Chapter 29: Arrivals and Revelations
Miyako's POV - At Crossroads
I was staring at the same spot on the Golden Hearth's polished wooden floor for what felt like hours, my fingers anxiously twisting the hem of my skirt. The inn bustled with activity around me, but all I could think about was Andie. Alone at the sanctuary, facing who knows what dangers. My mind kept replaying that moment when he left, the weight of the lucky charm I'd pressed into his palm, the look in his eyes promising he'd return.
A shadow fell across the floor before me, breaking my trance. I looked up to see Madame Noel, the rabbit-eared Solenari diplomat, her elegant figure silhouetted against the morning light streaming through the windows.
"Excuse me, Yukihana-san," she said, her voice melodious yet businesslike. "I've just received word from my scouts. The... disturbance at the sanctuary appears to have concluded."
My heart leapt into my throat. "Concluded? What does that mean? Is Andie—"
"They couldn't get close enough to determine specifics," Noel said, raising a placating hand. "They spotted no ongoing combat, though there are signs of recent activity."
I stood so quickly my chair nearly toppled backward. "We need to go there. Now."
Noel nodded. "I anticipated you might feel that way. I've already arranged for a carriage—"
"Miyako!"
I turned to see Airi rushing toward us, dodging between tables with practiced grace. Her normally composed face wore an expression of urgent concern. Sakura and Hiroko followed close behind.
"I heard," she said breathlessly. "About the sanctuary. After helping Hitomi find the guys returning from their expedition, I came back with Sakura and Hiroko. Hitomi's directing Kazuki and the others to the sanctuary."
"We're leaving as soon as the carriage is ready," I confirmed, already mentally cataloguing what we'd need. Medical supplies? Weapons? Gods, I had no idea what we'd find. "Noel-san has arranged transportation."
Airi nodded, her expression shifting to the focused look I'd seen countless times during our raids. "I hope they get there in time. I hope the jocks are okay too; we haven't heard anything from them either."
As we stepped outside, I saw the promised carriage pulling up, an elegant, spacious conveyance pulled by four strong horses with tawny coats. It looked explicitly designed for long-distance travel in comfort, with the Solenari crest emblazoned on its doors.
"Will this be sufficient?" Noel asked, gesturing toward the carriage.
"We should bring healers," I said, scanning the inn's entrance where several of our classmates had gathered after hearing the commotion. "If somebody's injured..."
Noel nodded. "This carriage can accommodate up to ten passengers, though it will be somewhat crowded."
"Ara ara, did someone say 'crowded'? That sounds like my kind of party~"
I turned to see an unfamiliar woman approaching us with a walk that could only be described as a sensual glide. She moved like liquid moonlight given form, her platinum hair cascading down her back with a single elegant braid framing the front. My eyes widened at her attire; she wore what appeared to be nearly transparent silk, fashioned into a form-fitting dress that barely qualified as clothing at all.
Beneath the gossamer fabric, I could clearly see dark blue lace undergarments that revealed far more than they concealed. Her rabbit ears were longer than Noel's, with a distinctive silvery pattern running along their length that seemed to catch and reflect the morning light.
"I couldn't help but overhear," she continued, fixing her gaze on me with a smile that seemed almost predatory. "You're heading to check on that delicious otherworlder, aren't you? I'm coming along. I might be able to help, you know."
Before I could object, she breezed past me and climbed into the carriage with a wink. "Don't worry, I don't bite... unless you ask nicely."
"Who is that?" I whispered to Noel, taken aback by the strange woman's forwardness and barely-there clothing.
Noel sighed. "That's Ruri, a Lunethnari Moonveil Dancer. She's actually quite skilled with lunar magic. She might indeed be helpful, despite her... mannerism."
I bit back my instinctive objection. This wasn't the time for territorial squabbles with strangers. "Fine. But we need healers too."
My eyes scanned the gathered students and landed on the Kimochi sisters. Perfect.
"Miyuki, Mochi, would you join us? We might need your healing abilities."
They nodded gravely and gathered their supplies.
As our group assembled, Airi approached me. "I hope Kazuki and the others get there soon," she murmured. "I have a bad feeling about all this."
My stomach tightened. What had happened at the sanctuary? And was Andie...
No. I wouldn't even think about it.
We boarded the carriage in tense silence: Ruri, Noel, myself, Airi, Sakura, Hiroko, Miyuki, and Mochi. As the driver cracked the reins and we lurched forward, I stared out the window at the passing landscape, clutching my half of the paired charm whose twin I'd given Andie. The smooth stone felt warm in my palm, its engraved protection sigil a small comfort.
Please be alive. Please be alright. I'll forgive anything else.
Carriage Journey
The forest paths outside Crossroads weren't designed for speed or comfort. Each bump and jolt of the carriage sent tremors of anxiety through my already-frayed nerves. The elegant conveyance that had looked so comfortable at the inn now felt like a prison, keeping me from reaching Andie more quickly.
Through the window, I watched the landscape gradually change. The well-maintained paths near Crossroads gave way to wilder forest, the dense canopy occasionally broken by shafts of sunlight. In any other circumstance, I might have found it beautiful.
"I'm seeing signs of unusual activity," Noel remarked, peering out her own window. "Look at those scorched areas between the trees. Whatever happened was no minor confrontation."
Sakura was meticulously checking her healing supplies, arranging crystals, herbs, and bandages with practiced efficiency. "I'm ready for whatever we find," she said, though her trembling hands betrayed her concern.
Across from me, Miyuki and Mochi sat with their heads close together, discussing healing protocols in low voices.
"If there's essence fragmentation..." Miyuki murmured.
"I can handle physical trauma while you focus on the cognitive pattern," Mochi replied.
Their clinical detachment was somehow both reassuring and terrifying. I kept picturing Andie hurt, bleeding, worse... and fought to keep my breakfast down.
The platinum-haired Lunethnari, Ruri, studied each of us in turn with unnerving intensity. When she caught me watching her, she simply smiled, less provocative than before, almost sympathetic.
"Your young man is quite remarkable," she said softly. "I sensed that the moment I saw him in town."
Before I could ask how she knew Andie, Airi leaned forward beside me.
"Let's focus on getting there in one piece," she said, eyes scanning the increasingly wild forest. "I don't like how quiet it is. No birds, no wildlife..."
My heart clenched. "You don't think—"
A distant boom cut through the air, like thunder but with an oddly metallic resonance.
"That wasn't thunder," Hiroko said quickly, her fingers already weaving a detection spell. "That was magical backlash. Powerful magic destabilising."
"Driver!" Noel called out. "More speed, if you please!"
The carriage lurched forward as the horses broke into a gallop, sending us clutching for handholds.
All I could think was: Hold on, Andie. We're coming.
Kazuki's POV - Forest Approach
"Move faster!" I barked at Sora and Yuto as we forced our way through the dense underbrush. "We need to reach the sanctuary!"
Sweat poured down my face, more from anxiety than exertion. When Hitomi had found us returning from our dungeon expedition with urgent news; jocks missing, sanctuary possibly compromised, Andie going alone, I'd immediately rounded up the guys and set off at a run.
"Do you think the jocks are okay?" Yuto panted beside me, ducking under a low-hanging branch.
"Don't know," I grunted. "Hitomi's message was fragmented. All I know is that Andie went alone to investigate, and we haven't heard anything since."
Sora's expression darkened. "If something happened to Andie..."
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
We all shared the same thought. Andie wasn't just our friend; he was our anchor in this chaotic world, the one who'd created a safe haven when everything went to hell.
A distant rumbling sound made us pause.
"Wheels," I whispered, signalling the others to take cover. "Someone's coming."
We concealed ourselves behind a thick cluster of bushes, weapons at the ready. The rumbling grew louder, and soon an ornate carriage came into view, moving at dangerous speed along the rough forest path.
As it passed, I caught glimpses of familiar faces through the windows.
"It's Miyako and the others," I said, relief washing over me. "Come on!"
We emerged from cover and followed the carriage at a distance, pushing ourselves to maintain pace. The forest thinned as we approached the sanctuary, giving us glimpses of the carriage ahead.
When we finally reached the clearing, we arrived just as the carriage doors were opening. The sight before us stole my breath.
The sanctuary entrance was in ruins. The elegantly carved stone doorway that Andie had so proudly shown us was cracked and partially collapsed. Trees at the edge of the clearing stood scorched and broken, as if a massive force had swept through the area.
And the ground... the ground was stained with dark pools that could only be blood.
"Andie..." Yuto whispered beside me.
I nodded grimly to Miyako and the others as they emerged from the carriage, their expressions mirroring our own horror. Without a word, we all moved cautiously toward the damaged sanctuary entrance, scanning for threats but finding only devastation.
What the hell happened here?
Miyako's POV - Discovery
I barely registered Kazuki and the nerds as we approached the ruined sanctuary entrance. My focus was entirely on what we might find inside. The heavy metallic scent of blood in the air made my stomach clench.
Our group moved forward as one, stepping carefully around debris and scorch marks. The silence was oppressive, broken only by our cautious footfalls and the occasional creak of settling stone.
Then we rounded a pile of rubble, and I stopped dead.
There, in a small clearing before the sanctuary entrance, lay Andie. But he wasn't alone. A blue-skinned woman with striking silver hair was bent over him, her lips pressed firmly against his in what appeared to be a deep, intimate kiss. Strange shadows swirled around them both, and faint luminescent patterns pulsed beneath the woman's skin.
As we watched, frozen in shock, the shadows gradually dissipated. The woman slowly pulled away from Andie, her violet eyes heavy with exhaustion.
"Welcome back," she whispered, her voice carrying clearly in the silence. "Do not waste what was given, Andie Ryuu."
I couldn't move. Couldn't speak. Couldn't even process what I was seeing. It was as if my brain had simply shut down, refusing to connect the dots before me.
The scantily-clad rabbit-eared woman, Ruri, broke the spell with a lilting voice. "Ara ara, what do we have here?"
My voice returned, small and uncertain. "What are they doing?"
Mochi stepped forward, her clinical gaze assessing the scene. "That seems to be healing... but I'm not sure what plane it was."
"CPR maybe?" suggested Kazuki, looking uncertain.
Airi snorted beside me. "You don't french kiss during CPR, Kazuki."
Miyuki shook her head, her expression serious. "This is much more complex than physical resuscitation. I saw fragmentation in his memory and soul..."
A spike of irrational anger shot through me. "Did she cause it?" I demanded, glaring at the blue-skinned woman.
Noel shook her head, her voice professional. "That's a Luxuriveth, quite rare to see one so close to settlements. They're deeply connected to the Umbral plane."
Ruri stepped forward, her eyes sparkling with recognition and mischief. "A Shadow Elf! Haven't seen one of your kind in decades! Don't keep him all to yourself, now! I want a kiss too! Actually," she paused dramatically, pressing a hand to her chest, "I don't mind kissing both of you~"
I shot her a withering glance, but my mind was in turmoil. After weeks of watching every female in our class gravitate toward Andie, after finally claiming him as mine, after the Kimochi sisters joined our complicated arrangement... now this? An exotic blue-skinned local with a magical kiss? The universe had to be joking.
But then my eyes caught sight of something else, a body lying not far from Andie, surrounded by a pool of congealed blood. With a jolt of horror, I recognised Shinji Kato, his body nearly cleaved in two by what must have been a devastating strike.
Reality crashed back in. This wasn't about jealousy or relationship drama. Something terrible had happened here.
The healers rushed forward to assess Andie, and I followed close behind. As I approached, I got a better look at the blue woman. Her normally vivid blue skin had paled to an ashen grey, and the luminescent patterns beneath her skin flickered weakly, like dying embers. She swayed where she sat, clearly at the edge of collapse herself.
My emotions warred within me. Jealousy tangled with practical concern, possessiveness with gratitude. Whatever she had done, she had clearly sacrificed much to do it. And if Miyuki's assessment was correct, she had somehow saved Andie's essence, his very soul.
I made a strategic decision. "We need to get both of them proper care," I announced, my voice steadier than I felt. "They both need to come with us to Crossroads."
Andie's POV - Aftermath
Consciousness returns in waves, like swimming up from the depths of a dark, still lake. The first thing I register is Rurielle's voice, soft and weary: "Welcome back." The taste of her lips lingers, something indescribable, like midnight air and exotic spice.
Then other sounds filter in: the crunch of approaching footsteps, the creak and rattle of a carriage, voices, familiar voices, raised in shock and confusion.
I try to open my eyes, but my lids feel weighted. When I finally manage to crack them open, my vision is blurred, but I can make out Rurielle's exhausted face above me, her normally vibrant blue-grey skin now ashen and dull.
My HUD flickers erratically across my vision, notifications popping up faster than I can process them:
[Essence Stabilisation Complete: 87%]
[New Ability: Umbral-Sense - Courtesy of Rurielle's Intervention]
[Multiple Abilities Umbra-Tempered...]
I try to focus, but pain crashes through my body in waves. The ritual may have saved my soul, but my physical injuries remain: broken ribs, internal bleeding, countless lacerations. Every breath feels like fire.
Turning my head slightly, I become aware of multiple presences watching us. My vision clears enough to recognise familiar faces: Miyako, her expression a complex mixture of relief and hurt; the Kimochi sisters, their analytical gazes already assessing my condition; Kazuki and the nerds, shock evident in their wide eyes.
I try to speak, to explain, but my throat is raw, and all that emerges is a raspy whisper: "Not... what it looks... like. She saved... me."
My eyes lock with Miyako's. I know how this must appear, after everything we've shared, for her to find me locked in what looked like a passionate kiss with a stunning blue-skinned woman. But there's something beyond hurt in her eyes, a calculating intelligence that's one of the reasons I care for her so deeply. She's putting the pieces together, even as emotions war within her.
I glance back at Rurielle. Her normally confident demeanour is gone, replaced by evident exhaustion and vulnerability. The bioluminescent patterns beneath her skin, once vibrant and hypnotic, are now dimmed to barely visible traces. Her body sways slightly, and I realise the ritual has taken a terrible toll on her as well.
Yet when she meets the stares of the newcomers, a flash of defiance crosses her violet eyes, then softens as she looks back at me.
"Otherworlder..." she whispers, for my ears alone, "I couldn't let you fade."
My HUD cheerfully displays:
[Relationship Complication Detected!]
[Achievement Unlocked: Blue Is The Warmest Colour]
Even my system has a twisted sense of humour. Of course... nothing in Voluptaria... is ever simple.
My gaze drifts to the side, catching sight of Shinji's body lying nearby. Memory floods back: his confession, our battle, his death, and the catastrophic transfer of abilities that nearly destroyed me. The enormity of what happened threatens to overwhelm my fragile consciousness.
I need to tell them... everything. But darkness is closing in again, my body too damaged to maintain awareness.
As my vision begins to fade, the three healers rush to my side. Mochi's hands move with surgical precision, her Chirurgeon abilities mapping my injuries through diagnostic touches. Sakura's palms glow with divine energy as she activates her Life Crystal. Miyuki's eyes take on a distant focus as her Mnemonic abilities assess the state of my fractured consciousness.
Through the haze of pain, I catch fragments of their assessment:
"His essence has been realigned, but there's Umbra magic intertwined now..."
"Physical trauma is severe but thankfully not immediately life-threatening..."
"Something's altered his magical signature fundamentally..."
Miyuki's authoritative voice cuts through the technical jargon: "The Luxuriveth is also in critical condition. Umbra exhaustion. She... she must have used forbidden techniques to save him."
I manage to focus one last time on Miyako's face, watching as the conflict in her expression resolves into decisive action.
"We need to get both of them proper care," she says firmly. "Let's get them to the carriage now."
As darkness claims me again, I feel myself being carefully lifted. Somehow, Rurielle's hand is still loosely clasped in mine as we're both carried toward the carriage.
My last fading thought is gratitude that despite everything, Miyako's compassion extends to the one who saved me, even as questions and complications loom on the horizon...
Miyako's POV - Carriage Departure
"Careful with his head," I directed as Kazuki and Yuto gently transferred Andie into the carriage. "Mochi, can you stabilise his neck?"
"Already on it," Mochi answered clinically, her hands supporting Andie's head with practiced precision.
I watched the nerds struggle briefly with Rurielle's limp form before managing to lift her into the carriage as well. Sora had removed his jacket to cover her more revealing attire, a gesture of unexpected gallantry.
When both injured parties were settled on opposite benches, Sakura immediately resumed her healing work, her hands glowing softly as she channelled energy into Andie's broken body. Miyuki positioned herself where she could monitor both patients, her eyes occasionally focusing as she assessed their mental states.
A sombre mood fell over us as everyone's gaze eventually turned to Shinji's mutilated corpse.
"What about him?" Kazuki asked quietly, nodding toward the body.
"We can't just leave him here," Hiroko said, though her tone suggested she wasn't particularly broken up about his death.
Noel stepped forward. "My Lupyn guards will transport his remains back for a proper burial. It's the decent thing to do, regardless of his actions."
"After what he did to Daiki, Kaito, and Shota?" Airi muttered darkly.
Noel nodded gravely. "All the more reason to handle this properly. The other victims deserve justice, which requires preserving evidence."
"I'll have my agents collect the other bodies that my Vulpyn scouts have located in the forest," Noel continued, signalling to a fox-eared agent who had appeared at the edge of the clearing.
Taking a deep breath, I straightened my shoulders. Someone needed to take charge, and with Andie incapacitated, that someone would be me.
"Yuto, help Hiroko collect any significant items from inside the sanctuary," I directed. "We may not be returning here soon."
Everyone moved to their tasks with surprising efficiency. I returned to the carriage and took a seat beside Andie, gently taking his hand. His skin felt cool but not cold, and I could see his chest rising and falling with shallow breaths.
Across from us, Rurielle rested on the opposite bench, her exotic features slack in unconsciousness. I studied her face, noting the unusual beauty, the faint patterns still visible beneath her skin. What was she to Andie? A chance acquaintance who'd saved his life? Or something more? The rational part of me knew jealousy was pointless right now, but emotions rarely listen to reason.
It didn't matter right now. What mattered was getting them both the help they needed.
As the others returned and took their places, the carriage grew crowded indeed. Noel signalled to the driver, and with a lurch, we began pulling away from the devastated sanctuary.
Ruri, seated by the window, glanced back at the ruined structure as it receded from view.
"Umbra and Astra finding balance," she murmured cryptically. When she caught my questioning look, she merely smiled. "Your otherworlder has achieved something rare and dangerous, young Yukihana. The question is whether he'll be able to control it when he wakes."
I didn't ask what she meant. Instead, I held Andie's hand more firmly, watching the rise and fall of his chest, counting each breath as if my own life depended on it.
The carriage raced back toward Crossroads, carrying both answers and new mysteries, and the boy who, somehow, had become the centre of our strange new world.
I leaned close to his ear, whispering words for him alone.
"I don't know what happened, but I'm here. We're all here. And we're going to figure this out together."
His fingers twitched slightly in mine, and I allowed myself to hope it meant he'd heard me. Compared to the previous scares, this time I had truly almost lost him. And I would never let that happen again.
