held it in his left hand and practiced swiping and stabbing before sheathing it on his waist.

They arrived on the twenty-fourth floor. The room was clearly split with a wall right down the middle. There was an intense heat as the floor held a small river of lava flowing from one end to the other. Collin did not fully understand how the tower made lava flow without burning a hole in the floor but it did. The landscape was filled with red clay and the jagged igneous shards. Collin was thankful for the harder soled shoes as he stepped forward. Derek the fighter, Terra the shield, Aspen the wizard, and Bonnie were conjured in front of Collin. Atlas, Apollo, and Amergin appeared behind him. Collin looked ahead and saw three troll-like creatures standing on the other side of the lava river. They appeared to be nine feet tall, slender build with long skinny arms and legs. Their bodies were shades of reds and browns and it appeared they had no hair whatsoever. This did not look like any normal troll.

“Fire trolls.” Apollo said. “ They are fast and mean. Their skin is very tough and their blood is corrosive to the touch.

“Can I have my sword?” Collin said wide eyed.

“Nope. You must let your team do the work. Your job is going to be support and healing.” Atlas said

“How do I do that exactly?” Collin asked. “I have no healing skills”

“Examine your wand.” Atlas said. Collin looked at it and pulled up the status screen

“Do all wands have these sorts of abilities?” Collin asked

“They vary, but yes. This is a beginners wand. It is upgradable and can have up to two additional spells assigned to it” Atlas said.

“Are you ready sir?” Amergin said.

Collin gripped the wand allowing mana to enter into it. Hementally willed it to cast a barrier spell and pointed it at Terra. The nearby rock swirled around briefly and laid back down.

“Crap.” Collin said.

He took a bit to adjust his grip and tried again. Terra received the barrier. Bonnie walked up and swung her hammer hitting the barrier and bouncing off. Collin nodded with satisfaction and got into position.

“Bonnie, stay near me.” Collin said.

“Actually, No. Bonnie is going to attack. They are all going to attack and your job will be to heal and defend” Atlas said. Bonnie ran up and stood next to the others in front of Collin.

“What if I cannot heal them in time?” Collin asked

“Then they die.” Atlas said

“Here we are fortunate that if they die, then there is a twenty-four hour cooldown and they can come back. Out there you will not have that luxury.” Apollo said

Collin understood. He did not like it, but he understood.

The three fire trolls started making a low rumbling noise in their direction. Terra rushed forward with her great shield as the middle troll rushed forward. Collin watched him leap over the river in a single leap and slash at Terra’s shield. Collin pointed his wand at terra and cast a barrier. The leftmost troll followed and tried to run past Terra. Derek met it with a horizontal slash. The troll dodged and slashed Derek in his right arm. Collin cast heal and watched as Derek’s wounds began to close. The troll did not stop with the one attack. He kept slashing and biting as Derek tried and failed to counter or score a clean hit. Bonnie came running up and hit the troll across the head with the hammer. She followed up with her natural healing spell to assist Collin. He was repeatedly casting the spell to bring Derek’s Health back up. The far right troll came rushing to attack Collin. Collin unsheathed his dagger and began fighting the troll head on. He was holding his own pretty well and was even managing to slash the thick hid of the beast.

“Check your teammates.” he heard Amergin say in his head.

He mentally pulled up his screen and saw that Aspen and Terra were in critical condition. He tried to cast a heal on them but was unable to as the troll kept him occupied. He saw Bonnie trying her beast to heal them with her Nature skill but she was quickly running out of mana. Collin dodged another slash, rolling to the left and casting barrier on himself as he rushed forward. He cast another set of barriers on Terra, Bonnie, and Aspen as he made his way back to the team. Derek had regrouped and was helping Terra fend off one of the trolls while Aspen did his best to cast mana blast after mana blast on another troll. Bonnie was flailing her hammer left and right with no success. Collin cast an air barrier around the entire team. He noticed that using his wand and his own nature related skill caused an increase in the skill. The barrier was double the thickness and maintained its form much longer than if he had cast it without it. The team managed to regroup as the three trolls circled them waiting to pounce. Collin felt helpless as he tried to think of what more he could do. His abilities were practically nothing with these limits set. He could heal and protect but they were not enough to help the team make a deciding blow. If he had any of the others then this would have been easy. If Merlot, red, blue and indigo were his team then this would have been over before it started. Collin felt himself fall into a hopeless circle of what ifs. He could not figure a way out. The trolls came forward one after the other scratching with their claws before rotating around and allowing the other to attack. Collin began seeing a pattern in what they were doing and began casting his barrier and heal spells accordingly. He could see his mana begin to drop and mentally asked Bonnie to start converting the ambient mana to help them. She sat in the circle they made as they protected her. Collin used his earth mana to form a wall around her and shot rocks and sand toward one of the trolls. He kept trying different elemental combinations with his wand. He turned in time to see Derek being slashed open by one of the trolls' sharp claws. His health hit zero and the conjuration disappeared. Collin turned to try and heal Terra but she was overrun by the two other trolls. She disappeared into thin air also. It was now just Collin, Aspen and Bonnie. He had Bonnie stand up and unsheathed her knife. They went back to back trying to hold off their individual troll. Atlas and Apollo watched in the distance. Aspen took a slash to the face and disappeared. Healing and barrier magic was not working. Collin summoned his sword and time froze as the room completely reset.

“What happened?” Collin asked.

“We told you to stay as a healer however you chose to summon your sword.” Apollo said

“We were going to lose. Bonnie would have been killed next.” Collin argued. He pulled up his screen and checked to make sure his conjurations were still there. Aspen, Terra and Derek’s Cooldown had begun but they appeared to be okay.

“Let’s try that again.” Atlas said.

The battle restarted and four more lower level conjurations were summoned to assist. Hank, Jasmine, Flint, and Bell appeared and went to work. Collin had the team stay close together and focus on one troll at a time. Hank and flint went wild with attacks trying to slice and cleave the middle troll. They managed to cut an arm off only to be sprayed with corrosive blood. Collin threw a barrier in time to protect Hank but Flint was hit full on and fell into the lava river. The battle quickly repeated itself as Bell’s shield was ripped from her grasp and she was mauled by the three beasts. Collin managed to push one over into the lava river where it melted but was unable to do that same with the others. The scene froze again right before Hank hit the river. Collin was able to vanquish him before his health hit zero.

Collin tried a third time and decided to focus on pushing the three into the river. This worked on the first but the other two trolls moved to avoid the river all together and instead worked to push Collin and his team into the lava flowing stream. The field reset again and Collin got frustrated.

“How do we beat them? Nothing we have tried has worked.” Collin said.

“He wants a hint Brother.” Apollo said

“I guess we should give him the other spells. He has managed to defeat one of them. Pushing them into the lava was a good idea.” Atlas said. He threw a two rocks at Collin who caught and looked down on it

“Affliction spell? I thought we were learning healing?” Collin asked

“You are. It is important that you understand the four pillars of a support class: healing, afflicting, buffing, and debuffing which is even more simplified to increase health, decrease health, increase abilities and decrease abilities.” Atlas said.

Collin pressed each stone to his wand and watched as they were absorbed into the thin stick.

Ally, Gerti, Hank, and Bonnie formed in front of Collin ready to take the trolls on. Collin held the wand in his hand like he would a sword and realized it was much less comfortable this way. He fiddled with it a bit more and thought of how he could be more accurate with the direction. The stick was about ten inches long and only a tad bit thicker than a magic pen or pencil. Collin adjusted his grip to hold the butt between his thumb and forefinger while the shaft went under and between his forefinger and middle finger. He angled it a bit to where his forefinger and the edge of the wand were pointing in the same direction. He focused on a nearby stone and pushed some fire mana through the tip. A small fireball shot out and impacted the stone perfectly. Smiling he looked up and saw the others watching him

“Sorry. Had to adjust my grip.” Collin said

“Interesting.” Atlas said.

“You know, if there was a way to replace my forefinger with this wand, I probably would be the most accurate spellcaster on the continent.” Collin said.

Apollo took his wand out and meshed it with his index finger. He spoke an incantation and the wand combined with his hand. He pointed at a nearby rock and shot a blast forward, blowing it into smithereens.

“Thanks for the idea sir.” Apollo said happily.

Of course since he was a conjuration he could do body modifications. Collin sighed and went forward to take on the trolls.

Ally and Collin stood ten feet away from the lava river. The three fire trolls snarled in their direction. Hank went running forward and leaped over the river using his air jump skill. He came down hard on the first troll slamming his shield into its head. Gerti rushed forward and used her pole to vault over the river tucking into a front flip before slamming her polearm into a far left troll that had rushed forward to meet her. The far right troll jumped over the river and started attacking Ally. She held her sword up and parried the swipe before slashing at its belly with her sword. Collin aimed his wand and cast three consecutive slow skills on each of the trolls. Their movements appeared to have a delay as their decision to move was going faster than their body could react. Hank managed to dodge a swipe across the torso, pivoting away from the strike and slashing the beast's arm with his sword. Blood gushed outward. Collin cast a barrier around Hank and the blood splashed back onto the troll. Collin followed up the barrier with a bleed skill. The wound continued to flow outward and on to the ground. Hank Brought up an Earth wall jumping on top of it as it rose upward. He followed up with a volley of hydro arrows that failed to penetrate but succeeded in pushing the beast backward as he retreated away. Bonnie came forward with her hammer and jumped on Ally’s shield. Ally timed the jump just right and thrust her shield upward, throwing Bonnie high into the air. Bonnie came down with her hammer striking the beast that had crossed the river. Collin cast a barrier on her as she recovered, managing to block a counter swipe from the troll. Ally let out a large yell using her taunt ability to get the three's attention. Collin cast slow on the other two just as they leaped upward and over the river. The timing was enough to throw the injured troll off and he fell into the molten lava. Hank sat on his earth wall sending fireballs and hydro arrows down on to the two remaining trolls. Gerti blasted herself up on top of the earth wall and began shooting rock spikes to accompany Hank’s attacks. They were not enough to severely damage the trolls but they did cause a good distraction as the two struggled to attack and dodge at the same time. Collin cast Heal and barrier on Ally and Bonnie as they kept up the fight. Bonnie had dropped her hammer and was now using her water whip to attack the troll to the left as ally fought the troll to the right. They were about five feet from the lava’s edge and trying their best to push them further back. Ally parried another strike and followed up with a horizontal slash. The Troll tried to run around the strike but Collin had a slow spell ready for the counter. The Troll missed a step and slipped on the ground. Ally brought her sword down stabbing the creature in the back. Collin rushed forward unsheathing his dagger to stab the troll in the head. He pushed some earth mana into the blade and spikes shot out of the troll's head causing him to fade into thin air. The final troll saw this and went berserk. It ran forward to strike Collin but was cut off by Ally who managed to pull her shield up in time to shove the creature back. Hank and Gerti came forward, having crossed the river. The triplets started performing a combination of strikes. Each attacking and rolling out of the way as the other came forward with another strike. Collin cast heal and barrier on the three as he rushed to the side to try and get in a better position. The four conjurations were pressing the beast who was having a hard time now that it was alone. Collin cast a bleed spell and watched as the creature's arm started to swell. With no cut to burst out from, the troll's right arm was starting to swell and turn purple. Gerti noticed this and began poking at the arm with the blade end of her polearm. She managed to nick the biceps and blood burst all over the area. Bonnie had her air barrier up before Collin could act and the blood managed to miss the conjurations. The force of the hemorrhage left the right arm of the troll dangling by its side. Hank used the destruction to form another earth wall, angling it outward to push the beast backward and on the edge of the lava river. Gerti sent a last ditch air blast and knocked the remaining troll back into the river. It faded as it melted away

“Nicely done everyone!” Apollo said

“Yes! That was very good. Your accuracy with the wand is much more improved and you have begun utilizing the slow spell much more efficiently then I had hoped for.” Atlas said

“Good Job guys.” Collin said to the four conjurations as they faded with the rest of the room.

Collin sipped a health and mana potion and walked over to the next room. The next room consisted of a series of tests. He had to cast multiple heal, barrier, slow, and bleed spells at different conjurations as they ran across the battlefield. The point was to recognize what each needed and he failed to do so in many different situations. Instead of casting a slow spell to cause the arrow to miss Ginger who was rushing to get out of the way of a barrage of arrows, Collin cast a barrier which subsequently caused the arrows to shoot in every which direction impaling Grady, Ruby, Toby, and Scott. He quickly followed up with a healing spell and managed to save the conjuration with a twenty-four hour cooldown. The next few floors were pretty straight forward. He learned to harness his fire mana much more efficiently as well as how to utilize the extent of the flames. He was able to create all levels of fire from red to white. White being the hottest flame in existence actually caused him pain so after reaching that level he quickly dropped it back down to blue which was just below twenty-five hundred degrees Fahrenheit and oddly enough did not hurt him. He also learned how to use water mana. This was much harder for him to figure out as it was the opposite of his natural fire element that he had always possessed. He ended up utilizing mana techniques he had learned from controlling the earth, sand, and air mana on the previous sections of the tower. By the time he had reached the twenty-fourth floor, he had mastered the fire element and reached level six of the cleric class. His water mana usage was getting better as he learned to change between the three different states. He realized very quickly that air and water mana were needed to form Ice just as fire and water mana were needed to create steam. On reaching the second stage of the archetype, his wand underwent a transformation. The heal, barrier, slow, and bleed spells were absorbed into his class as learned abilities. The wand obtained an additional spell slot and five spells randomly appeared in its place.

“How did it do that?” Collin asked as he was inspecting the wand.

“As you increase your proficiency in the archetype and wand usage, more advanced spells will automatically become available. The older spells become part of your regular abilities and the wand grows to adapt to your needs.” Apollo explained

“Is this stuff being taught to our pledges?” Collin asked

“Yes. It has become standard. Each weapon or magical item issued grows with the individual. Unfortunately, we did not have this figured out when you started here.” Amergin explained.

“This is a complete rip off. Can us adults come back for the cool new toys?” Collin asked

“There are programs in development to potentially equip graduates and retired users. We are a few years away from that however. The goal is still to prepare for the ongoing war to the west. Demon slaying magic and abilities are the top priority.” Atlas said.

Collin pulled up his screen to see how much he had improved.

“These next few floors may be a bit more difficult.” Amergin said.

“Yeah, Delilah has control once we beat this next floor.” Atlas said

“What can we do to prepare?” Collin asked

“I think we have done all that we can. I cannot replay the floors anymore for you. This next challenge is it, before we enter into his domain.” Atlas said

The twenty-fourth floor was split into three rooms. The first room was partially submerged in water. Collin and two teams battled a large sea monster. It was a serpent-like creature capable of breathing ice shards. This helped Collin a bit as he was having to create miniature icebergs for the team to stand on. The ice shards helped him not waste as much mana as it was easier to add on to the ice than it was to create it from the watery state. They managed to defeat the sea monster and moved on to the next room. There, Collin and two teams took on a phoenix. The Crimson bird flew high up and pelted them with fire. Every time they thought they had it defeated, the large bird would burst into flames and come back stronger than before. After the tenth time this happened, Collin got annoyed. They managed to catch the bird and freeze it using the nearby river. This caused the bird to finally fade away and they ventured forth to the last room.

Before entering, Collin took stock of his current set up. His wand had reached a mastery of around thirty percent as he was steadily using his five new spells and his four old spells to further progress it. He was relying heavily on his combat knife to not only defend but to stab and slash whenever an enemy was too close. He pulled up the crafting menu and began working on ways to increase its durability and damage output. He was beginning to realize a problem forming as he thought through his different sets. He had multiple gear sets with weapons associated with each. The time it took to change from one gearset to another was only a few seconds which was fine as he was taking on individual challenges which required an individual set and class. He was starting to wonder how he could utilize these new skills in the real world. He needed a universal outfit and weapon set that could grant him access to each class, skill and element and ability as they were needed.

“Guys, what happens after this is over?” Collin asked

“What do you mean?” Atlas said

“What do I do when the tower is completed? This whole challenge was to get Trixie and Max back but I have gained so much more and we are not even halfway up. What do I do with all of this when I head back out there?” Collin explained

“The King has a mission for you. We do not have any information on that however.” Amergin said

“I understand that. I know that we are almost done with the healer and support class. We also have only two more elements to learn but what happens after. My abilities depend on switching between classes and gear sets. I have a bit of access to all of the elements but currently if I am a healer class I am unable to use a sword and when I am a fighter class I cannot heal. How do I consolidate all of this into a single class and gearset that helps me utilize everything at any given moment.” Collin said

Amergin, Atlas, Apollo, Tiny, Midbar, Cynthia, Jasper and Sigurd all formed in front of Collin. They all had a sort of smile across their faces. The triplets also formed but were more wanting to run around then pay attention to what was going on.

“What?” Collin asked

“You are very bright Mr. Collin. We have been waiting for you to figure it out and it seems you have. We had planned for this to click somewhere in the next section of floors however.” Atlas said

“I do not follow.” Collin said

“Let’s focus on getting his healer class to stage three. It should appear once we get there.” Amergin said.

“What should appear?” Collin asked

They were silent and slowly faded back into thin air. Collin thought about pressing them on the information but instead pushed himself into the last room. The last room consisted of multiple elementals. Three Fire fiends in the shapes of a lion, tiger and panther circled around an ice bear, and two giant toads. There was also a giant turtle sitting there staring in their direction.

“What is the goal?” Collin asked

“You can have four teams of five. You are limited to your healing class, fire and water elements. You cannot summon your clones and the goal is to defeat the seven in front of you.” Atlas said

“My choice in teams?” Collin asked

“You can choose anyone stage three or lower.” Apollo said.

“Okay. Here we go.” Collin said, pulling up his screen and quickly picking his four teams.

Collin sent the knights and fighters forward as he stood back with the healer and mage classes. The Rogues disappeared shortly after the fight began. Collin would not see them until the battle was over. They were given strict instructions to find weak points and not be seen. Collin Fossil Gingers and Hannah began sending barrier and healing spells as the three fire fiends came rushing forward. Hank shot a volley of hydro arrows which dissolved on impact. Gerti brought up her water wall, stopping the cat-like creatures and causing them to run around. They turned the corner of the wall and were pelted by multiple water and ice spells coming from the mages. Steel ran forward and slashed the tiger with his sword. The blade passed clean through the beast not hitting anything.

“They are made of fire. There is nothing physical to hit them with.” Collin said.

He quickly directed the physical attackers to focus on the two giant toads and the turtle while the mages kept attacking with their elemental spells. Collin sent the triplets forward and they cleared the wall to assist the fighter and shield classes as they focused on the toads. The turtle had not left its position. Collin sent a series of ice spikes and water blasts forward aiming his wand at the middle of the torso. He managed to knock the lion backwards but the tiger managed to dodge the attack and was still moving forward. Collin cast slow on the tiger just as it was about to pounce causing it to miss a step and roll forward. The mage classes focus a powerful water blast pushing the tiger against the wall. Collin joined in and started sending ice shards into the stream of water coming from the mages. They let up to see five fire orbs and three dark orbs sitting on the ground. The mages immediately began meditating to increase their mana reserves. They would be out of the fight for at least a minute and Collin had to protect them at all cost. With the help of the other healers Collin cast a barrier around the mages and moved forward to strike the panther who had jumped forward to attack. He brought up his knife and infused water mana into the blade as he started to parry the strikes. Collin dipped, dodged and dove to the side all while casting slow and barrier. He was unable to cast haste on himself so he cast in on the other healers allowing them to buff their own spells as he distracted the panther.

On the other side of the room, Bonnie and Gerti were occupying one of the toads while Hank and the fighters took the other one. Bonnie boosted herself high into the air and brought her earth hammer down with resounding force on the frog. Gerti followed up with rock spikes from below. The frog shrieked as it was crushed between the two blows. Hank embedded fire into his sword and began slashing the other toad left and right managing to get some superficial cuts to the exterior while the shield classes distracted the frog with their taught ability. The rogues classes were popping in and out delivering devastating stabs and slashes as they moved from one target to another. They were even managing to attack the turtle who had stood up and was slowly walking in Collin’s direction. Hank managed a divesting stab to the middle of the frog just as the mages recovered enough to begin shooting their ice blasts. Collin disengaged from the panther and began slowing it and the lion's movements so the mages could land solid hits. He cast a multi heal on everyone and pumped half of his mana into them, the spell causing everyone to become rejuvenated. They finished the two fiends off soon after and stopped to face the turtle who was almost on them. The turtle opened its beak and let out a cove of poisonous gas from its mouth. The gas enveloped the entire roof with a thick purple haze. Collin and the healers quickly began casting heal, cleanse, and barrier magic to block the attack. Hank threw a fireball and landed a direct hit to the turtle's head causing him to close his mouth. The rogues reappeared in front of Collin quickly gasping for breath. Collin casted barrier and cleansing magic to protect them. The remaining fighters and knights rushed the turtle and started slashing wildly at his exposed sections. Collin cast bleed 1 after another until he was out of mana. The blood came gushing out of the turtle as it tried to retreat inside its shell. Hank and Bonnie jumped on top of the shell and started attacking it from the top using as many skills as they could muster. The turtles slowly faded away into nothing as the afflictions took their toll on the beast.

“Jack of All” Amergin said. “It is what happens when someone is able to reach stage three in all class archetypes.

Collin brought up the class information

“Do you know the story of your great uncle?” Amergin asked

“Liam’s brother? I only know that Leroy gave his crown to Liam and that his son is alive somewhere. Oh, and that he has a matrix named Alexander who is evidently here.” Collin said. No history was ever taught to Collin about the brothers or if it had been, he had not paid attention to it.

“King Leroy was one of the greatest generals to ever live.” Apollo said.

“He, like you, obtained mastery in all archetypes. He loved the concept of matrices and the separation of classes. In his pursuit to learn them all he developed new classes such as the bard, smith, and artificer. He was the first to obtain the Jack of All Class. It was kept a secret from the public, which is why you have never heard of it. There were theories that he almost reached a sixth stage but he died before anything could be recorded. Alexander still will not tell us anything about that.” Atlas explained.

“That’s really cool. Did King Liam ever reach that class?” Collin asked

“No. King Liam was crowned King, which unlocked his own stage six class. He has generals for a reason and therefore did not need to pursue such a class.” Atlas explained

“Anyway back to the story, he was one of the best generals that ever lived because he knew how each class operated. His work eventually led to the creation of the dreadnought suits.” Apollo continued.

Apollo and Atlas snapped their fingers and the screen changed for Collin. He skimmed through it and found hundreds of different blueprints for gear and weapons.

“These are all of his published findings and blueprints. Maybe this will help you.” Atlas said.

Collin skimmed over the list of blueprints. The sheer number of options was a bit overwhelming. He made a mental note to put aside a few weeks to fully dive into it. He picked a simple dagger blueprint that appeared to extend into a katana. He drew an intricate circle on the floor with powdered salt. He added a core from each element, metal, leather and a couple of gems to the circle, positioning how the blueprint showed. He also placed his newly created katana from a few floors along with the dagger he had been using as a healer. The blueprint required a dagger and katana weapon as materials. He sent mana through picturing the item and watched as it crafted. He held the new dagger in front of him and marveled at the intricate pearl colored blade and the gray and black leather handle. He went through a few stances and motions striking the air and testing the feel of the blade. The blade condensed downward and transformed into a long four foot katana. The katana had a gray and white handle with a jet black single edge blade. Collin tested it a bit before looking down at the description.

“You will need a new set of gear also sir.” Amergin said

Collin looked through the many blueprints. Some of the material costs were absolutely ridiculous. He could spend years just searching and collecting the many different sets. The completionist in him was looking forward to doing just that once he got out of the tower. He decided on a simple gear set that utilized all of the classes. With another magic circle full of gear, metals, gems and elemental cores, Collin started creating his new set. He made a simple but sturdy black pair of combat boots, and a brown slim pair of greaves with padded pockets in the buttocks, knee and thigh areas. There was even a sewn pocket on the thigh for him to store his wand. Collin created a simple white long sleeve shirt made of cotton and silk. He also made a dark black vest with thick padded pockets on the front, rear, and sides. Metal plates were slid into the pockets to apply some additional padding and protection. Collin made the metal plates out of the strong titanium alloy which kept the vest light without diminishing on the strength. He slid them into his greave pockets also. Collin finished the set with a black leather belt, leather gloves with no finger tips and an underarm harness and sheathes for his daggers, bow, and quiver.

“You need a helm. Try this one sir.” Hank said.

Collin looked and confirmed before creating a small bycocket hat with metal pieces inlaid in the bill. It fit nicely on his head and allowed for easy visibility. He applied some mana and a visor formed shielding his entire head in titanium alloy with a dragon glass face shield. Collin checked the status screen to see what benefits

“Ray is going to be so jealous when we get out of here.” Collin said with a smile.

“You are getting much more powerful sir.” Ambergin said

“Yes, However you will need to adapt to the outside world. Things are different compared to the battle tower.” Atlas said

“Let’s get moving. I think we are as ready as we are ever going to be.” Collin said.

Outside the Tower

“They are entering in his domain.” Seprus said.

“Can he do it?” The Grand Supreme asked

“It appears he has unlocked that class. He only has holy, light, dark, and void elements to master. He has all but Alexander, Regis, Trixie and Max. They are holding the line currently.” Seprus said.

“Grand Supreme, What the hell is going on?” Draconis asked walking into the room

“We have some matrices attempting to take over the tower. We never should have used the fugitives.” The Grand Supreme answered.

“The King is not going to like this.” Draconis said

“Is he here?” The Grand Supreme asked

“He is entering the tower now.” Draconis said

“He shouldn’t sir. He does not have his matrix.” Seprus said

“Collin may very well succeed sir.” The Grand Supreme said.

“He is not alone. I think he has someone he wants to introduce to Collin. A potential queen of sorts. The King really cannot help himself but meddle.” Draconis said.

“Seprus, is there anything we can do out here?” The Grand Supreme asked

“We have already notified the other towers to begin removing the fugitive matrices. They are all to be shipped to the Northern Tower for reconfiguration. There should not be any issues like this moving forward.” Seprus said. “We have also received some wonderful data from Collin’s progress. Everything is being shared real time with the other towers.”

“How long will it take the King to reach Collin?” Draconis asked

“Depending on how fast the King can clear the floors, he may catch up by the time Collin reaches the thirtieth floor.” Seprus stated

“Seprus, Please notify Regis that the King has entered the tower.” The Grand Supreme said before turning back to the data screen.

“Keep the Line!” Collin yelled as he cast a barrier around the shield classes.

The moment the elevating platform reached the twenty-five floor, chaos ensued. There was an army of undead, monsters, and other conjurations attacking from all sides. They had been waiting for them from the get go and Collin was barely able to dodge the incoming assault. He managed to form a makeshift fortress using his earth mana. The walls went up all around him while he summoned his conjurations. A quick look at the objective screen showed that there was none. This was a battle to the end. Collin peered over the side of the wall to see a newly formed Clerinda and Xavier standing there shouting orders to the horde that was coming down on them. Collin was now getting his conjurations in formation while the fortress did what it could to provide them time.

Collin sent his stage four fighter classes out of the fortress to create a perimeter. Midbar, Roran, Ruby, Crimson and Blood each activated an ability called blood frenzy. They would receive a massive boost in strength and agility at the cost of half their mana. They exited the wall at different positions and began a counterclockwise circle around the wooden fortress. Collin have his other fighter and shield classes form a tight circle around him as he regrouped and summoned his commutations. He sent all rogue classes out to deliver as many afflictions and small cuts as they could muster. With his elemental powers reinforced his fortress with thick walls made of rock and stone. The archer and mage classes took position just as the blood frenzy subsided. The stage fours came back into the fortress and immediately received healing and mana recovery spells from the healer classes. Through their efforts, Collin was able to create a fortress fifty feet in diameter with fifty foot high walls.

“Where are they?” Collin asked

“The all appear to be positioned to the east and south sir.” Amergin mentally related to him

“Stage three tanks, fighters, and rogues please go clean up the north and west sides” Collin mentally commanded.

They needed to enclose the attack so that they were only fighting from two adjacent sides. This would increase the concentration of enemies however it would also allow for his conjurations to be the most effective. He sent his clones one and three to assist. Clone two was on the wall assisting the archers and mages while four was helping hold the line. Clone five was assisting in healing and supporting the front lines with the other healer classes. Collin conjured the triplets giving them specific orders to protect the healer classes. Collin finished his orders and when everyone was conjured he headed to the north side and jumped into the fray.

One of the first things Collin noticed about his new Jack of All class was that he could utilize all of the boosts received from each class. He was also able to utilize every skill and ability he had ever learned. He sped through the battlefield on a roaring wave of sand as he rushed through the horde of zombies and skeleton warriors. He held his newly formed weapon in his right hand switching back and forth between its ebony and ivory forms while holding his wand in his left hand quickly dishing out afflictions and buffs as he saw them. They succeeded in taking the north and west parts of the sections while keeping the fortress protected. Amergin and Atlas managed to create a wall of wood and rock that halved the entire floor in two. This allowed Collin to collapse the fortress leaving an initial wall while he retreated back to the edge of the room. He made a series of small walls spaced out thirty-feet apart and had his conjurations retreat to a more organized position. While he climbed up to the newly built tower for a better vantage point. From seventy-five feet up he was able to see the horde being grouped up to make a massive push against them. He had the shield units hold a line with the archer and mage classes in preparation for a massive range attack. Everyone was still good on health and mana thanks to the healing class. Collin looked to see the support classes to the middle of the fray. The dancers and bards were performing a slow two step of a jig to a happy melody as the supporting effects starting buffing and boosting the overall contingent. Bonnie Hank and Gerti joined him on the wall and began meditating and utilizing the battle store and crafting systems in place.

“Sir, I think we need to rethink this.” Amergin said

“There is no challenge sir. There is not a time limit and at the rate we are defeating them, she is conjuring them just as fast if not faster.” Atlas said

“You're right, we need to push and take the advantage.” Collin said he began thinking of a plan

“This floor is roughly three hundred feet in diameter. We have half of it to ourselves. We need to slow the incoming horde and take out the two generals in order to move forward to the next floor. We have eighty-one units if we count myself and the clones. We..” Collin stopped talking to himself and began issuing mental commands.

Using sand and nature manipulation, everyone worked to create intricate walls throughout the open field. Collin directed the paths to make sharp turns left and right to encompass the entire area. He made the walls go as high as the ceiling. He created sections in the walls throughout the newly created labyrinth where he placed archers, mages, and other range type classes. The fighters, tanks, and rogues were all spread out holding the line at different sections of the labyrinth. The horde came rushing through the wall as soon as he had recalled his forces to their new positions. They bottlenecked as the gap decreased in size and began trampling one another. Collin felt Xavier come forward issuing orders and trying to organize the horde as they entered into the labyrinth. Collin let him usher his troops into the maze allowing him to guide them even past the obvious dead ends and traps. When Xavier reached mid way through the Maze, Collin issued the order to attack.

“Sigurd, can you take him?” Collin mentally asked

“Yes.” He felt the reply more than heard it in his mind

“Roran, Midbar, and Jasper will back you up. I’m creating a space now. Atlas and Apollo please handle the horde. Amergin, Timy and the triplets are with me. We are going to take on the Necromancer” Collin said.

He created a twenty foot by twenty foot room and changed the course of Xavier’s group making them go into the room. He immediately cut the room off and allowed the remaining horde move forward through the original path. Xavier and about fifteen ghouls and other zombie were suddenly attacked as Jaspers summoned Elk, wolf, and tiger jumped down from above. Jasper Midbar and Roran came in and focused on clearing the horde. Xavier raised his sword to strike but was tackled from the side by Sigurd whose metallic frame knocked Xavier flat against the wall. Sigurd followed up with a series of punches, kicks, and body smashes. The conjuration doing everything in its power to keep the Warden class from recovering while the others cleared the room.

Collin rushed out of the labyrinth through a side exit he had created. His clones, Tiny, and Amergin lead the way through the horde while the triplets brought up the rear. Collin cast haste and barrier on the party and directed them to spread out and take on the remaining horde that had yet to enter the maze. Collin made a beeline to the necromancer Clerinda. She saw him and stopped her summoning of undead. She pointed her staff in Collin’s direction and began muttering something. Using his wand, Collin cast slow, bleed, and disrupt senses. The spells did not take effect unfortunately and Collin was forced to sheath his wand and pull out his dagger. Collin transformed his dagger into its katana form and used an air jump to throw himself forward. He summoned a small earth buckler on his left forearm and began attacking the necromancer with fluid vertical, horizontal and even diagonal slashes. Clerinda’s reflexes were incredibly fast for her rank. She dropped her staff and manifested two swords made out of sharpened down bone. Her agility increased even more which caused Collin to switch back to his Dagger form for the additional fifteen percent in agility. Collin was still outmatched and was only just able to keep going with the help of his sand armor ability. Every time she landed a hit, the sand was there to take the blow. Collin used his scan target ability but was unsuccessful. He tried to use his air jump to get around her but she grabbed him half way through the jump and slammed him down on the ground with a hard thud. Collin lost his breath for a second and nearly blacked out from the blow but managed to force his way into a roll just in time to dodge a finishing blow from her swords. Collin took a step and felt immediate pain as his right calf exploded. Clerinda muttered a spell and Collin screamed out in pain. It felt as if a ball inside his leg had blown into a thousand pieces and he dropped to his other knee. At that moment Hank and Bonnie came rushing up and began fighting the necromancer. Gerti came rushing up to Collin and cast her Nature’s Heal skill on him. Flowers rose up in a circle around him and his wounds began to heal at a very slow rate. Collin cast his own Nature’s heal skill and watched as small trees shot up around him creating a temporary barrier as his severed calf muscle tried to repair itself.

“Why is it not healing?” Collin said out loud. A notice popped up on his screen.

Collin

Realization as to what Clerinda had done came to Collin. If not for Gerti and his Nature heal spell, Collin’s muscle strain would have eventually killed him. Pulling out his wand, Collin began casting spell after spell to assist Hank and Bonnie who were doing their best to keep the necromancer distracted. Amergin and Tiny were half way through cleaning up the summoned horde. Collin had no idea how the others were doing with Xavier but he had to trust that they could get the job done. Hank faced Clerinda head on using his shield and sword while Bonnie zipped around bashing her with her Hammer. The two entered a sort of battle trance syncing their movements and abilities until they appeared to be one unit of sheer power. Hank would block a sword strike and Bonnie would come around his other side slamming the Hammer down onto Clerinda’s foot. She would Roll between the Necromancer's legs right as Hank stabbed his sword forward at her Clerinda’s midsection. The Necromancer was completely off balance as she failed to land a single hit.

“They are mimicking her agility.” Gerti said as she sat down next to Collin in the healing barrier.

“I can’t keep up with them.” She said with a frown

“Do you still want to help them?” Collin asked

“More than anything. They are stronger and faster than me though.” Gerti said.

“How about we try a different path? They have their strengths and weaknesses. Let’s find out what your strengths are and how you can best help them.” Collin said in a gentle tone. He was trying his best not to show how hurt he was.

“Could we really?” Gerti said in excitement.

Collin pulled up his crafting section and created a small beginner wand. He purchased four skill stones holding the heal, barrier, haste, and slow spells and imbued them into the wand before handing it to her. She took it and Collin felt a tingle as she began mimicking his stats to better handle the new weapon. This took a moment as she changed herself away from where Hank and Bonnie’s stats were but closer to that of a spellcaster and healer class. Collin was unable to move while the healing circle was repairing his leg so together they cast spell after spell in the direction of Hank, Bonnie and the Necromancer.

Hank blocked a sword strike just as Bonnie managed to land a hit to Clerenda’s backside. Clerinda’s armor crushed a bit but she kept moving. Hank succeeded in creating a small cut to Clerenda’s right thigh with the help of a hast skill delivered by Gerti. Collin Cast bleed and was surprised to see it working. Clerinda’s small cut grew bigger and blood came pouring. Collin Landed a slow spell just as Clerinda swung her sword down on Hank. The difference in speed was enough for Hank to slip under Clerinda’s streak and stab his sword upward under her left arm and through the soft spot of her armor. Collin his another bleed spell and watched as blood soaked all over the floor. Clerinda Smiled and began chanting an incantation. Twelve armored skeleton’s rose from the blood around her. Blood red cloaks forming around their bodies forming crimson armor.

“Sir, watch out for her blood rituals. The more she bleeds the more skills she is able to utilize.” Amergin said through their mental connection.

“A little too late for that.” Collin muttered to himself.

Amergin and Tiny had finished the remaining horde and were standing beside Collin shooting arrows in the newly formed skeleton’s direction. Collin cast a cleansing spell on Hank and Bonnie and directed them to back away. Amergin summoned his bear and sent him barreling toward the necromancer’s new set of minions. Hank and Bonnie came back to stand next to Gerti who had left the healing circle. They both cast a nature heal around Collin adding an additional ten percent per second. Collin started to feel a bit better as the healing took effect. Clerinda resummoned her staff and began summoning more minions using her blood that was almost everywhere. She tried to cast another Blood Reduction on Collin but a quick thinking barrier from Gerti stopped it.

“How is everyone else doing?” Collin asked.

He tried to stand but felt a popping sensation and fell back to his knees. Amergin created a healing circle of his own which increased the rate to fifteen percent and renewed the duration another sixty seconds. The Blood Reduction affliction was coming to the end of its duration with only twenty seconds remaining.

“They are finishing up now. Sigurd has defeated Xavier and the remaining horde should be down to less than a hundred or so.” Tiny said

Collin closed his eyes and released the magic holding the labyrinth together. The high walls disappeared revealing about fifty ghouls surrounded by all of his conjurations. They finished the forces off and came rushing forward to assist with the Necromancer. Jasper’s summons rushed past and joined the bear who was mauling the skeleton warriors before they could reshape themselves. The fighter and shield classes followed up behind the animal summons, breaking off into teams to take on the newly formed horde of skeletons, ghouls, and zombies. Hank, Bonnie and Gerti sat down in a circle and began meditating. The healer classes formed behind Collin along with the mage classes. They began raining spell after spell down on the horde until there was nothing left. Collin vanquished his clones and the rogue classes in order to conserve mana. The bards and dancers started up an epic power ballad of string instruments, blaring horns, and hard sounding drums. Cynthia began singing her heart out bolstering everyone's stats and reducing the senses of the enemy forces. It was an interesting feeling. Collin knew that they were playing loud and overwhelming music but to him and the other conjurations, it felt like background noise. Like a show playing miles away. It was clearly not the case for Clerinda who was holding her hands up to ears while trying to block the incoming attacks from the fighters. Collin raised his wand and cast two spells. He was surprised to see them succeed.

Since Clerinda was already deafened by the intense music of the bards and Cynthia, The disrupt sense spell triggered the mute defect. The Necromancer tried to speak but was unable to. She could not give orders to her minions and was unable to summon anymore. Clerinda became unsettled which allowed for Collin’s second spell confusion to take hold. Clerinda became visibly upset and began attacking her own minions. The frustration built as she was unable to issue orders or summon new minions to rebuild her forces. Collin poked Gerti who opened her eyes to watch. They both started sending spells to assist the fighters as they slowly gained the advantage. They really did not have to do much as Clerinda became more and more outraged by her situation. Collin watched as Ruby delivered the final blow.

Everything faded into thin air and a small white and red matrix came tumbling on the ground to land in front of Collin.

Floor 25 Complete

Rewards:

+1 Stage 4 “Clerinda” Necromancer Matrix +1 Stage 4 Warden “Xavier” Matrix

75,000 Battle Coins (BC), 50 Health Potion, 50 Mana potion, +10,000 Assorted Crafting Material, +10 Fire Elemental Core, +10 Water Elemental Core, +20 Dark/Void Elemental Cores

+1 No Name Warden Conjuration Level 1, +1 No Name Necromancer Conjuration Level 1

Collin opened his black trunk and placed the two matrices in them before closing it shut and placing it back in his inventory. The black trunk that once held his voided gear set was designed to seal in the mana and radiating properties of an item. It was the perfect place to hold the fugitive matrices until it was time to leave the tower. Collin pulled up the store and looked for matrices capable of handling the necromancer and warden conjurations. There were plenty to choose from for the Warden class and Collin finally decided on an old classmate’s Matrix to fill the role. Larry Latherson was a year older than Collin when they were at the compound. He reached the Warden class shortly after the war but was killed by his twin brother, Harry Latherson, less than a year later. Collin remembered the whole ordeal was quite the scandal. Larry had been messing around with Harry’s wife, Tammy. Tammy was unable to tell the difference despite Larry being the only magically adept of the two. Harry found out and instead of confronting Larry and Tammy, he chose to kill them in their sleep. Harry later killed himself. Larry’s Matrix was named Iggy.

Iggy M - Warden Class Level 1 - Fire and Earth Elemental Affinities

Collin looked through the list of possible Necromancer class Matrices. He filtered out all that were known fugitives and found exactly zero results. Evidently there was a negative stigma associated with the class which caused almost all of them to be classified as a fugitive. Collin tried filtering to see if there were any from the five years he was in the compound. He had better luck as four options appeared for him to choose from.

Lilith - Fugitive

Class: Necromancer

Affinity: Dark/void, Fire

Human: Sasuke Prompto. Died at age 27

Asaka - Fugitive

Class: Necromancer

Affinity: Dark/void, Earth

Human: Stanlee Fox. Died at age 34

Mara - Fugitive

Class: Necromancer

Affinity: Dark/Void. Water

Human Mitchell Thomason. Died at age 36

Anastasia - Fugitive

Class: Necromancer, Priest

Affinity: Dark/Void, Light/Holy

Human: Evalyn Canter. Died at Age 23

Collin skimmed through the four before making his final choice. Lilith was certifiably insane. Her human Sasuke was responsible for burning down an entire village in hopes to copy the summon process of Clerinda. Mara obtained the fugitive status after her human Mitchell managed to bring back his entire platoon as a last ditch effort to fight the Regalians who had him pinned against the wall. This wouldn’t have been such a big deal, War is War. He however did not stop with just defending himself. He then turned all of his attackers into ghouls and proceeded to parade them around the land killing Regalian women. Children and elders before turning them into ghouls and repeating the process. The number of zombie babies that had to be killed was sickening to even think about. That left Asaka and Anastasia. Asaka’s data showed that he was worse than the other two combined. Collin couldn’t even pull information on what he did. Collin selected Anastasia and looked deeper into her details. She was originally a healer. She spent many years advancing her healer class up to stage three before following a subclass in the rogue and mage classes. Her human, Evalyn, was a medical researcher who specialized in combat medicine and advanced healing techniques.

“Why did she become a Necromancer and how did she get a fugitive mark?” Collin asked out loud

“Collin, Do you not remember what she did?” Gold asked. He and Marissa had formed next to Collin to help him search.

“Wait, You know her?” Collin asked

“She was a few years younger than us. The little brown headed girl that used to follow Ray around. She was obsessed with his elemental affinities and was always asking for his help with her experiments.” Marissa said

“Wasn’t she studying to be a Warlock or a Sage class?” Collin asked. Both classes required duel-classing in Mage and healer.

“She was trying to study the effects of afflictions made by the rogue class. She thought she could understand how to heal them if she knew how to cause them so she took on a third subclass of rogue. Rogues do not get the affliction related skills and abilities until they reach the stage two assassin class. I heard a rumor that she accidentally chose the Necromancer class instead of the Warlock class. This caused her Rogue and Mage classes to combine into Necromancer and left her a subclass in the stage three priest class.” Marissa explained.

“That is terrible. How did she die?” Collin asked

“One of her classmates turned on her. He was some big shot healer fighter type and he freaked out when she finished her transformation. He killed her immediately and somehow convinced someone that she had tried to attack him. That is how she got the fugitive mark.” Gold said

“So she never even got a chance to use her necromancer class. That is terrible.’ Collin said. Without any more thinking Collin selected Anastasia and combined her with the No Name Necromancer class.

Anastasia F - Necromancer Class Level 1, Priest Class Level 1 - Dark/Void and Light/Holy affinities

“Hello Mr. Collin.” Anastasia said

“Hi Anastasia. You are a good matrix right?” Collin asked

“Yes. Thank you for reading enough into Evalyn’s data to figure that out. All of my fellow matrices know, but the human’s are the ones to make the rules, not us so I have been a fugitive matrix this entire time.” she replied

“Can you handle a necromancer conjuration? Evalyn never had a chance to use any of the skills.” Collin asked.

“We will figure it out as we go. I am eager to see what data can be collected from studying the afflictions this class can cause.” Anastasia stated.

“Sweet. Iggy, are you good to go?” Collin asked

“Yes sir!” Collin heard Iggy shout in his mind.

Floors twenty-six, twenty-seven, and twenty-eight were relatively normal floors with no signs of Delilah or Zephyr. The team took on an army of humanoid fish called Ningyo. They were unique in the fact that there were different ranks associated within the species. There were those with shark-like qualities such as one Ningyo that had a flat head similar to a hammerhead shark. There were octapads, who had the face of an octopus with tentacles instead of hair. There were even whale-like humanoids who weighed nearly a thousand pounds and wrestled anyone that came near. Lightning based attacks were key for this bunch and the knight and fighter classes received plenty of experience from the fight. The next floor was a one on one match with a birdlike humanoid called an Avian. This humanoid had large wings and the head of an eagle. Collin had to utilize his slow and disrupt sense spells in order to find an opening. On the twenty-eight floor, he had the triplets fight against three stage three fighter classes. One was a duelist who used a sharp rapier, the other was a Monk that utilized a spear, and the other was a bare handed boxer. Gerti managed to finish the duelist utilizing her wand and large polearm. Bonnie bashed the monk on the head with her hammer causing it to disappear before getting a chance to strike and Hank went blow for blow with the boxer deciding on using his fists also. Each was pleased with themselves when the floor was complete and Collin was happy to not have to do anything.

Collin rose up to the twenty-nine floor expecting an ambush to occur. There was not one. He looked around and saw an empty floor with no challenge or enemy in sight.

“What’s with this?” Collin asked

“I do not know sir. “ Amergin said

“Let’s try and go to the next floor.” Tiny said

Collin went to step on the elevation platform and nothing happened. He jumped up and down and nothing happened. He tried summoning his entire force and they all just stood there. With nothing else to do, Collin conjured tables and chairs and an assortment of food. The conjurations used to this sort of thing immediately sat down and started conversing with each other. The new conjurations wondered around and then found a table and joined in with everyone else. Collin took a seat next to Tiny and Amergin and began looking at his system to see what was going on. He checked the store and found no legendary matrices. He checked his gear and everyone else's gear and made some upgrades while he had the time. Gerti had mastered the four spells in her wand so Collin upgraded it with another set of four spells similar to how he had done with his wand. He saw that he had also mastered his spells and added another set. He had a number of conjurations ready to make a stage enhancement and after consulting each of them, activated the transition. Collin did everything he could think of and sat there reviewing his work and while eating a plate of pork sausages.

“Anyone have any ideas?” Collin asked

“There does not appear to be a challenge. There also does not appear to be any enemies. The elevating platform is not working to take us up to the next floor. Honestly sir, I have no idea.” Amergin said, confused.

The rest of the conjurations shook their heads in agreement. They were for lack of a better word, Stuck. After about an hour of waiting and nothing happening, Collin decided to go around and talk to his conjurations one on one. Each of the matrices he chose had been bonded to a person that he knew either at the compound or during the war. It is not possible to speak to a matrix that is bonded to another human so even though he knew the name of the matrix, he had never had the opportunity to speak to them. He only knew Tiny through the connection with Timothy for example. Collin learned that many Matrices were given the option to choose another human after their bond died. The matrix was limited to the same bloodline of the original bond. They were surprised that he never knew this as many matrices usually tell their bonded human this information. Collin wondered why Trixie had never shared and if she was from his Mother or Fathers side. There was also the possibility that she was brand new and he made a mental note to ask her once they were reunited. All the new information about the Matrices made Collin a bit more at ease with the current affairs. He originally thought that there were millions of matrices stuck in limbo unable to ever bond again because their human had died. He had imagined them trapped in a box somewhere waiting until the end of time. The knowledge that they could be selected again to be a great nephew or grand daughter's matrix made him happy. They were able to share the knowledge of the entire family with the next generation. He still did not know where they came from and none of the matrices he spoke to had an idea either.

After he had a chance to speak with each and every conjuration, Collin pulled up the battle store.

“My conjuration storage increased again. We can have up to one hundred and fifty Conjurations and Matrices.” Collin said out loud.

“Would you like for us to pick them again sir?” Tiny asked

“Does anyone know if there will be a maximum number? I do not think I can memorize thousands of names and abilities. I would obviously try but there are just so many.” Collin said

“What in the heavens is all of this?!” A voice said from the elevating platform

Collin whipped his head around to see King Liam standing before him marveling at the many conjurations who were sitting, eating and talking amongst themselves. Everyone turned and stood at attention as the King walked forward. Two women that Collin had never met before accompanied him.

“Your Highness, What are you doing here?” Collin asked.

“I heard there was trouble in the tower and so I came to assist.” The King said. He walked up and stood in front of Amergin mesmerized.

“Is that you, old friend?” The King asked.

“Hello Your majesty. I hope you do not mind. We all chose to take on the form of our former human.” Amergin said

The King took Amergin in his arms, lifting him up off of the ground and spinning him around happily. He then went and greeted Apollo, Atlas, Midbar, and all of the matrices that he recognized. Collin stood there smiling. Many of the matrices who advised the King consisted of his long lost friends. Seeing them in a physical form must be bringing back emotions he hadn’t felt in a long time. Collin looked to the two girls who were standing wide eyed at the King’s lack of formality. The girl on the right was tall and muscular with dark black hair braided down the middle of her back. She wore dark brown leather greaves and a white V neck tunic and black cloak. She wore a sword at her belt, a bow and quiver on her back and a set of small knives in a holster under her arm. Collin guessed her to be mid to late twenties like he was but could not recall ever seeing her before now. The girl to the left was a bit shorter with long wavy red hair tied with a light blue bow. She wore a matching color dress with a leather belt and a single dagger attached to her hip. She carried a staff and appeared to be a bit younger than the other girl but still in the mid to late twenties. Collin decided to introduce himself while the King had his fun.

“Hi, My name is Collin. What are your names?” Collin asked, reaching a hand out to greet the red headed girl.

“Hi, My name is Haley.” The redhead said, reaching out and shaking his hand. Collin looked at the dark headed girl next.

“Megan.” She said, She reached out her hand and Collin immediately noticed the brand on her wrist. It was the similar to his but did not have a number on it

“Are you also a princess?” Collin asked, still holding Megan’s hand but turning to face Haley.

“We are not Princesses.” She said, pulling her dress back off her shoulder to show the same brand just above the collar bone. On further inspection Collin noted that it was different then his own brand. It had no number and the colors were inverted.

Hank ran up and said hello to them shaking their hand. Bonnie and Gerti also walked up and said hi. They then ran over to the King. Hank began trying to convince the King to let him be his new matrix since he did not have any. The King smiled but denied his request.

“Grandpa, who are they and why are they here?” Collin yelled back.

“How dare you address him as anything other than his title!” Megan said sternly. Haley looked aghast at Collin and put her hand over her mouth.

“It is okay Megarena. He has the most right to call me by such names.” The king said, walking back towards the group.

“Why are you here sir.” Amergin asked

“We are here to help of course! Collin, these lovely ladies are consorts. They are from one of the founding families and have been trained all their life to become a potential queen to the future king. ” King Liam said.

“That cannot be how this works.” Collin said

“Yup. There are also men who are training to be subservient kings in the off chance that one of my great great granddaughters becomes the queen. “ King Liam said

“I am truly sorry.” Collin said to both girls. He then turned and conjured three chairs for everyone to sit down at his table. The King sat down and grabbed some bread and cheese and started chatting with Amergin about the good ole days.

“There were no enemies or challenges when we arrived and the elevating platform is not working.” Amergin said

“Hmm.” The King said and then went back to eating. Megan and Haley came and sat down next to Collin. They looked at the assorted foods and each picked a piece of fruit and took a bite.

“Grandson, Let me see your stats.” The king said.

Collin opened his screen and turned it for the King to see. The king spent time sorting through different sections and finally swiped it away.

“You unlocked my brother’s class,” he said sternly.

“I did. I also reached Master Summoner. We were just discussing whether to add to my current ranks. I am beginning to have trouble keeping track of them all.” Collin said

“Are you not utilizing generals to keep track of everything?” The King asked

“I am, however, I am also trying to learn everyone’s names. Doubling my forces to the maximum one hundred and fifty will just make it much harder.”

“You need to leave it to your generals. Your focus should be on advancing your abilities while they advance theirs.” The King said. “Let me see your list of conjurations and the battle Store.”

Collin allowed him to see the list.

“You went with your classmates I see.” The King said

“Yes. I knew their strengths and weaknesses. They were the best fit.” Collin said

“Everyone has reached stage three or higher which is good. You need to add some specialization to your ranks. You are missing a few classes.” The King said

“How do I do that? Collin asked.

“You do nothing. Leave it to your matrices to decide. Communicate with your generals and let them handle everything. You will have a chance to unlock more once you visit the other towers. They will naturally select what they want to advance to.” The king said

The king clicked on the screen and input more options.

“Here. I have chosen your next fifty conjurations and matrices. They will work well with your current setup.” The King said

Collin’s eyes went wide as he started reading the stats of each new class. He looked up after realizing what the King had just said earlier.

“What did you say about other towers?” Collin asked

“Oh yes. Once you complete this tower. You will be traveling and completing the others.” The King said.

“I do not have time for that. I am only doing this to get Trixie back.” Collin said.

“Nonsense. You will complete the other towers and these two will be joining you.” The King said “You will need an army of conjurations in order to compete for the throne.”

“What about Ray and our task of becoming Baron?” Collin asked

“You will need to complete that also. You have time.” The King said. He got up and started examining the elevating platform.

“Sir, Why did you send Regis and Alexander here? Why are you not bonded?” Collin asked going to stand by him

“Regis wanted out. They wanted a chance at something bigger.” The King said quietly. “Regis and I have not been bonded for many years. After the queen died, we had a sort of falling out. He chose to separate and assist me in other ways. My Rank as King did not require his assistance anymore. When we decided to train you with this method, he asked to join you. He and Alexander will become two of your most powerful conjurations. Treat them well”

“Are others able to summon conjurations with matrices attached to them?” Collin asked

“No. You are the only one.” The King said “This is experimental. We do not even know what will happen when you leave the tower.”

“Why?” Collin asked

“Because a King needs to know these things.”

“Where do Matrices come from?” Collin asked

“I am forbidden to say.” The King said

“What comes after Jack of All?” Collin asked

“I do not know. My brother was almost there, but he died. I think he made a wrong decision somewhere and it hurt his progress. Alexander will be able to assist you where he left off.” The king said

“You want me to reach it don’t you.” Collin said

“Yes.”

“Okay. Can you help get us to the next floor?” Collin asked

“Already done. This pause was so I could come see you. I will be heading down now. Good luck with Delilah. He was very tricky when I last fought him. Be weary of misdirection” The King said snapping his fingers

The platform lit up and started moving. The room around them came to life. The King stepped on the platform and it began lowering.

“The girls are yours. Get to know them. Marry one. Keep the other as a mistress. They are not to return home without you. If you do not wish to keep them then you would be better off killing them then letting them return to their families. It would be the highest of insults. There family would be forced to shun them or kill them. Don’t be that guy.” The King said “Oh! There is a third, but she is caught up on another mission. You will meet her later. Bye ladies!”

“Good Bye your highness” the Girls said

“Mr. King, take me with you!” Hank yelled, running after the King. Liam disappeared into the ground before Hank could reach him.

“That is utter bullshit. Why the hell would you agree to that? What Kind of King forces girls into such an agreement?!” Collin yelled “Also a third?! What do you even mean?”

“Yeah this is bullshit. I wanted to be the King’s Matrix!” Hank yelled

“Language!” All the other matrices and Collin screamed towards Hank. He got scared and ran to hide behind Haley.

“We were not forced.” Haley said.

“We volunteered.” Megan added. She had walked up to join her

“Why?” Collin asked.

“Our families are of the original court. Our entire lives we have been trained to one day become queen. Our mothers and their mothers and their mothers were trained similarly until they reached the age of thirty. They were married by arrangement and advised to have children. The process has repeated itself and will continue to repeat itself until a new King is named.” Haley said

“The King came to the families a few weeks ago and asked for three consorts. He explained to the families that they would be for the number two prince. Most of the others had already been sent to their respective princes and princesses. Many do not see you as a true heir and did not volunteer. We did.” Megan continued

“Megan is my best friend. She is like a sister to me. Chloe, my actual sister, also volunteered. It has been our dream since we were small to one day meet a prince and become his queen. If you choose one of us, we have all agreed that the others will stay in your service also. I do not want to be separated from my best friend or my sister and I think they feel the same,” Haley said

Megan shook her head in agreement.

Collin did not say anything for a long time. He did not want to be disrespectful but the thought of all of this was absolutely ridiculous. There were Entire families grooming their children to become the possible King regent or Queen Regent of the continent over a hundred of years worth of generations. Collin was unable to fathom it all. He looked at each girl and smiled before speaking.

“We need to move up the tower. You have met my conjurations. They will be assisting us. Once we get out of here, I would like to sit down and talk about what to do moving forward with each of you” Collin said

“Okay. What do we need to do?” Megan asked

Collin vanquished all of his conjurations. Hank squeezed Haley's leg before disappearing also. Collin pulled up the status screen.

“May I see your stats?” Collin asked. A pop up box appeared in front of both of them requesting permission. They both hit yes.

Bless, Mass Heal, Max Barrier, Water Manipulation, Light Manipulation, Smite, Angelic Wings, Prismatic Beam

“Did you two attend one of the compounds?” Collin asked

“No. We have private tutors who have been training us since we were eleven.” Haley said

“What made you choose these classes?” Collin asked

“Each family specialized in a particular area. My family perfected the Archer Archetype. The Westwood’s did the same thing with the Healer Archetype.

“So Chloe is also a type of healer?” Collin asked

“She is a Dark Crusader with affinities in Holy, light, dark, and void elements.” Haley said.

“That’s more tank than healer ain't it? Wait, there are like four archetypes involved in that class.” Collin said

“She traveled around a lot and picked up other classes. She is kind of a child prodigy.” Megan said with a hint of annoyance in her voice.

Collin looked over the list of new conjurations that King Liam had selected for him.

“I have no idea what some of these classes do.” Collin said

“I can help you with that.” Haley said. “I know most classes and their optimal skillsets.”

Haley then took Collin through a quick course of each class he did not know. After determining that he knew nearly nothing about all of it. She took him through a whole course of all of his classes. In the meantime, Megan reviewed his stats, conjurations, gear, and the battle store. She made a few changes and upgraded everyone's gear. Megan had a vast knowledge of crafting, armor, and weaponry. Collin was beyond impressed with just how much they knew. They spent another couple of hours training and getting to know each other's skills. Megan’s shadow minion skill conjured her own set of shadowy figures. She was limited to two who she called Shade and Darkness. They were identical and she was constantly switching the names but they were completely aware of this and followed her orders perfectly. Haley had a really cool skill called angelic wings which created wind of light allowing her to temporarily fly. She combined this with her light manipulation to turn practically invisible. Collin brought forth Atlas and Apollo and Haley absolutely lost it with questions. In addition to her staff, she had a wand she could use and did use with expert efficiency. Collin learned that Haley’s matrix was named Willow and was a bit surprised to find that he could talk to her directly. Collin’s bond with all of the matrices allowed him to talk to all others evidently. Megan’s matrix was named Carter. Both appeared to have been handed down from generation to generation. Willow and Carter were as old as Amergin Atlas and Apollo. Their knowledge of life and other matrices were parallel to none.

“The next floor may have Delilah and a mind controlled Zephyr. Is everyone ready?” Collin asked

“Sure.” Megan said

“Okay.” Haley added

The three rose up to the thirtieth floor. A challenge screen popped up advising that there would be five rooms to complete. The entire three hundred diameter room was split in five quadrants. The platform continued to rise until it reached a large structure. The three stepped out onto it and looked down on the entire room. There were contraptions moving left and right all through the different sections. Blades and saws swinging from the rafters, arrows shooting from one side of a wall to the other. It was a giant obstacle course leading in a spiral, down to the middle of the floor where standing in a giant circle was Delilah.

“Sir, We are not able to be summoned.” Amergin said.

“Why not?” Collin asked

“There appears to be sensors blocking the ability. I am counting twelve in total.” Tiny said

Floor 30 Challenge

Complete the obstacle course

Disable anti summoning beacons (0/12)

You and Your allies survive (3/3)

Save Zephyr

Defeat Delilah and his new friend

“We need to disable the beacons first.” Collin mentally projected Megan and Haley.

“Whoa. What was that?” Megan asked out loud

“I can communicate with you through your matrices. It is faster than speaking and better for being discrete.” Collin mentally said.

“Can you hear me like this?” Haley mentally projected.

“Very good!” Collin said. He then ran off the platform and thrust himself past a flying saw to the other side.

“Haley, use your flying ability and find the beacons. I can mark them so Collin can get them on the way down.” Megan said.

She turned and climbed up to the ceiling where she sat on a column overlooking the field. Haley activated her Angel wings ability and stepped off of the platform to follow Collin as he proceeded through the obstacle course. The winding path downward was intense. Columns and platforms of stone and mortar spiraled downward. Hordes of flying enemies came rushing forward from all angles. Collin used his wand to cast a barrier and haste spell on himself. He amplified this with a bit of wind mana and dashed through and around the walls of the tower. He slashed at a flying monkey with his dagger only to hit air as the monkey dropped out of the sky, an arrow piercing it between the eyes. Collin looked up and saw Megan raining arrows down with demonic-like precision.

“Keep going. I have three of the beacons marked for you straight ahead.” She mentally said.

Collin dashed forward striking the first beacon with a fireball before moving to the next. The beacon exploded into hundreds of pieces that all fell downward. Delilah stood in the middle enjoying the spectacle as Collin revolved closer around him. Haley came into sight briefly as he ran. She was slowing her fall to mere feet per minute as she scanned the area using her light manipulation to find the beacons. When she found one her light beam would attack it followed by an arrow from Megan which left a marking effect. Collin would come around with another attack to finish off the remaining health. They were halfway through the beacons when Collin heard a roar from below. He looked down to see Zyphr appear beside Delilah. The Dreadnought class was in full battle mode with a blade instead of a hand on the right side.

“Be careful. He is going to release a berserker attack with high amounts of lightning mana. If he touches you with his blade, even a small cut, it will cause instant paralysis.” Sigurd said in Collin’s mind.

“How do we take him?” Collin asked

“Get the last beacon and let me go, I can take him.” Sigurd said. Collin could feel the matrix bursting at the seams to break free.

“You two are getting out of my range. I am going to come down a bit more to help.” Megan said.

Collin looked up to see her dash from her original position. Haley was about twenty feet to the left. She sent a beam to another beacon and Collin jumped over another monkey to slash it with his katana. He felt his barrier crack and glanced to the side to see Zephyr’s sword slashing against it. Collin dropped with the strike narrowly missing the blade. He hit the floor hard and rolled off of the platform. With his wand he caste stop time above him catching zephyr in the middle of the sixty foot radius. Collin caught himself on the ledge below and looked up to see a volley of arrows frozen at the edge all aiming directly at Zephyr. Collin recovered and kept running to the next barrier. He heard an explosion behind him followed by a voice in his head

“The beacon you missed has been taken care of. We have two more to go.” Megan said

“I see them.” Haley replied

Collin saw the golden light shining on the remaining two beacons. He rushed forward, forming another fireball in his hand and sending it across the room to hit the furthest one.

“As soon as they are done. Send your shadows and take cover. Haley find somewhere to hide and do not look directly at Delilah.” Collin said urgently before slashing the final beacon.

2) Anti Summoning Beacons Deactivated

Collin let everyone out. One hundred and twenty-eight conjurations and five clones came in all directions. Collin immediately felt the drain as his mana plummeted to near zero. He lost consciousness for a bit but felt a hand grab him. He looked up to see the triplets and Amergin holding him as he finished the obstacle course and slid to a stop. Collin looked up to see Sigurd and the other dreadnoughts in a relentless attack with Zephyr. The stop time spell had ended and they were not letting him have a second to catch his bearings. The other conjurations began descending down the course attacking the flying enemies. Collin stood and looked towards Delilah.

“Delilah, what exactly is it you want?” Collin asked

The trickster smiled and stepped to the side to reveal a conjuration stepping forward. Collin’s eyes went wide as he looked on the face of his best friend. It wasn’t Ray though. It was how Ray used to be. Ray during the war. Ray at the pinnacle of his power. The conjuration was dressed in full battle attire with his face shield firmly in place over his Ray’s Hazel eyes. A Golden sword with a lion’s head on the hilt and a Gray shield with wolf’s head in as the center crest were ever present in both hands.

“Max..” Collin whispered “Max what did he do to you?”

“I made a new friend here.” Delilah said. “We are going to have tons of fun once we get out of this tower. He has a particular human I have just about convinced him to kill.”

Max stomped his foot on the ground causing a shockwave of air. A status window appeared in front of Collin.

Enemy Max has activated the following titles:

Title Master - All active and passive title abilities unlocked

Dragonslayer - +750% Resistance to Fire and Air based skills and abilities, attacks, +500% Increase in Fire and Air based skills, abilities, and attacks

The Great Mouse Detective +25% Perception, +50% Resistance to Trap Base Attacks

Ace Pilot - +25% Mana conversion, +15% to Air based attacks

Earth Titan +50% Resistance to incoming Earth based skills, +50% to All Outgoing Earth Related Skills

Lion’s Keeper +45 Strength, +15% Agility, +25 Intelligence

Wolf’s Protector - +30% Defense, +15% Agility, +45% Perception

…(+145 Additional Titles) (Click to Expand List)

“Well, Shit” Collin murmured to himself.

For most people, one title was allowed to be active at any given time, however if you were to complete the title challenge, even if you did not win the tournament, you were granted the title, Title Master. This allowed for every title in your possession to be active at the same time. When they took Max away from Ray, they took all of his titles with them. Ray recently obtained a few new titles such as “Goblin Slayer” and “Friend of Gnome” but they were nothing compared to the increases that all of his titles afforded him.. All of the power associated with Ray’s pursuit’s in the compound and the academy were being showcased against Collin in this conjuration. Collin quickly cast haste on himself and rushed forward to attack. Delilah evaded and Collin pressed him for an advantage. The other conjurations began facing Max who was barely moving. Every time Max swung the platoon sword which Collin himself gave him the day they graduated, Fire and Golden light would spray out of the blade causing a wave of energy to crash all around them. The wolf’s shield was another legendary artifact from their platoon. It could block any attack, absorbing the blow and use the energy to add bonus effects to the wielder. Collin sent a mental request to Megan and Haley to stay out of the fight. He knew they would be no match for Max who had already put ten of his conjurations on the twenty-four hour cooldown. Collin cast a barrier around himself and swung his Katana to strike Delilah. The blade was parried by Delilah's scepter and a blade flew out from under his sleeve narrowly missing Collin’s face. Collin cast slow on Delilah and haste on himself and began ripping cut after cut into the trickster's body. He blinked and the Trickster was back to normal not having been hurt at all. Collin pressed forward and kept at it trying to take Delilah down.

“Cynthia, Get your ass down here and help me with him. Bring whatever illusionary specialist you can muster.” Collin mentally sent.

He had no time to think as to who could be of any help. He thought he had an illusionist in his ranks and hoped one of the older Matrices were taking over the thinking duties that he was neglecting. Collin felt a wave of health and buffs hit him from above. He looked up to see the conjuration band playing a powerful battle tune. The dancers and singers were giving their all to try and tip the scales in Collin’s favor. Collin cast stop time around himself and the trickster freezing both of them. He mentally switched minds with one of his clones and over looked the battlefield from above. Everyone had managed to regroup. The fighter and knight classes were taking Max on. The Rogue classes had split and were all around the room finishing off the remaining ads or additional enemies. The healer, support, Archer and mage classes had gather around Megan and Haley encompassing an entire half of the circular room. Spells and arrows were raining down from above in all directions. Collin saw his clones coming to assist him with the trickster. The Ranger he was encompassing currently was staying just far enough to have a decent vantage point. Zephyr was defeated by Sigurd and the Dreadnoughts were dropping down to confront Max. Collin looked for his newly acquired conjurations. The two summoners were capable of having three summons each at level one. Wolves and Tigers were running around taking out any additional enemy that got too close. The tricksters, illusionist, artificers and Afflictionists had surrounded the time bubble. They were preparing multiple spells to assist Collin once time resumed. The remaining forces were with their individual archetypes helping either combat Max or assist from afar. The Triplets sat in a circle protected by Haley and Megan, the mana conversion in full effect to help maintain the overwhelming force. Collin returned to his original body and took a hard look at Delilah. The Trickster was unmoving except for his eyes which darted from one conjuration to the other. Collin knew that Delilah was trying to form a plan to get out of this. Collin knew that Delilah knew that he was finished. Switching to his Ivory Dagger, Collin nicked Delilah’s arm. A small thin cut formed. Collin pulled out his wand and began casting his own set of spells before ending the time stop.

“I do actually.” Collin said.

Collin was prepared for this Illusionary Tale. He had learned about it from speaking to Apollo and Atlas. The whole fight on the tenth floor had not set right with him. He had questioned Cynthia, Roran, and Jasper hundreds of times. He had spoken to the triplets also. It was not until he was able to talk to Apollo and Atlas that he had learned what had truly happened. On the tenth floor, the trickster, Delilah, had entered the room without anyone noticing. He had watched the battle happen. He had seen Collin almost fall for Cynthia’s trance ability. The spell that Amergin was successful in snapping him out of. Delilah let the match play out and then activated his Illusionary Tale ability which made everything that had occurred, only occur within Collin’s mind. Delilah was then able to take over Cynthia with the intent to kill Collin. If not for Trixie, this is how events would have occurred. Upon learning this, Collin had suspected that Delilah would try again the moment he realized he had been defeated. The first thing he did the moment the King had left was speak to the trickster and Illusionist.

“What is happening?!” Delilah screamed in Collin’s mind.

The effects of Collin’s spell were causing him to be unable to speak, see, or hear. This Collin felt was the most humane way for Delilah to experience the illusionary attack. With Delilah and Max as the selected target for the rebound, everything from the last half hour that they did was reversed. The Conjurations that were killed immediately had their cooldowns reset and were summoned back into the room. The title abilities that Max had activated were no longer active. This allowed Collin’s forces to swiftly pin him down and kill him. His Crimson and Silver Matrix was immediately recovered by Sigurd and thrown into the black chest with Zephyr. Delilah was knocked down with a shove from Collin. Using his nature mana, Collin summoned vines to be wrapped up and around Delilah holding him in place.

Collin stood in front of Delilah holding his ivory dagger in his left hand. He used ten units of mana to convert it into the katana form, Ebony. Collin manifested his voided shadow Katana to his right hand. His conjurations, Haley, and Megan all stood in a circle around the two. Collin crossed the katanas and rested their blades on Delilah's shoulders. It would only take Collin pulling on his swords and Delilah’s head would be on the floor. He needed some answers first.

“Is there anyone else?” Collin mentally projected. He squeezed the swords just enough to draw blood.

“There is always someone else.” Delilah said.

“Who is it?” Collin demanded

“You won’t find them here. I suggest the other towers.” Delilah said. He was no longer struggling. His posture was calm and at peace. Blood trickled down his neck and onto the floor.

“Human or Matrix? Give me a name!!!” Collin Shouted both out loud and mentally. The force of it causing Haley to flinch.

“One of these days, you are going to come ask me for help. On that day, you will have to pay a high price for it. You will get what you seek, but you are going to pay so greatly for my services. Until that day, young prince. Toodaloo!” Delilah mentally spoke.

His smile grew from ear to ear in a horrifying smirk as he faded inward into a black and violet Matrix that dropped to the ground. Amergin walked forward and placed the cube into the black chest before sending it to Collin’s Battle inventory. Everything faded leaving Collin alone with Haley and Megan in the middle of a now completed thirtieth floor of the battle tower.
