Chapter 149 - Holy Empire (3)

Chapter 149
Holy Empire (3)

Saint and Pope.

Beneath them are the Archbishops.

Each Archbishop has a territory they are assigned with.

Five Archbishops operating in the Five Kingdoms, excluding the Holy Empire, and Two Archbishops active in the Neutral Zone.

Thus, there are a total of seven archbishops in the Holy Empire.

-There is a traitor among the Archbishops.

Manuel had even discovered that there was a traitor among the archbishops. He flipped to the front of the journal, and found the following.

-The only people who know the location of a candidate for sainthood are the Archbishops and the Paladins who will escort the candidate.

.

.

.

-I got information about an Archbishop who has been in contact with the Demonic Church.

.

.

.

-The man who came to kill me had a Holy Enhancement Magic that only the Archbishops can use.

Redin flipped to the back of the journal again, and there was more information about the Archbishops.

From their name to their age, from the date they joined the Church to what they’ve been up to, to recent events.

There was also a list of Manuel’s thoughts, along with his suspicions.

He read them all carefully, mentally cataloging the information, then returned the journal to its secret compartment.

Clearing the room, he made his way outside.

“Hmmm….”

Manuel’s secret journal didn’t say anything about the results of his investigation of the Archbishops.

Considering the last date written in it was a week ago, he was likely conducting an investigation somewhere.

“It would be best to talk to him in person, but…….”

If Manuel was determined and in hiding, finding him was going to be a challenge. It was virtually an impossible task to find Manuel if he was serious about staying hidden.

Still.

He could probably find him if he set his mind to it and spent a week tracking him down, but it would be a waste of his time.

The Archbishops are all gathered in the Holy Empire for the Saints Ordination Ceremony.

After the ceremony ends, the archbishops will return to their original regions. If he were to start with Manuel and then investigate the archbishops again, he would have to travel quite a distance.

In the interim, there’s no telling what the Demon Church has planned.

“There’s no better time than now.”

The Archbishops are all gathered in one place.

If he used his Copy ability to check their status windows, he could easily identify the traitor.

Manuel could meet with him afterward.

In his head, he ran through the information about the archbishops and made a plan. Which archbishop to investigate first.

“Okay.”

The first target was decided.

Archbishop Beordo.

The Archbishop operating in the Kingdom of Resha, home of the mages, was a man of great knowledge, but also a man of many questions.

According to Manuel’s secret journal.

Magic and Divine Power.

Two distinct powers.

It says that he was secretly working to distinguish their similarities and differences, and to merge them together.

In a world believed to be made by the Goddess, there were no opposites like science and religion. Magic and Divine Power were both given by the Goddess.

However, there was a note left behind suspecting Archbishop Beordo due to the use of Demonic Energy in the research process.

“It would be great to have some of the useful magical tools used in the Kingdom of Resha here.”

“Wouldn’t there be enlightenment only if there’s suffering?”

“It is indeed, Difficult, ”

He glanced at the man with the full head of gray hair who was walking away from the conversation.

A visage weathered with age.

A pair of glasses perched on his face.

Wearing the white cassock worn by priests with a badge signifying him as an Archbishop. At his waist was a red sash.

His face was unmistakable.

“Archbishop Beordo….”

Observing his movements, he slowly followed him, keeping a good distance.

Every now and then, people who recognized the archbishop greeted him, and he smiled and shook hands with them.

“Archbishop, my child wants to become a priest, may I have a small blessing from you?”

“Of course.”

The child was led out by his parents.

Beordo stooped low and placed his hands on the child’s head, reciting a prayer.

The sacred light emanating from his hands flowed into the child’s body. The sanctity felt just by being near was overwhelming.

“You want to be a priest?”

“Yes! I want to be a priest and make many people happy.”

“Happiness… hoohoo. That’s a nice sentiment. Grow up healthy and I’ll see you next time.”

“Yes!”

Hearing the child’s energetic reply, the Archbishop rose from his position. Redin realized that now was the perfect time, so he walked a little faster.

Seeing that he was blessing the child, several people came forward to also receive a blessing.

“Archbishop…… I’ve always wanted to meet you.”

“Really? Hahaha.”

Archbishop Beordo spoke briefly with those who approached and offered a short prayer of blessing.

One, then two.

The line dwindled, and his turn came. Redin quietly clasped his hands together, bowed low, and the archbishop raised his hands above his head.

A warm touch imbued with Divine Power.

*Ooooh!*

Divine power surged through him, and Archbishop Beordo’s status window appeared in front of his eyes.

[Beordo]

Strength: C

Agility: C

Stamina: B

Divine Power: S

Luck: A

Talent: B

-Possessed Skills: Radiant Touch (A), Holy Empire Swordsmanship (B), Preach (A), Empathy (A), Graceful Mind (A), Heart for God (S)…..

A quick check of his skill set.

The man shouldn’t have any connections with the Demon Church.

His usage of Demonic Energy was purely for the sake of research.

There was no indication of any other intention.

If he was involved with the Demon Church, there would be one particular ugly skill for that.

“You seem to have a lot of worries and concerns on your face, don’t you?”

“Yes.”

“I’d like to hear more about it right now, but unfortunately, I don’t have the time. If worries continue to pile up, they can become a burden on the heart, so please come visit me some other time.”

“Thank you.”

The priests around him shooed the crowd out of the area.

“I apologize, sir. The Archbishop has another appointment, so that’s it for now.”

As if they had gotten the news, the Paladins came and cleared a path, and the priests and archbishop walked away.

As he watched them go, he crossed out one Archbishop’s name from his list.

There were only 6 Archbishops left.

He figured he could get to at least one more before the day was over. Ducking into a nearby alley, Redin switched to another face.

Moving on to where his next target was.

Over the course of two days, He confirmed 4 Archbishops.

Making sure to check the most improbable ones.

As expected, the four archbishops were clean beyond any suspicion.

Now it came down to the remaining three.

The one Manuel had marked with an asterisk.

The Archbishop of the Kingdom of Carvin.

Moreno.

And the two archbishops from Neutral Zone.

Madison and Dyke.

The two most likely candidates to be Traitors.

Archbishop Moreno, who is in charge of the Calvin Kingdom branch, was originally a Paladin and fought on the front lines against the Demon Church before becoming an Archbishop.

A former Battle Paladin.

He was one of the most likely suspects, as he was the most familiar with the Demon Church.

As for Madison and Dyke, they were in charge of a neutral territory, so it was likely that they had contact with the Demon Church.

“Cough…….”

Now, there are only three suspects remaining.

Investigating the remaining three wasn’t easy. With only two days left until the inauguration ceremony.

From now on, the archbishops will go to a special place in the church and will not come out until after the ordination ceremony.

He had to infiltrate the Church.

Redin wandered around the Holy Empire to find out how the process works.

“I heard that the one who receives God’s grace during the final grand ceremony after passing the tests prepared by the archbishops becomes the Saint.”

” Are there any cases where a person is not favored at the final ceremony?”

“No. They all became Saints.”

“……”

“It looks like the ceremony starts today.”

He thanked the man for his kindness and made his way to where the Church of the Holy Empire was located.

A temple made of white marble.

Beginning at the fountain in front of the entrance, he slowly looked around to get a grasp of the temple’s layout.

The only way in from the outside was through the main entrance.

“After the final service tonight, there will be no services for the next five days.”

With those words from the receptionist, he took a seat by the fountain and waited for the evening to come.

Many people had gathered for the final service, and he squeezed through the gap and entered the Temple.

Halfway through, Redin used [Ghost Walk] and made himself invisible with Dragon Magic.

He also activated an artifact he had prepared to avoid being detected by other magical devices or detectors powered by Divine Power.

Becoming completely invisible.

The artifact could only hold for a limited amount of time, so he had to move swiftly.

A place to hide and operate.

A place where the Archbishops might be.

He needed to figure out these two places while the artifact was still in effect.

“The service will begin now.”

Leaving behind the resounding sacred voice, he walked deeper into the Temple.

Another two days went by.

After checking with Archbishop Moreno, who is in charge of the Carvin Kingdom Branch, he was unable to find any links to the Demon Church.

That would leave the Archbishops of the Neutral Zones.

Their examination was held on the third and fourth days, making it impossible to make contact with them as they have not left the examination chamber.

At the end of the 3rd Test tonight, Madison will emerge from the Examination Chamber, allowing him to check their status window.

“Huu…”

Settling down in the storage room deep within the temple, he grabbed the rations he carried in his subspace pouch.

Taking a piece of jerky into his mouth, he chewed and waited for night to descend.

While waiting, he took stock of his current powers and thought about the second half of Harungel’s middle phase.

*Diing!*

*Diing!*

*Diing!*

The bell rang, signaling it was 6:00 p.m.

Soon, the third test would begin.

Although it was difficult to find out about the tests, he confirmed that four out of the seven candidate Saints had been eliminated.

A test that only three candidates would take.

Standing up, he grabbed a priest’s robe he’d gotten from the Temple, donned it and headed out of the room with a white hood covering his head.

Every time an examination was held, there was a group of priests praying near the examination room.

He joined them, silently praying and waiting for the exam to end.

One hour.

Two hours.

Three hours.

.

.

.

After eight hours, it was finally dawn, and the tests came to an end. The door opened, and the exhausted candidate Saints emerged.

Some priests helped the candidates to their feet, followed by the examiner, Archbishop Madison, who looked worn out.

“I’d like to take a moment to rest alone.”

Seeing that Madison was walking alone, he broke away from the group and used invisibility magic.

A room dedicated to the Archbishops within the Temple.

He quickly followed Madison inside as he entered his own room.

He watched as Archbishop Madison sat on his bed, eyes closed in silence, as he prayed quietly to himself.

It would be unwise to make any attempt to approach him now.

Calmly, he waited for the man to fall asleep.

After about 30 minutes, Madison went into the bathroom, washed up, and came out. I observed him lying down on the bed with his eyes closed.

He waited for time to pass yet again, and when Madison’s breathing evened out.

He slowly walked over and stood by the Archbishop’s side.

Reaching out lightly, Redin used the Copy skill on the Archbishop.
