Chapter 34: Chapter 16 Sword Bureau
"You arrived so quickly."
Ji Xinghuo looked up at the sky; he had just sounded the alarm less than a minute ago.
The figure was descending at an extremely fast speed. From over six hundred meters in the air, the Sky Fighter approached the ground within five to six seconds, like a meteor.
Ji Xinghuo felt a strong downdraft, along with a mountainous pressure!
Just as the figure was about to hit the ground, it decelerated suddenly, swiftly transitioning from heavy to light, and gently landed on the ground like a falling leaf.
The newcomer maintained a few meters' distance from Ji Xinghuo, with a very robust build and a height just over one meter eighty, wrapped in a layer of dazzling golden energy. Behind his head were four concentric circles of light, their arrangement sparkling brilliantly, as if he wore a suit of armor forged from gold.
He assessed the scene and then took a couple of looks at Ji Xinghuo.
"Did you call in the alert?"
The golden light around the man retracted instantly, revealing his true face.
He appeared quite young, probably only a few years older than Ji Xinghuo, wearing a closely fitted casual-style training outfit. His relatively ordinary features were marked by an air of valor, and he wore a single-lens eyeglass on the left side of his face. The transparent square lens, fixed before his left eye, combined communication, internet access, and scanning functions.
However, the most eye-catching feature was his head—shiny and bright, without a single hair!
"It was me."
Ji Xinghuo nodded, opening his arms to show that he was no threat.
But his eyes involuntarily scanned the man's bald head, the halo, battle armor, empty hands, baldness... Each feature distinctly revealed the man's professional template—a Halo Fighter!
This professional template was extremely unique.
It was powerful in combat, versatile in abilities, and had limitless potential. With just three or four Abilities, the template could be formed, without shortcomings in strength, defense, speed, or recovery. Its explosive power was even described as terrifying, making it one of the most coveted professions.
Of course, Halo Fighters had some flaws.
Like baldness!
The core Ability of a Halo Fighter was "Light Energy," a Transcendent Ability that transformed all Star Power into a unique form of energy—Light Energy.
Light Energy was incredibly powerful and limitless in force, but it had a negative side effect.
It caused a Halo Fighter's pores to close up, forming a closed-off circulatory system within the body. Not just the hair on their heads, but all hair on their bodies would fall off.
This was the case for both men and women.
This characteristic was one of the best ways to identify a Halo Fighter, hence the nickname "Baldy"—though most Halo Fighters detested this moniker.
Baldness was their eternal pain, gradually becoming taboo.
At this moment, Ji Xinghuo noticed that not only was the other man hairless, but even the two eyebrows on his face were drawn on... He nearly couldn't hold back a chuckle.
Halo Fighters were powerful, and this one was a Super Mutant, but the situation appeared rather dire.
Was this the price of becoming stronger?
Ji Xinghuo quickly shifted his gaze away. Luckily, the other man hadn't caught his subtle expression, as he was inspecting the corpse on the ground. Then he turned his attention back to Ji Xinghuo, pausing at the Composite Bow in his hands, a look of shock flashing through his eyes.
"You killed him?" the Halo Fighter asked.
"Yes."
Ji Xinghuo replied truthfully.
Having killed a suspected Class A fugitive in self-defense was both legal and legitimate; there was nothing to hide nor could it be hidden.
Cameras were everywhere on the street, already having recorded the event.
Even more, over ten thousand satellites constantly monitored Chang'an from various orbital heights. Unless the act occurred indoors or underground, nighttime did not preclude the capture of imagery.
"How is that possible!"
The Halo Fighter took another look at Ji Xinghuo, with a face full of disbelief, "You're just a Primary Level Mutant, and you haven't been one for long, right?"
Ji Xinghuo didn't bother explaining further. A review of the surveillance footage would make everything clear.
Five more people descended from the Sky Fighter.
They were three men and two women, aged between twenty-five and fifty, all wearing black Combat Light Armor. A symbol adorned each of their shoulders: four differently colored swords—gray, white, red, and gold—tips pointed upwards in a fanlike arrangement, quite conspicuous.
Upon seeing this emblem, Ji Xinghuo was taken aback.
"Sword Bureau!"
These individuals were not from the Security Department's Special Guard Team but were Swordsmen from the Sword Bureau.
The so-called Sword Bureau, officially known as the National Security Intelligence Bureau, was responsible for counter-espionage, intelligence investigations, and other national security matters. Its director reported directly to the leader of the Asia-Pacific Community, with a rank equal to the Security Department but far more renowned and powerful, recognized globally as an influential organization.
A fugitive would attract the attention of the Sword Bureau?
Ji Xinghuo looked at the five Swordsmen, realizing that each of them was a powerful Advanced Mutant with diverse yet complementary Professional Templates, encircling him and the corpse.
"Captain."
One of the Swordsmen called out.
The Halo Fighter was about to speak when a dozen or so maglev police cars roared in; a flood of Mutants in Combat Police Uniforms jumped out, wielding various weapons and shields, rapidly cordoning off the scene and half the street.
These were the real Special Guard Team.
Leading them was a woman, standing over one meter ninety, with shoulder-length hair and a brisk martial bearing. Her skin shimmered with a subtle silver-gray luster, and the insignia on her epaulet was that of an iron shield. As she walked forward, she seemed like a weighty statue drawing near.
Iron Guard!
Ji Xinghuo thought to himself, noting she was a rare female Iron Guard.
"Min Chongwu, what's the situation now?" The female Iron Guard obviously knew the Halo Fighter, calling him by name right away.
"Song Fei," Min Chongwu shook his head, "We're all too late."
He gestured towards the corpse on the ground.
"Dead?"
Song Fei glanced at the body and then quickly noticed Ji Xinghuo. She guessed what had happened, but like Min Chongwu, her reaction was the same. Her eyes widened as she spoke sternly, "You killed Ji Zongbang? You must be joking!"
Ji Xinghuo spread his hands, knowing that anything he said in this situation would not be believed.
"What is your name?" Song Fei asked.
"Ji Xinghuo."
As Song Fei questioned him, she gestured for an officer to pull up Ji Xinghuo's identity and background. Hearing Ji Xinghuo's name, she paused in her movements.
Not just her, everyone present underwent a subtle change of expression.
"The 'Ji' as in 'seasons'?" Song Fei's demeanor became much more restrained, even somewhat cautious.
Ji Xinghuo nodded.
He knew why others reacted this way; it was a common occurrence in his life.
Because of his surname "Ji."
It was not a common surname, but it was deeply ingrained in the minds of all the people on Earth. At the mention of this surname, everyone would think of one person.
The founder of the Asia-Pacific Community, the leader, the spiritual guide of billions from the Asia-Pacific and around the globe, the most powerful Mind Hacker in history, one of the greatest humans of this era, "Leader" Ji Daosheng!
Even merely sharing the same surname as the leader, without any substantial connection, was enough to make one feel honored.
This showed just how high the leader's prestige was in people's hearts!
"I was assigned this surname at random."
Ji Xinghuo took the initiative to explain, a line he had spoken no less than a hundred times since his childhood.
Public children had a naming system; it would randomly generate several names, from which the foster parents in the infant stage would choose the one with the best meaning.
The others immediately understood.
"You're really lucky," Min Chongwu muttered enviously. He was also a public child and had not been assigned such a name.
He saw that Song Fei wanted to approach the body and quickly positioned himself in front of her, "Song Fei, the Ji Zongbang case has been taken over by the Sword Bureau."
Song Fei's face fell, "It was my team that first received the tip and uncovered him after initiating the investigation, costing the lives of three people."
"So what?" Min Chongwu stood his ground, "Ji Zongbang was a foreign spy, a matter of national security, beyond the jurisdiction of the Security Department." His tone softened, "Your fallen subordinates will naturally receive the due compensation and commendation."
Song Fei stared at Min Chongwu, speechless, and the atmosphere became instantly tense.
From the conversation between the two, Ji Xinghuo picked up on key information and was overwhelmed with joy.
"This fugitive turned out to be a spy!"
If it were merely a fugitive he had killed, even in self-defense, there might still be trouble, such as unresolved cases or being the key witness in a bigger case associated with the fugitive.
But killing a spy would bring no issues.
And there would even be extra benefits!
A foreign spy constituted a significant achievement; no wonder these two parties were contending.
Ji Xinghuo watched the drama unfold from the sidelines.
The duties of the Security Department's Special Guard Team were wide-ranging, a specially established armed force responsible for citizen safety, counter-terrorism, capturing criminal Mutants, and other tasks beyond ordinary police capability.
Because the symbol of the Special Guard Team was a steel shield, they were colloquially known as "Shield Guards."
One was a Swordsman, the other a Shield Guard.
From their titles alone, one could perceive the conflict between the two.
Although one focused outward and the other inward, there was still some overlap in their jurisdictions. Sometimes they were comrades fighting side by side, and other times they were rivals locked in competition.
"The background of Ji Zongbang is extensive, too much for the Security Department to handle," Min Chongwu whispered, "Even if you confiscate the body, witness, and physical evidence now, it will still have to be handed over to the Sword Bureau. Your branch may even face sanction for this."
Song Fei's expression shifted but she remained reluctant.
"Consider this a favor I owe you," Min Chongwu suddenly conceded, "for the sake of our years of friendship."
Song Fei watched him for a few seconds before finally stepping back.
"Withdraw."
With a wave, she led the majority of the Special Guards to leave by car, leaving only a few to keep watch and continue securing the site.
Min Chongwu relaxed, commanding, "Collect the physical evidence and data from the scene, leave a record, take the body away."
Several Swordsmen swiftly got to work.
Min Chongwu turned his bald head towards Ji Xinghuo and suddenly said, "Mr. Ji, I know you picked up something. Hand it over."
He reached out his hand.
Ji Xinghuo hesitated momentarily but ultimately passed the Alien Species over to the other man.
In fact, ever since he realized that the Alien Species was a "Rotating Magnetic Field," Ji Xinghuo had been contemplating how to keep it for himself.
Under normal circumstances, this would be virtually impossible, as the scene would doubtlessly have been recorded, and the moment he picked up the Alien Species couldn't have been missed.
The Alien Species, coming from the corpse of the fugitive, was one of the pieces of evidence; how could he justify keeping it for himself?
However, it was different with spies!
"A Rotating Magnetic Field!"
Min Chongwu, after observing the Alien Species for a few seconds, finally recognized it. His eyes bulged, and he subconsciously scratched his head, only to feel his smooth scalp.
The other Swordsmen nearby, hearing his words, had their gaze drawn to the Alien Species.
Each person looking at the Alien Species Crystal had a sparkle in their eye, the Transcendent Ability "Rotating Magnetic Field," possibly one of the strongest, rarest, and most valuable there was!
Just then, Ji Xinghuo solemnly asked, "Chief, killing a foreign spy still falls under the 'Spoils of War Principle,' right?"
The Swordsmen around all showed a sudden change of expression.
Min Chongwu, too, was taken aback but ultimately nodded, "Of course it applies."
He understood what Ji Xinghuo meant, and a schadenfreude smile spread across his face. He spoke, "You've struck it rich this time, but others are at a loss. Mr. Ji, you will follow me back to the bureau. Be careful with what you say and do from here on out; that's all I'll say."
