Chapter 392: The Empty Chair
The Empty Chair
The thick timber groaned under the pressure, hinges screeching as the door cracked open. A sliver of golden lamplight spilled out into the hall beyond. Then, with a final push, the heavy door swung wide.
"—How dare you enter without permission?!"
The voice lashed through the chamber, sharp as steel drawn across stone. It carried authority, irritation, and the kind of discipline drilled into a soldier's bones.
Leon's steps ceased. His golden eyes snapped to the noise, a flicker of surprise crossing his features—but it disappeared immediately, replaced by a soft smile pulling at his lips.
"Well…" he said under his breath. "…let's have a look at who howls so loudly."
He took a step forward. His boots clinked on the stone floor as he stepped over the threshold.
The space within broadened before him. A large, circular table took up center stage, its surface smothered in maps, parchment, quills scattered about, and half-consumed candles that hovered the air with wisps of wax and smoke. Chairs had been set about it, most occupied. One remained vacant—at the top.
The soft amber of magical lamps lit the room, the light of which was reflected in the polished steel armor and the keen eyes of the men seated. The air was charged with tension, the weight of leadership and planning out long nights bearing down upon it.
All eyes looked to Leon the instant he entered.
The man who had yelled stopped in mid-breath. His mouth dropped wide open as his eyes broadened. His rigid posture faltered, and he stood up slowly from his chair, as if incredulity compelled him to rise.
He was someone Leon knew the moment he saw him. Long black hair bound up in warrior style. Dark sharp eyes that had always been sternly disciplined. His armor was blackened steel, polished but ridged with scars from years of fighting. His jaw was square, his face tense with that soldier's hardness which seldom let softness penetrate.
Captain Black.
Leon's smile grew wider. He moved forward in slow, golden-eyed grace. "Well. It's been some time, hasn't it?"
Silence fell on the room like a storm. The other officers one by one pushed back from their chairs. Their mouths opened wide, their eyes staring in shock as if they saw a ghost.
"My Lord." one breathed.
Another voice followed, shaking but loud. "Lord Leon—!
The ripple became a wave. Men and women around the table leapt to their feet, clanking armor as they stood together.
"It is you…"
"Our Lord has come back…"
"Stronger… brighter than ever before…"
Their words blended, growing louder with wonder, with worship, with something close to desperation. Some of them stooped low, hands clasped against their chests. The air filled with piety, the room charged with belief revived.
Captain Black's somber expression cracked. His jaw tightened, and his eyes relaxed for the first time in years. Slower, stiffly, he bowed his head. "Forgive me, my Lord. I didn't know… I believed—"
Leon lifted a hand softly, chopping through the tension. "It's okay. You never meant to displease me. You were just defending what you were meant to defend. I trust you."
Those words weighed heavily, but with solace.
Captain Black drew in air, his rigid shoulders at last relaxing. His tone fell into something softer, nearly worshipful. "Thank you, my Lord."
Across the table, a younger man emerged. He was lean of build but his eyes had keen slyness. His uniform was simple but accented with marks of authority. His brown hair was neatly brushed back, though there escaped tendrils from sleepless nights.
"Captain Johnny reporting, my Lord." He clapped a fist over his chest, bowing low. "Your return… it's an honor."
Another man came after him. A middle-aged man, tall and broad-shouldered, with a scar across his cheek that cut through years of hard living. His eyes, though, burned with loyalty.
"Advisor Ronan, at your service, my Lord," he replied, his voice firm although his throat constricted with emotion. "I can hardly believe my eyes… but here you are. And we are with you."
Leon's eyes passed over the room. He focused on one at a time, and his smile relaxed.
You've borne the burden in my place. I can see it in your faces. You've kept this camp intact, defended these people. For that—I'm proud."
His words hit home. Some soldiers' throats constricted, their eyes shining. They'd fought, bled, and survived on uncountable nights of doubt. And now, the man they'd pledged their lives to was back again, offering them the uncomplicated gift of acknowledgment.
Captain Black moved forward once more. He swept his arm towards the head of the table—the vacant chair. "My Lord, your seat is ever prepared. Sit. Where you should be."
Leon's golden eyes traveled to the chair. He hadn't seen it earlier—the way it rested just a little apart, covered in a plain black cloth, as if kept in deferential silence all these years.
Warmth stirred in his chest. Pride, yes. But also something deeper. The kind of loyalty that could not be forced, only earned.
He chuckled softly under his breath, shaking his head. "You've all outdone yourselves."
Then, with unhurried steps, he walked toward the empty chair. Every gaze followed him, every breath in the room caught in their throats.
Leon arrived at the head of the table, placed a hand for an instant against the back of the chair, and then settled into it. The wood groaned softly beneath him, but it seemed like the closing of a promise.
As he sat, the whole room breathed out. Shoulders straightened, eyes glowed brighter. The world, unruly as it was, suddenly felt more solid—because their Lord sat at the table again.
Leon sat back a little, golden eyes scanning them all, and a slow smile curled his lips.
"Really," he said carelessly, voice holding with effortless power.
