Tactical Embarrassment

Chapter 16: Morning Routines and Combat Training

The pre-dawn air held that specific kind of stillness unique to early mornings, when the world seems to pause between breaths. I stood outside our cave sanctuary, watching as the first hints of golden light crept over the eastern horizon. My body felt simultaneously exhausted and energised—a peculiar contradiction that seemed fitting after the night I'd had with Miyako.

"If every night in Voluptaria is going to be this eventful," I muttered to myself, "my heart's going to give out before we even find the demon lord."

I leaned against the smooth stone wall beside our sanctuary's entrance, enjoying this rare moment of solitude. Between twenty-one classmates, one teacher, and an increasingly complex web of relationships, quiet moments had become precious commodities. The forest around us was just beginning to stir—birds calling to each other in melodies unlike anything from Earth, small creatures rustling in the underbrush, and the distant sound of the river we'd followed days ago.

"Morning, stranger," came a soft voice behind me. I turned to find Miyako stepping out of the sanctuary, her hair slightly mussed from sleep but her eyes bright and alert. She glanced around quickly to confirm we were alone before closing the distance between us.

"Hi," I replied, suddenly awkward despite everything that had happened between us. Social scripting for 'morning after passionate bath encounter' had never been covered in any class I'd attended.

Miyako seemed to have no such reservations. She stepped close and wrapped her arms around my waist, resting her head against my chest. "I was worried you'd be weird about this," she murmured.

"Me? Weird? When have I ever been socially awkward?" I joked, tentatively returning her embrace.

She laughed against my chest, the vibration oddly comforting. "Only every day since I've known you."

We stood like that for a moment, watching as the sunrise painted the forest canopy in hues of amber and gold. The morning air was crisp and cool, but Miyako's warmth against me created a perfect temperature balance.

"I've been thinking," I said, gesturing toward the area above our cave entrance. "This would be a nice spot for a balcony. I could use Transform to create one—give us a better view of sunrises like this."

Miyako pulled back slightly to meet my eyes, looking both amused and fond. "Already planning home improvements? I'll support whatever you want to do with our sanctuary."

Our sanctuary. The phrase settled in my chest with surprising weight. This place had gone from my solitary refuge to a communal shelter to... something else entirely in the span of days. You know, the little things.

The sound of the stone door opening behind us made us step apart with practised casualness. The Kimochi sisters emerged, both looking refreshed despite the early hour. They wore the simple outfits I'd created for them using Transform—practical trousers and tunics that were far more suitable for this world than our school uniforms.

"Morning," I greeted them, perhaps a touch too enthusiastically.

"Good morning, Andie," Miyuki replied, her eyes flickering between Miyako and me with quiet assessment. "Planning the day's activities?"

"Something like that," I nodded, awkwardly shoving my hands in my pockets.

Miyako cleared her throat. "I should go wake the others. We've got a busy schedule today." Her eyes met mine briefly, communicating something private I couldn't quite decipher, before she slipped back inside.

I found myself standing alone with the Kimochi sisters in the golden morning light. Despite our emotional reconnection and that intense night together days ago, there was still a delicate newness to our interactions—a careful navigation of boundaries we were all still figuring out.

"I should help with breakfast," I said finally. "Twenty-three people need feeding, and I refuse to let anyone start the day hungry."

As I turned to follow Miyako inside, I caught the sisters exchanging a look—one of those silent communications I'd never been able to decipher. Something about it made me suspect they knew more about my night with Miyako than I'd realised. The thought sent heat rushing to my face as I retreated into the sanctuary.

A pang of nostalgia hit me as I walked away—how many mornings had we spent together as kids, the three of us watching the sun rise over our neighbourhood? Actually, most of those memories involved me being forcibly dragged out of bed by two enthusiastic girls who thought 5 AM was a reasonable time to start weekend adventures. Some things change; some stay the same.

The kitchen was already bustling when I arrived. Emi had taken command of the space with surprising authority, directing a small team of volunteers through breakfast preparations. Her Cook job class seemed to have granted her not just culinary skills but leadership abilities when it came to food-related matters.

"Andie-kun," she greeted me with a warm smile. "Perfect timing. Could you help with the rice? We need about fifteen cups to feed everyone."

I nodded, grateful for the simple task. As I measured rice and water into the large pot I'd transformed days ago, I watched Emi work. There was something mesmerising about her efficiency—the way she seemed to know exactly when to flip fish fillets on the stone grill, how she stirred miso soup with precise, economical movements, how she directed the others without ever raising her voice.

"You're really in your element," I observed as I finished preparing the rice.

Emi blushed slightly but didn't pause in her work. "It feels right, somehow. Like I've always known how to do this, even though I never cooked much back home."

"That's the job class system for you," I replied. "Somehow it knows what you're meant to be."

A sudden golden light enveloped Emi, causing everyone in the kitchen to step back in surprise. The glow intensified, culminating in a shower of sparks that dissipated harmlessly into the air.

[JOB LEVEL UP: Cook → Level 3]
[New Ability Unlocked: FEAST OF THE FIVE SENSES – Once per day, prepare a dish that enhances a specific sense in whoever consumes it for 6 hours.]
[Passive Improvement: Food prepared provides 20% XP boost to job classes for 3 hours after consumption.]

Before any of us could react, a second golden glow surrounded Emi, even brighter than the first.

[JOB LEVEL UP: Cook → Level 4]
[New Ability Unlocked: NUTRITIONAL TRANSFIGURATION – Transform any edible substance into another, more nutritious form while maintaining caloric value.]
[Passive Improvement: All prepared food now provides minor health regeneration for 1 hour after consumption.]

"Wow," Emi breathed, staring at her hands in wonder. "Two levels at once?"

"Congratulations!" I said, genuinely impressed. "That's incredible, Emi."

She beamed, the joy on her face transforming her usually serious expression. "It must be because I'm cooking for so many people at once. The system recognises the scale of the work."

Rina, who had been stirring a pot of soup, leaned over to examine Emi's new abilities. "That XP boost will be incredibly useful for everyone," she noted. "And health regeneration? That's going to make a huge difference during training."

"We should let everyone know," I suggested. "This changes our approach to the day. If eating breakfast will give us an XP boost, we should organise the training schedule to take advantage of it."

Emi nodded, her expression shifting from joy to thoughtful strategy. "The effect lasts three hours, so if everyone eats by 8:00 AM, we'll have the boost until 11:00 AM."

"Perfect," I said. "I'll help you finish up here, then spread the word."

With renewed purpose, we completed breakfast preparations in record time. The spread was impressive—steamed rice, grilled fish, miso soup with tofu and seaweed, tamagoyaki, pickled vegetables, and even slices of what looked suspiciously like bacon but was probably some transformed forest creature. My Appraisal skill confirmed it was safe to eat, though I decided not to investigate too deeply into its origins.

As everyone gathered in the dining area, the reaction to the feast was immediate and vocal.

"This is like breakfast at a ryokan!" Hitomi exclaimed, eyes wide as she took in the spread.

"I haven't had a traditional Japanese breakfast since we came here," Ayaka added, already reaching for the grilled fish.

Amakata-sensei smiled warmly at Emi. "You've outdone yourself, Okada-san. This is exceptional."

Emi blushed under the praise but stood a little straighter. "Thank you, sensei. Actually, I just received two level-ups for my Cook class, and my new abilities mean this breakfast will give everyone an XP boost for three hours and minor health regeneration for one hour."

The announcement caused a buzz of excitement. Miyako, ever the strategist, immediately saw the implications.

"This changes our training plan," she declared, standing to address the group. "Combat jobs should take full advantage of this XP boost. We'll focus on clearing the southern perimeter first, then move to secure the eastern forest sector, where we've encountered the most monsters."

Hina nodded in agreement. "The non-combat jobs can use the boost for crafting and gathering exercises. Emi-chan, how often can you provide food with these benefits?"

"Every meal I prepare will have the regeneration effect now," Emi explained. "The XP boost is part of my passive ability, so it applies to all my cooking."

"That's it," Airi announced with a grin. "Emi is now officially the most valuable person in our group."

Laughter rippled through the room, but I noticed the genuinely appreciative looks Emi received. In a world of flashy combat abilities and magical powers, a Cook who could enhance everyone's abilities through food was indeed invaluable.

As we ate, conversation flowed easily around the table. I found myself seated between Miyako and Hitomi, with the Kimochi sisters directly across from me. The dynamics were fascinating to observe—Miyako subtly maintaining her claim on me through casual touches and shared glances, the sisters watching with knowing expressions that made me wonder exactly how soundproof my enchantments on the bathing chamber had been, and Hitomi seemingly oblivious to the undercurrents as she chatted about training strategies.

"After breakfast," Amakata-sensei announced once most people had finished eating, "we'll divide into our assigned groups as planned. Combat jobs will focus on securing the perimeter and gaining experience. Non-combat jobs will work on resource gathering, crafting, and sanctuary improvements."

She gestured to Miyako and Hina to take over the briefing.

"Combat group," Miyako began, her voice shifting to what I privately called her 'guild leader tone'—confident, authoritative, and brooking no argument. "We'll meet outside in fifteen minutes. Bring water, any equipment you have, and be ready for sustained activity. Our priority is securing the southern perimeter first, then the eastern sector after that, gaining as much XP as possible during the boost window."

Hina stepped forward next, her clipboard seeming like a permanent extension of her arm. "Non-combat group will divide into three teams: Gathering, led by Yui Kawaguchi; Crafting, led by Haruka and Ayaka; and Sanctuary Enhancement, led by Kurenai and Yuna. Amakata-sensei will oversee all groups and coordinate lunch preparation with Emi."

I watched with amusement as everyone naturally fell into their roles. Back in our classroom at Paradise Heights, these same organisational attempts would have been met with eye-rolling and foot-dragging. Here, with actual survival at stake, everyone recognised the value of structure.

As breakfast concluded and people began dispersing to prepare for the day's activities, Miyako caught my eye. "You're joining the combat group, right?"

"For the morning, yes," I confirmed. "I want to see how everyone's abilities work together."

She nodded, her expression softening momentarily before she remembered we had an audience. "Good. We could use your... uh... sticks and mud tactics again."

I snorted. "I'll have you know my skills have improved dramatically since then."

"I'd hope so," she replied with a teasing smile, "or we're all doomed."

By 7:30 AM, both groups had assembled outside the sanctuary. The morning air had warmed slightly, but the forest remained dappled in shadow, patches of golden sunlight breaking through the canopy to create a mosaic of light and dark on the ground.

Miyako stood before the combat group, looking every inch the commander despite wearing what was essentially a transformed school uniform. The ten women of the combat team gathered around her, weapons and equipment ready.

"Safety briefing," she began briskly. "We stay together at all times. No one goes solo, no exceptions. If you need to retreat, call it out. We'll use a buddy system—Airi with me, Mochi with Miyuki, Hina with Ayumi, Asuka with Hitomi, Nana with Mei. Your buddy watches your back."

She paced before the group, her expression deadly serious. "We've encountered three types of hostile entities so far: goblins, orcs, and those wolf-bear hybrid things—"

"We're calling them wearolves," Nana interjected with a grin. "Get it? Because they wear—"

"—because they're weirdly bear and wolf at the same time," Hitomi finished, rolling her eyes. "Your pun needs work, Nana."

"Wearolves," Miyako continued with practised patience, "travel in packs of three to five. They're faster than orcs but not as strong. Their claws can penetrate light armour, so keep your distance if possible."

I watched with increasing admiration as she outlined detailed tactics for each creature type, assigned specific roles based on everyone's job classes, and established clear communication protocols. This was a side of Miyako I'd glimpsed during our online gaming sessions but never fully appreciated—a natural leader with a strategic mind and genuine concern for her team.

"Andie will be floating between positions, providing support where needed," she concluded. "His Transform ability gives us tactical advantages with terrain manipulation, and his other skills..." She hesitated, a hint of colour touching her cheeks. "...provide unique support options."

I suppressed a groan, wondering if anyone else caught the double meaning. From the sly grin Airi directed my way, at least one person had.

"Lunch will be at noon back at the sanctuary," Hina added, consulting her clipboard. "Emi is also preparing snack bars that we can carry with us to extend our XP boost and provide additional healing if needed."

"Any questions?" Miyako asked.

Asuka raised her hand. "What about unexpected monster types? We've encountered three new species in the past two days."

"Good point," Miyako nodded. "Unknown hostiles require immediate threat assessment. Hitomi's Scout abilities can identify general threat levels. Prioritise information gathering over immediate engagement when possible."

With no further questions, the groups prepared to depart. I watched the non-combat team organising their gathering baskets and crafting tools, led by an enthusiastic Yui Kawaguchi who was already explaining the medicinal properties of various forest plants to her team.

"They'll be fine," Miyako assured me, noticing my concerned glance. "Kurenai enhanced the sanctuary's defensive perimeter this morning. Nothing gets within a hundred metres without alerting us, and they're staying within range of a quick retreat."

I nodded, turning my attention back to our combat group as we set out toward the southern perimeter.

The forest grew denser as we moved south, the trees taller and more ancient-looking than those near our sanctuary. Moss covered everything, hanging in ghostly curtains from branches and carpeting fallen logs in vibrant green. The light that filtered through the canopy had a strange, bluish quality that made the shadows seem deeper.

"Everyone stays alert," Miyako called softly from the front of our formation. "Hitomi, what are you sensing?"

Our scout closed her eyes briefly, her brow furrowing in concentration. "Multiple entities ahead. Roughly twenty... no, twenty-three distinct signatures. Mostly goblins, I think, but something larger too."

"Goblin camp with an orc overseer?" Airi suggested, already preparing an illusion spell. Her fingers traced complex patterns in the air, leaving faint trails of light.

"Likely," Miyako agreed. "Standard approach—Airi creates a diversion, I establish a defensive line, the rest of you take positions according to Plan C."

I was impressed by how smoothly everyone moved into formation. Days of training together had clearly paid off. Miyuki and Mochi took positions slightly behind the main group, their healing abilities ready. Hina and Ayumi stood side by side, preparing complementary buff abilities. Asuka whispered to something unseen in the underbrush—her Beast Companion ability allowing her to communicate with forest creatures for reconnaissance. Nana simply vanished into the shadows, her Rogue abilities making her practically invisible. Mei began muttering complex numerical formulas, her fingers sketching arcane calculations in the air.

"Andie," Miyako said quietly, "can you create some elevated positions? We need better sight lines."

I nodded, focusing my Transform ability on several large trees nearby. The wood rippled like liquid, branches extending and flattening to create natural platforms at various heights. Each platform included slight walls for protection and was positioned to provide overlapping fields of view.

"Perfect," she approved. "Hitomi, Mei, take the high positions. Airi, you're with me at ground level."

As everyone moved to their assigned positions, I focused on creating additional tactical advantages. Using Transform, I subtly altered the terrain—creating small ditches that could trip running enemies, hardening mud into barriers, and reshaping fallen trees into crude but effective defensive walls.

We didn't have to wait long for action. The goblin camp came into view through the trees—a collection of crude hide tents around a central fire pit. True to Hitomi's assessment, about twenty goblins moved around the camp, with a massive orc bellowing orders from a raised platform.

Airi's hand squeezed mine briefly. "Ready for some fun?"

Without waiting for an answer, she cast her illusion. The air between us and the camp shimmered, then erupted into what appeared to be a rampaging bear—easily three times larger than any natural bear, with flaming eyes and dripping fangs. The illusion charged toward the camp, roaring with bone-shaking volume.

The goblin response was immediate and chaotic—some grabbed weapons and charged to meet the threat, others fled in terror, and a few simply froze in place. The orc overseer bellowed commands, trying to organise a defence.

"Now!" Miyako shouted, activating her Arcane Bulwark abilities. A shimmering wall of magical energy formed before her as she charged forward. The rest of our group moved with practised coordination—Hina and Ayumi began a synchronised performance that somehow enhanced everyone's speed and strength, Asuka's forest allies emerged from the underbrush to flank the confused goblins, and Nana appeared suddenly behind the orc, her daggers finding vulnerable spots with deadly precision.

Miyuki and Mochi worked in perfect tandem, one providing strategic healing while the other cast protective enchantments. Their movements mirrored each other with unconscious grace—when one stepped left, the other moved right; when one raised her hands to cast, the other lowered hers to recover. The visual effect was almost like a dance, beautiful and deadly efficient.

I found myself momentarily entranced by the sisters' synchronised casting, before a goblin battle cry snapped me back to attention. Three of the creatures had spotted me and were charging with crude spears raised.

My Samurai abilities activated instantly, time seeming to slow as my perception heightened. I drew Rurielle's dagger—which I'd been practising with daily—and assumed the stance that felt increasingly natural: weight balanced on the balls of my feet, blade held low and slightly angled.

"IAIJUTSU STRIKE!"

The technique felt different this time—smoother, more powerful. I moved through the goblins like water, my blade leaving glowing trails in the air. Three strikes, three goblins down. They collapsed without even understanding what had happened.

[SKILL LEVELED UP: Iaijutsu Strike → Level 4]
Enhanced Effect: Now deals 180% damage with 35% armour penetration (previously 150%/25%)
Passive Improvement: 35% chance for critical hit (previously 25%)

"Nice work!" Miyako called out, her magical barrier deflecting goblin arrows as she advanced. "Keep pushing forward!"

The battle settled into a rhythm—Miyako tanking at the front, absorbing damage while Airi's illusions confused and divided the enemy forces. Hitomi and Mei provided ranged support from their elevated platforms, while the rest of us engaged in our specialised roles. It was coordinated chaos, and surprisingly effective.

Within minutes, the goblin camp was secured. The survivors had fled into the deeper forest, leaving behind supplies and equipment that Nana immediately began cataloguing with professional efficiency.

[JOB LEVEL UP: Samurai → Level 12]
[XP BONUS: Shared Group Combat Experience]
Enhanced Stats: +65% to all sword attacks; +48% movement speed during combat
New Ability Unlocked: BLADE HARMONY - Enter a state of perfect synchronisation with your weapon for 30 seconds, increasing attack speed by 40% and granting 20% chance to execute two strikes in one motion
Passive Improvement: All parries have 30% chance to create a counter-attack opportunity

The notification appeared in my field of vision, surprising me with the substantial jump in levels. The combination of Emi's food boost and shared combat experience had accelerated my progress far more than I'd expected. The catch-up bonus from fighting alongside much higher-level teammates—most of them around level 19—certainly helped as well.

Before I could process that, two more notifications flashed:

[JOB LEVEL UP: Lone Wolf → Level 12]
Enhanced Stats: +90% to all stats when operating alone; Only -1% penalty when in a party
New Ability Unlocked: SURVIVAL INSTINCT - When health drops below 20%, gain 100% increased evasion and movement speed for 20 seconds
Passive Improvement: PHANTOM PRESENCE duration increased to 5 minutes (previously 3 minutes)

"Great," I muttered. "The better I get at working with others, the more powerful my loner abilities become. If that's not the universe's idea of a joke, I don't know what is."

[JOB LEVEL UP: Accoucheur → Level 12]

Enhanced Stats: +140% reputation gain with families; Supernatural sense for pregnancy and related complications within 30 metres
Ability Improvement: LIFE'S FIRST BREATH can now heal magical afflictions in children and can be used once per day (previously twice per week)
Passive Improvement: Knowledge expanded to include magical bloodlines across all five kingdoms

I sighed, imagining trying to explain my skill set to anyone back on Earth. "Yes, I'm a master swordsman who can also deliver babies and knows the entire royal family tree across five kingdoms. Also, I work best alone despite constantly being surrounded by people." If there was a more bizarre combination of abilities, I hadn't heard of it.

"Everyone okay?" Miyako called out, scanning the group for injuries.

A few minor cuts and bruises were quickly attended to by the Kimochi sisters. Miyuki's healing magic felt like warm sunshine, while Mochi's Chirurgeon abilities seemed more precise and analytical. Between them, our group was combat-ready again within minutes.

"That was impressive," I told Miyako as we regrouped. "Everyone worked together perfectly."

She smiled, though her eyes remained alert, scanning the forest for potential threats. "We've been practising while you were off playing hermit in your cave. This group has serious potential."

"I've noticed," I agreed, watching as Hitomi and Nana expertly set up a perimeter alarm system using thin tripwires and small bells. "When did Hitomi learn to do that?"

"Nana taught her," Miyako explained. "We've been skill-sharing every evening. It's amazing what you can learn when you combine different job classes."

A twinge of regret hit me—while I'd been focused on building and maintaining the sanctuary, I'd missed these moments of community learning and growth. Before I could dwell on it, Miyako nudged my shoulder.

"You should show us some of your Transform applications," she suggested. "We could use more tactical options."

I spent the next hour demonstrating various uses of my ability—creating instant defensive walls, reshaping terrain to funnel enemies into choke points, even forming simple traps that could be deployed quickly during combat. The group watched attentively, occasionally suggesting refinements or combinations with their own abilities.

"This is gold," Hitomi said enthusiastically after I showed how to create concealed observation posts in treetops. "With my Scout abilities and your Transform, we could set up the perfect reconnaissance network."

"And I could enhance those positions with my illusions," Airi added. "Make them completely invisible to anything without True Sight."

By mid-morning, we'd secured the entire southern perimeter of our territory and were preparing to move east. The group had settled into an efficient routine—scout, assess, engage, secure, repeat. Each encounter seemed to flow more smoothly than the last, with fewer injuries and quicker resolution.

During a brief water break, I found myself standing with the Kimochi sisters as the others discussed strategies for the eastern sector.

"You've both become incredible healers," I observed, genuinely impressed.

Miyuki smiled, looking more relaxed than I'd seen her since our arrival. "It feels natural, somehow. Like the skills were always there, just waiting to be awakened."

"Mochi's especially gifted," she added, glancing at her sister with obvious pride. "Her Chirurgeon abilities can identify specific injuries before they're even visible."

Mochi ducked her head slightly at the praise. "Miyuki's the impressive one. Her Mnemonic abilities don't just heal physical wounds—they can ease mental trauma too."

The casual mention of trauma briefly darkened the mood. I knew they were referring to their own experiences, the ones that had driven them away from me years ago. But here, in this strange world, they seemed to be finding ways to process and even heal from those wounds.

"I'm just glad you're both here," I said simply. "Having you on the team makes everyone safer."

They exchanged one of their silent glances—the kind that had always made me feel excluded before. But this time, Mochi reached out and briefly squeezed my hand.

"We're glad to be here too," she said softly. "With you."

Before I could respond, Miyako called for everyone's attention, and the moment passed. But something had shifted, something important. I carried that feeling with me as we continued our expedition eastward.

The eastern forest presented new challenges—denser undergrowth, rockier terrain, and a greater variety of creatures. Hitomi took point, her Scout abilities allowing her to detect potential threats before we encountered them.

"Movement ahead," she whispered, raising a hand to halt our progress. "Larger entities than the goblins. Eight... no, ten of them. They move differently—more coordinated."

"Wearolves?" Miyako suggested, already preparing her defensive spells.

Hitomi nodded. "Likely. They're in a hunting formation, moving this way."

"Perfect opportunity for an ambush," Nana whispered, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. "They think they're the predators."

Miyako quickly organised our positions, with me creating elevated platforms and defensive barriers using Transform. Within minutes, we had established a perfect ambush zone—the path ahead narrowed by fallen trees I'd repositioned, elevated positions for our ranged attackers, and concealed pits to disrupt the wearolves' charge.

When the creatures appeared—massive wolf-like beasts with distinctly bear-like features—they walked directly into our trap. The battle was brief but intense, with our coordinated attacks overwhelming the pack before they could effectively respond.

[GROUP ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: Tactical Superiority – Successfully execute a coordinated ambush]
[XP BONUS APPLIED: All participants receive 30% additional experience]

[JOB LEVEL UP: Samurai → Level 15]
Enhanced Stats: +75% to all sword attacks; +55% movement speed during combat
New Ability Unlocked: VOID STRIKE - Channel spiritual energy into a single strike that ignores 50% of enemy defences and leaves a residual energy field reducing their movement speed by 30% for 10 seconds
Passive Improvement: Critical hit chance increased by 15% against opponents with higher level than you

The level notification was satisfying, but what surprised me was the cascade that followed:

[JOB LEVEL UP: Lone Wolf → Level 15]
Enhanced Stats: +110% to all stats when operating alone; Now gain +5% to all stats when in a party (previously -1% penalty)
New Ability Unlocked: LAST STAND - When you are the only member of your party still conscious, gain 200% to all stats for 30 seconds
Passive Improvement: Can now detect hostile intent within 30 metres when alone

"From penalty to bonus in a party?" I whispered, genuinely surprised. "Maybe the Lone Wolf is learning to run with the pack after all."

[JOB LEVEL UP: Accoucheur → Level 15]
Enhanced Stats: +175% reputation gain with families; Supernatural sense for pregnancy and related complications within 120 metres
Ability Improvement: LIFE'S FIRST BREATH can now cure any affliction in any person under 18 years of age, not just infants and children
New Passive: NURTURING PRESENCE - Children and pregnant women within 15 metres of you gain accelerated healing and 20% resistance to harmful effects

I shook my head in bemusement. The Accoucheur abilities were actually becoming impressive, though I couldn't imagine a scenario where detecting pregnancies would help in our current combat situation. Then again, in a world with demon lords and magical creatures, who knew what strange situations awaited us?

"Well done!" Miyako called as the last wearolf fell. "That's exactly the kind of coordination we need."

Around noon, Emi's message arrived via a small bird that Asuka had apparently befriended. The creature landed on her shoulder, chirping what sounded like instructions.

"Lunch is ready," Asuka announced. "Emi says the non-combat group should eat first since they're at the sanctuary, and I told her we should return by 12:30."

Miyako nodded. "Perfect timing. We've nearly completed the eastern sector anyway."

As we began the trek back to our sanctuary, I found myself reflecting on the morning's activities. Not only had our group become incredibly effective in combat, but the social dynamics had shifted in fascinating ways. The barriers between different social cliques from school had begun to dissolve, replaced by partnerships based on complementary abilities and shared experiences.

Most noticeable was the change in the Kimochi sisters. They moved through the group with growing confidence, no longer flinching when male classmates were mentioned, no longer keeping physically distant from me. Something was healing in them, slowly but surely.

Miyako dropped back to walk beside me; her expression thoughtful. "They're different with you now," she observed quietly, following my gaze to the sisters who were walking ahead of us, deep in conversation with Hitomi.

"Yeah," I agreed. "It's... nice. Feels like getting old friends back."

She studied my face for a moment. "Just friends?"

The question carried weight, implications I wasn't sure how to address. Last night had changed things between Miyako and me, creating a connection that felt significant. But my bond with the Kimochi sisters was equally complex, carrying years of history and recent intimacy.

"It's complicated," I admitted finally.

To my surprise, she simply nodded. "I figured. We should probably talk about that... all of us. But not right now."

She quickened her pace to catch up with the others, leaving me momentarily stunned by her maturity. The Miyako I'd known in school would have demanded immediate clarification, perhaps even created a dramatic scene. This Miyako—the leader, the strategist—approached even personal matters with thoughtful consideration.

As our sanctuary came into view, I felt a strange sense of pride wash over me. Not just in the physical space I'd created with Transform, but in the community that was forming within its walls. Twenty-three people from different social groups, with different abilities and personalities, coming together to create something that worked.

"Who would have thought," I murmured to myself as we approached the entrance, "that getting forcibly transported to another dimension would be the thing that finally taught Class 1-A how to function like actual adults?"

The universe's sense of humour might be twisted, but occasionally, its punchlines landed pretty well. And as I watched my classmates move with newfound confidence—the girls still several levels higher than me despite my rapid advancement today—I realised that figuring out these complex relationships might actually be more challenging than facing the monsters of Voluptaria. Somehow, I suspected the combat would end up being the easier part of our adventure.
