Tactical Embarrassment

Chapter 51.2: Journey’s Eve – Departure Again

Miyako's Perspective

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across our testing grounds as Kurenai made her way to the front of the assembled group, clipboard in hand. The energy in the air was palpable, a mixture of accomplishment, anticipation, and barely contained excitement.

"I am pleased to announce," Kurenai declared, her voice carrying across the crowd, "that all three vehicles have passed their final certification tests. Additionally, all thirty designated drivers have completed their training and are now officially licensed to operate these vehicles."

A cheer erupted from the gathered group, accompanied by applause and a few enthusiastic whoops. I found myself smiling as I watched my classmates celebrating this milestone. Seventy-five days ago, we were just high school students fumbling to survive in an alien world. Now we were a cohesive unit with magical abilities, custom-built vehicles, and a clear mission. Talk about your accelerated character development arc.

"I want to drive too!" Emi's enthusiastic voice cut through the celebration as she bounced on her toes, her hand raised high. "I know I'm responsible for cooking, but I can do both!"

"Are you sure, Emi-chan?" Hiroko asked, concern evident in her voice. "You'll already be exhausted from preparing meals for everyone."

"I can handle it!" Emi insisted, her determination shining in her eyes. "Everyone is working so hard, I want to contribute in every way I can!"

Something about her earnest enthusiasm touched me. Emi had grown so much since coming to Voluptaria, gradually finding her confidence and place within our group. Her crush on Andie had been obvious for weeks, but rather than letting it make her competitive or jealous, she channelled those feelings into supportive actions.

"I think Emi should get her turn at the wheel," I found myself saying. "She's right, everyone should contribute in multiple ways."

Emi's grateful smile warmed my heart, and I noticed Andie watching our interaction with that thoughtful expression he wore when observing the group dynamics. He caught my eye and gave me a subtle nod of approval, sending a little flutter through my chest. Even after everything we'd been through, that simple acknowledgment still affected me.

Kazuki stepped forward, tablet in hand. "Let's go over the final travel plan once more," he announced. "Based on Noel and Mei's calculations, we're looking at approximately sixteen days of travel to reach the Takejin border region."

"Remember," Ryota added, "we'll stop about one kilometre before reaching the first Takejin town. We want to make sure everyone is rested and presentable before making first contact."

"Heaven forbid we show up with bedhead and wrinkled clothes," Airi quipped, running a hand through her hair. "What would the Takejin think of us?"

"Well, considering Voluptarian beauty standards," Haruka chimed in with a grin, "they might just think we're deliberately going for that 'dishevelled charm' look."

"Like Akihabara street fashion?" Aoi suggested, giggling behind her hand.

"Isekai chic," Yuna declared with mock seriousness. "The latest trend sweeping the multiverse."

The laughter that followed released some of the tension that had been building throughout the day. This was what I'd come to love about our group, the ability to find humour even on the edge of uncertainty.

The great hall had been transformed for our celebration dinner. Strings of magical lights floated near the ceiling, casting a warm, golden glow over long tables arranged in a U-shape. The atmosphere was festive, with animated conversations filling the air and the occasional burst of laughter rising above the general din.

I found myself seated between Andie and Miyuki, with Ruri and Noel directly across from us. The seating arrangement felt significant somehow, a physical representation of our complicated relationship web. As I settled into my chair, I caught Miyuki's eye, and we shared a small smile of understanding. Our conversation earlier had changed something between us, establishing a new layer of honesty and mutual respect.

"Everything looks amazing," I commented, surveying the elaborate spread of food that Emi and her kitchen team had prepared.

"Emi outdid herself," Miyuki agreed, her normally reserved demeanour softened by genuine appreciation. "She's been planning this menu for days."

The centrepiece was a roast that resembled a cross between venison and something more exotic, surrounded by vegetables in vibrant colours that didn't quite match any Earth equivalent. Side dishes in various shapes and textures filled the remaining table space, many incorporating ingredients we'd discovered in the local forests.

"I still can't believe those purple root things taste like chocolate when roasted," Airi commented from further down the table, pointing to a dish of what we'd nicknamed "choco-roots."

"I'm packaging some to take with us," Emi called out proudly. "They keep well and provide excellent energy for long journeys."

As the meal progressed, the volume in the hall gradually increased. Toasts were offered spontaneously, to our journey, to finding Naomi-san, to our growing abilities and knowledge. The atmosphere reminded me of pre-tournament gatherings in Champions of Eternity, when our guild would gather online before a major raid, everyone nervous and excited at once. All we needed was someone passing out stat-boosting energy drinks and the nostalgia would be complete.

Eventually, Andie stood, raising his glass. The room quieted immediately, all eyes turning to him.

"To the journey ahead," he said simply, "whatever it may bring."

"Whatever it may bring," we echoed, the words carrying weight beyond their simplicity.

As we continued eating, the leaders took turns reviewing key aspects of our plan. Ryota detailed our route and estimated timeline. Kazuki stepped forward with his tablet displaying a complex diagram.

"Let's go over our rotation groups one more time," he said, projecting the list onto the wall for everyone to see. "Group A, led by Andie, will include Miyako, Airi, Ruri, Noel, Miyuki, Mochi, Emi, Yuna, Keiko-oneechan, Aoi, Haruka, and Rina."

The names appeared on the display, and I couldn't help but notice once again how many of Andie's admirers were in his group.

"Group B, under my leadership," Kazuki continued, "will consist of Hiroko, Sakura, Sora, Yuto, Fryevia, Vinera, Hina, Ayumi, Nao, Riko, Mei, and Yui."

He scrolled to the final group. "And Group C, led by Ryota, includes Ayaka, Miku, Asuka, Nana, Hitomi, Kurenai, Tatsuya, Kenta, Shohei, Masato, Naoki, Viktora, and Mediena."

"Wait a minute," Hiroko said, studying the list with narrowed eyes. "Is it just me, or are all the athletic types in Group C? Ryota, Hitomi, Kurenai, Tatsuya, Kenta... they were all sports club members back at school."

"Good observation," Kazuki nodded. "We deliberately distributed skills evenly across groups. Group C has most of our athletic members to handle the physically demanding tasks. Group B has our technical specialists. And Group A..."

"Has the Andie Fan Club," Airi finished with a grin, causing laughter to ripple through the room.

I joined in the laughter, feeling secure enough to find humour in the situation. The arrangement made practical sense, balancing physical capabilities, technical skills, and magical aptitudes across the groups. Though I had to admit, if this were a game, Group A would have a suspiciously high ratio of potential romance routes.

Andie cleared his throat, a faint blush on his cheeks. "Moving on to our base operations," he said, redirecting the conversation. "Thanks to the portal system we've installed in Truck-kun, we'll be able to use the sanctuary as our home base throughout the journey."

This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

This revelation caused an excited murmur among those who hadn't been part of the planning committee.

"You mean we get to sleep in our own beds?" Rina asked, her face brightening.

"For the most part, yes," Andie confirmed. "The portal in Truck-kun will allow us to return to the sanctuary each night. The night guards for each rotation will have the option to either return to the sanctuary to sleep or remain with the vehicles at their discretion."

"That's brilliant," Aoi exclaimed. "I was worried about sleeping arrangements in the wilderness."

"The vehicles are still equipped with comfortable sleeping tents or recliner chairs," Hina added, "should anyone need to rest during their driving shift or if circumstances prevent us from returning to the sanctuary."

"This arrangement gives us the best of both worlds," Ryota explained. "Security for our people and equipment, plus the comfort and resources of our established base."

Noel then stood to address the invisibility strategy for our final approach.

"Kurenai, Ruri and I will coordinate the concealment enchantments for our vehicles during the last night," she explained. "Our magic, combined with Miyuki's time-shift perception spell, should allow us to approach undetected if necessary."

I watched the faces around me as they absorbed this information, some nervous, others determined, all united in purpose. This wasn't just a journey to find Naomi-san; it was our first real step toward defining our place in this world.

"Any questions or concerns?" Andie asked, his gaze sweeping the room. "Now's the time to voice them."

Yuna raised her hand. "What's our protocol if we encounter hostility?"

"Non-engagement unless absolutely necessary," Kazuki answered firmly. "Our primary goal is to locate Naomi-san, not to start conflicts."

"And if we're separated from the group?" Miku asked.

"Each vehicle contains emergency communication crystals," Ryota explained. "Additionally, Andie, Ruri, Noel, and Miyako can communicate through their rings if conventional methods fail."

The questions continued for several minutes, each answered with careful consideration. It was clear that our leaders had thought through virtually every contingency.

A brief silence fell, broken only by Ruri's voice, unusually serious for once. "Whatever happens, we face it together. That's been our strength from the beginning."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the gathering. As the evening progressed, conversations gradually quieted, the initial excitement giving way to thoughtful contemplation of the journey ahead.

"We should all get some rest," Keiko-oneechan suggested as the hour grew late. "Tomorrow will be a long day."

As people began to disperse, I felt Miyuki's hand lightly touch my arm. Her expression was unreadable, but her eyes held the same intensity I'd seen when she'd shared that cryptic spell with Ruri and me.

"Sleep well," she said simply. "And... thank you for our talk earlier."

"Of course," I replied, feeling a strange mix of warmth and unease. Her warning, or prediction, still lingered in my mind. "See you in the morning."

She nodded and moved away, rejoining Mochi who waited near the door. I watched them leave, wondering again what Miyuki had foreseen that prompted her to share that spell with us.

"Ready to head back?" Andie's voice pulled me from my thoughts.

I nodded, taking his outstretched hand, grateful for the anchor of his presence amid the swirling uncertainty of our future.

The sanctuary hummed with activity the next morning. Breakfast was a cacophony of excited voices, clinking tableware, and last-minute preparations. The air felt charged with anticipation, the same electric energy I remembered from tournament days, but magnified tenfold by the reality of our situation.

I moved through the dining hall, helping check supply lists and offering reassurance to those who seemed most anxious. Yuna was meticulously counting her medical supplies for the third time. Rina kept readjusting her backpack straps, a nervous habit she'd developed since coming to Voluptaria. Even Kazuki, usually the epitome of calm efficiency, was double-checking his tablet with unusual intensity.

"Did you remember to pack the special cleansing wipes?" I asked Aoi, who had been fretting about maintaining hygiene during the journey. "And your favourite hair clips?"

Her face brightened. "Yes! And I packed extras in case anyone else needs them."

"Perfect," I smiled, squeezing her shoulder before moving on to where Haruka was struggling to fit a small photo frame into her already overstuffed bag.

"Family photo?" I asked gently.

She nodded. "From the school trip to Kyoto last year. It's silly, but..."

"It's not silly at all," I interrupted. "Here, let me help you rearrange these."

As I helped Haruka make space for her precious keepsake, my gaze drifted across the room to where Emi was distributing small packages of travel rations. The spread she'd prepared for breakfast was impressive, fluffy pastries, protein-rich egg dishes, fresh fruits, and what resembled small energy bars made from nuts and dried berries.

"These will keep your energy up during the morning drive," she explained, handing packages to each person. "And I've colour-coded them by day so you don't get confused."

"Emi-sama has thought of everything," Sora declared with mock reverence, earning a pleased blush from our resident chef.

"It's just basic meal planning," she demurred, though her smile revealed her pride.

I caught Miyuki watching this exchange, a thoughtful expression on her face. When our eyes met, she gave me a small nod of acknowledgment. There was something different in the way we interacted now, a subtle shift from potential rivals to something closer to family. Sisters-in-waiting, as Mochi had suggested.

The thought brought a rush of complicated emotions. Back on Earth, the idea of sharing Andie would have been unthinkable. Here, it had become not just acceptable but somehow right, an arrangement that suited this world and the people we were becoming within it. Apparently, isekai worlds come with their own relationship upgrades.

I was pulled from my thoughts by Andie's hand on my shoulder. "Can I steal you away for a moment?" he asked quietly.

I nodded, following him through the bustle of activity and out toward the cave entrance. The morning air was crisp and clear, the sun just beginning to warm the day. We stood at the threshold between our sanctuary and the wider world, neither fully inside nor outside.

"Nervous?" he asked, his eyes searching mine.

"A little," I admitted. "But excited too. It feels like we're finally taking real action instead of just reacting to one crisis after another."

He nodded, understanding in his gaze. "I wanted to thank you. For your strategy yesterday, for your leadership with the others, for..." he paused, seeming to search for words, "for making this all feel possible."

"We make it possible together," I replied, reaching for his hand. "Player 1 and Player 2, remember?"

His fingers intertwined with mine, warm and solid. "I remember. But you've become so much more than just my Player 2, Miyako. You're the heart of this whole operation."

The sincerity in his voice made my chest tighten. "Careful," I teased, trying to lighten the sudden intensity. "If you get too sentimental, I might think we're heading into a bad end scenario."

He laughed, the sound brightening the morning air. "Always the gamer."

"Always," I agreed, then grew serious. "We're going to find her, Andie. Naomi-san. And we're going to bring her home."

We stood in silence for a moment, hands linked, absorbing the quiet before the storm of activity that awaited us. Then, with wordless agreement, he leaned down as I stretched up, our lips meeting in a kiss that carried all the things we couldn't quite say, our hopes, our fears, our determination.

When we finally pulled apart, I rested my forehead against his chest for just a moment, listening to the steady beat of his heart. "We should get back," I murmured reluctantly.

He nodded, pressing a final kiss to the top of my head before we turned to rejoin the others.

"All aboard!" Kurenai's voice rang out across the assembly area where our three vehicles waited, engines humming with magical energy.

I took my position at the wheel of Scout, our vanguard vehicle. Through the windows, I could see Keiko-oneechan at the controls of Bus-kun, and Andie climbing into the driver's seat of Truck-kun. According to our rotation plan, I would lead the convoy for the first leg of our journey, with the other vehicles following in formation.

The interior of Scout smelled of new materials and magical energy, a strange combination of leather, metal, and the distinctive ozone-like scent of active runes. My hands settled on the steering wheel, feeling the responsive connection to the vehicle's systems.

"Navigation systems active," Airi confirmed from beside me, her fingers dancing across the crystal display panel. "Route mapped and locked in."

In the seats behind us, Noel, Ruri, Miyuki, Mochi, and Emi were engaged in animated conversation, their excitement palpable in the confined space. Rina and Aoi sat further back, checking their personal supplies one last time.

Through the side mirrors, I could see the rest of our convoy forming up, Bus-kun with its larger contingent of passengers, and Truck-kun carrying our male classmates along with the bulk of our supplies and the portable portal anchor that would allow us to return to the sanctuary each night.

"Convoy, this is Scout," I said, feeling a surge of responsibility and purpose. "Commencing journey on my mark. Three... two... one... mark."

I pressed gently on the acceleration, feeling Scout respond with eager power. We moved forward, sunlight washing over us as we emerged from the shadow of the mountain. Behind us, the other vehicles followed in perfect formation, our convoy taking shape as we began our journey east toward Takejin territory.

The morning mist was burning off in the golden light, creating an almost magical atmosphere as we travelled through the forest clearing. I caught glimpses of my companions in the other vehicles through the windows, faces both nervous and determined, all united in purpose.

In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of connection to everyone in our convoy. These weren't just classmates or allies; they were family, bonds forged in crisis, strengthened by shared purpose, and deepened by mutual care. From Ruri and Noel with their ancient wisdom and otherworldly grace, to Miyuki and Mochi with their complicated history and unwavering loyalty, to Airi and the others who had stood beside me from the beginning, each person had become an essential thread in the tapestry of our shared life.

As the sanctuary receded behind us and the eastern horizon stretched before us, I couldn't help but reflect on how far we had come, not just in distance, but in who we had become. The path ahead was uncertain, filled with potential dangers and unknown challenges. Yet for the first time since arriving in this world, I felt truly ready to face whatever awaited us. Quest accepted, no matter what the difficulty rating might be.

And so, we drove forward, toward a new world, new dangers, and perhaps, new definitions of what it means to be a family.
