Chapter 200 - The Splintered Teams and The Goddess Mask
The avalanche of earth and rock had been far more powerful than anyone had anticipated. It was a brutal, overwhelming force that had slammed into them with the power of a tsunami, burying them in a tidal wave of dust and stone. Had it not been for their superhuman bodies, which were resilient to a degree, the sheer pressure would have been enough to crush them all.
As it was, the impact had scattered them over hundreds of meters like a literal flood, each team member just like a drifting stone in a new, chaotic landscape of rubble and torn earth.
The first to emerge from the living tomb were Kazue, Katya, and alter Kazue.... The feeling of being buried alive was a nightmare, a crushing weight of earth and rock that threatened to pull them under completely. But the blonde girl was the first to burst from the ground with a powerful, desperate surge of raw strength.
She clawed her way out of the suffocating earth as she ripped through the soil with her bare hands. Once on the surface, she wasted no time, even with her clothes now covered in dirt, immediately going to the spot where she could feel Kazue struggling under the rubble. With a grunt of effort, she dug with a furious, primal energy, finally reaching Kazue's arm and, with a powerful pull, freeing her from the ground.
"Oh my God, thank you!"
Kazue gasped, her body covered in a thick layer of dust.
"I thought I was going to be stuck there forever."
Katya simply stared at her, her expression unreadable behind the white mask. She then turned her head to look at alter Kazue, who, after being covered in dirt, had a rather annoyed expression on her face as she simply emerged from the ground on her own, brushing the dust from her clothes with a calm, almost detached expression.
"What in the hell happened?"
Alter Kazue asked, her voice dry and serious. She looked at the two of them, and then at the massive, chaotic landscape of destruction that surrounded them, just to realize they were alone. She cursed under her breath.
"We have to get back to the others, now."
Before she could say another word, however, a high-pitched shriek, so loud and piercing that it made both Kazue and alter Kazue wince and cover their ears, echoed through the air. They looked up, their faces pale, and saw with horror that flying close to them, almost as large as a lion, was a Superior Void Dracling. The creature was similar to the one they had fought the day before—a tall, humanoid being with obsidian skin, glowing red veins, and a draconian head. But this one was far more muscular, with a build like a professional bodybuilder, and its eyes, which were filled with a primal, savage hunger, were fixed directly on them.
Alter Kazue cursed one last time before shouting.
"Get ready!"
A few hundred meters away, the second group emerged from the chaos. Li, alter Li, Teo, and Emir were in better condition than the first group, having been buried in a smaller portion of the landslide.
The one who had the most trouble getting out was Emir, who, despite his enhanced strength, was still a child. Li, seeing this, immediately went to his side and, with a powerful pull, freed him from the earth. He did so with a frown on his face, but it was clear that he had done it without a second thought.
Teo, who had been watching the whole time, let out a dry, sarcastic laugh.
"What a mess."
He said, dusting the dirt from his expensive clothes.
"I didn't see a single thing. One moment we were outside, the next, we were buried alive."
They were far away from the others and stood in a destroyed landscape of rubble and rock. The air was filled with the guttural roars of dragons, and the ground was still shaking with the sheer force of their siege.
A guttural shriek, far more piercing and savage than the others, tore through the sky, and they all looked up. A Superior Void Dracling was flying directly towards them, his body a blur of black and red, his claws extended and his eyes filled with a primal, savage hunger. This one was far taller than the previous one they had faced, and his claws were much more pronounced, looking like a series of razor-sharp daggers.
Teo, however, simply smiled, a maniacal, almost euphoric grin that contorted his face into a mask of pure malice.
"Well, well, well…"
He said, his voice a low, confident whisper.
"It seems this thing has chosen the worst possible enemy and in the worst possible time."
He then proceeded to summon his two holy revolvers, which appeared in his hands with a faint, white glow. At the same time, both Li and alter Li, who were standing behind him, summoned their spellbooks, which began to glow with a bright, foreboding light.
"Especially when I now have not one, but two supports with me!"
Teo screamed, his laughter echoing through the air. Emir, on the other hand, was terrified, his body trembling a bit, clearly out of place in such a group.
The third group, Chloe, the Empress, Samantha, and Charles, had a much harder time getting out of the rubble. The landslide had buried them deep, and they all struggled to free themselves. The only one who managed to get out with relative ease was Charles, who, with his dry and serious demeanor, helped them out one by one.
"That was unpleasant… What the hell just happened?"
Chloe said, brushing the dirt from her pink hair.
"Definitely not… But we must move, now."
Charles said, his voice flat.
"He's right. The dragons know we're here. We have to get out of… Oh come on! This was my favorite apron, and where the hell is my hat?!"
Samantha said, her voice filled with a rare panic.
"Sam, please, focus, we need to reunite with the rest before…"
But before he could finish, a deep, guttural roar, so loud that it made their bodies tremble, cut him off.

A massive Superior Void Dracling, one that was so fat that its small wings looked comically out of place on its body, was flying towards them. But it was flying with a speed that belied its size, and the sheer pressure that it was exerting on the air was enough to make it clear that it was a being of immense power. The creature was laughing, its deep, guttural chuckles echoing through the air as it landed before them.
Samantha let out a small shriek of terror.
"We are not ready to fight a monster like that!"
She screamed. Charles, who had been staring at the creature with a calm, almost detached expression, simply unsheathed his sword.
"Well… We have no choice."
He said, his voice flat. He looked at the Empress, who was frantically shaking Chloe by the collar of her shirt.
"Give me my powers back, now!"
The Empress screamed, her eyes filled with rage and desperation.
"I will not perish again in a place like this! Where is the boy!?"
Chloe screamed back, her voice choked with dizziness.
"I don't know where he is!"
The last group, formed by Gregor and Nikolai, had a much stranger luck. The solder, with his superhuman strength, had managed to hold on during the avalanche, and by sheer chance, the first thing he had grabbed was Nikolai. So, both of them had ended up almost in the same place they had started, near the entrance of the refuge.
Nikolai, who was covered in dirt and dust, let out a shaky breath.
"Thank you."
He said, his voice trembling.
"Don't mention it. What the hell was that?"
Gregor said, his voice gruff but not unkind.
"I don't know…"
Nikolai said, his eyes wide with fear.
"But it's clear that the ground, for at least a kilometer or more, has been completely destroyed. There's no trace of the others."
However, he was interrupted by a multitude of roars. This time, there was no Superior Dracling there, but a sea of Darkness Draclings. They were a thousand-strong army of dragons that were as big as cars, their black bodies covered in spikes, and all of them were capable of human speech. Their eyes, filled with a savage ferocity, were all fixed on the two of them.
"Look!"
One of them said, with a low, raspy voice.
"A couple of human toys have escaped the refuge! They will be excellent entertainment before we open the mountain!"
"There aren't enough for all of us."
Another one said, its voice filled with a child-like glee.
"Let's make it a game! First come, first served!"
Nikolai's body was trembling with fear, but Gregor simply clenched his fists.
"It seems we have no choice; we'll have to fight a horde on our own."
He said, his voice filled with a grim determination. It was hardly his first time fighting an enemy army at such a disadvantage.
"But what about the others?"
Nikolai asked, his voice shaking.
"They'll be fine."
Gregor said.
"Don't you have faith in your comrades?"
Nikolai stared at him for a moment before he slapped his face.
"You're right."
He said, a determined look on his face. He then took a couple of steps forward, ready to fight alongside his unusual partner.
Meanwhile, Kazue, alter Kazue, and Katya's battle had already begun. Katya and alter Kazue were a blur of motion, moving at speeds that defied the human eye.
The blonde, with her living scythe, tore through the air, her goddess mask making her overflow with a raw, dark, cursed energy. Alter Kazue, on the other hand, who had activated her Personal Skill [Queen of the Elements], had adopted properties similar to light, and her body was a radiant torrent. She had even created temporary clones made of light that were attacking with her, using swords of pure light. But the Dracling was faster, a monstrous specter that moved with a bored, arrogant grace. He blocked every one of their attacks with his claws, his movements so effortless that it was clear he was not fighting back... He was simply toying with them, a sadistic predator playing with its prey.
Neither of them knew it, but the Superior Draclings they were facing were the personal toys of the 'Second Son: Dravhark', and as such, they had adopted part of his personality, including his sadism for toying with his prey before delivering the killing blow.
On the other hand, Kazue was watching from the ground, her face filled with frustration. She couldn't help them; her few skills would do nothing to the Dracling, and she would only get in the way of her two teammates if she used something like her [Storm Titan Howl]. She was useless... Why couldn't she use her Personal Skill at will like alter Kazue? She remembered the description of her skill; it said that it could only be activated when the user "surpasses their limits", but that was a very vague explanation, and she had no idea what it meant.
She tried to concentrate, but it was impossible in the middle of a chaotic battle.
Finally, Kazue snapped; she couldn't stand to sit and do nothing. She had to do something. She then proceeded to use her skill [High Plasma Manipulation] and what she had learned from the [Great Encyclopedia of Elemental Mastery] to create a lance made of pure plasma that she held in her hands.
However, it was not a perfect weapon. Kazue, in her eagerness to learn, had completely skipped the explanations of levels 1 and 2 of her [School of the Five Levels] skill and had gone directly to level 3, which was to create weapons from elements. So, while she had managed to create one, it was not as perfect as it could have been, but it was all she had.
In a moment, the Dracling spun its claws so fast that it sent Katya flying to the ground with a powerful push. He then proceeded to destroy all of alter Kazue's clones before he gave her a powerful blow to the chest that sent her flying to the ground as well, her body filled with a deep, painful wound. Seeing this, Kazue saw her chance. She threw her plasma lance with all her might, shooting it towards the Dracling and hitting it directly in the chest.
The monster's body tensed for a moment, but that was all. It had not even felt a thing.
The Dracling's eyes, filled with a newfound spark, were now fixed on Kazue, who stared at the monster with a look of pure horror. He had identified her as the weakest link, the one who was the easiest to kill, so he let out a deep, guttural laugh and shot toward her.
Not that far from there, Katya, who was slowly getting up from the ground, felt a massive wave of dizziness and nausea wash over her. The feeling of ecstasy and freshness that she had felt since the day before while wearing the mask was gone, replaced by a feeling of pure, unadulterated pain. She felt horrible, but when she looked up and saw what was happening, her heart sank… She saw the Dracling attacking Kazue, toying with her while she tried to evade, giving her cuts all over her body but never killing her.
Katya tried to get up to go and help her, but the dizziness was too much. She felt a disgusting feeling in her head, she wanted to vomit, but she couldn't even open her mouth. It was as if her lips had vanished, as if the mask she was wearing was her new face.
But she couldn't let that stop her. She had to protect Kazue... Her Kazue... Her Kazue and nobody else's… As that thought began to fill her head, she started to get up.
Kazue was scrambling for her life with a multitude of cuts on her body, though none of them mortal or too deep, stinging her skin with every desperate movement. She tried to counterattack, but nothing worked; the Dracling simply laughed, its guttural chuckles echoing in her ears as it toyed with her, until finally, she tripped and fell.
She hit the ground hard, her head spinning, and the monster was upon her in a moment, its massive claw raised high, ready to deliver the killing blow. Kazue, in a final act of desperation, simply closed her eyes and covered her head with her arms, trying to summon her gauntlets even though she knew it would be futile... But the blow never came.
The Dracling let out a confused grunt, and a moment later, a sharp, searing pain shot up its arm. It looked down and saw that its entire claw was gone, ripped clean from its forearm. It looked to its side and saw Katya, who was now standing up, her body hunched over, holding the claw in her mouth… Or whatever was that, it seemed like the mask itself had cracked on the lower half, creating a fanged and inhuman mouth. The Dracling stood in place with a deep, unsettling confusion on its face, until the blonde girl spat out the claw with a violent, disgusted snarl and screamed.
"Hands off my Kazue!"
The sound of her voice was not her own; it was a raw, guttural, and inhuman roar that shook the very ground.
